    Book Description

    Coined in 1902, the term "standard of living" grew popular in early twentieth-century America, and though its exact definition remained ambiguous, it most often reflected the middle class and their material comfort. The term was not a precise measure of how people lived. Instead, it embodied the ideal of how middle-class Americans wanted to live. With increasing wages and the mass production of consumer goods, the standard of living became an important expression of the shared national culture that emerged in the Gilded Age and Progressive Era. But what material and social components constituted this standard? Who decided what they were and how they were to be promoted?

    In Standard of Living, Marina Moskowitz explores these questions, focusing on the relationship between middle-class identity and material culture through four case studies. In one, she examines the incorporation of silverplate flatware into the daily rituals of American life. Mass production made this former luxury item affordable, while advertising, etiquette books, and home advice columns stressed its value as a family heirloom and confirmed its place in the middle-class dining room. Moskowitz then turns her attention to the bathroom and the proliferation of indoor sanitation, bathroom fixtures, and a hygiene industry equally interested in profits and public health. Home ownership contributed an essential element of this standard, and Moskowitz next charts the mail-order home industry, which sold not just kit houses but also the very idea of owning a home. Concluding with a look at zoning and urban planning as a means of fostering and protecting the standard of living for whole communities, this book offers important evidence of and fresh insights into the history of the American middle class.

                    I agree with the earlier reviewer. If you are looking for a book on the ACTUAL SPREAD OPTION OFFENSE, this isn't it. This a Run-N-Shoot coach or spread passing coach who runs a little option because it looks good on paper. I suggest you look elsewhere for a hardcore option book.

                    1 out of 5 stars Coaching the Spread Option Offense.......2003-02-15

                    If you are looking for a book about the actual "spread option offense" that has been popularized by Georgia Southern and that Navy used to thrash Army this year, buy "Coaching Football's Spread Offense", by Tim Stowers (who coached at Georgia Southern) and Barry Butzer. Granger's book is a about his own hodge-podge scheme that is far more complicated than a high school offense need be. Granger is one of those offensive coaches who makes the mistake of puting quantity before quality, as his offense more resembles a "video-game" approach to the sport.

                    Finally, a clear,concise guide to good grammar that anyone can use. Amusingly written and filled with insight, 'Grammar Traps' is an authoritative guide for the professional writer, the student, and the lay person who just wants to be able to write clearly. 5 out of 5 stars Lay? Lie? I FINALLY know!.......2004-04-09

                    Thank you, thank you, thank you Mr. Stephen Dolainski, for making grammar simple. I don't know how I finished school (including college) taking only one grammar class. I knew the "their, there and they're" routine...but lay and lie were beyond my comprehension. Now I know, and it's so simple (and I'll admit I've been using it wrong all these years.) This book should be a "must read" for those students still attending high school, and a definite "must buy" for those parents sending their kids off to college, especially if they want to see "A's" on their children's term papers.

                    5 out of 5 stars Grammar for Everyone.......2004-03-28

                    As an avowed grammar junkie, I love Grammar Traps by Stephen Dolainski. The book is not only chock full of helpful tips, but it is written simply and clearly so that those who aren't so fond of grammar can find what they need without fuss. Examples are plentiful and to the point. I would recommend this title to anyone who would like to be sure of themselves when they write, as well as anyone needing a general brush-up on grammar. I think business people would find the no-nonsense approach particularly appealing. Thanks, Mr. Dolainski, for making what can be a very confusing subject eminently understandable.

                    Book Description

                    Nancy MacDonell Smith explores the origins, meaning, and remarkable staying power of the ten staples of feminine fashion:
                    * the little black dress
                    * the white shirt
                    * the cashmere sweater
                    * blue jeans
                    * the suit
                    * high heels
                    * pearls
                    * lipstick
                    * sneakers
                    * the trench coat
                    Tracing the evolution of each item from inception to icon status, she reveals the history and social significance of each, from the black dress's associations with danger and death to the status implications of the classic white shirt. Incorporating sources from history, literature, magazines, and cinema, as well as her own witty anecdotes, Smith has created an engaging, informative guide to modern style.

                    5 out of 5 stars Enjoyable, informative and surprising.......2005-10-26

                    While I would still qualify this as "light" reading, it's an intelligent read about a subject some have written off as too inconsequential and that others have elevated to deadly seriousness. This book strikes a nice balance, coming from the point of view that our clothing says a lot about us, whether we are conscious of it or not.

                    While I appreciated the author's writing style and observations (I burst out laughing when she described wannabe hip hop fans in pursuit of the perfect sneaker as foot fetishists), she didn't go out of her way to be too clever or witty (although she did quote quite a few people who arguably do, especially the designer- Manolo Blahnik?- who declares that it's all about extremities and the rest of the body is boring. Okay...) In the ten main chapters, the book provides a history of the evolution and a commentary on the social significance of each of the classic ten style items, almost all of which are interspersed with personalities who embodied the spirit of the item. (It should be noted that Audrey Hepburn and Coco Chanel made an appearance in almost every chapter. Where would modern fashion be without them?)

                    Some points that will stay with me: the seventies/early eighties trend towards natural and the cosmetics executive who bragged about her skill applying twelve different products to achieve the natural look; the evolution of the men's suit to embody the Greek (Greco-Roman) ideal of the perfect body; the foot fetishisms that seem to inform so many footwear designs (and a deplorable ad by Apostrophe involving fetishism and murder- remind me not to buy any of their shoes!).

