5 out of 5 stars I knew Frank Bourgin . . ........2005-01-04

Frank discovered that the original founding fathers had a clear vision of what they wanted for our new nation (strong central administration for money, roads, canals, trade, banking, etc.) and discussed it freely (many of their letters still exist) but had to make public announcements in support of states' rights. (The states still held all the power and wealth.) Decades later, when Andrew Jackson became President on a platform of individual strength and frontier character, the historians at that time rewrote history to support Jackson's ideal of a weak central government. That error remained until Frank chose during WWII to explore "early planning in the U.S." for his Ph.D thesis topic. His radical discovery was dismissed and not even completely read by a strong member of his review committee, and then not passed on to the two other members. He was turned down for his Ph.D. by a single man.
Decades later, when Reagan cloaked himself in the "founding fathers' belief in laissez-faire government" he was incensed enough to dig out his work. Constantly struggling to have his work recognized (flying in the face of what everyone knew to be correct) he learned the youngest member of his review committee was still alive, and that he'd never seen the work. He also found solace in a single chapter in a book written by Arthur Schlesinger, Jr. that corroborated his discovery. Arthur recognized that Frank had actually been the first person to unearth the correct version of history, and took the U of Chicago to task to reverse their earlier decision. Reportedly, this is the first time in history that anyone has received a Ph.D using their original thesis after having been declined. This book is his thesis, documenting that "the history of laissez-faire government in early America" is a myth.

5 out of 5 stars Myth Shattering.......2002-12-08

Frank Bougin's " The Great Challenge" is truly a myth shattering book. Bougin documents the active role forseen for the national government not just by it's major proponent Alexander Hamilton, but by Thomas Jefferson, and his Treasury Secratary Albert Gallatin. Jefferson's support for a national program for roads and a national transportation system are amply documented. Also Bougin digs up Jefferson's long lost plans for a national university and federal support for education. He shows how Gallatin and Jefferson paid down the national debt and recommended to Congress a plan to apply the surplus revenues to education, roads, and canals. Bougin also reviews the forward thinking plans of Albert Gallatin and John Q. Adams in expanding the role of the federal government. Overall a great buy.

          Book Description

The aim of this dissertation research is to develop an understanding of how components of the organizational structure, leadership structures at the top level and resource allocation decisions may affect corporate reputation as defined by the reputation quotient(RQ),and which aspects of running a company top management should keep an eye on in order to maximize the reputation of their company?

Based on a literature review on the topic of corporate reputation and governance, which comprises the first part of the dissertation, a positivistic, deductive approach was chosen and a self-administered questionnaire has been developed that was sent out to the CEOs of the 60 companies currently covered in the 2002 RQ-rankings. The detailed discussion of the research method can be found in the third chapter.

Due to a low response rate, the original research approach had to be adapted, in that - where available - the information requested in the questionnaire was filled by the author with publicly-available data from various sources, including the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), brokerage reports, company web sites and third-party information providers, aggregating information from these sources. Because the data points obtained this way, in all cases are based on official company disclosures (i.e. SEC-filings,press releases, published web sites), for which the companies are held legally liable, it is assumed that the quality of the data points obtained this way is just as accurate as from having received it as part of the filled-out questionnaires. This for one, because of the legal implications mentioned above and for the other because the answers to the questionnaire would have been based on the same internal data used to provide information to the Securities and Exchange Commission and general public.

This adaptation of approach narrowed down the original sample size of 60 to 32 companies, because for 28 companies not sufficient public information was available and/ or the companies were not listed in both the 2001 and 2002 RQ-rankings. A second effect is that fewer of the originally intended aspects, especially relating to leadership, could be investigated, as no reliable public information was available. Nevertheless, the sample size was sufficient to draw statistically valid conclusions.

                  Book Description

The HIV epidemic has spawned a scientific effort unprecedented in the history of infectious disease research. This effort has merged aspects of clinical research, basic molecular biology, immunology, cell biology, epidemiology, and mathematical biology in ways that have not been seen before. In The Evolution of HIV Keith A. Crandall brings together researchers from these disciplines to present perspectives on both the molecular biology and molecular evolution of HIV.

