Book Description
Whilst there are many books on knowledge management there are few aimed directly at HR practitioners and the critical role that they can play in building a knowledge-centric culture.
This practical book draws on the author's own experience, as well as that of leading-edge Human Resource and Knowledge Management practitioners (including Linda Holbeche, Elizabeth Lank, and David Snowden), each of whom recognise that building a knowledge-centric culture cannot be achieved through technology alone.
It covers areas such as:
* Defining the key ingredients of a knowledge-centric culture
* The changing structures, roles and responsibilities needed to create a knowledge-centric culture
* HR's unique contribution to building a knowledge-centric culture, together with practical steps for getting started on the KM journey and for keeping the momentum going
* Tools and techniques for: opening up a dialogue about why knowledge management is crucial for business and personal success; knowledge mapping; encouraging and facilitating knowledge sharing, as well as ways of identifying key knowledge players
* How to help your organisation reframe its assumptions about learning in the knowledge economy
* How to ensure that your HR practices are knowledge aligned
*Outline the strategic and practical elements of HR's involvement in knowledge management
*Features contributions from Dave Snowden and Elizabeth Lank
*Practical case studies to help create an organizational culture that knows how to mobilize and leverage its knowledge

Book Description
This book presents an introduction to the methodology of structural equation modeling, illustrates its use, and goes on to argue that it has revolutionary implications for the study of natural systems. A major theme of this book is that we have, up to this point, attempted to study systems primarily using methods (such as the univariate model) that were designed only for considering individual processes. Understanding systems requires the capacity to examine simultaneous influences and responses. Structural equation modeling (SEM) has such capabilities. It also possesses many other traits that add strength to its utility as a means of making scientific progress. In light of the capabilities of SEM, it can be argued that much of ecological theory is currently locked in an immature state that impairs its relevance. It is further argued that the principles of SEM are capable of leading to the development and evaluation of multivariate theories of the sort vitally needed for the conservation of natural systems. Supplementary information can be found at the authors website,http://www.jamesbgrace.com/. Details why multivariate analyses should be used to study ecological systems Exposes unappreciated weakness in many current popular analyses Emphasises the future methodological developments needed to advance our understanding of ecological systems

Book Description
Know Your Boat is here to rescue the millions of boaters who have always been afraid to peer into their boat’s innards for fear of what they’ll find. Here at last is the humorous, user-friendly guide that will give a timid skipper the courage to grab a wrench and tame the savage beast in the bilge (or at least make its acquaintance). Assuming no mechanical aptitude, David Kroenke provides readers with an easy-to-read introduction to the use and maintenance of the many systems found on today’s typical power or sail boat, including: engine, electricity, electronics, plumbing, refrigeration, windlasses, pumps, and steering system.
Customer Reviews:
Maybe it's good for cruising sailboat owners..........2005-03-06
As a new owner of a 25 foot powerboat, I was eager to delve into this book and learn about the systems on my boat. The description here led me to believe that this book would be pertinent.
I did not find it helpful. The author excludes outboard motors from discussion. Six of the ten chapters don't pertain at all to boats like mine: Engine Basics (because outboards are excluded), Freshwater Plumbing, Marine Toilets, Stoves, Sinks, and Refrigeration, Sailboat Rigging, and Getting Ready for the Big Trip.
Relatively few new boat owners begin with a boat of a size that typically includes such features. If the description had more accurately described what one would find inside, I would have saved my money.
A Must Have Book for Every Boat Owner.......2004-05-11
Mr. Sollers covers the systems that make a boat work with a considerable amount of humor. For example, he calls boat owning a disease, an addiction. He says there should be organizations to help. I've gotten a lot of laughs out of this volume, some darned good advice too. It's a must have book, especially for someone who is new to boats and has never had a wrench in his hand.
Very important for first time boat owners.......2002-06-09
Very clear with plenty of easy to follow drawings and schematics, this book sheds light on very confusing aspects of boat ownership, chartering, surveying or just 'using'. Now, when I lift a floorboard or the engine room I know what every piece is and is supposed to do. David cruised extensively and he gives us the benefit of all his mistakes. I strongly suggest buying this book and keepint it on board.

