Book Description
Minor Transnationalism moves beyond a binary model of minority cultural formations that often dominates contemporary cultural and postcolonial studies. Where that model presupposes that minorities necessarily and continuously engage with and against majority cultures in a vertical relationship of assimilation and opposition, this volume brings together case studies that reveal a much more varied terrain of minority interactions with both majority cultures and other minorities. The contributors recognize the persistence of colonial power relations and the power of global capital, attend to the inherent complexity of minor expressive cultures, and engage with multiple linguistic formations as they bring postcolonial minor cultural formations across national boundaries into productive comparison.
Based in a broad range of fieldsâincluding literature, history, African studies, Asian American studies, Asian studies, French and francophone studies, and Latin American studiesâthe contributors complicate ideas of minority cultural formations and challenge the notion that transnationalism is necessarily a homogenizing force. They cover topics as diverse as competing versions of Chinese womanhood; American rockabilly music in Japan; the trope of mestizaje in Chicano art and culture; dub poetry radio broadcasts in Jamaica; creole theater in Mauritius; and race relations in Salvador, Brazil. Together, they point toward a new theoretical vocabulary, one capacious enough to capture the almost infinitely complex experiences of minority groups and positions in a transnational world.

I don't doubt even for a moment when Mr.Champy claims that the "X-engineering" revolution will be much bigger than the "reengineering revolution". The technology is ready and almost mature - internet, application servers, XML standards. The business problem is obvious - break down the corporate boundaries to achieve efficiency. Dell is the poster-boy. Current economic climate is creating a momentary damper.
The only gripe I have the book is that it didn't include a chapter on technologies that make X-engineering happen. This probably would have completed the picture for the IT manager...

I worked on $$ million dollar project for an Insurance company and yes, we drastically reduced their policy-writing and claim-processing time. Thanks to Mr. Champy and Mr. Collins. The company achieved huge tangible ROI.

A great book for the first-timers.......2002-06-06
It is a great book for those who have not read any of the Champy/Hammer reengineering books, but would like to understand the reengineering foundation. However, those, who have and practice reengineering or `the art of agility' in corporate America - will be disappointed. The book provides no new solutions to the present chaos in global business. The book does not even identify the systemic problems plaguing corporate America. Forget about connecting the dots, the book cannot even show you the dots. Everyone knows to create harmony or to be good to your customer. It is easy to name companies who are doing well and highlight some general processes even though the same company might file for chapter 11 a few months down the road. The problem is systemic like cancer that pervades the business community as evidenced from great companies like Xerox, Polaroid, Global Crossing, K-Mart, Stage Stores, Worldcom and so on. The book does not identify the problem nor prescribes the life style changing solution. The book does not even complain that the people who work in information technology department have no clue about "information" let alone know how to use them. Everyone in the IT department is an expert in the specific silo based hardware or software tools - but not in the "information". The companies never ask for it and hence never get it. So...nothing new here. The book talks great things about SciQuest. I too had dealings with that company. My impressions were along the line of "Information? - what is that?" Just a simple check of their publicly available financials would tell a different story...

Want to add the next kicker to your business model? Then seriously consider X-Engineering your Corporation. Champy gives solid examples from both high technology 'giants' such as Dell, Cisco and Solectron and more traditional companies in healthcare, financial services and publishing in a good balance that demonstrate how taking a different perspective on your corporation's processes can deliver real results. Extend your processes out to your customers, your suppliers and even your competition to achieve customer informed value propositions that balance between product/service push and market pull. Operate only those processes which are really core to you as internal 'secrets'. Champy gives advice on how companies can stage their X-engineering efforts and gives guidance on common pitfalls.
This book is a good, fast read, sure to excite any executive's mind who wants to position their company to have a sustained advantage and achieve a new platform from which to have options to grow their business.
Inspirational.......2002-04-05
Once again, Jim Champy has is ahead of his time with X-Engineering. I found the book to be another example of visionary thinking as he extends the thinking of corporate reengineering beyond traditional boundaries. The book is informative and inspirational.

A Facinating Journey Through Human History!!.......2001-09-10
I absolutely loved this book! The topic of mummies brings to mind Boris Karloff and the horror flicks. This book makes these amasing finds real...and HUMAN! I found the scholarship to be seemingly complete and accurate and even as a Lay-Person, I could understand what great amounts of information humankind was gleening from the mummies. In fact, I enjoyed reading this 2nd edition so much, I obtainined the 1st edition to have a look at "The Classic" work itself. A truly great adventure.

