Book Description
One of the key constraints to accelerated economic performance in developing countries is, in the authors' view, the absence of strong, dynamic financial systems. Many, if not most, developing countries suffer from repressed financial systems. Thus the most important step in effecting the development of capital markets is to lay a foundation of sound macroeconomic and regulatory policies conducive to financial sector development. This book presents an approach to financial sector reform composed of financial sector diagnosis, policy and institutional targeting, macroeconomic reforms, bank regulation and supervisory reform, and privatization. The work also presents criteria to help decision-makers apply the approach. The issues and approaches presented are as relevant to the emerging democracies of Eastern Europe and such transitional countries as Brazil and Mexico as they are to developing countries. The authors begin with an introductory discussion of the two-pronged strategy of financial reform and privatization and then, in chapter 2, provide an overview of developing financial systems. Chapter 3 discusses the public/private debate. Chapter 4 is devoted to financial sector liberalization, and chapter 5 goes on to discuss the privatization of financial institutions. A framework for financial reform and privatization is presented in chapter 6, and chapter 7 provides concluding comments. In addition, a series of case studies are presented in the appendix. These case studies demonstrate the methods and strategies used to address financial sector reform in Bangladesh, Chile, Guinea, Jamaica, Mexico, and the Philippines. This book will be useful to financial and development experts and to policy makers in countries amenable to changing their financial systems. It would also be appropriate for courses in international economics, international banking, international monetary issues, international finance, and economic development.

From the supplier: A weak legal system can undercut efforts to develop a modern, market-oriented economy. In countries with underdeveloped legal systems, particularly in developing and transition economies, laws may exist only in paper and may not be known or respected by the public or enforced by the government. As a result, crime and corruption may be prevalent while judicial institutions may be slow or unpredictable. Improving the functioning of legal institutions in these countries is a vital component of economic development. There are three ingredients essential to a well-functioning legal system, namely, a supply of market-friendly laws, adequate institutions to implement and enforce them, and a demand for those laws from market participants. These are discussed.

Book Description
Beverly Fletcher takes an "inside out" look at Organization Transformation (OT). OT is a new area of theory and practice which effectively helps organizations make large-scale changes in purpose, structure, culture, and strategy. The past decade has seen rapidly changing environmental conditions which have made previously successful organizational practices ineffective. Economic, cultural, social, and political trends have combined to create a critical need for theories and practices that aid transformative changes in organizations. Fletcher's book explores this topic by studying fourteen selected theorists and practitioners of Organization Transformation. This study has implications not only for organizational behaviorists but for business firms; government agencies; and community, human services, and educational organizations who need assistance with their own transformations. Fletcher has gathered extensive data through in-depth interviewing. She explores this new field by studying the motives and philosophical assumptions of current OT theorists and practitioners. What do they have in common that makes them an identifiable group? On what points do they differ? What do they consider as important contributions of OT? What are their predictions of OT's future impact on organizations? Fletcher focuses on her participants' organizational concepts, beliefs, values, and practices to create a fascinating profile of great use to any agency or organization.

Book Description
William S. Johnson and Dennis M. Allen provide a complete guide to estuarine and coastal zooplankton in North America and the first comprehensive guide to the zooplankton of the Atlantic and Gulf coasts. The scholarly treatment presents technical information in a user-friendly format that facilitates rapid and positive identification. Coverage includes most common zooplankton (and many phytoplankton) of this region. The authors provide detailed instructions for identifying taxa as well as the ecological information to place them in context. The introductory chapters on zooplankton biology and on coastal habitats permit the book's use as both a guide to identification and as a text or supplemental text in marine biology courses.
Key Features· High-quality line drawings that indicate the distinguishing features of most taxa· Use of coloration or movement to help identify living specimens· Information on biology, distribution, and ecology with each identification· Extensive references and suggested readings· Instructions for easy and inexpensive ways to collect and observe zooplankton
Designed specifically for classroom and laboratory use, this book is indispensable for teachers and students of Atlantic and Gulf Coast marine biology. It should also prove useful to professional biologists and amateur naturalists with an interest in zooplankton.
