Review(s) `A much-needed reference on autopoiesis...I enjoyed reading the book as it took me stage by stage through a clear and easy-to-grasp understanding of the concepts and ideas of autopoiesis...on through their applications....an exceptional text.' from the Foreword by Robert L. Flood

praise for john mingers!.......1999-11-06
What a great book! The text is always very concise, readable , without loosing any depth. Systems Theory is a field which interests me; I've reading dozens of books about cybernetics, pragmatics of human communication, Theory of Information, Theory of Communication, Chaos Theory, Autopoiesis, etc. This is probably one of the best. Shame its not available anymore!

Book Description
This atlas represents a first step in comparing the anatomic organization of the brains of the C57BL/6 and the 129/Sv mice, two substrains that are frequently used in studies of the central nervous system. The mouse is rapidly becoming the most commonly used mammalian resource in biomedicine. The need to model human diseases through genetic manipulation in transgenic animals, the existence of a wide array of immunological markers for murine cell surface receptors, and the need to test new drugs has resulted in an increasing demand for inbred rodents. To date, a very large number of genetically manipulated mouse models have been created, that have been derived from over 450 inbred strains. Whereas it is possible to control the expression of specific genes in these animals, relatively scarce information is known on the comparative neuroanatomical characteristics of different strains of mice.
Such information is crucial for the interpretation of scientific data obtained from genetically manipulated animals. Because many such genetically manipulated mice models are used in neuroscience, it is important to document the differences in brain organization existing among different mouse strains.
Representative series of 49 levels for general cytoarchitecture and 6 levels for myeloarchitecture are presented in standard stereotaxic coordinates from the brains of the C57BL/6 and the 129/Sv mice. This permits a comparison of the distribution of the various nuclei, cortical areas and fiber tracts, and an assessment of the variability between the two strains. For each plate, an alphabetical list of structures, with the abbreviations used in the plate and the full anatomical names of the structures is provided. An alphabetical index of structure names for each mouse with relevant atlas pages is included as well as a comparative list of structures in alphabetical order with indication of the pages and levels calculated from the bregma where structures occur. This permits a quick cross-reference of the extent and location of specific brain structures between the two mice.
Matching CD-ROMs, containing all of the plates in Adobe Illustrator 8.0 format, structure lists and comparative index are also provided.
In future this atlas will be enriched with brains of other mouse strains and eventually provide comparative and quantitative, stereologic as well as immunohistochemical data on a series of relevant brain structures.
Customer Reviews:
Very unfriendly and useless software, acceptable book.......2003-06-10
Since I needed a mouse brain atlas for my work I asked around what others recommend. I went out and bought this product with great expectations. The book is OK, but only shows the coronal sections of the brains. The worst part is the totally useless 4 CD ROM. I am quite familiar with computers and programs but I was not able to use it. Looks like one PhD is not enough to use this very unfriendly program....
If you don't register than you are not able to use the help and other feature. But if you have problem with the registration (as I had) than you are stucked.
The bottom line is: very unfriendly and useless program for the mere 160$. Look elsewhere if you need a brain atlas.

"Must" reading for Sierra Nevada bound anglers!.......2000-09-07
The John Muir Trail runs through 210 miles of spectacular Sierra Nevada mountain range scenery. Trout-Fishing The John Muir Trail will enable the angler to plan and preparing for a trip to the John Muir Trail; fish along the trail; as well as assemble terrain appropriate fishing tackle and hiking gear. There are a wealth of hiking tips, a roster of 20 top trout streams; fly fishing recommendations, and more. If you are bound for the Sierra Nevadas and a trip along the John Muir Trail, begin by reading Steve Beck's Trout-Fishing The John Muir Trail!
"Nature...her choicest treasures"-John Muir.......2000-04-11
It is clear in this compact guidebook that Steve Beck appreciates the special beauty of the Sierra, that he is a skilled fly fisherman, and that he has some fascination with John Muir. Almost every page has a fine color photo, and often a Muir quote. The scenery is spectacular, but there is plenty of solidly researched information for both experienced fishermen and hikers planning a trip to this area. I bought the book in preparation for an August vacation and it is hard to choose where to go with a limited amount of time. This book provides enough information for many trips!
Tell a Friend.......2000-04-10
Steve Beck's first book, Yosemite Trout Fishing Guide, was a really fine addition to my library. His latest publication on the beauty that is the John Muir Trail and its fishery is even better. I only wish I could get the book in a hard cover. This book is worth keeping and passing down to loved ones.
GREAT FISHING BOOK.......2000-04-07
Studying Steve Beck's new book is a must for anyone planning to fish in te High Sierra. Not only is his information invaluable,it is also interesting and highly readable. His descriptions are great and the pictures are beautiful. As a fly fisherman, I highly recommend this book.
finally help finding fish.......2000-04-07
I'm delighted someone has finally offered some help finding fish in the high Sierra. I love backpacking and fishing - I can always find a trail, but not always the fish! This book provides detailed information on types of trout, their locations and populations in the many waters surrounding the Muir trail, as well as how to catch them in specific locations. Thanks Mr. Beck!

