    Book Description

Product sales, especially for new products, are influenced by many factors. These factors are both internal and external to the selling organization, and are both controllable and uncontrollable. Due to the enormous complexity of such factors, it is not surprising that product failure rates are relatively high. Indeed, new product failure rates have variously been reported as between 40 and 90 percent.
Despite this multitude of factors, marketing researchers have not been deterred from developing and designing techniques to predict or explain the levels of new product sales over time. The proliferation of the internet, the necessity or developing a road map to plan the launch and exit times of various generations of a product, and the shortening of product life cycles are challenging firms to investigate market penetration, or innovation diffusion, models. These models not only provide information on new product sales over time but also provide insight on the speed with which a new product is being accepted by various buying groups, such as those identified as innovators, early adopters, early majority, late majority, and laggards.
New Product Diffusion Models aims to distill, synthesize, and integrate the best thinking that is currently available on the theory and practice of new product diffusion models. This state-of-the-art assessment includes contributions by individuals who have been at the forefront of developing and applying these models in industry. The book's twelve chapters are written by a combined total of thirty-two experts who together represent twenty-five different universities and other organizations in Australia, Europe, Hong Kong, Israel, and the United States. The book will be useful for researchers and students in marketing and technological forecasting, as well as those in other allied disciplines who study relevant aspects of innovation diffusion. Practitioners in high-tech and consumer durable industries should also gain new insights from New Product Diffusion Models.
The book is divided into five parts: I. Overview; II. Strategic, Global, and Digital Environments for Diffusion Analysis; III. Diffusion Models; IV. Estimation and V. Applications and Software. The final section includes a PC-based software program developed by Gary L. Lilien and Arvind Rangaswamy (1998) to implement the Bass diffusion model. A case on high-definition television is included to illustrate the various features of the software. Among the book's many highlights are chapters addressing the implications posed by the internet, globalization, and production policies upon diffusion analysis.

        Description:
The methodological framework proposed in this paper addresses two limitations of the basic Bass diffusion model: that it does not reflect competition among products nor does it forecast demand for products that do not exist in the marketplace. The model consists of four steps. First, to investigate consumer preferences for product attributes, we use conjoint analysis to estimate the utility function of consumers. Next we estimate the dynamic price function of each competing product to reflect technological changes and the evolving market environment. Then we derive dynamic utility function by combining the static utility function and the price function. Finally, we forecast the sales of each product using estimated market share and sales data for each period, which are derived from the dynamic utility function and from the Bass diffusion model, respectively. We apply this model to South Korea's market for large-screen televisions. The results show that (1) consumers are sensitive to picture resolution and cost and (2) in the near future, should the market see the introduction of liquid crystal display (LCD) TVs with screens larger than 50 inches, the high resolution and steep price drop of LCD will lead LCD TVs to capture a larger market share than TVs with other display types. Finally, our results show that TVs with 40-inch screens are preferred over TVs with larger screens.

          Description:
We present a new product choice model in which individual agents are assumed to interact with each other across spatial hierarchies under random Gaussian laws. A restricted form that allows estimation of the model and inference on the random interaction structure on available data is then derived. This is essentially a random coefficients model which we estimate on repeated cross-sectional data for the adoption of video cassette recorders in Britain. It is argued that the random coefficient approach, based on economic and social-theoretic arguments allows for more accurate inference on the structure of social interactions, and thus may provide a useful way to help alleviate the inferential problem caused by the identification issues stated in the literature. This very same problem has for long been at the core of the debate between alternative economic and marketing theories of new product diffusion.

                          Book Description

The topographical and functional architecture of the human brain is highly complex. A profound understanding of this architecture is a prerequisite to understanding the functions and dysfunctions of the brain, to pass examinations in neuroanatomy, and to conduct operations in neurosurgery.
The illustrations in this stereoscopic atlas have been developed with the greatest scientific thoroughness, and using an absolutely new 3D computer model. The use of a complex, stereoscopic visualization procedure presents the reader with a completely new and amazing, yet comprehensible, insight into the human brain.
In combination with the CD-ROM, which contains all 173 illustrations as rotatable 3D models, this book introduces an innovative quality into the conception of spatial structures.
It has never been so easy and fascinating to understand the architecture of the human brain!