Customer Reviews:
Finally a guide for the east coast plankton!.......2005-05-19
Environmental educators have been waiting a long time for a book on the east coast plankton (as well as the Gulf of Mexico!), but the wait was worth it. Marni Fyling's illustrations are incredibly precise and the accompanying text is both informative and readable. The book is not cheap, but it's what these books seem to cost these days. Particularly for something that will come in so handy.
Book Description
- Timeless stories of how to live in harmony with the Earth. - Stories are presented from a variety of tribes.
Customer Reviews:
Brilliant!.......2000-10-11
This book is enlightening. It retells old tales with beautiful photos. Animals and nature have center stage in the attempts to teach us, to show us, what is important in life. I volunteer at a Wildlife Rehabilitation Center in Illinois and can speak personally of witnessing the intelligence, the playfulness, the connectedness that exists in all creatures. We should cherish the earth, the animals, the plants, they can survive without us, but we wouldn't make it without them.
Extraordinary photography! Witty narration!.......1999-03-08
All creation is connected. This is the underlying theme of "Shared Spirits" as it beautifully depicts Native American thoughts on twelve different species through extraordinary photographs and witty narration. "Considering the struggles we are now having with our own environment, perhaps it is time to listen to some old teachers - the ones who have been here for eons. Native People aren't the original teachers. They simply listened to the rest of the Earth with an open heart, giving voice to bear, eagle, raven and stone, and carried the water through the desert, to us (from the Introduction of Shared Spirits)." Perhaps through works such as this, all creation can learn to live harmoniously together and man can begin to realize that we have been entrusted to be caretakers of this beautiful planet and all of the creation it houses.
Book Description
Roller derby first appeared in Chicago during the Depression. With the advent of television, this dynamic, sometimes violent sport became a national favorite. In Roller Derby to RollerJam, Keith Coppage takes a fond look at the origins, history, and players of the game who made it successful, from promoters to superstars.
Customer Reviews:
A FUN READ.......2006-11-10
For those who grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area in the 60's and early 70's will enjoy this book especially if you were a fan of Roller Derby. It brings back so many memories of all those skaters who gave me their entertainment best. Like pro-wrestling, Roller Derby became more of a sports-entertainment over the years but the performers were still top-rate athletes. A great read.
GRAND SLAM! The Roller Derby fan's Almanac!.......2000-06-27
It's surprising a book is out there--what's more surprising is that it's entertainingly written. You just can't put it down. Full of great stories and beautiful photos. Includes a section on RollerJam that is very informative. If you ever watched the Bay Bombers week after week, you must get this one!
The Best RollerJam/RollerDerby book ever!.......2000-04-26
This was the best book I ever read. It helped me relize all the stuff that gose on in RJ. And as I big fan, and still am, I was stoked! Wow, all RJ fans or soon to be RJ fans should read this book!
It brought back wonderful childhood memories........1999-11-01
I enjoyed reading about a time that I remember & the people I idolized. I would have liked a little more info on some of the past stars such as Gerry Murry, Gene Gammon, The Atkinson's, Ken Monti, LuLu Palermo & other skaters from that era. However, I did enjoy the book & so did my mother. We used to go to the Armory in NYC every Thursday night. It was our night out together. The pictures & history were great.
Go Coppage!.......1999-10-15
I can't think of someone more qualified to write on this subject. I was going to read it and then I said to myself, "Why bother?" :) Great title!
Book Description
With the media hyping so much misleading information about risks, it's a relief to discover True Odds. --John Stossel, ABC News 20/20
Customer Reviews:
In praise of rationality.......2007-08-10
Aims to discuss risks in everyday life at a level "between dense technical volumes
and daffy oversimplifications". Structured around 16 particular topics, from
concrete concerns of individuals (violent crime; cell phones and brain cancer; secondhand smoke) to more general topics (moral hazard of insurance; lotteries are a tax on the stupid). A main focus is on the interaction between scientific data, media reporting, legislation promoted by interest groups, and regulation by government agencies. By presenting these case studies from recent history (1975-1995), the author provides an insightful overview of the real-world interplay of the scientific, psychological and political aspects of dealing with risk. This book is implicitly a well-justified polemic in favor of rational quantatitive risk assessment and against the media scares, extremist environmental lawyers and inflexible "command and control" bureaucracy that waste billions of dollars whose diversion from more rational use causes unnecessary death and suffering.