Customer Reviews:
Good especially for Modern dates & TV stars, etc........2004-05-10
I bought this book this past January and have been reading it daily. I find it makes a good companion to Cyril Leslie Beecham's book "The Dictionary of Dates" which lists more ancient dates. Instead, "On This Date", lists many more "modern" dates, such as those we are more familiar with, like the TV Premier of "ER", or the TV premier of "All in the Family", etc. Unlike some of the other date books, this one lists many more tv stars and movie stars than others, however, if you are looking to see when the Battle of Britain was, you probably won't find it in this book. It also didn't have Isak Dinesen's birthday (4/17/1885) although it did list VE Day.
Overall, this book is sort of a Hit-or-Miss book. For the Really Big dates that are things EVERYONE has heard of, you're sure to find it in here. But for the more obscure people or dates, you may want to check out another date book.

NBC News Presents: Diana Revealed, The Princess No One Knew
ASIN: 0847821374
Release Date: 1998-08-15 |
Book Description
With the exclusive support of many who knew and loved Diana, Princess of Wales, this book celebrates and examines the way she presented herself to the world-in her look, her smile, her choice of dress, even her hairstyle.
From the moment the innocent young nanny stepped into the very public role of Princess, her innermost thoughts and emotions had to remain concealed. Yet her sense of herself was inexorably conveyed through her manner of dress and her public demeanor as she passed through the many phases of her public life.
Through her insight as an insider and internationally admired fashion editor, Georgina Howell tells of the fairy-tale transformation of Diana. Photo- reportage and lavish official portraits by royal photographer Anwar Hussein and the world's greatest fashion photographers explore every carefully planned public face and mood of the Princess-ingenue, bride, madonna, supermodel, nemesis, icon.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful close-ups of Christie's auction dresses.......2006-06-25
My favorite thing about this book is the many close-ups of the materials in many of the dreeses that the Princess Diana wore. Seeing the intricate bead work onont the pink Cahterine Walker dress that she wore on the Indian tour in 1992, gave me such an added appreciation to the beauty of that dress. There is another really nice close up of the beautiful lilac Lot 52. There are many other close-ups of many of her gowns, too many to mention. This book is on my "must have" list.
Not much new.......2002-02-12
This book didn't add much. Most of the information and pictures have been seen elsewhere.
A Little Too Fawning, but the Catalog is Great.......1999-08-27
Georgina Howell clearly takes the Andrew Morton (read Diana) point of view on the Princess's persecution by the palace and casts her as a kind of saint in a fashion-conscious hagiography. The text was a little too hyperbolic in deifying Diana, yet perhaps that is appropriate, as few have done so much for fashion in our century.
But this book has redeeming qualities that make it worth the time. First, it does cite instances of Diana's fashion faux pas that are gossipy and interesting, for example her dressing-gown dress by David Sassoon and her slip-style dress by John Galiano for Dior. It is also quite meticulous about citing designers and recounting their memories of dressing Di. This humanizes a commercial name and gives the reader a sense of what her patronage meant to these fashion houses.
The best aspects of the book are the appendices listing the auction catalog by piece and the designer listing with short biographies. This is a wealth of specific information that couture-ophiles will love.
THE FIRST COFFEE TABLE BOOK I'VE READ COVER TO COVER..........1999-06-19
Georgina Howell has provided the world with a unique perspective on how Princess Diana revealed her inner thoughts and feelings through her outward style and clothing. This book is especially meaningful to me because it was a gift from my sister Darla who joined me at the Christies Auction in 1997 and travelled with me to Althorp last summer. She wrote a small poem on the gift card and ended by saying "We sat with celebrities of glamour amid, waiting for Christies to open the bid. We bid and we raised until bowing to fate, but our memories are captured on Page 208." And sure enough, there we are: my sister, myself and Bid Paddle #212.
A BIOGRAPHY AND CHRISTIE'S AUCTION CATALOG IN ONE.......1999-04-30
A very interesting study in how a person's clothing reflects what is going on in that person's life! The back has short bios of the fashion designers of Diana's clothing/shoes/hats, and a listing of the dresses sold at the auction. For those of us who don't own a copy of the auction catalog, this is almost as good as having one. HOWEVER, the critic before me is right: too many typos for the money!

Book Description
"The United States, Canada, and Mexico need to modernize our relationship if we want the 21St Century to improve on the past. The three countries of North America already have a larger market than the European Union, but we have not begun to explore our potential as a diverse community. Robert Pastor's book offers a wealth of new ideas and proposals for constructing a North American Community and lifting all of the people of the entire continent"
--Vicente Fox, President of Mexico.