                    While I couldn't argue with her choices, I found it odd that she did not include black boots or the perfect scarf in her list. That may have pushed her over the all-important number ten, but since she sort of cheated in her discussion of the white shirt (which refers to both the button down version and the T-shirt), I think she should have found a way. But that's a very minor complaint.

                    If you're interested in fashion history and modern dress, this will be an enjoyable read.

                    4 out of 5 stars Lots of fun and familiar.......2004-02-03

                    It's hard to find good, lively fashion writing that's geared to the consumer -- not just to the elite insiders working in the fashion industry. This book fills a need for the everyday fashionista who loves to read intelligent copy about clothes, especially the classics already in her closet. The author knows her subject and her affection is contagious.

                    There's nothing much new here, but still, it's loads of fun to rehash. Reading these essays, I had a vague sense that I'd read some of the material in several other places by several other authors -- such is the familiarity of the Little Black Dress, for example. (Everyone wants to own the LBD and every fashion writer in America has written about it. Ditto the trench coat.)

                    But don't let that spoil the fun and romance of this delightfully fun read! It's a great little tribute to the classics, and deserves a place on your nightstand.

                        Book Description

                        Do you want a better understanding of who your customers are? Do you want to learn how to acquire the customer voice? The next decade will be the decade of the customer. Meeting their wants, needs, and desires better than anyone else will be paramount to your organization's success. Acquiring, Processing, and Deploying Voice of the Customer gives you the tools you need to develop a Voice of the Customer (VOC) plan from beginning to end. Shillito describes the delicate customer-company balance. He covers the various components types of VOC such as voice of the company, voice of the designer/engineer, and voice of marketing that must be integrated through the use of an interdisciplinary team to achieve a sustainable competitive advantage for the enterprise. The author not only discusses VOC but also includes a hybrid model - Customer Oriented Product Concepting (COPC) - for deploying VOC into a product or service design that balances the needs of the customer with the needs of the enterprise. All of these elements go into developing a successful VOC process. However, timing is key. Shillito presents a step-by-step template for integrating VOC into the fuzzy front end of the commercialization process. He demonstrates how product development teams can get an early focus and stay on course during the commercialization process. The book provides a set of breakthrough tools that may be used to obtain and deploy VOC. The most comprehensive VOC guide available, Acquiring, Processing, and Deploying Voice of the Customer provides you with the techniques required to shape a product or service so that their elements balance customer and company needs while being affordable to both. It describes qualitative and quantitative processes integrated into a system to determine the customer's wants and how you can meet them. The new methods found in this book will put you ahead of your competition and ahead of the crowd.

                        Book Description

                        Enterprising Slaves & Master Pirates is an interdisciplinary account of economic life in the Bahamas. The Bahamas' economic story is an interesting tale, full of vibrant color-a story of short-lived booms followed by protracted busts, where discussions of economic success force us to mention fanciful figures such as the pirates Blackbeard and Calico Jack, and where accounts of economic woe, such as the collapse of the cotton market, are punctuated by descriptions of the clamor of Sunday markets or the unique practice of self-hire. Since the almost simultaneous settling of the Bahamas by pirates and Puritan farmers in the 17th century, two ideal typical entrepreneurs have dominated the region's economic life: the enterprising slave (encouraging Bahamian businessmen to work hard, to be creative and to be productive) and the master pirate (demonstrating how success is more easily attained through cunning and deception). In addition to Caribbean Studies scholars, this book will appeal to students of culture interested in economic development, and economists interested in how culture impacts development efforts.

                        5 out of 5 stars How Culture and her Institutions Matter!.......2007-07-24

                        Does culture matter for the economic and social development of a nation?

                        V. Storr certainly believes it does. And in his "Enterprising Slaves and Master Pirates," he places culture as the most important factor in this contribution to the understanding of economic life in the Bahamas.

                        Contra most economists, Storr provides readers with a "thick description" of Bahamian economic life instead of the vogue - and ersatz - "thin" interpretation of "econometrics," or the method most historians have done away with "cliometrics." Storr sets the stage for his "thick description" by speaking to the work of Ludwig von Mises and Max Weber. These intellectual lions, and Storr, aver that practitioners of the social sciences ought not to ape the methods of the natural sciences due to the social sciences being causal-interpretive. And hence, the social sciences should be focused on meaning (verstehen), not naive correlation.

                        In this work, Storr develops Kirznerian entrepreneurship by calling attention to a few ideal-typical attributes of the successful entrepreneur: Awareness and Discovery. In so doing, Storr makes known that while entrepreneurs are omnipresent, the numerous and varied opportunities open to them are circumscribed by culture. Moreover, and perhaps unwittingly, Storr provides insight into why the descendants of Bahamian "enterprising slaves" and "master pirates" outperform blacks born and raised in the United States.

                        This is an excellent work. The price is very high, but if you enjoy Weberian/Misean socio-economics, Enterprising Slaves and Master Pirates is a must own!

                            Book Description

                            With the financial support of the Division for Maritime Transport of the Dutch Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Water Management, Policy Research Corporation N.V. has carried out a Caribbean SWOT analysis. Two sectors were examined: container shipping and cruising. Included in the study was a comprehensive scan of the competitive position of Caribbean ports with respect to the main container trade routes or cruise loops within the region. The main analyses, findings and conclusions of this study are brought together in Strategies for Global and Regional Ports. The conclusions presented in the book are largely based on information gathered during fact-finding missions in the wider Caribbean region. During these missions several interviews with key players were conducted, including port authorities, terminal-operating companies, shipping and forwarding agents. In addition, the wide experience gained by the project team and other Policy Research staff members in the course of prior research projects also provided useful material.