Though serious, well researched and an engaging read, I do have some quibbles. The
lack of explicit citations makes it unhelpful as scholarship. By mixing several
styles (historical case studies, discussion of scientific methodology, polemic) the
book appears somewhat unfocused. And the unusual typography (a typical page has
seven two-sentence paragraphs separated by white space) reinforces the impression
that the author was assiduous in collecting information but put less effort into
organizing a coherent narrative. Finally, the subtitle is misleading: a reader
seeking a straightforward, detailed and explicit analysis of risks in everyday life
would be better served by Risk: A Practical Guide for Deciding What's Really Safe and What's Really Dangerous in the World Around You.
pro-corporate, anti-values politics mars the science.......2007-07-25
This book is all about facing risks as individuals- which is fine, but it also makes sweeping political judgments based on the assesments. On the section about banning the use of Alar on apples and the politics behind it, he writes- "instead of NRC's estimated cancer risk of 1,462 deaths per million from pesticides on apples, the researchers found only 0.07 per million." Well, that may sound like decent odds for me when deciding to eat an apple, but is it really acceptable to for the unlucky person who does get cancer? The author points out several times that alar is not a pesticide, even while presenting numbers on the cancer risks of pesticides. Alar is a growth regulator,"so they are more colorful and crisp at harvest." I can understand the usefulness of some pesticides, but why should we accept ANY risks from a growth regulator? This isn't family values, or traditional values conservatism, but Dickensian, bean-counting, pure economic right-wing bias. I don't want bias from the left or right, or political interpretations, I just wanted straight facts. This book doesn't leave the findings to stand on their own. Are most popular books about risk assessment thinly disguised pro-corporate propaganda? I hope not.
Practical look at the real odds that threaten people's lives.......2003-02-09
Enhanced with an extended bibliography and an exhaustive index, True Odds: How Risk Affects Your Everyday Life by James Walsh is a very straightforward and practical look of the real odds that threaten people's lives or health. Rejecting anecdotal evidence and media scare tactics for solid, statistical, reliable information on what really are the greatest threats facing life in the modern world, True Odds comes very highly recommended for the non-specialist general reader as being a realistic source of information concerning everything from crime and accident rates to having sufficient money saved upon retirement.
Book Description
Excellent reproductions of high-fashion illustrations from rare issues of French periodical devoted largely to "Paris fashions" for women. Lavish costumes exhibit innumerable variations of "open" and "closed" types of bodices, plus hats often startling in size and color. Descriptive captions.
Customer Reviews:
Great Source of Color Images.......2005-09-17
This book is really useful to me for the color patterns in the fabric as well as the colors for period fashion. Also, hairstyles, hats, and even shoes are detailed enough to reference for my own illustrations.
The original journal, "Petit Courrier des Dames", was for the wealthy and fashionable woman. It was so popular in Paris that the English translated it for the fashionable Englishwomen who looked to France for the latest styles. The plates feature fashions for both wealthy women and men with captions that generally state the type of material used or some brief descriptive detail
(ie: "Rice-straw hat, jaconet dress, French cashmere shawl. [No. 835; September 25, 1831.]")
Pictures show costumes front and back views, standing and seated (mostly the women). There is 1 plate of young boys' costumes, 5 of Gentlemen, and the rest are of Ladies with 1 small collection of bonnets.
Each page offers two separate costumes.
There is a two page Introduction that explains the original French source material for Dover's edition, brief summary of characteristics of Men's, Children's and Women's fashion in the Romantic Era, and a compact glossary of materials and garments now with a loose English equivilent material.
The one tiny issue I have is that the edition I received sported a different cover than the pink one above. The interior content is the same.
Wonderful Resource!.......2001-09-01
This book is a great resource for the re-enactor or costumer. It can be considered primary documentation, as it is directly reprinted from the original. There's a very handy glossary in the front, in case you are not already familiar with mousselain-de-soie. I wish I could make every dress in the book--it's so hard to choose only one of these delightful gowns!
