Sovereign risk and financial crises play a key role in current international economic developments, particularly in the case of economic downturns. As the Asian economic crisis in the late 1990s revealed once again, financial crises are the rule rather than the exception in capitalist economies. The event also revealed that international public debt agreements are contingent claims. In a world of increasing economic interdependencies, the issues of financial crises and country defaults are of critical importance. This volume goes to the heart of the academic discussion on sovereign risk and financial crises by centering on quantitative-empirical aspects, evaluating prominent approaches, and by proposing new methods. Part I of the volume identifies key factors and processes that are central in analyzing sovereign risk while Part II focuses on the determinants and effects of financial crises.

Description:
This study investigates the role of credit rating agencies in international financial markets. With an index of speculative market pressure it is analyzed whether sovereign ratings changes have an impact on the financial stability in emerging market economies. The event study analysis indicates that sovereign rating changes have substantial influence on the size and volatility of emerging markets lending. The empirical results are significantly stronger in the case of government's downgrades and negative imminent rating actions than in the case of agencies' positive rating adjustments. Sovereign rating changes anticipated by market participants have a smaller impact on financial markets in emerging economies.

This book is a unique guide for both external consultants and internal change agents for facilitating change in an organization. It also identifies the components that are necessary to ensure an organization's success. Mink's nine-window model, discussed in the book, offers an excellent at-a-glance framework to assist organizations in identifying where they are, in regards to a functional and open organization. The nine-window model may be a tool that change agents can use to demonstrate (to others) their organization's readiness for a fully open organization.
The book is an excellent reference resource for designing and implementing change initiatives. Consultants, change agents, managers, human resource executives and others will find this book a very practical guide for organizational change.

Manatees are NOT Pinnipeds!.......2001-07-04
From the title, it appears that this book is supposed to be strictly about animals of the order "Pinnipedia," that is, animals that are flipper-footed. This order includes the true seals, sea lions, and walruses. The book starts off well enough with beautiful photographs and good descriptive text, but on page 63, Cleave inexplicably groups walruses and manatees together as if manatees also belong to this order. Manatees, while bearing perhaps a slight resemblance to walruses, are of the order "Sirenia" (manatees and dugongs) which are actually more closely related to elephants than to any marine mammal. Furthermore, while pinnipeds are piscivorous (fish-eating) and can spend part of their lives out of the water (i.e., on land or ice), manatees are herbivores and totally aquatic. The author does not point out these distinctions and thus this chapter is very misleading. Hopefully this will be remedied in any further printing of this book; in the meantime, anyone using this book as a reference should keep this in mind (indeed much more authoritative sources should be used instead such as Marianne Riedman's book "The Pinnipeds: Seals, Sea Lions, and Walruses" or "Seals of the World" by Judith King).

Well written,sensitive book about superb athlete.......2003-07-05
THis is one of the best sports biographies I have read.Its very well written, very unbiased,sensitive and portrays an accurate picture of this amazing human being. Its also a fun read and reveals a side of the Babe,her pranks,egocentric often annoying style, that few knew.In my mind she surely was the greatest woman,s athlete and this book truly does her justice.You won,t be disappointed
Interesting Read of Champion Who Doesn't Get Enough PR.......2002-01-12
Amazing champion this lady was. Her accomplishments in a short life are dazzling. Like many others naturally gifted with athleticism and a burning desire to compete and win, Babe did just that.
This is well written, but suffers from my own perspective with an underlying desire to document how cruel and unmodern Babe's cultural times were to not allow lesbian relationships to be openly exposed and women to be subjected to conformity.
We live in just the reversal, where abnormality shines brightly as acceptable or even desirable, and where has this sexual revolution gotten our society?
Babe loved the game of golf, and my interest was primarily in this achievement area of her career. She should deserve more recognition as one of the game's truly greats!

