This book carries you beyond daily headlines and the siren song of the stock of the day. Ms. Yamada seeks to identify the underlying enduring trends, rather than tout a cookbook style prescription to current fads. This is a history lesson, making extensive use of comparisons with prior bull markets. As a result, the reader should expect to be an active participant by reviewing the the detailed charts and data. A page turner it is not. The core thesis and eventual conclusions are well worth the effort. After all it is your money.

Reading this book teaches the reader that demographics play a vital role in this "new" economy. The future is completely predictable if we focus on logic vs emotion. A must reading for all long term investors.

I was turned on to this book by theStreet.com's review which gave it five stars saying "Salomon Smith Barney technical analyst Louise Yamada has written a monumental book, one that all serious and professional investors should read." After a couple of times through Market Magic I couldn't agree more. The first part of the book reads like an analyst's detective story as Yamada exlains how she came to publish her 1994 prediction of 7680 for the Dow even though the average was then stalled at 3600. Yamada then takes on the future and describes the global macrotrends that are already shaping the world economy, and will continue to do so despite interim setbacks. This is not a beach book. It challenges readers to think anew and question outdated concepts. I can't imagine a more rewarding guide to the future.

Louise Yamada is an interesting analyst. Although the book contains a lot of data, the data do not come together to form information or wisdom.

Thankfully, each chapter has a summary. The summaries make me feel like I covered the book and didn't completely waste my money.

People's participation in development has been promoted for over 20 years, yet it is still commonplace for projects to be predesigned, without more than a token consultation with those farmers for whom they are intended. This book describes a project among small-scale farmers in the drought-prone and arid communal lands of Zimbabwe which, within the broad remit of promoting food security, helped the farmers identify their problems and choose their own solutions to them. The aim of the project was participatory technology development: to extend the range of soil-and-water conserving farming techniques available to men and women, and to help them evaluate and disseminate these and their own traditional techniques so as to improve the returns from their land.

Central to the project was the attention paid to strengthening existing institutions--the local farmers' clubs and women's garden groups--to ensure the continuity of activities after the departure of the project. Also of critical importance was the involvement of Agritex, the government agricultural extension service, from the start of the project, which has meant that the process approach that was demonstrated in Chivi District, is now being taught to extension workers and adopted throughout the service.

The book describes the background of farmers in the communal lands of Zimbabwe, and then recounts the process approach which involved needs assessment surveys, institutional surveys, participatory planning, awareness raising training, visits to view new technologies, evaluating and disseminating new and traditional agricultural techniques and local seed varieties. How the project also attempted to strengthen women's position in the local community without confrontation is also described. The project is also being replicated elsewhere in Zimbabwe, adapting the ten-year experience in Chivi.

This project has been unique internationally in it's combination of the participation of local community institutions and the governments' commitment to the reorganization of it's agricultural development services. The range of the successful institutionalization of these methods has lessons about sustainability for us all.

This is an excellent book for all those interested in true quantification of tissue elements. Here, methods are outlined, amply illustrated and put forward in the form of exercises making it a pleasure even for the novice reader to get an understanding of what stereology is and what it is for. Now, the day seems near when researchers report their results on quantitative tissue features based on stereological estimation procedures. Highly recommended for serious morphologists.

I do squirrel rescue/rehab and have read a lot of books; this is one of the best. Mallery gives a lot of information about squirrel lifestyle, history, trivia and ideas for facilitating squirrel/bird yard-sharing, all in a way that will make make you laugh as much as the squirrels do. Loved this book! Laughed out loud at some of the stories. The jokes are amusing and the cartoon of the bazooka squirrel relocator was a hoot. Interspersed among the laughs are well known or little known facts about the various types of squirrels. Quite insightful!.......2004-05-14

"How to Buy Your Perfect Wedding Dress" by Ronald Rothstein, et al, basically deals with the the selection of a wedding dress. The authors went into details of what dresses are suitable for what body types and they touched on factors such as the silhouettes, sleeves or no sleeves, trains, the back, necklines and bodies. They also provided information on accessories such as veils, shoes, lingerie, and gloves which are quite helpful to the bride-to-be. In addition, the authors also gave advice on where to get the wedding dresses, and how to take care and preserve the them.

I think this is a useful book to have for those (including me) who have no idea of how to select the right wedding dress. The authors provided basic to very detailed information that I think would be good to have before actually selecting a dress. At the very least, I learn some useful terminologies that will help me when I actually want to talk to the wedding consultant.