Thorough and detailed.......2005-09-16
I was in the process of starting a consultancy, and realized that your contract IS your deal. Getting it right it extremely important. Between the book and the disk that comes with it, you are provided with a large set of clauses from which you can choose which ones you want, and basically write your own contract exactly as you want it. It explains contract law and what the clauses mean, but for a really detailed look into contract law, buy a law book on the subject.
This book is very practical, and saved me several hundred dollars in legal fees. My attorney simply reviewed my contract and approved it!
The Contract and Fee-Setting Guide for Consultants&Professio.......2000-05-08
The best guide for all the consultants in the world.
Book Description
This unique book brings you, at last, the easiest, no-risk, step-by-step process for beginning and promoting your own consulting business. This remarkable technique harnesses the full power found in a natural progression: moving from Temp to Contractor to Consultant. Jimmy’s amazing personal experience will empower you to move through all three phases comfortably.
Customer Reviews:
The BEST book I have found concerning Technical Contracting.......2005-01-16
I looked all over the web and in dozens of book stores for a "how to" book concerning technical contracting. Jimmy's book might as well be the only book on this subject. I have recycled every other book I have purchased on this subject.
I am writing this endorsement after purchasing my 5th copy of this book. I can never get my old copies back after loaning them out to other Engineering Contractors.

EASY Money Consulting.......2001-01-23
After reading this book, I promptly tossed a bookshelf full of other so-called "how-to" consulting books in the recycling bin. While the others were difficult to understand and provided sketchy details, Jimmy Moore lays out a simple, easy-to-follow, yet extremely effective methodology that anyone can use to launch or improve a career in temp, contract or consulting. I've been contracting for years and learned many surprisingly easy networking techniques for launching an engineering consulting career. My old resume that barely fit on two pages amazingly was able to fit nicely in the one page "skill-bullet" resume format - with less information yet carrying a bigger, more effective punch for busy recruiters who have little time to weed through a long, wordy resume. I also used Jimmy's step-by-step techniques to compile over 100 contract engineering agencies and their e-mail addresses. Initial results have been fantastic and the job calls should continue for months to come! And I STILL havent put all of Jimmy's techniques into action; including the website I am designing and will link up to potential clients. This book has put new life in my engineering career after hitting the "skids."
Helpful and inspiring!.......2001-01-10
Moore has a distinctive attitude toward consultants--people with a Noble Cause, who bring optimism, enthusiasm, good ideas, and expertise with them wherever they go. Captive Employees can get bogged down by meetings, beaurocracy, trying to fit the corporate mode, and having other powers decide your projects and professional development. After reading this book, I see that consultants can be more in control of all those factors. This book helps to give a framework for thinking about what it means to be a consultant, how to be an effective and successful consultant, pitfalls to avoid, and how to best serve the company you work for. It is full of helpful and practical ideas for setting consulting rates, learning new ideas, networking, and how to keep current.
I especially recommend this book to people who are new to contract work, or considering contract work!
One of the few books I have read cover to cover.......2000-11-30
This informative, highly motivational book accomplishes just what the book title says. The author speaks candidly about his experiences and has developed a step-by-step procedure that reduces risk and can help virtually anyone to get ahead, even if they are already happily employed.