The images in this book help present 3 dimensionally, parts of the brain described in neuroanatomy textbooks. I am glad I chose this book.

5 out of 5 stars the best atlas.......2005-10-10

you know brain is very complicate but this atlas will give you the 3dimensional view over it .I suggest every medical student should buy it.

4 out of 5 stars Almost perfect !.......2004-03-20

I bought this book with great expectations. The idea of turning an twisting 3D neuroanatomic pictures around on the computer to gain a better spatial understanding of the structures was the reason I bought it.

                          1) The names of the 3D structures you're actually looking at, either on the computer or in the book, are not written. Therefore you'll have to glance on the opposite page in the book all the time. It would have helped if the name of the structure fx appeared when you scrolled the mouse cursor over it.

                          2) The pictures are nice, but I miss pictures of functional pathways. Not just anatomical structures. Fx pain-pathways. This would, I guess it would make the book much more expensive.

                          3) Theres is no pictures of the spinal cord. I know it's just a small thing but then it wouldn't have taken much effort to include it. I guess. There not many pictures of the brainstem either.

BUT BUT BUT....The book is worth the money, and helped me understand many spatial details fx around the hypothalamus. I'm looking for a second edition....with the small improvements that makes this the perfect book for students to gain a good spatial overview of the CNS.

5 out of 5 stars Intuitive approach to an old problem.......2003-09-13

Most atlas books leave much to the imagination. The pleasure of this book is that 3D is the natural language of Anatomy and the right tool for study of complex objects.

The CD-ROM with this book is worth the double the price alone. The book is a useful companion with a naming atlas opposing each printed 3D image.

A useful and productive tool for study and revision. When used in conjunction with research papers can lead to a faster and more advanced understanding of neural pathways.

Would recommend purchasing spare glasses if you plan to share this book or have extended usage. There are several sources of anaglyph glasses on the internet.

                              Book Description

A deft analysis and appreciation of fiction--what makes it work and what can make it fail. Here is a book about the craft of writing fiction that is thoroughly useful from the first to the last page--whether the reader is a beginner, a seasoned writer, or a teacher of writing. Jerome Stern maintains that learning to write spontaneously is the first step to writing well. You will see how a work takes form and shape once you grasp the principles of momentum, tension, and immediacy. "Tension," Stern says, "is the mother of fiction. When tension and immediacy combine, the story begins." Dialogue and action, beginnings and endings, the true meaning of "write what you know," and a memorable listing of don'ts for fiction writers are all covered. A special section features an Alphabet for Writers: entries range from Accuracy to Zigzag, with enlightening comments about such matters as Cliffhangers, Point of View, Irony, and Transitions.

5 out of 5 stars Best Creative Writing Text I've Used.......2007-08-19

In my experience most creative writing texts are incredibly "fluffY" - very little real information and more concerned with the volume of prompts than with the value of the prompts. This book is quite the opposite; it contains 16 prompts (called "shapes"), a brief section on writing no-nos, an excellent list of other publications useful to the writer of fiction, and a wonderful, selective glossary of fiction writing terminology.

The "shapes" are really explanations of storytelling archetypes of form. Included are The Journey, The Gathering and The Visitation which are rather self-explanatory. Other shapes are less immediately recognizable, but all frequently used storytelling devices. Stern offers brief examples of each shape to help the reader understand and get started. He also references the glossary terms pertinent to each shape.

The glossary itself is as useful, if not moreso, than the shapes themselves. It defines concepts as simple as plot and as esoteric as objective correlative. In almost every definition, Stern makes reference to at least one work of fiction exemplifying the concept and these are a genuine aid to the reader or student in understanding what makes great fiction great.

I couldn't recommend this book more highly. In a recent creative writing class of 20+ people it got universally high marks, and it's the first book I turn to when my own enthusiasm or inspiration are on the wane. A great bargain!