Since I am from Beaumont, Texas (South Park) and a fan of the BABE, I found the book a very interesting read. I was unaware of the Babe's relationship with Betty Dodd; however, I feel that an individual's sexual life is their own business. I can't help but wonder how the author could have been sure of their special relationship without ever being in the same bedroom with them??? Changing her colostomy bag is hardly a sexual act, but the type of action from a nurse, close relative or friend.
The work of a gifted writer and teacher who did her homework.......1999-08-23
As a former student of Dr. Susan Cayleff, I found the book to be a wonderful and informative read. Knowing Dr. Cayleff and her constant search for truth and knowledge of women and their accomplishments, this book is one more testament to her thoroughness, her brilliance as an academic, and the passions that she imbues in her students - - the fire of wanting to know more about women,who and what they are, who and what they have been, and who and what they can become. Anything that Dr. Cayleff writes stands as witness to her intellect, her love of the written word, and her desire to spread the joyous news of women's feats and accomplishments. Is it any wonder that this book was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize? Keep them coming Susan. The next one will be terrific too, after all, I had the opportunity to be one of your research assistants for the next book. Thank you for all of it, the books, the awareness that you instilled and inspired in so many of your students and readers, for your caring about humanity in general, and women in particular.
A great analysis of Babe's life, times, & women's sports.......1999-01-29
Cayleff has thoroughly researched and documented Babe's life and times. She conducted extensive interviews with surviving members of Babe's family, friends, and partner (Betty Dodd). Cayleff also incorporated massive amounts of journalistic accounts--sports writers, magazines accounts, etc. This is not a fluff biography--the book will teach you about what it meant to be a woman in Babe's time, what it meant to be a female athlete, and how Babe managed--and manipulated--these things. Babe fans will learn more about her, and scholars will be able to follow up on Cayleff's work through her extensive endnotes. This is the first book to tell of Babe's relationship with Betty Dodd, but Cayleff does not label it "lesbian." That is because Babe herself never did. Remember that this was the 1950s. They were life partners, spouses. The loved each other. Cayleff's book is important for bringing this relationship to light, as well as many other hidden realities of Didrikson's life--her heroism as an "out" cancer patient (when it was taboo to talk about it), as well as how Babe manipulated the press. As dozens of published book review has stated (see quotes above at this cite), this is absolutely THE most extensive research ever done on Babe. I've seen rave reviews of the book in SOJOURNER, WEST COAST WOMAN, WOMEN'S REVIEW OF BOOKS, and SPORTS HISTORY REVIEW, among many others.

For word lovers to take a tour of words in a different way.......2006-01-05
This is not a dictionary, a thesaurus, or a book of formal etymology. So, what is it? Well, it takes the word lover on a tour of approximately 1,500 words. We get to find out not only a definition of the word, but its history. How it came to be. Yes, there is some etymology (study of word origins) in this, but the way a word comes to mean what it does can take surprising turns that its origins do not explain. (Also, within some of these histories, the authors provide words of similar origins and histories, so it really is more than 1,500 words.)
While you can use this book to look up words, there are so relatively few that you will more likely miss more often than you will hit. What the book is really for is to fill a few extra minutes with a tour of something fascinating and to learn something you probably did not know. If you just sit down for hours reading many pages of the book you will actually not remember all the things you should. So, it is better to dip into this book frequently for short periods and think about the few words you read about and commit their history to memory rather than pushing your way through hundreds of pages that will evaporate the moment you close the book.

A little of this goes a long way. This is ok if you are reading it now and then. The articles are short enough to do that. It would be tedious to read this in any sustained way, however.
Know the priceless history of those great 25 cent words.......2001-03-12
'SIDEBURNS - During the American Civil War, the Union general Ambrose Everett Burnside wore long bushy side-whiskers. His appearance first struck the fancy of Washingtonians as he conducted parades and maneuvers with his regiment of Rhode Island volunteers...the fashion for such whiskers later came to be called burnsides. A later anagram of his name gives us the word sideburns.'
This handy reference is for the wordsmith or curious fact-finder. Behind each word lie stories from the past and famous imaginations. How words were written, understood, passed on, misused - they all lead to explanations for our understanding of them today. Origins of words like bikini, hippopotamus, and atlas are contained here. Here is a wonderful collection of 1,500 word histories. This book goes beyond the typical etymology by providing the Story behind each of the selected words. Though the scholarship on the etymology of the word is not thorough (no roots, little in the way of derivation, no Indo-European development) the writing is clear, witty and conversational. The best book on the market for under $20 (and a real bargain at Amazon's price). Recommended.

The Merriam Webster New Book of Word Histories contains an excellent sytle of writing. It is the most detailed book of it's kind in paperback form. If you are looking to expound your vocabulary, this book covers it all from A-Z. Try it you'll love it.