The Mexican peso crisis struck in late December 1994, coinciding with a new Mexican administration and the end of the first year of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). The crisis poignantly highlighted the success and the inadequacy of the treaty-success in the expansion of trade and capital flows, and inadequacy in institutional capacity. The Canadian, Mexican, and US governments defined the agreement so narrowly that they failed to devise a mechanism that could monitor, anticipate, plan, or even respond to such a serious problem. The new president of Mexico, Vicente Fox Quesada, has boldly proposed transforming the free trade area into a common market like Europe's. This has evoked lukewarm responses from the Bush and Chrétien administrations, which have not yet developed ways to cope with the new problems stemming from accelerated social and economic integration or to take advantage of North America's opportunities.
In this visionary study, Robert A. Pastor seizes Fox's idea and maps out the paths toward making it a reality. He analyzes NAFTA's success and shortcomings, extracts lessons from the European Union's 40 years of reducing disparities between rich and poor countries, and proposes ways that NAFTA can adapt and incorporate those lessons. The centerpiece of the book is a detailed proposal and specific recommendations for new institutions and "North American policies," including plans for infrastructure and transportation, immigration and customs, a unified currency, and projects aimed to lift the poorer regions. The author addresses issues of sovereignty and national interest and concludes with a look ahead toward a Free Trade Area of the Americas.
This book is the first of its kind to propose a detailed approach to a North American Community - different from the European Common Market but drawing lessons from its experience. It will be of considerable interest for policymakers in the region as well as researchers and students of international political economy, world trade, and foreign affairs.
Customer Reviews:
This makes me sick!!!.......2006-07-13
I cannot believe what this guy is proposing!! I am going to pass this around as further ammunition that the federal government is not a government for, of, and by the People. The New American Century has only just begun.
But opposition is mounting. Perhaps the most blistering criticism has come from Lou Dobbs of CNN - a frequent critic of Bush's immigration policies.
"A regional prosperity and security program?" he asked rhetorically in a recent cablecast. "This is absolute ignorance. And the fact that we are -- we reported this, we should point out, when it was signed. But, as we watch this thing progress, these working groups are continuing. They're intensifying. What in the world are these people thinking about? You know, I was asked the other day about whether or not I really thought the American people had the stomach to stand up and stop this nonsense, this direction from a group of elites, an absolute contravention of our law, of our Constitution, every national value. And I hope, I pray that I'm right when I said yes. But this is -- I mean, this is beyond belief."
AMEN.
Recently, the Pittsburgh Tribune Review questioned the unchallenged momentum toward merger.
"Will Americans trade their dead presidents for Ameros?" the newspaper asked in an editorial last month.
The paper chided efforts at replacing the U.S. and Canadian dollars and Mexican peso with "the amero" - a knockoff of the euro - along with the building of "a looming NAFTA-like superstate." Citing the meeting between the three national leaders at Baylor University in Waco, Texas, in March 2005, the editorial warned: "Canadians, Mexicans and Americans who value the sovereignty of their respective countries should be concerned."
The Tribune Review editorial saw synergy between the plans of the national leaders and the ambitious agenda of the Council on Foreign Relations - seen by many as a kind of secretive, shadow government of the elite. The CFR issued a bold report in the spring of 2005, shortly after the joint announcements in Waco by Bush and his counterparts.
"The Council on Foreign Relations published a report in May -- "Building a North American Community" -- calling for, among other things, redefining the borders of the three nations, creating a super-regional governance board and the North American Paramilitary Group to ensure that Congress does not interfere with whatever the trilateral union feels like doing," said the paper. "Must the Bush administration happily sacrifice every shred of American sovereignty for the greater good of the New World Order?"
In fact, the CFR report is a five-year plan for the "establishment by 2010 of a North American economic and security community" with a common "outer security perimeter."
Some see it as the blueprint for merger of the U.S., Canada and Mexico. It calls for "a common economic space ... for all people in the region, a space in which trade, capital and people flow freely."
The CFR's strategy calls specifically for "a more open border for the movement of goods and people." It calls for laying "the groundwork for the freer flow of people within North America." It calls for efforts to "harmonize visa and asylum regulations." It calls for efforts to "harmonize entry screening."
In "Building a North American Community," the report states that Bush, Mexican President Vicente Fox and Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin "committed their governments" to this goal March 23, 2005, at that meeting in Waco, Texas.
