Book Description
There is a wealth of scholarship on tourism from a variety of different disciplines, but few attempts to synthesize its broad themes into a coherent analytical framework. This book addresses this problem by analyzing tourism in light of contemporary social theory. By focusing on tourism in terms of consumption, commodification, and the political and cultural economy, the relationships between tourism, globalization, people, and place are explored in an empirically grounded but theoretically informed analysis.

Book Description
The study of sport tourism is on the cusp of moving from a descriptive phase of research into an explanatory phase. Consequently, many academics and graduate students are searching for theories upon which to ground their work. This book draws upon theories and concepts from sociology and anthropology (the socio-cultural perspective), sport and tourism studies, and business studies. One of the dangers of a new area of study is that the body of knowledge is built on a range of seemingly unrelated studies. By grounding work in a theoretical perspective, future work can be linked to, and contribute to building a cohesive understanding of various aspects of sport tourism. This book is an edited collection written by some of the top scholars working in a particular domain throughout the world and provides a compendium of theories and concepts that can be used to frame research on various aspects of sport tourism.
It is anticipated this book will be used by graduate courses (post graduate) and as a reference book for scholars in sport and tourism studies.
This volume was previously published as a special issue of the journal Sport in the Global Society.

Book Description
In this volume, the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology provides managers with the practical guidance they need to make decisions about the crucial process of employee selection in today's changing business environment. An outstanding group of contributors--each with direct experience creating effective selection programs for contemporary organizations--makes applicable proven strategies for the design and management of the selection process. They examine selection management in its organizational, social, and legal contexts and help human resource professionals forge links between selection and other critical HR functions such as training, development, recruitment, and resourcing.
Customer Reviews:
A crucial must have for today's HR Practioner.......2002-12-31
An excellent source for every practioner. The authors take you through all the change facing organizations today and the stressors that such change is producing.
From aptitude testing, muilt-step selection procedures, technology and competencies, the authors lay out a clear framework for managing selection in changing organizations.
Whether you are a seasoned HR Practioner or a new hiring manager, I would recommend this book.
A timely topic for HR practitioners........2000-05-15
As stated by series editor Eduardo Salas, "this volume is about the practice of selection strategies in rapidly changing organizations. A timely topic for both practitioners and scientists. Jerard F. Kehoe was able to assemble an excellent group of industrial / organizational psychologists to write about how selection interfaces with individual, social, and organizational factors. The chapters describe how demographic changes, team-membership, cultural differences, legislation, and social policy influence the selection strategy process. The chapters offer many useful and practical insights about the practice of selection strategies in an every-changing organizational world. This volume is invaluable to those concerned with applying selection processes in organizations and to those who research selection systems."
In this context, as a sample, in fourth chapter of this book, "Managing 'Customers' of Selection Processes", Stephen W. Gilliland and Bennett Cherry (1) focus on managing the customers of selection, (2) specifically consider the perspective of each customer group in each of the three stages of the selection process (that is, development, assessment, feedback), and (3) finally conclude the chapter with some summary recommendations for maintaining as successful customer-based selection system.
(1). Who Are the Customers? : In this section, Gilliland and Cherry define customers of selection, and their needs, desires, and goals for selection are summarized as :
a. Line Managers :
* Accurate and informative indicators of applicant potential.
* Quick and easy-to-use selection process.
* Flexibility and accommodation of selection procedures.
* Perceived validity of selection process.
b. Coworkers :
* Accurate and informative indicators of applicant potential.
* Input into the selection decision-making process.
* Perceived validity of selection process.
c. Applicants :
* Appropriate hiring decision.
* Unbiased, job-related selection process that gives them a chance to demonstrate their potential .
* Honest and sensitive interpersonel treatment.
* Timely and informative feedback.
(2). Managing Customers of Selection : After defining the stages of a customer-based selection system as development, assessment, and feedback, in this section, they consider how to manage the needs of the customers during each of these selection stages.
(3). Summary Recommendations : In this section, they made the following recommendations for managing the customers of selection.
a. For Line Managers and Coworkers :
* Communicate how and why a new selection system is being developed.
* Involve line managers in development and administration of the selection system.
* Train line managers in the use of the selection system and in effective interviewing and decision making.
* Simplify the assessment process to ease administration.
* Solicit feedback on the effectiveness of and satisfaction with the selection system.
b. For Applicants :
* Include applicant concerns in the development of the selection system.
* Provide applicants with an understanding of what the selection process entails and how it was developed.
* Make sure the selection procedures are job-related and unbiased, and give applicants a chance to demonstrate their potential.
* Make sure the selection process is consistently administered.
* Treat applicants with honesty and respect, and allow for two-way communication.
* Deliver timely and informative feedback to applicants on the hiring decision.
* Solicit feedback from applicants on their reactions to the selection process.
Not only this chapter, but this book as a whole is highly recommended for HR practitioners.