Robin Lawton is the missing link to Deming's Quality Story!.......2002-02-16
While Deming concentrated his thinking mostly around re-engineering the processes we use to deliver our products, Lawton starts us out at the beginning of the product story: What are our customer's needs and what outcomes do we want to achieve. He teaches just the right questions to ask in order for us to gain the understanding, if we are even delivering the right product to meet the needs of our customers! His teachings resulted in our ability to develop just the right strategies to set us up for tremendous success in our business. His business insights are not confined to "for profit" companies. Recently, I used his principles to develop a Christian Education Plan for our Church...and guess what? Participation in adult classes doubled within 3 months! Nobody can afford NOT to read his books and attend his workshops.
Critical Gap Has Been Bridged!.......2001-01-16
Robin Lawton has shared with us a missing link! There are books that discuss how to fix problems, books about the "balanced scorecard", and books about meeting customer expectations. However, none of them seemed able to address a critical question: what objective measure will enable us to track our level of success? By answering that question, this book enahnces the value of all other volumes on six sigma, management, and problem solving. Lawton does so by guidng the reader through a straightforward process. By all means, read the other books - but only after you read this one first!
A "Must Read" and "Must Act Upon".......2000-04-09
With the vast array of performance improvement and customer focus books on the market, readers need to be somewhat selective about what they read. This book should definitely be on any manager's list. The tools described in the book apply to any type of organization, public or private, and at any level of the organization. At the Missouri Department of Revenue, we've used Robin Lawton's customer-centered culture approach as a touchstone for many successful Performance Excellence Teams.
The only thing worse for a results-oriented leader than not reading this book would be to read it and not put it into action. Unlike so many performance improvement books, the clear guidance is more than matched by the clarity and simplicity of the steps to implementation.
Rethinking work, quality, and satisfaction........2000-03-31
This is a great thought provoking book. It proposes a paradigm shift in the way we think about work, about how we organize ourselves, and how we can create fans out of customers. It is also a hands on manual with a practical guide to how we can make changes in our organizations and dramatically improve the way we do things. In doing our work, most of us concentrate on the issues that pre-occupy us and the organizations we work for - issues like "How much does it cost us to produce such and such?"; "How well are we organized?"; "Do our processes comply with policy/standards/established procedures, etc.?" This little book suggests that we think about our work as a matter of producing discreet products. For those who are in service and information organizations, this is not an easy concept to grasp initially. It requires a paradigm shift in thinking. However, once you see the work you do in these terms, you can then (1)identify the "customers" of such products and (2)begin applying product redesign concepts to create customer satisfaction. For anyone who is ready for a leadership challenge in their organization, this book is required reading.
Get Connected with your Customers -- Finally!.......2000-03-02
These are exciting times, and these are trying times. We want to satisfy our customers! ...But, first, we need to understand their wants and needs. We as managers sometimes need to look to experts to aid us in leading our organizations toward improved customer satisfaction, and here is where Robin Lawton can help. His innovative methods outlined in the book, "Creating a Customer-Centered Culture", can help your organizations. How? Learn how to connect your PRODUCTS (What are your products, really?) with the CUSTOMER (Do you really know who your customers are, and what outcomes they want?).

Book Description
Over the years, the term private sector development has been misunderstood and misconstrued-variously vilified and sanctified. During the decade of the 1990s, the role of the private sector in economic development received increasing attention, with controversy surrounding such issues as privatization and corporate scandals. The Private Sector in Development: Entrepreneurship, Regulation, and Competitive Disciplines provides the first comprehensive treatment of the topic.
Central to the discussion is the design of public policy that promotes an appropriate balance between competition and regulation. This book places special emphasis on the means by which private initiative is channeled into socially useful directions, particularly job creation and basic service delivery for good people. Finally, there is discussion of the implications of private sector involvement for policies of development institutions.
Written principally for policy makers and their advisers, The Private Sector in Development thoroughly explores the challenges inherent in creating public policy that encourages and enhances the development role of the private sector.
If global poverty is to be reduced, the private sector, by almost unanimous assent these days, is crucial. The authors offer a broad-ranging and balanced assessment of how to build workable market mechanisms in developing countries.--John McMillan, Professor of Economics, Stanford University and author of Reinventing the Bazaar: A Natural History of Markets

Book Description
This publication incorporates the papers and proceedings of a conference held in London in July 2002 on enhancing private flows to developing countries. The conference was organized to promote an understanding of the developing country and private sector perspectives in attracting private flows; the impact of international codes and standards in defining the perception of the private sector and practical issues regarding their implementation; and the new regulatory developments which are likely to impact on the availability of private capital flows. Additionally, developing country participation in international economic governance arrangements was considered.