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have for All Fiction Writers.......2004-11-21

I usually don't like reading books of explanation, but was forced to buy this one for my creative writing class. I was shocked and amazed that it kept me interested. I love the fact that Jerome Stern utilizes comedy, so that I'm laughing while I'm learning. The lessons in this book are vital for fiction writers of any level. The information is clearly explained, and at the end of each section the names of other related sections within the book are given. This book is a Must Have, and I would reccomend it to anyone even thinking about writing fiction.

4 out of 5 stars Useful but Spotty.......2004-02-03

The first part of this book feels at times more like criticism of story types than a writing manual. It details how stories have historically been structured and what advantages and disadvantages there are in each shape. Trying to grasp the Onion or the Visitation makes a good academic exercise, but it doesn't really get into the application of the relevant concepts.

The second and third parts are where this book gets useful. The second part is made up of essays on the craft--one on what it means to write what you know (a more inclusive idea than you may have realized) and one on what tragic pitfalls to avoid. Beware, young writer, for many others have fallen in these pits before you, and many more will follow.

The third part is a thorough glossary of writing terms, defined so a layman or a young author can grasp them without struggle. This is probably the most useful part of the book. When your editor, writing workshop, or trusted reviewer starts trying to define the strengths of weaknesses of your writing, you can consult this glossary to find out exactly what is being said. And when you're called upon to lend a hand to your fellow writers, this glossary will be your arsenal of concepts to communicate your meaning.

Advanced or experienced writers may not find much in this book that they haven't encountered already. However, young writers who haven't published their first full book will be able to mine this for ideas, communication, and a way to move forward in their writing.

5 out of 5 stars As a former student of Jerome Stern..........2004-01-04

I had the good fortune to take two classes with Prof. Stern during my creative writing major at Florida State and I still remember now only what a great teacher he was, but also how useful this book was. I was very fortunate to have learned directly from the author. Rumors of him being a "pit-bull" in class are laughable to anyone who knew him, but I suppose such rumors arise around anyone who reaches a certain level of public exposure. From my experience, those who didn't like his classes were generally weak or gutless writers who couldn't take Stern's frank criticism. But that's another topic...

Making Shapely Fiction is not a complete "how to" on writing, but it gives aspiring creative writers a wide variety of ideas that they can put to use immediately. I know my writing improved the day I cracked open this book. Almost every page has something useful for new and experienced writers alike. This book WILL NOT lay out all the steps to writing your first novel (in fact it's probably better suited to short story writing which was Stern's favorite medium), nor will it make up for a poor general education in english. It will however, be a useful addition to any literary arsenal for casual and serious writers alike.

1 out of 5 stars Not enough development of the ideas.......2001-03-01

The "shapes" are not developped enough to be useful in creating a salable story. These are merely toy exercizes good for a college class in which no one expects to write for a living, oir write at all for that matter.

3 out of 5 stars Yep, these dresses are definitely French.......2006-11-05

As a reference for fashion history, this book is very nice. However, the fasions that are included bear only a faint resemblance to what we in the US think of 1920s fashion. Where we think of Flapper Era fashions as characterized by straight lines, dropped waists, and cloche hats, the fashions in this book are a definite departure from that. Most of the dresses have round skirts and definite waist lines. When I say rounded shirts I mean rounded skirts. They are like balloons of fabric. I would recommend this book to those who have a real interest in. or curiosity about French fashion of the 1920's, then this will serve you well. Otherwise it is a disappointment.

                                  5 out of 5 stars fantastic/inspiring.......2005-10-27

I have lots of fashion books and this is one of my favorites just for the illustrations. There is very little text, but again if you want fun and inspiring illustrations this book is the best. I personally like these little drawings better than even Erte's illustrations.

3 out of 5 stars A good book with some flaws..........2005-05-11

Yes this is a good book that captures the general feel of the time-periods. However, as an owner of said book, I must point out that more than a few fashions are repeated in the "years/chapters". This gives the book a clip-art feel and detracts, somewhat, from the over-all quality. The book is all in straight Black & White and some people might be put off by this but it preserves the charm of the periods the book aims to capture. So I say this is a fair purchase for those interested in 20's art and not too obsessed whith graphics.