Book Description
Food safety scares such as salmonella in eggs or BSE in beef continue to cause public concern. But far more unnoticed is the way that genetic engineered food is entering our diet. This book looks at how this situation came about, revealing those responsible for driving genetically modified foods so rapidly on to the market. Stephen Nottingham argues that consumer pressure could decide whether these new products succeed or fail. His book gives us the facts: what these new foods are, how they are produced, why they remain unlabelled and how they are arriving on our plates unannounced. Never before has science been likely to have quite such a huge impact on our lives--after all, we are what we eat. Here is an issue every thinking person needs to apply their mind to. This is the book to help you do it.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Book on An Important Topic .......2005-01-09
The author presents a lot of important and useful information on the field of genetic engineering, particularly to the risks involved in the planting and consumption of genetically modified crops. His text is very well written and well substantiated through many references.
I was very impressed to read the thoroughly researched topics such as ecological risks of using genetically modified crops, which includes discussion of the emergence of herbicide resistant crops and insecticide resistant crops. The ethical and moral issues were also covered. Also, the possible health risks, such as allergic reactions and antibiotic resistance from eating genetically modified foods were particularly relevant to me.
As a consumer, I found this book a very informative and excellent read. Bravo!!
A most balanced view of a contentious subject........1999-10-09
Genetically modified foodstuffs are one of the most contentious subjects in the world today and will become more so as trade talks include their export. Nottingham has written a clear, balanced and judicious summary of both the biotechnology involved by how it impacts both developed and developing nations. The book is a must for anyone who wants to avoid the hype of both the agrochemical companies who produce GM products and the antis. Highly recommended.

Science faces major challenges in tackling the interlinked problems of poverty and environmental sustainability. This book calls for a restructuring of our present arrangements to achieve integrated natural resource management--integration across scales, system components, disciplines and knowledge types. It advocates the necessity of modelling, multi-scale analysis and action research, institutional and organizational development, and communication enhancement. The book draws on case studies throughout the world.

Product Description
This book is the fruit of 27 years of study and research into one of the most beautiful cultural heritages that come to us from the ancient Siamese kingdom, now called Thailand.
Customer Reviews:
Disapointed.......2006-08-24
I am very familiar with Ajarn De Cesaris and his work. He is a very well versed practitioner of Muay Thai and Muay Boran. I liked his videos (mostly). I am however very disappointed with the book. I felt there was way too much tooting of his own horn and very little technical information. There was however plenty of historical information and perpectives from the author himself. But over and over again we hear how his organization is the one that did this or that. I know already your contribution and feel it unnecessary to hear it 25 times. I thought that someone as passionate about spreading the Thai National Arts would have given a little more technical information on the actual techniques vs. theories and perspectives. Indeed the only techniques or tricks actually described were the same ones described in Panya Kraitus' book over 15 years ago. Nothing new in the way of techniques here, only a few different angles on the history and traditions. In this book I feel he points out and exploits what to me is the obvious. We know Muay Thai has grown and become accepted worldwide. We know it is generally accepted amongst MMA fighters. We know the author has helped the movement towards the ancient style of Muay Thai "Muay Boran". We know Muay Thai is ever changing. If you have read any of the other books on Muay Thai you also know the basic Mae Mai and Look Mai techniques described in this book. although the authors perspectives are interesting this book seems much more of a marketing ploy to me to get you to buy the authors videos, attend his seminars or join his organization because if you don't... you will actually learn very little from this book.
Book Description
A wonderfully new and light-hearted approach to learning Spanish! This brand new series really hits the mark for anyone who might have ever hesitated to pick up a language learning course before.
Without the Fuss takes a bold plunge into the largest pool of customers Living Language knows: the hesitant, the intimidated, and certainly anyone who has really bad memories of high school Spanish classes!
It's all in one easy book (with an audio CD affixed to the inside back jacket) that presents the language as it's really spoken. Cartoons, very engaging page layouts, fun dialogues, maps, great cultural information and even a good dose of slang all make this new program delightfully different.
FEATURES:
• A lighthearted and simple, but carefully designed and well-written Spanish course for intimidated learners
• Full of dialogues that reflect the colloquial and idiomatic standard Spanish as it is really spoken
• Entertaining and laid-back "language coach" guides readers through the lessons, so they don’t feel lost or wonder what to do next
• Up to ten activities in each lesson that put everything right to use
• An "insider" look at everyday Spanish life and culture
• Features the most commonly used slang terms
• Cartoons in each chapter
• 400-page book and a 60-minute audio CD
Customer Reviews:
Fun & Funny.......2007-09-14
Great way to learn Spanish. We've tried lots of other products, this one keep the attention of a 15 y.o. who didn't really want to learn the language.
Delightful in spite of its flaws.......2005-05-28
Other reviews have mentioned what's wrong with this book. Nonetheless, I found it improved my Spanish rapidly and easily. I had had nothing but the 16 Pimsleur 1 CDs before starting this book. Never took Spanish in school. Still found that I could understand most of this CD after a few listenings and checking with the book what I was hearing. Munday's CD is awesome, although I too wish they had included all the dialogues. That might have required two CDs, but would have been worth it. Anyway, the CD includes speakers from many countries, so one gets to hear lots of different Spanish accents, from Castilian to Mexican, Colombian, Argentinian, and Puerto Rican. The dialogues are entertaining and easy to listen to over and over. The actors are quite good--more talent than on any other language tapes or CDs I have listened to. The amusing story flow helps the phrases stick in one's head. From the taxi driver at the beginning to the difficult department store cashier to the snotty teenager to the flamers in the chat room to the rabid soccer fan to the soap opera addict, the characters all hold one's interest. I find I can listen to it over and over without getting bored, and every time more of it stays with me. I liked that the book teaches the "tu" form thoroughly. Although there is nothing better than Pimsleur for getting a solid start in a language, I find it annoying when Pimsleur's characters use the formal "Usted" to say things like, "Can I go to your house with you? I haven't seen your mother for a long time. And afterward, we could go to dinner and a movie." Obvious from the dialogue that these people are close friends, but they are using "Usted." Note that Munday's CD does NOT have silent pauses for one to repeat the dialogue. So this is not a substitute for a Pimsleur or Berlitz type of CD, but a useful addition.
For my classes.......2003-05-01
I teach a Beginners' Basic Conversational Spanish course at a local recreation center. This is the second time I'm ordering copies of this book for my group. I find it clear, not for kids and with a little humor to boot. It could be used as a do-it-yourself course too. The CD that comes with it is essential.
Could have been better.......2003-03-09
This book has a good price for a language book with a CD, but they didn't put all the dialogues on the CD. This was clearly an oversight on the part of the person responsible for producing the CD.
Here's the problem: There are 2 dialogues per lesson. Up through lesson 10, both are on the CD. But starting with lesson 11, only the first dialog is on the CD. (The last lesson, 20, has both of them again).
Another problem is that the book does not say which CD track corresponds with the book. (For example Track 21 is for Chapter 11, Dialog 1). I ended up writing the track numbers in the book myself so I could find them on the disc.
On the plus side, the layout is entertaining, with lots of fonts, consistently used, good use of space and shading. The author is not writing a book for a classroom. Translations for each chapter are at the end of the chapter, a much better place to find them, than looking at the end of the book.
One feature that a lot of other books don't work much with is the personal you (tú) form of address. This book uses it a lot, especially in the dialogues. Another feature is that the book is written for an adult, not a student, so you can learn how to say hangover. I was a bit distraught that the section where you say how old you are in Spanish was before the number that I would need for my age!
Another feature is that the author, Pilar Munday, is a woman, and doesn't mind telling MEN that THEY have to say certain words differently, rather than the other way around.
There are some minor errors in the text. I went to the LivingLanguage website looking for an errata sheet. All that's there is a miserable on-line shopping cart.

