SMEs in the Age of Globalization

The purpose of this volume is to bring together the leading scholarly papers about how globalization has impacted the role of SMEs. In fact, globalization has affected SMEs in two major ways. The first has been to facilitate the transnational activities of SMEs. Transnational activities, ranging from exports to foreign direct investment to participating in global value chains, have become easier as a result of globalization. The second impact of globalization has been to shift the source of competitiveness towards knowledge-based economic activity, which has led to an increased role for SMEs. The first section of this volume examines how globalization has affected the role of SMEs in the economy. The second section of the volume is devoted to global strategies by SMEs. The third section focuses on an important type of global activity of SMEs, which involves foreign direct investment. The fourth section focuses on the role of clusters and networks in generating SME competitiveness in global markets. SME export strategies and performance is analyzed in Section Five. Section Six examines the impact that the international mobility of labor has had on SMEs. The seventh section focuses on the role that SMEs play in trans-national technology transfer. Section Eight is devoted to SMEs in the context of developing countries. In the final section of the volume policy issues are raised. This includes identifying how policy needs to address barriers to internationalization confronting SMEs.

Langton pulls together a number of interesting papers from the Los Alamos a-life conference, bound with the perspective only he can provide. Great for the technically-minded curious but most promising as storehouse of ideas for experimentors in dynamic adaptive systems.

Good Introduction to Bighorn Sheep - Beautiful Photography.......2003-10-07

We were doing some late spring climbing in Death Canyon. Bighorn sheep were rare enough in the Tetons in the late 1960s that park rangers asked us to report back if we encountered them. We saw no evidence of sheep. Thirty five years later my son observes bighorn sheep above him in in a narrow couloir in upper Targhee Canyon, slightly below the pass with Death Canyon. Casually mentioning this sighting to a Teton ranger, he learns that bighorn sheep are now frequently observed.

Bighorn sheep are returning to their native North American habitats. The all-time low of 9,000 bighorn sheep in 1960 has been replaced today by an impressive number of 70,000 sheep. Excessive hunting was partly responsible for their decline, but the primary cause had been disease from domestic sheep. Hunting today is well managed; disease can still completely eliminate a small herd.

Mountain Monarchs: Bighorn Sheep is an attractive, soft cover, glossy publication by NorthWord Wildlife Series. Beautiful photography is found on nearly every page.

The author, Bert Gildart, targets a general audience that shares his enthusiasm for native wildlife. At some points I found his explanations, like the food pyramid, to be too basic. Overall his style remains interesting, especially his personal observations of sheep behavior. He is careful to attribute his facts to specific wildlife biologists and naturalists.

Mountain Monarchs: Bighorn Sheep is a good introduction to a remarkable animal. I particularly liked the section on the adaptation of the bighorn sheep to its harsh environment and the descriptions of the incredible battles between males for dominance. I now understand more about interpreting the shape and detailed appearance of the magnificently curved horns of the bighorn sheep. The appendix contains an updated population census for the varieties of wild sheep by state and province.

Books about rowing are rare enough. Books about women rowing or paddling are even rarer. Along with "The Red Rose Crew," "Water's Edge" is a lovely addition to this tiny category. In an unusual and delightful "double funnel" structure, the book begins with the most structured form of rowing, crew, then narrows to individual sports such as racing singles and single kayaking and canoeing, and then widens again to double canoeing and kayaking and finally ends with the "Back River Seven," a group of seven women who canoed one of the most remote rivers in North America, the Back River in the Canadian Arctic. Interestingly, a second layer of structure governs the book, moving from the most controlled settings, regattas, to the wildest, represented by two chapers, one on the Back River Seven and another on Valerie Fons who, with her husband, paddled over 21,000 miles, almost entirely by river, from Canada's Northwest Territories to Cape Horn, at the southern tip of South America.

If it seems I'm overly stressing the structure of the book, it's because it's part of what makes the book so rewarding and fulfilling to read. It covers a wide range of methods of moving boats by hand, and the structure gives the book a lovely cohesiveness and unity. The stories of the women themselves, of course, are stirring and inspiring. In most cases, these are women who have had to fight for recognition in their sports or, in the case of Ernestine Bayer (gnerally acknowledged as the matriarch of U.S. women's rowing) to have a sport at all.