Be aware of what you're buying.......2005-04-16

This appears to be a vanity press publication about the House of Chanel, and not, as I had hoped, a book devoted to Coco Chanel's fashions. Of approximately 160 pages about fashion, only 110 pages concern Coco Chanel's designs.

The good news is that the book contains many photos of Coco Chanel's clothes that I had never seen before (and how gorgeous they look, too, after all these years). The bad news is that the rest of the book is about Karl Lagerfeld, the current head designer for Chanel. Since I dislike Lagerfeld's clothes, this was a disappointment.

Given the high price of this book, be aware of what you're buying.

Not what I expected.......2005-12-22

expected to see an objective look at rude customers, and all I got was a few lectures on how to make a customer feel better. I felt like I was back in retail, listening to my boss tell me how I "could have" made a better experience for an extremely rude, irrational and hostile customer.

Sorry, but there are a few nutjobs out there who would be better off, in my opinion, if they received less coddling from management and instead got a public spanking. Issues regarding rude customers have been better and more objectively dealt with on websites like customerssuck.com. I realize there are bad apples in customer service as well, but these days the majority of abuse seems to be handed out by the customers themselves. If you're a business owner or manager, you'd be better off with the book "Angel Customers and Demon Customers".

Slavery may have been outlawed, but some sociopathic nitwits see an opportunity for abusing those who can't fight back whenever dealing with a service person. Management makes the mistake of sacrificing employee dignity for the supposed financial return gained in making an impossible customer "happy". How much of this abuse results in time lost for sick leave, turnover, etc. is a question rarely asked by management or the idiot CEO's who guide them. Or this book.

Retail is in serious need of reform: retailers should quit being so greedy, start seeing their employees as a valuable resource rather than an expendible asset, get back to payimg salespeople commissions, and start paying a living wage. And while they're at it, they should read "Nickel and Dimed".

This book tends to support the old, tired saw "the customer is always right", even though retail these days is clamping down on customer abuse, particularly with returns. As a former clerk, I just wish they'd clamp down on customers who abuse employees, and quit looking at service workers as some sort of replaceable peasant pawns who don't deserve better wages or treatment. The fact that Walmart and other retailers take out what are called "dead peasant" policies on their employees (collecting about 75K for the company in the event an employee dies) should give an idea about what the retail giants and other service firms really think of their workers. Gee, it's no wonder Walmart hires all those elderly "greeters". They make a small fortune if one of them drops dead!

Lester Thurow has a penetrating mind. His ideas and arguments are intellectually pure and for that reason invaluable. He is a true CKO - Chief Knowledge Officer.

Nothing new here.......2005-10-10

I bought this book recently while in Thailand, hoping that Thurow would offer-up something interesting - more or less along the lines of the early 90s work, such as "Head to Head." Not here. I checked the date and the book was initially published in 2003, which means he probably wrote the mainstay in 2002. To me, if you have never thought about globalization and its implications, then buy it. If you have already, then this is nothing more than a collections of truisms that anybody with any interest in the subject would know already.

How can one be wrong so much and still be called an expert?.......2004-06-08

It is so sad how wrong someone can be proven over and over again and still, he/she is rewarded, called a genius and is allowed to teach our youth. Here is a quote from the author: "Can economic command significantly... accelerate the growth process? The remarkable performance of the Soviet Union suggests that it can... Today the Soviet Union is a country whose economic achievements bear comparison with those of the United States." This was in 1989, just shortly before the Societ Union collapsed. Unfortunately, being this wrong in economics gives one awards and allows you to teach college students while being described a genius. Sad. Mr. Thurow may be a 'genius', but geniuses can be wrong too.

Infrastructure.......2004-05-29

One of the wildest claims in this book has to do with the question of infrastructure. Thurow claims India has better infrastructure than China. But today the chairman of GE, Jeff Immelt, told his audience in India that they would never catch up with China unless they improve their infrastructure. Immelt said India lagged behind China in health and in things like airports and roads. And this, he said, was a major reason why India was a "disappointing" market for GE.

Somebody must be wrong - either the GE chairman or the MIT professor. There are many other errors in this book, not only in facts and statistics, but also in analysis. (Another whopper, of the analysis variety: Thurow says that Confucianism and Communism combined to emphasize education in China, and that this is one reason why China is so highly educated for a developing country. I don't know about Confucianism, but I do know that for years Mao decimated higher education in China, so that at one point college students had the reading ability of a junior high student while junior high students could barely read.)

