Book Description

Economic and financial time series feature important seasonal fluctuations. Despite their regular and predictable patterns over the year, month or week, they pose many challenges to economists and econometricians. This book provides a thorough review of the recent developments in the econometric analysis of seasonal time series. It is designed for an audience of specialists in economic time series analysis and advanced graduate students. It is the most comprehensive and balanced treatment of the subject since the mid-1980s.

4 out of 5 stars Engaging examples. Common sense approaches........1999-01-29

Whether you read the book from cover to cover or skim it, there are many strong examples and sound business principles crammed between the covers. It draws from and references classical customer-driven management theories and practices, yet manages to give a fresh approach. I was able to glean new ideas for helping to make my company more focused on the customer. At times, it reads like a text book. There are references to all those biz-school management concepts most of us have forgotten! (Don't worry...It's not too heavy.) The many "customer focused" success vignettes kept the book from bogging down while giving the appropriate dose of scholarly information. This best practice methodology drives home the whole principle of customer-centered reengineering. If you care at all about your customers, get this book and share it with your staff. There's a good diagnostic questionnaire included that could be a real eye-opener for senior management!

                  Book Description

This book evaluates the success of the modern agricultural revolution, which has transformed British farming since the abandonment of the free trade in 1931. The impetus for increased food production was provided first through British government intervention and later by European policies of the CAP. Scientific and technological innovations that made farming the economic success that it is, have also brought about the scourge of overproduction, environmental degradation and over capacity amongst the farming fraternity. John Martin provides an informative account of British Agriculture.

                    Book Description

Biology was forged into a single, coherent science only within living memory. In this volume the thinkers responsible for the "modern synthesis" of evolutionary biology and genetics come together to analyze that remarkable event. In a new Preface, Ernst Mayr calls attention to the fact that scientists in different biological disciplines varied considerably in their degree of acceptance of Darwin's theories. Mayr shows us that these differences were played out in four separate periods: 1859 to 1899, 1900 to 1915, 1916 to 1936, and 1937 to 1947. He thus enables us to understand fully why the synthesis was necessary and why Darwin's original theory--that evolutionary change is due to the combination of variation and selection--is as solid at the end of the twentieth century as it was in 1859.

Every time I have the chance to travel to London, I try to visit the Natural History Museum, and one of the main reasons is, precisely, the Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition. Each of the annual portfolios is a faithful account of this wonderful display. Pictures, selected among 20,000, are breathtaking not just for the sheer beauty of the Nature they represent, but for the composition work carried out by the photographers. A must if you love either Nature or Photography, it will make you love both if you don't.

For more than half a century, Don Zimmer, baseball's beloved gerbil, has been the Zelig of the national pastime, the character in the corner of so many interesting pictures. He may have been only--as he likes to remind us throughout Zim: A Baseball Life--a .235 hitter, but he was a .235 hitter who played with Jackie Robinson on the only Brooklyn team to win a World Series. A year later, he was there, on the bench, when Don Larsen threw his perfect game. More than just an original Met, Zim was the first player ever photographed in a Mets uniform. As the Red Sox third-base coach in 1975, it was Zim who waved Carlton Fisk home in the bottom of the 12th to end the greatest World Series game ever played. Three years later, it was Zim, now the Sox manager, who watched in despair as Yankee shortstop Bucky Dent sealed one of the greatest late-season collapses in the annals of the game when Dent's pennant-winning homer settled into the net atop the Green Monster. Of course, it was Zim who led the Cubs, of all teams, to a rare postseason appearance, and, approaching 70 at the turn of the millennium, it was Zim who added four championship rings to his collection as Joe Torre's bench coach in the Bronx.

Bridging the gap between the game's early years of integration and the advent of the $200-million-plus contract, Zim hasn't just witnessed the history of the second half of 20th-century baseball, he's embodied it, and he remembers it with a genial charm and disarming honesty that turns Zim into one of the more spirited and beguiling baseball memoirs to step up in some time. "I've had a hell of a life," he admits with an amazed cheerfulness that's evident on every page. --Jeff Silverman

                      Book Description

In Zim, one of baseball's most eccentric characters and storytellers chronicles his life in the sport, from playing high school ball in Cincinnati to his current role as bench coach for the New York Yankees. Don Zimmer's career has crossed paths with the game's most memorable people and events, and Zim includes them all, from Babe Ruth, who lauded Zim's team a year before he died, to the Brooklyn Dodgers, who drafted him as a potential heir to shortstop Pee Wee Reese, to Casey Stengel, who Zimmer played for as one of the original New York Mets. Accounts of his tragedies — two life-threatening beanings — and triumphs — managing the San Diego Padres, Boston Red Sox, Texas Rangers, and Chicago Cubs — give a panoramic history of both the man and the sport.