Alan Burkhart, who describes himself as a free-lance political writer, cross-country trucker "and proud citizen of one of the reddest of the Red States - Mississippi," is another critic seething over these plans that seem to have a life of their own - with little or no real public debate.
"As time passes, American corporations will find it unnecessary to move their facilities out of the country," writes Burkhart. "Our already stagnant wages will be just as low as those of Mexico. The cultures of three great nations will be diluted. Our currency will be replaced with the 'Amero.' And, we'll be one giant step closer to the U.N.'s perverse dream of a one-world government."
Pastor also was vice chairman of the May 2005 Council on Foreign Relations task force entitled "Building a North American Community" that presents itself as a blueprint for using bureaucratic action within the executive branches of Mexico, the U.S. and Canada to transform the current trilateral Security and Prosperity Partnership of North America into a North American union regional government.
THATS RIGHT PEOPLE.. THE GOVERNMENT IS PLANNING THIS AND ISN'T EVEN TELLING US ABOUT IT. APPARENTLY WE ARE NOT WORTH NOTIFYING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Traitor to US Sovereignty, Constitution, Supreme Court.......2006-07-13
It may be the biggest story of the 21st century, but few press outlets are telling it. In fact, until very recently, few in the U.S. were aware of the plans and even fewer denouncing what appears to be the implementation of an effort some have characterized as "NAFTA on steroids."
All American people should be very concerned at the prospect of a North American Union - and the end of hope for the free country our Founding Fathers laid before us. We must resist to the bitter end of need be and fight the push bu multinational corporations and elite bankers' push for a new world order combining elements of fascism/corporatism and and end-run around our sovereignty by unsurping the powers of Congress and the American Legal System.
Is President Bush's reluctance to control the border and enforce laws requiring deportation of foreigners who enter the country illegally part of a master plan to all but eliminate borders between the U.S., Canada and Mexico? You bet.
If President Bush's agenda is to establish a new North American union government to supersede the sovereignty of the United States, then the president has an obligation to tell this to the American people directly. The American public has a right to know.
Phyllis Schlafly, the woman best known for nearly single-handedly leading the opposition that killed the Equal Rights Amendment, sees a sinister and sweeping agenda behind the Security and Prosperity Partnership of North America.
"Is the real push behind guest-worker proposals the Bush goal to expand NAFTA into the Security and Prosperity Partnership of North America, which he signed at Waco, Texas, last year and reaffirmed at Cancun, Mexico, this year?" she asks. "Bush is a globalist at heart and wants to carry out his father's oft-repeated ambition of a 'new world order.'"
She accuses the president and others behind the effort of wanting to obliterate U.S. borders in an effort to increase the Mexican population transfer and lower wages for the benefit of U.S. corporate interests.

Book Description
Six years ago, American Lori Berenson was conducting a research project in Peru when the government detained her for high treason. Her inexplicable arrest marked the beginning of an unimaginable nightmare for the Berenson family that continues today.
Declaimed by then President Alberto Fujimori as a threat to national security, Lori was charged as a leader of the Peruvian terrorist group Movimiento Revolucionario Tupac Amaru (MRTA) and tried without due process by hooded military officials. This anonymous tribunal broke four international treaties on legal rights, and even its national constitution, in order to convict Lori-a conviction protested by human rights organizations-and sentence her to life without the possibility of parole. Isolated in a Draconian mountaintop prison with no heat, electricity, or running water and less food than could sustain her, Lori's health swiftly deteriorated.
As told by her mother, this is a journal of Lori's harrowing plight and of Rhoda and Mark Berenson's quest to free their daughter. Both parents gave up promising academic careers to lobby full-time for Lori's release, and Rhoda Berenson vividly records the grueling experiences and emotional roller coaster of their several years struggle. She describes the family's unwavering dedication, the anger, the sadness, and the behind-the-scenes negotiations with politicians. Her gripping account, combined with excerpts from Lori's letters, gives the reader an inside view into a world of sensitive politics, military courts, torture, corrupt prison commandants, terrorist insurgency, and police reprisals.
The dramatic ordeal of this courageous family sheds harsh light on human rights injustices and offers a moving testament to both a family's love and to its strength of spirit and character.
Customer Reviews:
Lori Berenson Saint?.......2005-08-25
Only a mother could love Lori Berenson and Rhoda Berenson Lori's mom, does love Lori. The problem is Lori is in jail for a long long time in Peru because Lori wsa/is a member of a terrorist cell. For this she was justly convicted and sentenced to 20 years in prison. Many hoped she would get the death penalty. In Peru Loris is despised except by her communist fellow travelers.
