Book Description
What's wrong with foreign aid? Many policymakers, aid practitioners, and scholars have called into question its ability to increase economic growth, alleviate poverty, or promote social development. At the macro level, only tenuous links between development aid and improved living conditions have been found. At the micro level, only a few programs outlast donor support and even fewer appear to achieve lasting improvements. The authors of this book argue that much of aid's failure is related to the institutions that structure its delivery. These institutions govern the complex relationships between the main actors in the aid delivery system and often generate a series of perverse incentives that promote inefficient and unsustainable outcomes. In their analysis, the authors apply the theoretical insights of the new institutional economics to several settings. First, they investigate the institutions of Sida, the Swedish aid agency, to analyze how that aid agency's institutions can produce incentives inimical to desired outcomes, contrary to the desires of its own staff. Second, the authors use cases from India, a country with low aid dependence, and Zambia, a country with high aid dependence, to explore how institutions on the ground in recipient countries also mediate the effectiveness of aid. Throughout the book, the authors offer suggestions about how to improve aid's effectiveness. These suggestions include how to structure evaluations in order to improve outcomes, how to employ agency staff to gain from their on-the-ground experience, and how to engage stakeholders as "owners" in the design, resource mobilization, learning, and evaluation processes of development assistance programs.

Book Description
The essays in this book examine the question of whether African development has historically been weighted in favor of the urban areas. The authors worry that the benefits of urban development are being lost in current adjustment approaches. What is necessary is to harness the financial and human resources of the human city as part of a strategy to ensure greater and more widespread economic development.

Book Description
This classic has been throughly revised and expanded to reflect technological advances, but it still emphasizes the fundamentals, with extensive reviews of optical microscopy, video detectors, and display devices. Three completely new chapters deal with solid-state detectors, both video-rate and slow scan, image intensifiction; and the color video signal and color video cameras. Another new chapter treating the practical aspcts of the design and use of video microscope systems is especially notable. This edition fetures over 500 illustrations (including 126 half-tones), a glossary of items, detailed tables of specifications, and a list of manufacturers.
Customer Reviews:
video microscopy review.......2004-05-07
Book was informative for basics and advanced material.
I found it difficult to read; was too much info for a basic microscopy course. I think there should be an easier to read edition that focuses more on microscopy techniques without all the advanced information.
An invaluable reference.......2001-01-09
The author provides a very detailed and extremely well presented guide to all aspects of video microscopy. The subject is presented in such a way as to be of great value to the most advanced reader while not being beyond the grasp of the novice. All relevant background material is supplied, and I have found the book to be an excellent reference for video imaging and image processing in general.
EXCELLENT BOOK!!.......1997-11-06
This book is an excellent update to the first edition. Much progress has been made in Video Microscopy since the first edition in 1986. This book covers the field nicely. It is an excellent guide for the novice and excellent reference for the advanced user. Anyone serious about video microscopy should have a copy of this book on their shelf!

Customer Reviews:
Great globe trotting book.......2007-03-09
I really enjoyed this book, it is filled with a lot of short stories that take place all over the world. As a surfer, many of the places are easy to recognize and the author writes in the fashion that is easy to visualize yourself there. I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it to everyone - surfer and non - surfer.
Not Just for Surfers! .......2006-11-10
Return By Water is an engaging, humourous collection of stories that explore not only the adventures of surfing, but the world of fearless travel. The author has a wonderfully insouciant voice, vividly describing characters and settings that range from the wilds of Ecuador to the more pedestrian ( or so one would think!) Outer Banks of North Carolina.
Some of my personal favorites were 'El Brazo', a lovely tale about a little Ecuadorean boy living on the ranch/'hotel' where the main character stays while checking out the surf scene. He is rewarded with the protagonist's surf board at the conclusion of the story, but not without heretofore unforseen complications. 'Bachong and the Bemo' describes with a wonderfully fresh perspective the thoughts of an American abroad in Java during the events of 9/11.
Overall, these stories flow wonderfully from one to the next, and were a joy to read. I was throughly delighted with the book, and give this collection my highest recommendation. I sense this is the first of many books from this author.
Kimball would go.......2005-10-20
For every Jon Krakauer there should be two Kimball Taylor's.Each story in this book is exceptionally written, but the beauty lies in the tales themselves and the inclusive vibe Taylor extends to bring the reader with him. Krakauer's life-threatening intensity is replaced by honest adventure that anyone can get themselves into. Getting out is another story completely, and Taylor tells it beautifully.
Takes you away.......2005-10-13
This book, and the words written within are unlike any stories you would find in the average surf magazine. Its nice to see an alternative for those who would rather read a great book and not a magazine full of ads.
The author uses a unique and descriptive style to take you into his adventures, as if he was telling you the story over a few beers at a bar, with colorful sarcasm and humour. You feel drawn in and itching to read the next chapter to see what hilarity, mishaps and strange charcacters the author will meet in the next journey.
Highly recomended.

