Book Description
As the influence of labor unions declines in many industrialized nations, particularly the United States, the influence of workers has decreased. Because of the need for greater involvement of workers in changing production systems, as well as frustration with existing structures of workplace regulation, the search has begun for new ways of providing a voice for workers outside the traditional collective bargaining relationship.
Works councils—institutionalized bodies for representative communication between an employer and employees in a single workplace—are rare in the Anglo-American world, but are well-established in other industrialized countries. The contributors to this volume survey the history, structure, and functions of works councils in the Netherlands, Germany, France, Spain, Sweden, Italy, Poland, Canada, and the United States. Special attention is paid to the relations between works councils and unions and collective bargaining, works councils and management, and the role and interest of governments in works councils. On the basis of extensive comparative data from other Western countries, the book demonstrates powerfully that well-designed works councils may be more effective than labor unions at solving management-labor problems.

Book Description
This is not another book about the Human Genome Project. It is, however, about the human genome: the genes that make it up, what the genes do when they are acting properly, and what happens when these genes are damaged. Designed for today's reader who demands quick answers to a wide range of questions, The Human Genome Sourcebook is intended to offer the nonspecialist a first-stop, but fairly detailed, guide to the genome. The information it provides is given context: namely, the basic scientific principles of genome research, the new knowledge unearthed or created by this research, and the social and ethical implications of this knowledge. The Human Genome Sourcebook is organized in several sections to simplify the location of pertinent information:
An extensive section that comprises an in-depth catalogue of human genes listed according to the roles they play in life
A chapter that relates genetic diseases to the specific genes that are damaged to cause the disease.
A detailed glossary giving readers a deeper understanding of genetic terms and concepts
An overview or roadmap of the physical layout of the genome sections. Borrowing from the metaphor of the genome itself, the content of the book provides both information as well as the tools necessary to access that information.

Book Description
Concise descriptions of the animals and their tracks are combined with detailed drawings of the front and back prints, stride patterns and other important identifying aspects. Each animal is captured in accurate black-and-white illustrations, including pattern and print comparisons. A perfect guide for teachers, parents, hikers and urban adventurers.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent small reference book.......2006-02-01
We're very pleased. We have several tracks books and this one is the best small packable one so far. Good clear and complete text descriptions and nice images of the shape of the tracks. An excellent reference for common animals.
Customer Reviews:
excellent little guide to regional tracks.......2003-08-08
This is a fine beginners guide to identifying the tracks you might find while hiking in New England, whether you're in an urban area or on a wilderness hike. While not comprehensive, you will find the more common animals from your environment -- 34 mammals (including mice, squirrels, rabbits, snakes, skunks, frogs and toads, fox, coyote, porcupine, raccoon, deer, moose and bear) and 9 birds (including grouse, crow, duck, owl, heron and eagle).
The book begins with a preface of enouragement followed by an introduction on how to use the book and where/how to look for tracks, continues with 2-page species entries, and concludes with a short suggested reading list and an index.
Entries are ordered roughly by size, and a 5-inch ruler is printed on the back cover. Each entry has a couple of descriptive paragraphs on the lefthand page and b&w line drawings of typical tracks on the right.
This little book is surprisingly informative and quite compact -- a perfect introductory book for kids or adults who are interested in the wildlife around them.
It is a great book for identifing animals........1999-06-06
I use this book everytime I go hikin

A great reference.......2005-08-02
I purchased this book along with "How to Succeed in Commercial Real Estate" by John Bowman, based on reviews of other reviewers on Amazon.com. It was great advice and I want to contribute in the same way. These two books have already helped me in my career and given me added confidence.
This book is one that will be helpful in dissecting some of the tedious, even boring language of leases. If you're in commercial real estate, it's hard to ignore because that's where half the work is. It breaks down topics into digestable chunks.
Clients will expect you to know this stuff and lead them through a maze of commercial issues. The key is not to be an expert in everything but to have familiarity with the topics that invariably come up. When it's over your head, you need to defer to your team of trusted advisors, be it legal, accounting or engineering resources for instance. However, when it's suppose to be in your head and it's not, you can refer to this lease book time and time again and prepare yourself with the knowledge you need.
I recommend this highly to people starting out in commercial real estate. Much success to you!
For leasing commercial buildings.......2001-05-15
This seems to be a step by step guide, in some detail, on the leasing of commercial property. It is not a guide for leasing other items like equipment or vehicles.
Solid Overview for Understanding Commercial Leasing.......1999-12-29
As a partner in a major commercial brokerage this book has become part of the mandatory reading for new entry level brokers. After reading the book, it was clear that not understanding all of the parts of a commercial lease brings no value to our clients. I recommend it to anyone that is involved in commercial leaseing.