The book is organized into three sections: "Introduction to HIV" explores the fundamentals of the virus's molecular biology and its global diversity. "Molecular Methods for Studying HIV Diversity" looks at such topics as HIV phylogenetics, modeling the molecular evolution of HIV sequences, the use of phylogenetic inference to test an HIV transmission hypothesis, and coalescent approaches to HIV population genetics. The third section,"Case Studies of HIV Evolution" examines the levels of diversity within and among host individuals, the phylogenetics of known transmission histories, and HIV evolution and disease progression via longitudinal studies.

The book will be of interest to researchers and clinicians working on HIV, as well as scientists studying molecular evolution, population genetics, and evolutionary biology. Book Description

Advances in molecular biology have led to huge increases in determining the phylogenetic history of viruses. This book is one of the first solely devoted to the origins and evolution of viruses, and of the ways in which they interact with their cellular hosts and vectors. Intitial chapters cover impacts of viruses and their control. Further chapters detail genetic variation of viruses and the molecular basis of interrelation at the population level and the molecular basis and evolution of this relationship. Seventeen chapters follow on genetic origins, sources of variation, population genetics, and interactions with hosts. Practical virologists will find the chapters on phylogenetic analysis techniques very useful. The highly adaptive nature of viruses will be of particular interest to evolutionists.

                                4 out of 5 stars good book.......2005-04-09

This is a very good book for those who do not know anything about taxidermy and would like to begin taxidermy either as a hobby or as another means of income. This book is full of step by step procedures, recommendations, precautions and clear photographs. What i do not like in this book is that it does not give you the formulae for solutions for cleaning, degreasing or preserving the bird skin but just the name of the product ex True-tan (CT80), and you will have to buy them from WASCO. But still I recommend this book.

1 out of 5 stars Who are these reviewers.......2007-04-11

This man's idea of lake trout fishing is to troll with 140 lb test steel line, not much fun and not very informative. This is an obsolete book about obsolete equipment. I was looking for a book that would give me some idea how to fish the spring turnover and talk about flourocarbon, super braid etc. There is no mention of dive boards or modern equipment.

                                5 out of 5 stars A Great Book.......2004-01-28

This is simply the most comprehensive book on lake trout written. The authors approach the topic from a scientific view. However the practical points (i.e., tackle) about catching the fish along with a entertaining sidelights (epic battles by record-holders) make this book a "must read" for serious fisherman. I feel that something more could have been written about the "Niagara Bar", the Great Lakes and some other Canadian Lakes (i.e. Reindeer Lake)as lake trout fisheries but this does little if anything to detract from what has been presented.

5 out of 5 stars The definitive book on lake trout fishing.......2003-07-06

A "must own" volume for anyone who pursues - or has an interest in - lake trout (which Shickler and Eveland term "North America's Greatest Gamefish").
Chapters trace the history of trout and trout fishing. Methodology, tackle, and locations are covered. Perhaps the most enjoyable aspect of the book is the authors' style of interweaving tales of trout fishing and the great outdoors. Merely reading the account of Lloyd Bull's record 72 pound moster will have you booking your next trip!
Reading LAKE TROUT is like taking a mini fly-in trip for yourself: You'll become absorbed in the material, insulated from your everyday world, and yearning to head out and wet a line...

                                Book Description

his delightful mixture of anecdote and illustration that serves up over 1,000 ingenious time- and money-saving tips presented in a handy day-by-day almanac Ben Franklin's down-to-earth philosophy is as timeless today as it was when he penned his first almanac in 1746. With his curious mind, good-hearted spirit, and natural wit, he amused and edified the public with his countless inventions and sensible advice. Now Yankee magazine, publishers of the ever-popular Old Farmer's Almanac, have come up with a perfect book that illustrates how Franklin's frugal, ingenious ideas still apply to life today. Each page is designed to give a daily record of historical facts, household tips (how to clean your windows most efficiently, how to wash sneakers, how to clean rust from a bicycle chain), delicious seasonal recipes, gardening advice, kitchen hints, amusing folklore and quotations, and, of course, Franklin's incomparable words. Ben Franklin's Almanac of Wit, Wisdom, and Practical Advice is a wonderfully entertaining collection that gives the reader Franklin's blueprint for life and the tools to build it.