                      5 out of 5 stars A Delightful Read!.......2007-09-19

One of the greatest characters of the game! Don Zimmer brings six decades of baseball to life in these pages. It's funny, serious, interesting, and unselfish. We all know that he's pretty much done it all in baseball, but this book will show you how. You'll meet lots of baseball people, and go behind the scenes to see what fans usually don't. One of the best autobiographies I've ever read. I can't wait to read The Zen of Zim now!

5 out of 5 stars I would rate this ten stars if I could.......2007-09-10

Remember how in "Forrest Gump" any major event in history Forrest was always there in the back ground? Don Zimmer is the "forrest Gump" of baseball.Any major happening in the game and Zim was there. He spins a tale here that will keep you interested from page one to the very end. He has probably forgotten more about the game than most will ever know. This book has some great stories and some very funny ones. I promise you will enjoy this.

You just have to love this guy. Too bad he left the Yankees and the game. He had a good career in baseball being in the company of the great ones in the game. This book is full of great anecdotes. Great cover. He can say just as much with his face as with his words so you still have to read the book. It is toughly enjoyable.

With baseball season on the way, I recently went through a period where I read a bunch of baseball biographies that a friend gave me. This was one of the best of the bunch. Don Zimmer gives an honest portrayal of his career in the game, leaving out nothing, even if it reflects less than shiningly on himself. His stories are well told, to the point, and honest. What else is there? I'd recommend this one as a summer read.

5 out of 5 stars Last Of The Breed.......2004-06-24

Geez, what a great, great book. What a great story and what a great life. Don Zimmer is the last of the best generation of ball players, the ones who played because they loved the game and focused on it all the time. It is a major loss that he's still not on a bench somewhere imparting his wisdom. This is by far my favorite baseball book and made me feel young again. I mean, who doesn't love the Zim? One thing though, while reading it. Major League Baseball should give the wives a pension too for all the support they give their husbands over the years. Just buy the book, I promise you, you won't be sorry.

The book is a very quick read. If your looking to just pass the time away I would definetly read this book. If your interested in learning something and taking it to the workplace I would choose another book. When I read a book I like to transfer the learning from the book to the workplace and with this book when I was finished I was unable to transfer my learning. Most of the skills I read about were common sense. I was hoping for something a little more "meaty".

4 out of 5 stars Bottom-line should and should not.......1999-11-17

I just happened to work for a company one day and noticed this book while sitting at the reception desk. I browsed through the first few pages and before I realized, I was more than 1/2 way through it. 'Telephone Skills...' describes typical senarios that could occur and unfortunately do from time to time. It's filled with realistic situations and gives positive, and at times, humorous solutions. I think 'Telephone Skills...' is necessary in any environment- professional/social/and casual. I will recommend my 3 nieces (14,13 & 7 -ages) read this. Ask any parent with children- the phone rings, they run to answer it. I think this book is so informally written that even a child can read and understand it's meaning of being "good natured" polite even when it's someelse fault. On the other hand, it's packed with common sense techniques that make you wonder, why businesses are requesting seminars. Go figure! Now go on- buy it!

5 out of 5 stars Great refresher for "experts"; great teaching for novices.......1999-06-29

I found this book to be a great refresher tool for the "expert" in any company as well as a great teaching tool for the entry level business person. Easy reading and comprehension. Fifty minutes packed with power!

                          Book Description

Three Faces of Beauty offers a unique approach to understanding globalization and cultural change based on a comparative, ethnographic study of a nearly universal institution: the beauty salon. Susan Ossman traces the images and words of the beauty industry as they developed historically between Paris, Cairo, and Casablanca and then vividly demonstrates how such images are embodied today in salons located in each city.
By examining how images from fashion magazines, film, and advertising are enacted in beauty salons, Ossman demonstrates how embodiment is able to display and rework certain hierarchies. While offering the possibility of freedom from the tethers of status, nation, religion, and nature, beauty is created by these very categories and values, Ossman shows. Drawing on hundreds of interviews, she documents the various rituals of welcome, choice-making, pricing practices, and spatial arrangements in multiple salons . She also reveals ways in which patrons in all three cities imagine and co-opt looks they believe are fashionable in the other cities. By observing salons as scenes of instruction, Ossman reveals that beautiful bodies evolve within the intertwining contexts of media, modernity, location, time, postcolonialism, and male expectation.
Three Faces of Beauty will interest anthropologists as well as scholars of globalization, media and communication, postcolonialism, and women’s studies.

