if you are interested in driving draft horses, this book really should be on your bookshelf. no matter what your question, the answer, if it exists, is in there somewhere. the text is dense, but the copious diagrams and photos are there to provide a visual example of what they are talking about. want to hitch two horses on the wheel, and three in front? the discussion on why you might want to starts on page 240, and the diagrams start on 242.
this book provides you all the information you would be able to get from that old farmer who lived down the road and worked horses his entire life, if they still lived there. if they don't, you are fortunate that someone who understood it all wrote it down.
while there are other draft horse books on my shelves (actually, there are quite a few, from the look of it). i have a copy i keep at my desk, which is still clean, and a copy i keep in the barn, which isnt. the others are good to have, this is essential.

Sets the standard on the subject of Draft Horses.......1998-09-17
Looking for a book that deals with today's draft horse? This is it. The Draft Horse Primer describes today's breeds and the contributions they can and are still making to society. In addition, it deals with care, breeding, harnessing, and non-mechanical (i.e. old-timey) horse-drawn equipment. Lots of pictures illustrate the text. A fun book for the Draft Horse enthusiast and a useful one for those wishing to return to the horse-drawn days of yesteryear.

A "standard work" in draft horse literature.......1997-10-15
The author describes this book as an assemblage of materials from published land-grant school materials of the 20's and 30's, articles in "The Draft Horse Journal," articles in "Western Horseman" and "Organic Gardening and Farming," and some new material. A fair percentage of the book is more-or-less generic horse material - hoof care, breeding, feeding, housing and the like. Although interspersed with comments specific to draft horses, much of this could well have been left out. There is a large section on horse-drawn machinery, but this is starting to look dated. The emphasis is on traditional/antique horse-powered and drawn machinery of a type that is getting harder to find. There's a rising interest in adapting tractor equipment to horse-drawn use these days through the use of forecarts, which the book barely touches. The most valuable section of the book may be the section on harness and harnessing, which gives specifics on a wide range of hitch types. The next-to-last chapter is titled "sidelines" and covers several topics including decoration and logging. It's interesting reading but doesn't go into enough detail to be very useful. This is a worthwhile book to own. It probably is "must" reading for someone new to draft horses, but really points up the need for a tighter, more focused book that is up-to-date.

I am glad to have this book. It is wonderful addition to my collection of firearms books. Two things keep it from being great, in my opinion.
First, the books seems to be more a patched together collection of essays and stories than a real book. Certain incidences are repeated for instance, and pictures are used more than once in spite of the author's contention that there were too many to choose from. Ultimately the book lacks that consistancy and cohesiveness that a "written from scratch" book would have.
Second, the author likes to write about himself almost as much as he does his subject. This is easy to take in small doses, like a magazine article, but in a book it becomes bothersome after a while. The author is certainly knowledgable, but I bought the book to learn more about the subject material, not the author. All in all it's a very good read that could have been better.
A very Complete Book.......2005-09-29
This is a very detailed exploration of large caliber handguns as they developed from the second quarter of the 19th Century until the eve of the 21st. The historical data is accurate and the content generally useful for enthusiasts. There are loads for the various calibers -often taylored for specific guns.
The author covers the large caliber revolvers, autopistols and single shots, the literature on the subject and his own experiences with the various arms so thoroughly that the reader of Big Bore Handguns may deservedly consider himself well-read on the subject.

this is an excellent book about large caliber handguns mr taffins writing is to the point and very informative .I have a large firearms library and this is one of the best books on revolvers i have read .

Irresistible Lists to Fill the Gaps in Your Stalled Thinking.......2000-06-06
Ever since The Loyalty Effect was published, companies have come to understand that it is usually far more profitable to keep existing customers than to acquire new ones. Since companies usually focus more on getting the new ones, that left a problem for executives: What are good ways to retain customers?
The book vaults into the gap by addressing major areas like creating a better bundle of products and services (offer stamps in a card shop in a tourist town like Williamsburg where the post office has long lines), add incentives (free gifts, coupons, rebates, special financing, and contests), tap into or build communities of interests (like those who love Harleys), building trust by standing behind your work (deliver what you promise and make good if you don't), give first in order to receive (this often means helping a charitable purpose with some of your proceeds), reward all customers as though they are your best customer (with a smile, recognition, respect, etc.), treat your best customers even better (they account for 80 percent of profits and there aren't very many of them), make it easy (automatic reorder and replenishment), go to your customers, personalize what you offer to your customers, and become a champ at customer service.
These are all valid concepts, and seeing 100 or so examples of each point makes it easier to imagine how to apply these principles to your own business. That's the strength of the book.
My only quibble was that it seemed like the examples pretty much came from the same companies in each area. I think I now know more about Merrie Maids than I really need to know, and a lot of the examples are pretty obvious. Usually books of lists have more variety and more intriguing examples.
Perhaps this limitation is just because this subject hasn't been thought about enough. I hope the authors come back with an update on this book in a few years with zingy examples that are based on things you, the reader, have developed as a result of studying this book.

I liked this book. All companies depend on one thing only; customers. And "1001 Ways to Keep Customers Coming Back" empasizes this point which, although, should be clear with all managers and business owners, is not. The book introduces basic ways of keeping your customers happy and how to "promote" you company or product so that you gain customer loyalty. I think this is a good book for everyone in the business world.