"Water's Edge" really should be read in concert with "The Red Rose Crew." As it happens, I read "The Red Rose Crew" first, and it feels as if that's the proper order. In any case, they make excellent companions. They both describe the efforts of women to reach the heights of excellence in their sports and, along the way, bring to vivid life feats of courage, endurance, and sheer, gut-wrenching tenacity at which we can only marvel. One of the women, for example, explains that she doesn't really like racing because she doesn't like the taste of blood in her mouth afterwards. But perhaps the most epigrammatic quote of all is Valerie Fons's description of what she learned on her epic pole-to-pole canoe trip: "Fear is a door, not a wall. Once you choose courage, you begin practicing it. Then it's all the easier to choose courage again. Overcoming fear is the thing I know about. Some songs you can sing because that's where your voice fits."

Such a great book. The history lesson alone makes it all worth while but even an experienced rower will find things to learn. Well written and an easy read. Looks like it's hard to find but give it a shot. I just found it at one of those sidewalk stands in New York and was looking to pick up a copy for an old college friend. Guess I'm stuck with a used copy for him.

Praise to Overlook Press for getting this back in print. I have the hardcover first edition from 88, and it is one of the best designed books on my shelf. Unlike the usual blood and glory books on the sport: Halberstam and Kiesling, this one gets the job done in explaining a pretty opaque sport to the layman as well as the novice. Good history for the avid oarsperson too.

This is a classic overview of a classic sport, written from a ground-up perspective for the complete novice as well as experienced rowers looking for a good history. Churbuck takes the reader from the basic and mechanics of rowing to the history and traditions of the sport. There is some good how-to advice from rowing machines to sculling.

A Confused Laundry List.......2000-08-24

Derek Hutchinson has led kayaking expeditions around the world and teaches highly regarded seminars on the sport. However, he seems unable to clearly translate this teaching ability to print. This book reads like a laundry list of things to do in a kayak: equipment choices, paddle strokes, rescue techniques, rolling, surfing maneuvers, etc.; without rhyme or reason as to their purpose or when they should be executed. The book does cover a complete range of topics relevant to the sea kayaker: all topics just mentioned plus weather, tides, navigation, wind, etc. Unfortunately, many sections are out-of-date, such as the equipment section; a lot of information, such as that on nautical charts and on weather, is specific to kayaking in Britain; and some information, such as that on tidal currents, is just plain wrong. I did learn quite a lot from the sections on turning strokes and eskimo rolling, but not as much as I feel I should have and not enough to know where or when to use a particular technique. Overall, I was disappointed with the quality of instruction presented in this book.

Learned everything I needed to know about sea kayaking........1999-07-20

Derek Hutchinson really went to the extent in this book. It was really helpful. Definateley gave history, tips, and techniques. It was a very effective book for beginers like myself. Well drawn diagrams of techniques made learning easy and fun. Hutchinson really gave it all to you. It was exently written.

It all depends on what kind of review book you are looking for to study for the CCRN. This book is generalized and broad. I prefer study guides that do not make you go to other references to relearn what you need to know. I like it all in one place.

I am studing with ICU nurses for the CCRN exam and we have a variety of books to study from. This book is very straight forward and to the point. It is in outline form with just enough info to either confirm your knowledge basis or to let you know that you need to "dig" for more. Each and every section is correlated with the outline from AACN for studing for CCRN exam. The rest is up to me - see you at the testing center.

This is an excellent book for anyone trying to learn western brush lettering. First, the book discusses in detail how to choose and care for materials including brushes, paper and various media types.

For both flat brush & pointed brush writing, the book shows exactly what the strokes should look like & how to hold the brush properly. There are several warm-ups these really helped me prepare to start writing.

Some flat brush alphabets covered included are Roman & Italic Minuscules as well as Flourished Italic & Roman Capitals. Pointed brush styles include Pointed-Brush & Copperplate Scripts. Flourishing is also shown.

Both flat & pointed brush styles have sections on adapting them for other alphabets. In the back, there is a wonderful artist showcase. All artwork is black & white.
