Book Description
According to its proponents, the `new economy' is associated with sustainable growth, increased demand for labor and zero inflation. On the micro-level, this bright avenue into the future is propelled by knowledge capital, flexibility and new ways of organizing production, such as clusters and networks. Progress in information technology, together with massive deregulation on the national and the international levels, have been credited with setting this development into motion. The concept of the `new economy' has been rapidly embraced by politicians, as it seems to offer a way out of the traditional trade-off between unemployment and wage inflation. However, empirical evidence regarding the microeconomic mechanisms of the `new economy' is scarce. Knowledge Capital and the `New Economy': Firm Size, Performance and Network Production intends to narrow this gap by empirically analyzing the composition of knowledge capital and how knowledge capital is distributed across firms of different size. Moreover, the impact of knowledge capital on firms' profitability and international competitiveness is also examined. Finally, we compare cluster dynamics and the institutional set-up in Europe and the U.S., with the purpose of identifying regulations that seem to hinder a conducive environment for expanding and dynamic European clusters. The results of this study emphasize the role of knowledge capital and flexibility. Thus, irrespective of how sustainable the `new economy' turns out to be, the policy implications in terms of providing institutions that facilitate knowledge-enhancing economic activities, flexible markets and transparent incentive structures are undeniable. Countries that fail in this respect may find themselves trailing in the international growth and welfare rankings.

Book Description
Personal, poetic, and anchored by research, Faith, Madness, and Spontaneous Human Combustion is a provocative look at the startling ways in which modern science shapes our identities. At the heart of modern medical science lies the soul of self-perception. In this book, scientist and poet Gerald Callahan reveals what science has uncovered, sometimes unwittingly, about us-where we begin, how we grow, why we die, and what comes afterward. An immunologist, Callahan dissects the immune system to reveal its most intimate underpinnings-the selves hidden inside our thymuses, the pieces of others lodged in our lymph nodes, the gift of human death, and the fires that burn inside our bodies. From the seemingly sterile voice of science come the words that define each of us. We are singular men and women only because we have immune systems. When immune systems fail, people disappear, and in their places arise communities of living things. Buried inside our genes and our lymphocytes science has found faith and love, madness, and the fierceness of human beings. In Faith, Madness, and Spontaneous Human Combustion, Callahan uses research and personal anecdotes to examine these complex issues, proving ultimately that rigorous scientific facts can be intensely intimate.
Customer Reviews:
Poetry, immunology, and faith.......2006-07-14
This book, written in a beautiful, almost poetic prose, is engrossing, informative, and covered commonalities of the immune system, human behavior, genetics, family relations, faith, reason and science. I particularly liked the parallels between paranoia and immune system. In paranoia, the mind views almost everything as a threat, and may even inflict damage on innocent parties. In the latter the body attacks itself and other non-threats, causing injury to itself. Also, the details on how the immune system "remembers" and how the various organs police the system was fascinating. Not all of the personal family story snippets tied strongly to the central theme, but all were excellent writing and emotionally powerful. Anyone wanting to expand their horizons and view the world from a unique viewpoint could do well to read Callahan's fine book.
Who would've thought?.......2006-07-09
I didn't know a darn thing about the immune system, and it wasn't high on my list of must-research material, but this book is the best one I've read this year. What an amazing book! Absolutely fascinating -- and not just for science minded folks.
Stimulating, educational & almost mystical, EXCELLENT.......2006-03-19
Callahan is that genre of author I like to describe as "scientifically based mystic." Scientist in that, true to his craft, he primarily uses the scientific method to probe the answers to life in the biological sense. Mystic in that he recognizes that science can provide many wonderful answers and statistics, but seldom the "meta" answers man has yearned for since we can remember.
"Who am I?" and "What is my place in the universe?" are questions seldom answered satisfactorily by science, and more comfortably by religion. Using his considerable experience and knowledge in the science of immunology, Callahan tackles these questions in a much different way then most scientists would, yet without an appeal to religiosity. Always with a healthy respect for the unknown, unseen and unknowable, Callahan deftly explores the hidden relationships between ourselvs, our parents and every other living thing comprising life.
He'll make you think in ways you possibly haven't thought before, and even tug at your heartstrings while recounting intensly personal stories experienced by us all. Highly recommended.
Creepy, I skipped the morose stuff........2005-10-25
This book oddly jumped between an interesting view of the human body and, in particular, the immune system, to creepy and morbid personal memories of the author. Ick.
Somebody finally found a balance.......2005-02-27
I call "Faith, Madness..." scientific poetry. It is a work of humanity, written in earnest, baring its flaws and uncertainty to reveal a possible truth about WHY and maybe more importantly HOW we are what we are. Callahan weaves snippets of insightful, passionate prose with personal ancedote to illustrate his theory that our immune systems help to define our individuality. I have been touched by this book. Not only does it speak to my thirst for scientific understanding but it lightly stroked my sense of spirituality. Science books like this don't come around very often.

