        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Basic Overlook of Neuroscience.......2007-02-24

This book is really good for a general understanding of neuroscience and it has good pictures. This is really a beginning undergraduate level book and can be used as supplemental material for basic concepts when a student is starting to become more advanced, but it does not go into much detail. It is well-written and consequently easy to read. If you're looking for an introduction to neuroscience this is a good book. If you're looking for a reference book for higher level neuroscience this book won't meet standards.

2 out of 5 stars Good for undergraduates.......2006-11-30

You're probably purchasing this book because it's required for your survey course in neuroscience, and that's fine. In fact, it's pretty good for that purpose. But if you want a more rigorous treatment of the subject matter, then this book needs one or several serious supplements.

It's certainly the most "lickable" neuroscience textbook out there, due to its candy-coated drawings.

        Pros:
        -Current information
        -Readability
        -Clinical focus
-Profiling relevant human diseases (however largely non-rigorous)
        -Profiling current scientists
-Presentation of some of the diagrams (colorful, do a fair job at synthesizing information)

It is not so good at:
        -Thoroughness
-More realistic images (stained sections, slice preparations, fMRI images)

The two cons are a deal-breaker for me, however. For instructors I would recommend this book highly at the undergraduate level and only with a caveat to the graduate level.

        5 out of 5 stars Neuroscience Brain.......2006-11-06

It is a very good neurobiology book. All of the concepts are explained very well and in great detail.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Text.......2005-12-14

If you have been dabbling in cognitive psychology and brain science, have found it interesting and are looking for a broad yet in-depth treatment then this book will not dissapoint you. It approaches Neuroscience from every possible angle: you will learn about the anatomy and physiology of the brain and how it produces, controls and mediates the sensory, motor and emotional functions that underlie human experience. The layout of the text is logical, it uses great pedagogical tools, and the writing is concise and informative (if a little dry). Highly recommended as a first textbook for serious study.

4 out of 5 stars A Brief Review of "Neuroscience".......2005-09-05

I just finished using this book for an undergradutate Neurobiology class at Harvard University, and found it to be very informative. It has a number of diagrams and illustrations, and clearly describes various aspects of neuroscience in great detail, but in a comprehensive manor. I recommend it to anyone pursuing a career in neuroscience.

          Book Description

Exploring Brain Functional Anatomy with Positron Tomography Chairman: R. Porter 1991 Positron emission tomography (PET) is an essentially non-invasive technique for measuring localized functional activity in the brain and elsewhere in the body in a quantitative manner with good topographical resolution. PET is an area of burgeoning research activity in which advances in camera design and in data acquisition and analysis have allowed repeated, rapid measurements of cerebral blood flow to be made down to a resolution of 6 mm or better. This symposium is, to our knowledge, the first to be published on the application of PET to the mapping of human cerebral cortical function. It includes chapters on aspects of the technology of PET and on its use clinically and in basic research into brain function. Other chapters describe the use of the technique to study the human somatosensory system and motor system, the human visual system (with the first direct evidence for separate colour and motion centres and pathways in the visual cortex), and higher-order processes such as attention, memory, intention, learning and language in humans. Chapters on the use of PET to study frontal lobe function in relation to psychiatric disease, and brain injury and recovery from it, illustrate the application of this imaging method to the clinical field. The fully edited discussions between neurologists, physiologists, neuroanatomists, psychiatrists, physicists, statisticians and other experts serve to highlight problems in the current protocols and to identify future directions in the exploitation of positron tomography both in basic neuroscience research and in medicine. Book Description

Exploring Brain Functions Models in Neuroscience Edited by T. A. Poggio and D. A. Glaser This volume consists of the background papers and reports of discussion from the Dahlem Workshop. It focuses on the identification of appropriate models for brain functions and ways of evaluating them. A unique combination of key researchers involved in theoretical and experimental neurobiology addressed these issues from the following perspectives:
          • Molecular and biophysical mechanisms of information processing;
          • Forms and mechanisms of learning;
          • Models of visual perception: case studies in brain functions; and
          • Architectures of intelligent systems. This book provides a timely assessment of the state of theories involving the brain and their role in neuroscience today and tomorrow, from the point of view of theoreticians and experimentalists alike.

                        Book Description

A complete species-by-species guide to the ultimate fishing destination.

Top Water is a fishing book as immense in scope as the state it describes. Each of the ten major gamefish species is covered in chapters that give species biology and life history and then provide fishing information such as where to look for that fish, timing, tactics, fly theory, and gear requirements. From steelhead to cohos and sockeyes, from giant kings to feisty pinks, from vibrant rainbows to surprise grayling, char and lake trout, each chapter finishes with a thorough discussion of the species' range in Alaska with highlights on those rivers and drainages that will interest fly fishers.

