      Book Description

With much of the "Asian Miracle" destroyed and much of the Western world's awe for Asian ways of management dissipated, organizations there are changing with such speed that most of our knowledge about them is quickly outdated. Richter takes stock of East Asian management practices, as they are perceived so far, and he discusses the strategies that others propose to help Asian management redesign itself for the future--including a long-term agenda for change based on the cultural heritage of Confucianism. He analyzes the cultural underpinnings of Asian management practices, evaluates the influence of the Asian economic crisis on them, and discusses their potential for guiding Asian firms to a sustainable competitive advantage. He then provides examples of how Asian firms shape up their organizations and describes a short-term agenda to fix the weaknesses in Asian management, at least temporarily. Throughout, Richter avoids talk about "strategic management" as merely a theory: he adopts a broader definition that includes a value system to guide East Asian firms as they re-emerge and redevelop. The result is a challenging, intensely pragmatic analysis for decision-makers at all levels, in all countries and cultures, and it is a new stone in the foundation of academic research and thought. Richter opens with a discussion of the legacy of Confucianism and its impact on Asian management practices. He then proposes three intrinsic characteristics of Asian management: networks, trust, and collectivism. He gives a history of the Asian economic crisis, highlighting the failures of Asia's economic development and the flaws that appeared in its management practices. The third section of the book evaluates management practices that have emerged since then, and how they are perceived so far. Then, in the concluding section, he presents a new perspective on Asian management, short-term goals (fixing current management weaknesses), and long-term goals (incorporating its long abiding strengths). Throughout, Richter draws on the management theory enunciated by Hofstede and includes examples and case studies of recent developments across the region, and he also includes his own theories as well as those of others. Mr. Richter's book will be a welcome addition to the literature on business and the culture of Asia.

This is one of the most insightful book on Asian business on the market today. While the book is mainly aimed at those interested in Asian business, I believe that anyone that has a thirst for knowledge on management theories should pick up this book.

4 out of 5 stars Useful General Help.......2004-02-10

This book will be helpful to people in various categories. Firstly, those wondering whether a career as sceintific researcher would suit them and what it would entail, secondly those charged with providing suitable career advice and, thirdly, existing researchers needing assistance or reassurance in connection with their work and prospects. As a result, I can see this book in many libraries, including high school and university libraries.

On the other hand, given the rapid nature of change in funding (and this book considers only the USA) and research practices, it would be wrong to imagine that it would be able to provide up to date and accurate information on every issue with which a researcher is likely to be concerned. It should be seen as a general guide rather than a specific one. It will be useful for my students here in Thailand since the career of researcher is not so well documented or even developed here and many aspire to study and work in western countries without much idea of what it would entail.

          5 out of 5 stars Excerpt of a review.......2004-01-24

"[T]he book takes the guesswork out of an academic life and environment. ... I highly recommend this book to every graduate student so that they are prepared for the academic calling and can make the most of it. I would further recommend this book to all established academicians so that they could have a better perspective on a graduate student, fellow, and a starting assistant professor and encourage them to become good members of the academic society. The book is priced such that a graduate student can afford to buy one, or perhaps their mentor may be generous enough to gift one."

          Kailash Gupta, NIAID, NIH

2 out of 5 stars Little help here.......2004-01-20

Well, what can I say. It took a lot of deliberation before I decided to buy this book. I did get a recommendation from a colleague, but after reading some of the reviews, I was not so sure. Much of what the authors say is not just common sense, but almost trivial. I think the topic is also too general, trying to cover everything from a postdoc looking for a job, to an associate professor trying to get promoted to a full professor level.

What was particularly disappointing was the extremely abbreviated section on the process of getting a job. Granted that every university varies, but negotiating a position with good (access to) resources and support, good students and enough time to do research is probably the most critical stage of the whole process. Everything else is a direct result of this process. Yet disproportionately little time is spent on this subject. It is as if the authors assume everyone gets a job in one of the top ten universities, but at the same time they are still too confused about how to publish a paper, write/get a grant or interact with colleagues (junior and senior).

Focusing on NIH R01 as the only source of funding (granted this is intended for biomedical researchers), is also misguided. There are alternatives that researchers can explore, but many of them do not give as generous indirect costs as NIH or simply are smaller than your average NIH grant. So from your institution's point of view these grants do not really help you to get tenure, so maybe that is why the authors left them out.

Over all, this book really is not that helpful unless you are a complete beginner in this game. And then it is probably too early for you to worry about getting your R01 in Research Utopia U. I can think of better things to spend $40 on.

5 out of 5 stars Will be useful for years to come.......2003-10-19

Finally, a book full of advice on the art of being an academic scientist! As a postdoc, I have already benefited from many of the sections, including the advice on grant writing, giving talks, and writing manuscripts. Also, the section on mentoring has helped me to be more efficient in directing the undergraduates working with me. I am sure I will consult this book many times in the future as I begin my job search and start my own lab. The book was fun to read as well as very practical. Definitely recommended.

1 out of 5 stars Will prove ineffective.......2003-10-04

I was generous with just one star. In the real world of the stressful biomedical grant mill (Emory University being one such mill), this book will prove profoundly ineffective. And for several reasons. First, it is poorly conceived and written. Second, to my knowledge, Eckert has never been funded for a biomedical grant (in other words, her expertise is wishful thinking). Presently, she holds a staff position at the Emory School of Nursing.