Book Description
A complete guide to Arizona's trout waters, revised and updated.
In Arizona, you'll find a variety of rivers and streams, from bottom-release tailwater fisheries to fertile high-desert creeks, from the Colorado River to the Valley of the Sun. In no other place in North America can you see Trico hatches in November and again in February and March!
In this revised, updated, and expanded edition, authors Meck and Rohmer examine the state's trout waters impacted in recent years by floods, drought, and forest fires, such as Canyon and Cibecue creeks, the lower portion of the Salt River, and the Colorado and Upper Verde rivers. Coverage of many of the lakes has also been revised, and several lakes in central and southern Arizona have been added to round out this comprehensive, detailed guide. 50 black & white photos, 20 maps, resources, index.
Customer Reviews:
This is a must-read book for all Arizona fly anglers........1999-02-19
These two authors have taken much of the guess-work out of fly fishing new trout waters in Arizona. Their combined experience and knowledge have been put together to aid both beginner and experienced fly fishermen. Virtually every productive trout water in the state is covered, along with tips, techniques, directions, and tackle needed to be productive. The book is both fun and easy to read, plus extremely educational for the fly angler seeking to fish Arizona's trout waters. This is the much needed book that every fly fisherman/woman in Arizona has been waiting for. If you are even thinking about fishing in this state, read this book!
This has opened to my eyes to what I have in my own backyard.......1998-12-28
I would like to commend the authors for a great job on a book that has given the Arizona resident like myself a new outlook on fly-fishing. I am excited about using the plethera of information that I have, and cannot wait until I can put this information to work on my next outing. Thank you Charlie and John for a job well-done!!
I am a Arizona born Fly Angler who endorses this book........1998-12-13
Reading Arizona Trout Streams, I thought my spots were being exposed. But as I got into the feel of the writers tone, I felt as if I were reading something written by a friend who was sharing his secrets. The book is punctuated by Arizona Fly Anglers names, friends of the authors who wrote the book. A nice touch. Certainly most people like to see their name in print, especially a book on our subject. Organized by geographics, the pages move from one stream to another in good form. Not all streams are listed, just the ones that are well known, and a few that aren't. One of my favorite streams is listed. The author gives it a poor rating, and for this I am happy. It seems that his idea of a small stream rating and mine do not closely match. That is ok by me, life is not black and white. There are some streams that I haven't even heard of. I know the area where they drain, but I haven't heard of them through my information channels or in my wanderings. I have a log, even one a little more in depth than I show you online. I check the insect hatches in my notes, and the hatches listed in Arizona Trout Streams is dead on. My knowledge of entomology is limited, but what I do know, I can say that it certainly matches the book. That my friends is a great feeling because I feel so lost when it comes to the Latin part of flye angling. I would have paid more for color pictures, but the black and white photographs are excellent. The pictures in the book look like ones that we have all taken. For instance, the Haigler Creek photograph is what I am talking about. A good look at what the stream really is. There is a section on Lee's Ferry that has been fully researched. The history of Trout strains at this tailwater are discussed along with flys and techniques used. I am impressed that I could have learned so much from a paperback book written on my subject. (my ego, has been deflated! just kidding.) Again, what a great book. Arizona Trout Streams is a must own for every Arizona Fly Angler and anyone who wants to know more about our Trout Streams. If you are thinking about coming to Arizona, go and purchase this book. It will make your knowledge of our streams match even some of us who have fished here our whole lives. Thank you Charles Meck and John Rohmer for making such a great book. I have been sweating it for a long time, and now I know that I am indeed learning many things, along with some new streams.