Customer Reviews:
Connections is a great way to get students to write........2001-08-23
This collection of essays with the prereading questions and suggestions for further thought works to get even the most reluctant students to express opinions. The essays are organized around thematic units such as "Roots and Arrivals," "Family," "Ways of Learning," etc. When I have used this text, I have found that students -- even those who hate English -- find themselves discussing and writing about what they have read. The focus on making connections with people from different cultural or experiential backgrounds also helps to prepare students for an increasingly diverse world. The only drawback to the book is the lack of really useful information on writing. However, I find it easier to develop my own guidelines for students; and the thought-provoking essays make up for this lack.

One of the most beloved figures in country music (non-music division), Nudie Cohn was born a million metaphoric miles from the birthplace of the hillbilly sound. His remarkable journey--from tailor's apprentice in his birthplace of Kiev, Russia, to America's undisputed king of Western wear--is lovingly documented in Nudie: The Rodeo Tailor by authors Jamie Lee Nudie (his granddaughter) and Mary Lynn Cabrall. More pictorial celebration than detailed biography, the book wisely lets the photos of his famous friends and his splendid suits tell the story; the accompanying text is light and breezy, providing a mere overview of Cohn's life and travels. An incredible range of actors and musicians appear, usually donning Nudie's one-of-a-kind creations. Supposedly the first tailor to add rhinestones to a Western suit, Nudie was as flamboyant as his gloriously embroidered, superbly studded garments. Like many immigrants to the States, this Russian-born Jew was clearly fascinated by the more mythic aspects of Americana--Hollywood, cowboys, and western music--and eventually became a unique part of Americana himself. --Marc Greilsamer
Book Description
Born in Kiev, Ukraine in 1902, Nudie Cohn built an impeccable reputation as one of the most sought after clothiers in Los Angeles... all on a few sparkly G-strings. Nudie the Rodeo Tailor tells the unbelievable story of Nudie and Bobbie Cohn and the legendary fashion legacy they created. Nudie Cohn's first store (Nudie's for the Ladies, New York City) featured those famous and lavishly ornamented G-strings and stage costumes, and allowed him to build a reputation as a master tailor with a taste for the flashy. After a few years, Nudie turned his attention to making western clothing, and became the first person to incorporate rhinestones into cowboy dress. It was the $10,000 gold suit that Nudie made for Elvis Presley that rocketed Nudie to stardom and cemented his status in fashion history; Nudie would go on to design clothing for Dale Evans and Roy Rogers, Elton John, Gene Autry, John Wayne, John Lennon, Steve McQueen, Johnny Cash, Eric Clapton, and the rock groups America and the Flying Burrito Brothers. Nudie blurred the boundaries of fashion and cast a far-reaching influence over the clothing worn in country music, rock music, movies, and television. Nudie the Rodeo Tailor chronicles the life of the man who epitomizes the American Dream itself, with an amazing selection of photographs of suits, clothing, accessories, and of Nudie himself with the hundreds of clients and friends he made through the years. Nudie the Rodeo Tailor is the most comprehensive and handsome book on Nudie Cohn and his clothing ever created-a long overdue testament to his spirit and talent. Jamie Lee Nudie was born to Barbara Cohn and Sun Studio-sensation Jimmy Wilson in North Hollywood, California. The granddaughter of Nudie and Bobbie grew up in Nudie's Rodeo Tailors, greeting the stars and clientele with the same friendly persona. Jamie is a mother of three children living in the San Fernando Valley, caring for her grandmother Bobbie Nudie and working on many projects pertaining to the Nudie legacy. Mary Lynn Cabrall was born in Castro Valley, California, and has always dreamed of becoming a cowgirl. She learned leather tooling, and her interest in vintage clothing led her to start mimicking Nudie suits. Mary Lynn later acquired a sixty-year-old chain-stitch embroidery machine, and she took up the art of machine embroidery. Today Mary Lynn and Jamie Lee work to re-create the Nudie magic. Leatherwork, silverwork, embroidery, rhinestones, and the best rodeo tailoring money can buy can be still be ordered from Nudie's Rodeo Tailors.