Enchanting wildlife pictures.......2003-09-13
You may get some funny looks as you stick your head into this book to look through the 3-D glasses, but it is well worth it! There are some remarkable photos; my favorites include the Marine Iguana, the Galapagos shark, and the Stone Scorpionfish (which looks like something from Star Wars). Mark Blum specializes in underwater stereo photography, and some of the underwater photos such as the seahare or spotted moray eel really pop out. There are also the Galapagos favorites such as Sally Light-Foot Crabs and Sea Lions. Only a few of the pictures did not work that well in 3-D, such as the brown pelican, or some of the habitat photos, but provided for well-rounded text. Associated with each of the 44 pictures is a useful paragraph that introduces the species or habitat. For example, I did not know that the sex of the Giant Tortoise offspring depended upon the temperature of the nest. A fun book for any age!
A new hero in the 3D World.......2002-11-26
Worth every penny. Mark's photos are one of the few ways to appreciate the underwater and terrestrial landscape as close to real life as possible, without the hassles of separate glasses.
I felt I was back underwater with Mark's book. If these images moved, it would be more thrilling!

GALAPAGOS IN 3-D
Fabulous book with stereo 3-D photos!
I highly recommended this book for school children and adults alike.
I was introduced to the book by a friend and liked it so much that I sought out and bought all of the 3D books by Mark Blum. I find the price so reasonable that I've since bought more to give as gifts.
I enjoy looking at the 3-D photos even more than my seven year old boy so I already know several adults and children who will be getting this book as a gift.
The technical quality of the photos and printing of the books is very good. A magnifying, stereo viewer is built into a unique bi-fold cover of the book A little research showed that this idea is well over a hundred years old (like stereo photography) but I still find it very innovative because it is so rare and unusual.
The photographer has an inspired eye and top technical skill. Not to mention an amazingly adventurous job. The 3D photos make it easy to imagine yourself scuba diving under a school of hammer head sharks!
The writing accompanying each image adds to the photos with just the right amount of scientific and general information to serve both young and old reader. I like this book very much and I hope you find this review helpful. I recommend looking for the other 3-D books by Blum. They are all great!
How Cool Can a Picture Book Be??.......2001-12-16
This series is plainly one of my all time favorites! All ages will love this book.
Explore the wildlife and landscape of the famous Galapagos islands, above and below the ocean's surface. Galapagos in 3-D is filled with beautiful photography with informative captions. But, if you have normal binocular depth perception, you will be absolutely blown away by the amazing 3-D stereo effect.
Mark Blum is certainly a leading practioner of the difficult art of stereo photography. He has designed and even built his own specialized cameras. He uses cameras capable of seeing the world from the perspective of a tiny shrimp, or giving the viewer a crystaline sense of depth in a vast scene of cactii spreading out to the horizon.
I am especially intrigued by the underwater stereo photographs. The book ends with a magnifacent shot of 2 hammerhead sharks surrounded by a huge shoal of creolefish. The depth effect is incredible!
I simply can't recommend Galapagos in 3-D highly enough! All of Mark Blum's books are superb!
Not just for Kids!.......2001-09-07
The publisher has unfortunately tried to market these fabulous works as childrens books (not that they aren't wonderful for kids as well), but these photos are truely amazing both in the quality of the photography, but also in the presentation. They are printed on very high quality coated paper with a STURDY set of lenses built right into the hard cover, which allows you to view them in all their splendor without any additional equipment.
These are not red/blue lenses! The images are presented in true color stereo pairs and when viewed, merge into a single, dynamic 3D image - WOW! I can't say enough about the overall quality of viewing for ADULTS as well as children.
The price is another thing that confuses me. I don't know why these are so inexpensive? I urge anyone who loves nature to buy all of the books in this series!