"Imagine you are getting a haircut. You hold a picture up beside your face, telling the beautician to cut a bit more here or feather the bangs, as in the photograph. In one salon you hear the voices of several women telling you that you really ought not to have your hair cut as short as the model in the picture" visiting Associate Professor in the Center for Contemporary Arab Studies Susan Ossman challenges readers in Three Faces of Beauty (Duke University Press, March 2002). In another salon, a beautician may strive to reproduce the pictured hairstyle as faithfully as possible; in another, you are the focus and asked to "please put away that awful photograph - would you not rather simply look like the real you?"

In her latest book, Ossman explores and compares the atmosphere, discourse and activity in a variety of beauty salons in three cities, which the publisher describes as "a unique approach to understanding globalization and cultural change based on a comparative, ethnographic study of a nearly universal institution: the beauty salon." She conceives of herself a "butterfly hunter" tracking elusive and fleeting images of beauty from Paris and Cairo with their "long histories as hubs of commerce, fashion, and scholarship" to Casablanca on the "outskirts of fashion," seeking to capture these images as representations of globalization and modernization.

Drawing on hundreds of interviews conducted between 1993 and 1996, she treats beauty salons as public fora and as centers of empowerment for women that challenge tradition and mediate global trends into local practices. Choosing three cities outside the United States for her research, Ossman explores international perspectives on globalization as distinct from Americanization.

The return of beauty salons to Afghanistan, where they were banned under the Taliban, makes Ossman's new book especially timely. As images of Muslim women receive increased public attention around the world, Ossman's research uncovers practices that may seem exotic in the West, such as the publication of fashion magazines for veiled women.

Calling Three Faces of Beauty "a delightful and insightful read," past President of the American Historical Association Natalie Zemon Davis of Princeton University finds that "Susan Ossman lets us hear women's hopes for beauty and difference - out of or under the head shawl."

                            Book Description

This book examines fashion from the role of the supermodel in the beauty business to the significance of cosmetics, perfumes and male fashions. Clearly written and accessible it argues that it is wrong to see fashion as the expression of haute couture. Instead what is judged to be fahionable emerges from a number of different sources in society. It will be required reading for students of culture and society.

                            Book Description

From the runways of Paris to the Broadway stage, from i Rising Sun /i to the casting controversies over i Miss Saigon, /i from high fashion advertising to a local demonstration at the Claremont Colleges in California, b /b b i About Face /i /b examines representations of Asia and their reverberations in both Asia and Asian American lives. br br Based on Dorinne Kondo's fieldwork, this innovative book brings together essays, vignettes, and an interview with playwright David Henry Hwang in an illuminating discussion of how the Asian identity is used and misused in popular culture. Examining Japanese avant-garde high fashion and Asian American theater, Kindo shows us how cultural perceptions are expressed and overturned in performance--whether in the seductive spectacle of a Comme des Garcons fashion show, where striking originality has shattered the stereotype of the Japanese as imitators and technicians, of the gender-bending of i M. Butterfly /i , which calls into question the male dominance and heterosexism of Oriental culture. br br Demonstrating how issues of race, gender, nationality, and sexuality are articulated in the realm of popular culture, Kondo asks us to reappraise our assumptions of what Orientalism means in the world. Both theoretically and politically compelling, b /b b i About Face /i /b offers a penetrating look at how old images or Orientalism are being contested and reshaped by a dynamic new vision of cultural identity.

I enjoyed reading this book. I like chapter about Japanese fashion. Also, introduction is very interesting, as this introduces so many important concepts. For those who study Japanese culture (and Asian American cultures), this book is highly recommended.

                            3 out of 5 stars About Face.......2000-03-24

Very interesting but difficult to read. About Face deals with the way race is performed in high fashion and theater. It centers on the lack of representation of Asain Americans in these areas. Her use of vocabulary and writing style do not make the book accessible to many people, which is unfortunate.