Logical and important........2004-04-20

A thorough and logical overview of economics and globalization, with predictions as well as prescriptions to manage potential problems. Although the predictions may or may not come true, the book is important because it allows readers the opportunity to understand in a clear, readable and factual manner, the issues we face as a "world economy".

If you want to read only one book which explains globalization, the rationale behind government run fiscal policies, the impact of trade deficits, and changing roles of governments and the world bank, this is a great one.

Comprehensive stories of China, Taiwan and US in early 50's........2004-12-25

I appreciate the author of providing very valuable stories of the Dachen Withdraw and the crisis of Jinmen and Mazu in 1955 and 1958. This part of history is very little known to the people of Taiwan. Should the history textbook of Taiwan include more details of these events?

Chapter 4 "To the Nuclear Brink" in 1954 US considered the ultimate disposition of Taiwan and Penghus unsettled. One of the option Washington had is to place Taiwan under U.N. trusteeship. US considered the offshore islands just off the coast of mainland were legally Chinese territory. I never heard of these concepts until lately. When Chiang Kai-Shek authorized the use of the atomic weapons against his people on the mainland the US National Security Council members were speechless. KMT and CKS demonized CCP when I was in Taiwan. I guess that will make the killing more justly. It is interested to me that these events happened 50 years ago is revived again. I heard China does not want Jinmen and Mazu because they fear that Taiwan will move further away from China. Taiwan has no interest in Jinmen and Mazu either.

On page 149 in 1955 president Eisenhower learned that preference of Taiwanese, in order, is independence, reunion with Japan, joining with Communist China. The mainlander and CKS always consider the Taiwanese are the traitors, because of Taiwanese's affection with Japanese. CKS treated the Chinese in Manchuria as traitors too. When he dispatched the representatives to accept Manchuria from Soviet Union and Japan he did not allow any Manchurian to be the representative. I knew Manchurian were discriminated from the top government positions in Taiwan when CKS was in power.

Good use of Chinese, and Soviet archives..........2000-06-21

This book is an example of how the end of the Cold War has helped American history be less "Americancentric". We think one thing, but along comes Chinese and Soviet sources that help us have a more balanced view of the past. The book traces the relationship between the U.S., U.S.S.R. and China from 1945-1972. It is well researched and well argued and for the most part balanced. I felt there could have been a little clearer discussion of what lead up to the Nixon visit to China in 1972, It still seemed to just happen. A must for those interested in the cold war, China and Soviet communism and the such.

While earlier studies have focused separately on Russian foreign policy, the evolution of the business sector, or the growing crime problem, this book integrates these topics to gain a deeper understanding of how Russia's domestic evolution affects relations with its neighbors. It brings together in an overarching conceptual framework the impact of large corporations such as Gazprom and LUKoil, and small business networks active in the shadow economy of separatist regions in Georgia, the porous Russian-Kazakh border and the Far East. Individual chapters analyze key sectors in the Russian economy, including energy, arms, banking, forestry and drugs. By focusing on Russian business in all its forms, this book provides new insights into larger questions of conflict resolution and the role of the private sector in international and security relations.

Why did the Soviet Union use less force to preserve the Soviet empire from 1989 to 1991 than it had used in distant and impoverished Angola in 1975? This book fills a key gap in international relations theories by examining how actors' preferences and causal conceptions change as they learn from their experiences.

Andrew Bennett draws on interviews and declassified Politburo documents as well as numerous public statements to establish the views of Soviet and Russian officials. He argues that Soviet leaders drew lessons from their apparent successes in Vietnam and elsewhere in the 1970s that made them more interventionist. Then, as casualties in Afghanistan mounted in the 1980s, Soviet leaders learned different lessons that led them to withdraw from regional conflicts and even to abstain from the use of force as the Soviet empire dissolved. The loss of this empire led to exaggerated fears of "domino effects" within Russia and a resurgence of interventionist views, culminating in the Russian invasion of Chechnya in 1994. Throughout this process, Soviet and Russian leaders and policy experts were divided into competing schools of thought as much by the information to which they were exposed as by their apparent material interests. This helps explain how Gorbachev and other new thinkers were able to prevail over the powerful military-party-industrial complex that had dominated Soviet politics since Stalin's time.