This Book is great to read for anyone with an inspired mind, I love the fact that you can read one page, full of facts each day of the year. Highly recomended.

5 out of 5 stars Every day in every way we are getting a little bit better .......2006-02-13

Ben Franklin exemplifies one kind of American spirit. The historian Daniel Boorstin said that the greatness of America was in the small improvements it continually provided to everyday life, the spirit of invention. Ben Franklin built a lot of different kinds of better mousetraps, including bifocals, the postal service, and a whole way of thinking about improving the self day - by- day.
This Almanac is compiled in his spirit and contains many examples of his wisdom. It also is chocked full with practical advice for homemakers, and home- improvers.
Old Ben also had a sense of humor on occasion with his wisdom. "Fish and visitors smell after three days he told us" And when were in trouble we can always think of Ben's advice "Any port in a storm"
Some of the stuff here may seem corny , trite , boring . But different strokes for different folks as they say , and there is enough here for 'everyman' to get a little advice and a little
                                enjoyment of.
Happy Sunday, Monday ,Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday , Saturday.

5 out of 5 stars Informative, useful, and fun.......2005-04-03

I'm surprised that no one has reviewed this book, since it's very useful and entertaining, easy to read, and inexpensive.

There's one page for each day of the year. On one side of each page are facts about that day (famous birthdays, events). At the top of the page is a quote from Benjamin Franklin on some principle (saving money, etc.) with some illustrative biographical information from Franklin's or somebody else's life. At the bottom is practical advice for the home and garden, from cooling the house to storing cheese (wrap in wax paper, not celophane, because the live cultures need to breath). It usually takes only a couple of minutes to read a page.

I've had the book on my kitchen table or in other place that you regularly visit for a few minutes every day. It's a well-edited and well-designed book and reasonably priced. I'm planning on giving copies as gifts because it's cheap and I can't imagine anybody not enjoying some aspect of it, either from the household hints, the principles, or the daily facts.

                                  Book Description

Stephen Gan, the mastermind behind Visionaire, the most exclusive fashion and art magazine in the world, welcomes in the new millennium with "Visionaire's Fashion 2001." This sleek volume (7 x 16") dares to display the unique thinking of fashion's revolutionary designers.
"In fashion," Gan explains, "the term 'avant-garde' is often used euphemistically, a nicer way of saying 'weird,' or commercially unviable, or just plain difficult." From a quick glimpse at these designs (many of which were created exclusively for this book, "as an exercise in self reflection," Gan says), it is evident that the avant-garde is not for everyone. Rather, it is for those whose style carries them beyond the boundaries defining "fashion." Unrestricted by contemporary codes for clothing like "comfort," "casual," and, let's face it, "clich," the designers featured here are like fresh air when compared to the often stale, recycled lines of more popular designers.

With Stella McCartney at Chloe and Nicolas Ghesquiere at Balenciaga, the fringe is moving towards the center. And, though some of the designers-Alain Tondowski, Stephen Jones, Christian Laboutin-are well known, the majority are not. "Well, that's the point," says Gan. "In the grand scheme of fashion, many of these designers register only as small blips...but if you measure these designers not in terms of sales but in terms of their ideas and the passion and dedication they bring to what they do, their impact is incalculable. Their work is at once inspired and inspiring."

With photographs by Mario Testino, Inez van Lamsweerde, Vinoodh Matalin, Sean Ellis, and Marcus Mann, this tribute to originality profiles 65 cutting-edge designers from around the globe. From the drama of the clothes to the captivating photos, "Visionaire's Fashion 2001" is for those in the know-and if you don't know, now you do.

Once again, another Stephen Gan masterpiece! Visionnaire 2000 works as a wondrous visual delight for anyone who adores the fashion world, art, and design in general. The format (text and visuals) is neat and appealing, and the photography memorable. As a sort of modern-day encyclopedia of fashion's most eccentric and notable renegades, this colorful documentary is both inspirational and entertaining.