Among the first acts of the Pilgrims at Plymouth Bay Colony was to set a bounty on wolves: first a penny for a pelt, then four bushels of corn for a mere scrap of fur. Succeeding generations of Americans followed the Pilgrims' lead, until by the middle of the 20th century the wolf was driven to the verge of extinction nearly everywhere outside Alaska. Rick McIntyre, a seasonal park ranger at Denali, Yellowstone, and other wolf-populated areas, has spent years documenting the behavior of living wolves. Here he turns to the sad task of documenting America's destruction of the wolf, a legacy that we may finally be able to undo with the reintroduction of Canis lupus to the wild.

McIntyre chronicles the history of persecution of our nation's magnificent predator, the wolf. HOW could people have these views of such incredibly intelligent and social animals which STILL persist today?

Education is so necessary and SO MISSING in our schools about how the federal government has aided and abetted in the extermination of our nation's precious assets, it's native predators.

              A Must Read!

5 out of 5 stars wolves and people.......2000-04-05

An extremely comprehensive history of American sentiment about the wolf. This book does an excellent job of covering the various aspects of changing legislation on the wolf at both the federal and state levels. It also thoroughly cites chants, essays, poems and treatises that map the varying American views about the wolf. Do not look for detailed biological information in this book, however, this is a study on human attitudes as they have affected the wolf. A good read for anyone interested in conservation, or the plight of the wolf in specific.

This book could best be titled Basic M16A2 Marksmanship. The information is great for someone with very basic marksmanship knowledge. Full operation procedures for the M16 are included which makes this book of little use for users of other firearms. The appendix showing how to document shooting tests is helpfull and provides good ideas to build you own.

So it you are just starting out and have an M16/AR15, this book if for you. However if you use hunting rifles and are not new to shooting positions and marskmanship, this book is not what you are looking for.

It is a guide for commanders, leaders, and instructors to develop training programs, plans and lessons that meet the objectives/intent of the United States Army rifle marksmanship program.

This manual is organized to lead the trainer through the material needed to conduct training. Preliminary subjects include discussions on mechanical training, the weapons' capabilities, and the principles and fundamentals of marksmanship. Live-fire applications are scheduled after the soldier has demonstrated preliminary skills.

The procedures and methods used in the Army rifle marksmanship program are based on the concept that soldiers must be skilled marksmen who can effectively apply their firing skills in combat.

3 out of 5 stars Don't laugh, this one has it all........2003-06-02

Everyone jokes that Army manuals are written for dummies. Well guess what, when it comes to marksmanship and the M16 most folks are dummies.

If you own an AR15 this is the one "must have" on the list, especially if you never received any serious (Army Infantry, Marine 03) military training on the weapon.

It's got it all, ballistics, operation, function, maintenance, and characteristics. It covers all phases of marksmanship, basic, advanced, and field. If you absorb this knowledge combined with that in the -10 Operators Manual (available online) you will have a solid skill set and be a force of reckoning when using your AR.

Don't bother ordering other manuals that so often turn out to be direct photo copies of the one true book, order the real deal Hollyfield.

I've only rated this one 3 stars because I know there are better AR manuals out there but for sheer ease of reading (lots of pictures and small words) this book has the others beat. Remember, most grunts coming into the Army these days have NO experience with firearms let alone select fire rifles. If that describes you then this is your book.

                                5 out of 5 stars Boring Cover.....Fantastic Book.......2007-05-26

I am not sure why English language teaching books have a penchant for boring cover designs, but sometimes they really live up to the old adage of never judging books by their covers. Kathleen Graves' "Designing Language Courses" is a case in point.

The book has a clear organisation that is easily followed and takes you through a process that is clear and succinct. With a description of the framework Graves uses at the start, the rest of the book forms a logical and consistent whole with it. The chapters take you right through the whole gamut of course design from getting to your beliefs about teaching right up to evaluation. Each section is detailed, though not so much that it overloads you with it.

Any unusual or specific terminology is explained throughout and there is a lot of reference to other authors and research. The book has a thorough approach to the subject, giving recommended reading suggestions at the end of each chapter.

A real positive in this book is the use of sections Graves calls "Teachers' Voices". These are little sections within the chapters, (well, some are not so "little"), where working teachers give their experiences and thoughts on the aspect of course design at hand. These teachers come from a variety of professional and working backgrounds, and they provide rich input and insight. I found these to be especially valuable.

One previous reviewer said they found it an unfriendly book for the user, and I have to disagree. I thought it was an immensely useful and easy to access book. I loved it and found it very interesting and very useful. I would even go so far as to say that anyone looking at course design should look at this book. Graves has done an excellent job.

I bought this book as a requirement for my Masters Program...TESL (Teaching English as a Second Language) and I was expecting to find another uninteresting textbook. The book was great! This book is truly designed with the teacher in mind. The information was clear, easy to understand, and helpful. The book stresses the importance of how teachers need to take a students' needs into consideration in order to get the most out of your curriculum! If you are a student in a teacher preparation program...don't throw, give, or sell this book. It would be wise to keep this in your reference library!

This book is so unfriendly my professor suggested we sell the book back on the first day of class because she said we'd learn more from using journal articles as opposed to fighting through this book. It is very dry, dull, and set up in a confusing way.

This book by Kathleen Graves is one of the best for teachers of foreign languages that I have ever read. This gives a wonderful guideline for each step of the curriculum creation process. You'll get lots of advice on how to assess you students' needs, how to focus on their needs, and how to adapt textbooks to serve their learning need more effectively. I recommend this for every beginning language teacher if you haven't read this in your training already. I didn't read this until I was eight years into my career, and I wish I had been able to read it earlier.