Customer Reviews:
Yes, Virginia, there are trout in AZ, even in July.......2004-12-07
Most people in AZ live in Phoenix, many are from somewhere else, and most haven't found out about the trout streams in the White Mountains. Rex Johnson has, and his book is an invitation to come see for yourself, that you can catch real wild trout in this hottest and most arid of states, even if you live in Phoenix and come from the midwest. You just have to be open to new things. Get it?
It works!.......2004-10-27
The first thing I did after reading this book was simple: I picked two or three of Rex Johnson's favorite streams, none of which I'd ever before read of or heard about, and I tried them myself. Results? Excellent! One stream (to remain anonymous) was about the best experience in trout-fishing I've ever had. Now I've adopted it as my own "secret" stream. I only wish Arizona Trout book were longer, and with better maps.
Nice travel book.......2003-09-26
Book has some info, but not much in the way of specifics. A general travel book, not really a fishing book. Very disappointed.
An OUTSTANDING resource for the exploration of Arizona Trout.......1999-07-11
Here is the best tip that I can give anyone for fly fishing Arizona, ready? Buy it! Try buying it right here you won't find it in the shops yet. Get your credit card out, and type me a message right now telling me "thank you" so you don't have to hold yourself up e-mailing adam while you are getting ready to explore all the wonderful opportunities that are exposed in this book. I am absolutely impressed! In 1999, no less than three books on Arizona Fly Fishing have been released for the public. This book is a MUST HAVE for any fly fisher in the state of Arizona. If you have to buy one book, this is it. It is my favorite, did I say that? For those of you visiting the state, this resource is definitely one that puts you in touch with more information than most of the locals. Mr Johnson is obviously a very keen Arizona explorer with a fly rod. In a nutshell, you will not find any careless meanderings, no miss marked maps, just a Christopher Columbus of fly fishing here in our state. Gee's this guy has been around. The answers are there for questions that are very close to my heart. I will not go into detail about this book other than I TOLD YOU SO! Do you want Arizona Trout???

EXCELLENT PRODUCT.......2007-07-15
I originally bought this product for my sister in-law, she's a huge quilter. Once I received it, I couldn't send it to her. It has great binding, and enough space for legibly reading addresses. Most used letters have their own divider, which makes it perfect for common last names. The pictures of the quilts on the dividers are bright which makes this product as good as my Smithsonian agenda. Love it!
Great Features.......2007-07-10
I gave this gift to a friend who does quilts and she loved it. It's got lots of room for eneries including email address. It is sturdy and will for sure last a long time. It's large enough to not get lost easily and to write in without having to make your letter tiny. But not small enough to carry with you, unless you like to tote bulkier things and don't care. I think the images are unusual, all of more modern quilts and wouldn't be as suitable for the more traditional art lover or quilt maker.
I love this book!.......2007-01-10
I love the fact that this has individual tabs for the majority of the alphabet - I think there are two that share. I also love the design - simple, yet artistic.
Very pleased and highly recommended.......2006-12-27
You never know what you are you going to get when you order off the internet, but this was a very pleasant surprise. It is well worth the price and the picture doesn't do it justice. All the descriptions are very accurate. I couldn't have asked for a better address book. I choose this book bc of the high reviews, and I am glad I did.
great address book!.......2006-08-04
I recently purchased this address books in hopes of being more organized. This book is well organized, with plenty of space under each letter for several entries. Having a large family, as I do, makes this a great feature of the book. I also appreciate the sturdy construction and classy look of this book. I am very pleased and highly recommend this product!

Plenty of content.......2007-04-24
This is much better book than the second In Style book. There are detailed tips on how to look for the best fit and what shapes flatter which body style. I was hoping to see more pictures of actual clothes so that's the reason for four stars.
In Style;Secrets of Style; The Complete Guide to Dressing Your Best Every Day.......2007-04-02
I THOUGHT THE BOOK IS EXECELLENT AND IT IS WORTH THE PRICE.
Great Reference Book! .......2007-03-21
I have purchased other style books in the past, but this is one of the most useful because it breaks down body types and what looks best. My goal was the dress sexier and more feminine and this books has taught me what types of tops and bottoms to achieve that look. Now that I stick to the rules of thumb they provided, I am more comfortable with wearing whatever I pull out of my closet because I know it will fit great and be stylish.
Great book, everybody needs.......2007-01-12
This is the best book on clothing and style I've ever read. It's a must have! This book will save money for anyone following the advise given.
Not really a "style" book.......2006-09-30
This book is good for explaining which shapes of clothes look good on which figures, how clothes should fit, and how to tie a scarf. While that is helpful, I was expecting to learn some "secrets of style" as the title claims. Some tips on finding a style that corresponds with your personality or lifestyle, how to make it your own, shop for it, and keep it updated...that's what I thought I was buying. Too bad.