Customer Reviews:
Good research material.......2004-01-15
I just received ths book in the mail. I have numbers 5 and 6 and they are the best so far. This one is still stunning though. It is very hard to find good research books on contemporary fashion photography and Lisa Lovatt does an incredible job writing about the different styles and critiques of this medium. I highly recommend this title (especially nos. 5 and 6) for anyone interested in researching fashion photography. This book goes way beyond just eye candy and cheap fashion thrills. The images are incredible. I also recommend any books by Rankin (the founder of Dazed and Confused), Terry Richardson, LaChapelle; i-D, Surface, Picture and Vellum magazines.
Absoulutely Amazing.......2000-12-28
I received this book for my 17th birthday. I am a budding photographer and I hope to become involved in the fashion industry when I leave school. This book is fantastic. The images as well as the style of the photgographers was diverse and interesting. Photographers featured include David LaChapelle, Mario Testino and Nick Knight. I loved it and I would really recommend this book to anyone.
interesting but not innovative.......2000-06-22
This book is very appealing to the eye with all the colors different models but the fact of the matter is...it's boring. I bought this book and I do like it but i had antisipated more fashion images. I seemed to get a book full of glossy so-so pictures. The pictures where more avant-garde than of that of fashion photography. If your interested in a fashion photography book, you should look into the impossible image or anything by Nick Night. Hotel lachapelle by David Lachapelle is an excellent fashion book as well. I would recommend those books over this one.
it makes a fortune (not yours).......2000-06-13
well, it's their forth. good enough for people who don't read magazines at all, it gethers a lot of so-call contemporary fashion photos in a book for a good coffee-table vaule, but i think it's only "so-call contemporary", for something more contemporary, try "dazed/confused"
Fashion Scope Without all the Poop.......2000-03-13
If you want to see the trends in action in a well presented layout, this is the ticket. Also has interesting interviews and articles with leading editors as well as photographers. If you're into fashion and aesthetics, go go gadget fashion!