A Solid Backpacking Book.......2007-03-30
I bought this book ar EMS in Boston in 1973 when I first started backpacking. the priciples he teaches this book still hold true today. I strongly recomend this book to any novice backpackers, along with Karen Berger's new Hiking and Backpacking. My grandson is learning and enjoying from this edition now. This book is timeless. It is a must read!
A classic.......2006-01-25
I purchased one of the first editions of this classic way back in 1973 or 1974. I still have that book, dog-eared pages and all and consider it the best book on the subject ever written. The hilarious cartoon drawings hit the nail on the head in how they demonstrate visually what the author was trying to convey in words. My edition is somewhat dated now, but the concepts and techniques never really change. This book in my opinion set the standard. During those times I am confined to house and home, I often pull this book off the shelf and thumb thru it. Just looking thru it is enough to get one fired up about getting out. It is a well done...well thought out book with wonderfully creative writing highlighted with comical illustrations. It goes beyond the mechanical technical aspects of backpacking and explores the how and why of the endeavor. I most highly recommend this book for the beginner or experienced hiker.
Wonderful book that desperately needs to be updated........2005-12-04
I am on my second copy of Backpacking One Step At A Time, and have used it for years on end to help fine tune the art of whittling down my weight, and improving the art of backpacking. When friends ask what I would reccomend gear wise, I toss them a copy of this book. But there have been so many advances in ultralight gear over the last 20 + years since the release of this book, that it is woefully behind the times. I love the book, I love the writing style of Mr. Manning, I just wish that there was a 5th or so Edition. I would hate to see the wonderful, and helpful information in this book go to waste because gear technology has changed. There is just too much priceless information to let it slide into oblivion.

The information about general hiking and first-aid tips is very useful. Sections on clothing/sleeping bag fabrics is VERY out of date. Too much has changed with fabric technology since this book was written. I agree that post-1995 backpacking books have more accurate information about modern materials.

I have now read all of Michael Gross' books and each has been a pleasure - all I can ask is, "What next?" All the hallmarks of Gross' style are here, incredibly readable, covering a wide range of topics in a comfortable manner and with a sweeping sense of the history of the subject. Gross is equally at home in the technical details of the garment business, the sociocultural aspects of growing up Jewish in the Bronx and the aesthetics of high fashion photography and his tone is never shrill or polemic. I would have liked to have known more about Tommy Hilfiger and Calvin Klein but at 369 pages the book is already weighty, and I absolutely loved every page on Lauren's childhood. I could have used a bit less business writing. But this is my bias. Who knows maybe there is another Gross book about to spring upon us about Hilfiger, whom Lauren repeatedly mispronounced Hilfinger early on, a perfect example of Gross' eye for the exquisite detail. Gross is a master at his trade and this book is a gem.

I agree with other reviewers who complained that there were not enough pictures and that one could hardly avoid getting confused about all of the different names in Gross's book. It probably is not Gross's fault but to write about Lauren without plentiful photographs is a disservice to any reader. Gotta give it to Gross though. His report is thorough. He deserves 4 stars. His publisher deserves 2 stars.
The book is well worth reading for the education it gives the reader about the clothing business and "designer" labels as well as the telling insights into RL himself. In short, RL has cashed in on the preppy WASP persona but, to this day, doesn't really "get it" himself. Upon being questioned about art in his "WASP" designed house, he cannot identify artists on his wall and brags that he just goes by "feel." Clearly, he doesn't understand that the way of life he imitates includes education and culture, neither of which he has to this very day.
The book is also a wonderful education for the clothes buyer. You know those outlet bargains? I guess they are not, since a whole line goes straight from the factory to the outlet. Did you think that you were the only one who did not buy the $100 blouse at the department store? Looks like no one else buys much either. The money gets made from those pique shirts. Buyer beware.
Another interesting aspect of RL's personality is his "over the top" out of proportion opinion of himself. He actually imagines that JFK, Jr. does not have as famous/interesting of a father as his own son. He hates to party with royalty or even the White House unless he is the star. Can you say Narcissist?

I wonder if "reader" who wrote the first review below works for Ralph Lauren. I bet so. What a personal attack on someone who has obviously worked hard to write a balanced, thorough and honest book. Which this is. Despite Lauren's flip-flopping, first asking for a biography with integrity, then refusing to cooperate when the writer tried to give him what he wanted--a story told in the hysterically funny and revealing author's note at the beginning of the book--Gross not only illuminates Ralph Lauren's business, but also his complex and fascinating character, his tremendous drive and entrepreneurial spirit and the whole world of fashion. He should be proud--not ashamed. And Lauren should count himself lucky that he got a biography of such a high caliber.
Fairly good review of Lauren's work.......2003-02-26
The book gives a fairly good overview of the major stages of Lauren's life and accomplishments. While the chronology is fairly informative, I feel that it focuses more heavily on the personal relationships in Lauren's life. The book falls short in its description of the creative process that Lauren uses and the source of his inspiration and his ability to reinvent itself. The discussion on the business and financial aspects of Lauren's success is fit more for a magazine article than a serouos biographical study -- don't look for any insights here either.