Mrs Berenson being a good mom will hear none of this. Mom really hates America althoug she won't quite say it. Rhoda is one of those deluded fools who is convinced that the Titanic didn't sink and that Lori never harmed so much as a bug. Alas the governmetn of Peru disagreed. Rhoda had many fooled here in America.. Like congressperson Carolyn Baloney ooops I meant Maloney.
Then 9/11 happened and Lori got lonelier than a match in a snowstorm. Rhoda still loves Lori though (as only a mother could). If you want to read this bizarre saga of a New York genius gone south read the book. If you thought Joe Stalin was a lying thug dont' read the book. Rhoda and Joe both lied for what they believed in. AMEN.

Book Description
Governments today deploy trade sanctions, blockades, and financial restrictions as their political weapons of choice to curb aggression and to enforce international morality. But is economic warfare an effective foreign policy instrument? In this lively and highly informative investigative history, R. Thomas Naylor demonstrates repeatedly that punitive measures almost always fail to achieve their stated goals and often cause unintentional harm, especially to the innocent populations of the embargoed countries. In reality, economic warfare breeds corruption, creates thriving black market economies, criminalizes legitimate businesses, and helps turn limited conflicts into global ones.
Naylor illustrates the futility of forcing political change through economic pressure by describing in intricate detail the poor record of lateral and multilateral sanctions aimed at the former Soviet Union, South Africa, Iran, Iraq, Cuba, Panama, and other "pariah" governments. In virtually every case, he shows how embargoes, trade restrictions, and asset freezes are successfully circumvented through an interdependent sanctions-busting network of shell companies, offshore banks, professional money laundering operations, and "flags of convenience" shipping centers. In meticulously documented stories wrapped in deception and denial, secrecy and subterfuge, Naylor reveals that economic warfare inevitably promotes economic crime or gangster capitalism. As corrupt profiteers who are in league with the political elite of targeted states gain power and influence, they reinforce the regime's commitment to the very policies that led to the imposition of sanctions. And, as in the case of Iraq, where 200,000 children died of a malnutrition-related disease while Saddam Hussein and his ruling class prospered, the human cost invariably falls on the poorest elements of the rogue state's society.
Written with compelling prose and wry wit, Naylor's eye-opening account of the dire consequences of economic warfare takes the reader on a fascinating journey through an underworld of corrupt leaders, privateers, gun-runners, drug traffickers, gangsters, and spies.

Book Description
This book traces the evolution of the large industrial corporation in France, Germany, and the United Kingdom from the 1950s to the 1990s. It combines long-run trends with illustrative case studies of leading companies and their managers to present a rich and complex picture of corporate change. In particular, the authors highlight the paradox of increasingly similar patterns of corporate strategy and structure across advanced industrial nations with continuing marked differences in corporate ownership, control, and managerial elites. Despite strong institutional contrasts between the leading European economies, and regardless of the decline of the American model of management, big business in Europe has continued to follow a strategic and structural model pioneered in the United States during the first half of the twentieth century and encapsulated long ago in Alfred Chandler's (1962) 'Strategy and Structure'. This finding of similar patterns of corporate strategy and structure across Europe challenges recent relativist perspectives on organizations found in postmodern, culturalist, and institutionalist social science. Nevertheless, it does not endorse standard universalist accounts of convergence either. The book distinguishes between Chandlerism, with its original ideology of universalism, and the broader Chandlerian perspective, an enduring but evolving core of good sense about the corporation in certain kinds of advanced economies. Thus the authors show how the surprising success of conglomerate diversification and the increasing adoption of more 'networked' multidivisional structure simply extend the core principles of the Chandlerian perspective. They argue that the extent to which Chandlerian principles have held good across the advanced economies of Western Europe through the whole post-war period makes them a model for the kind of adaptive and bounded social scientific prescription appropriate to a changing and varied world. The book contributes to contemporary academic debates on relativism and universalism by proposing a middle-way based on a boundedly-generalizing social science. For policy-makers, it suggest the possibility of steady economic convergence independent of radical and external pressure and sensitive to other aspects of national social structures. For business decision-makers, it offers a more positive model of diversification, especially conglomerate diversification, as well as a new networked organization appropriate to the demands of today's knowledge economy.