Alaska is a dream fishing destination for anglers from around the world. Top Water does justice to those fantasies with more than 100 beautiful and informative full-color photographs. You'll see the natural beauty of the venues these fish inhabit as well as the details of what each species looks like, what kind of tackle you'll need, and what flies will be most effective. Full color maps offer quick reference for where to look for each species.

Top Water is more than a coffee table book; it's a comprehensive and definitive reference work; it's an armchair travelogue and a guidebook all in one. This guide to the fabled state of Alaska should be in every angling book outlet and part of every angling collection wherever that may be. Full-color throughout, 15 maps.

this is a great book for anyone wanting to grasp the basics of wine, not knowing where to start! I feel like the author doesn't talk down to readers who might not know alot about wine already. She explains things thoroughly, so you get involved in chapters, but it's not overwhelming, esp. because of the helpful summary of key info at the end of each chapter. The setups for the winetastings were really helpful when I had a winetasting party, everyone could participate, have fun, and learn something.

5 out of 5 stars How did I live without this book?.......2000-06-29

                        This book is for everyone.

If you really don't know anything about cooking OR your kitchen, it explains really basic things, including what staples to buy at the store.

If you already know how to cook -- sort of -- but really eat a steady diet of take-out or cereal & milk, this book gives easy practical things you will actually make.

If you know how to cook and actually do cook, this book is still useful because it's like calling your mom to ask "does corn have to be stored in the fridge?" or "how many days before this chicken goes bad?" or "how do I make homemade lemonade/chicken soup/ hot cocoa?"

An excellent all around reference book.

5 out of 5 stars love this book........1998-12-31

This is a great reference for people who are novices, as well as already good cooks. I use this book religiously. The meals I can create now taste and appear complex, but the way the recipes are laid out, it's really easy. Ronnie Fein makes cooking a simple, tasty delight.

                        2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2007-07-23

I had hoped that this would be an interesting book providing a new perspective on dressing if you have a "Rubenesque" figure, but it was just the same old bull about how you need to wear enormous shapeless clothing to create a "flattering, slim" silhouette. Note to the world: enormous, shapeless clothes do not make you look slim, they make you look enormous and shapeless. In addition, even though this book was published in 1999, all of the suggested outfits look like they're from the 80s. No wonder it's out of print. I am giving the book 2 stars rather than 1, however, because it does have some nice appreciative descriptions of body types that aren't anorexic models. At least it was a cheap book...

5 out of 5 stars A refreshing new look at beauty.......2003-04-17

I really enjoyed this book because it celebrated many different body types, showing how best to enhance each one. It can be frustrating that today there is such a narrow definition of "beauty" and this book goes beyond that.

I also enjoyed the concept of labeling each body type by the artist that celebrated that shape, as opposed to fruit labels, i.e., "pear" or "apple". For instance, the Rubens shape is all-over voluptuous and generous. That doesn't fit today's "ideals" but why shouldn't one be able to look lovely just the same?

I myself felt like I was somewhere in between Modigliani (very slender above the waist and curvy below) and a Renoir (similar shape, but more solid above the waist)...it depends on my weight. In any case, some of the same styles apply to both body shapes.

I can say that following the advice of empire-waist dresses and dresses with bolero jackets for the Modigliani shape has garnered me compliments, both from my husband (a spontaneous, "Wow! That looks really nice on you!") and from others. And that feels great.

3 out of 5 stars Some good advice here.......2003-04-11

The author includes detailed charts and drawings, which are indeed helpful. My problem with the book is the rigid categories for body types. My type is almost a Picasso, but deviates from some of the Picasso's key characteristics -- rendering most of the advice for this type useless. I'm somewhat of a Pop Art, too, and the advice for this type contradicted much of that for the Picasso, so I ended up feeling confused. I suggest checking for this book in your local library to determine if it's a worthwhile purchase for you.

5 out of 5 stars An Elegant Solution.......2002-05-23

Finally a book on fashion that makes sense..Margaux has given me the tools I need to go to the store and shop for me. I went through my closet and took all the styles she recomends for my body type and she is right. I was trying to figure out if it was the lable, price, or store that was causing me problems with fit. I am looking forward to another book by Margaux.

3 out of 5 stars not as good as all that.......2001-06-12

I was actually somewhat disappointed with this book after having read all the rave reviews. My basic disappointment is that my body type apparently doesn't exist. I don't fit clearly into any of the six catagories that the book outlines and so was left trying to guess which things in two categories applied to me.

The book does have a lot of useful drawings that can help choose appropriate clothing but I would much rather have had things organized by groups like tips for full hips or petite women. Having to try to cram myself into a category that I didn't really fit in made it more work than it should have been and left me wondering which tips to mix and match.