too obvious.......2006-06-29
this book contains nothing new.just stuff you can find surfing in the internet for a few hours.not worth reading it-the things are too obvious.
Not many secrets revealed.......2005-05-29
The author tries to cover many subjects (skin, hair, body, cellulite, exercise, makeup, style, clothes, stress, spirituality...) in a small book (little over 150 pages). So, she doesn't go into any depth - you probably know almost everything written here. But, scattered throughout the book, there are some useful tips and product recommendations. Unfortunately, I am not sure if they are worth the 10 bucks.

Book Description
Barbara Rollin has made a profitable hobby out of asking. She asks: credit card companies to lower her interest rates, stores to pay for her time when deliveries are late, hotels to lower their room rates upon check-in, and more. And companies comply, usually with a smile. Readers will learn how to ask for themselves and get more than they ever dreamed possible through these simple techniques.
Customer Reviews:
Don't Settle for Mediocrity!.......2005-06-14
Do you feel cheated when it comes to customer service? If you do, then you might enjoy this book about getting complete satisfaction when dealing with business. Whether it's a replacement for a defective product; a complimentary product or service; or a complete refund, this guide explains what to do for maximum customer benefit.
The majority of businesses are ethical and provide good products and services, but there is always going to be the occasional exception. When things don't go the way they should, you need to take prompt action to get the situation remedied. This book emphasizes the importance of ASKING for what is due to you, as a customer. Businesses want customers to be happy, but they are not going to come to you when things don't work out. You must take the initiative and explain your dissatisfaction to the business. You will never get anywhere if you don't begin by asking.
Besides the emphasis on asking, this book is loaded with examples of customer service mishaps, defective product encounters, and sloppy service experiences. In each instance, the book explains what was done to correct the problem and what results were achieved. In most every case, the business agreed to correct the problem in some way- either by replacing the product, offering a discount on a future visit, or giving a full refund.
Most of what you read in this book is common sense and unless you don't have any skill dealing with people and customer service reps specifically, you will likely find only a small amount of value in this book. I found it to be ok, but nothing special since I already have gotten into the habit of speaking up with things go wrong.
This book is a good motivational tool, if nothing else. The first step to achieving customer satisfaction is to ask for it. If you don't do this, you will never get what you want. And this book does a good job in the way it emphasizes the importance of asking. Don't settle for bad products or services. If you don't like what you got, ask the company to make it better. You'll be surprised how quickly they respond.
Dynamic, Hilarious, Revolutionary.......2001-12-02
This book leaves nothing unchallenged. Barbara does NOT take No for an answer. She probes and questions till businesses are worn down and give her what she wants. She's not intimidated by their usual tactics -- "It's not company policy," "No one has ever asked before--" yadda, yadda. She's daring and audacious and shows us how we can ask too, without changing or going through a special program. Just by reading the book, you get empowered and start Asking, not being cowed and intimidated. The bullets on the cover don't do the book justice. It's a lot more than getting deals, but an empowerment and a way to not feel helpless in the marketplace. Plus, the book is such fun and easy to read.
Non-stop - Couldn't put the book down!.......2001-11-27
This book was one of those ones that you just don't put down because you are so eager to see what happens next. I hate getting taken advantage of by retail sellers and service providers, so this book helped me understand their MOs and figure out how to get help from them to get satisfaction. Can't go wrong here - I'm loading up for Christmas presents.
A Riot to Read and Money Saving.......2001-11-23
I enjoyed this book so much. Barbara has a great sense of humor and you can't put the book down. What will she do next! It's helped me in many situations with businesses and made asking painless.
Good book.......2001-11-06
This book gave me some fun, useful tips on how to assert myself as a consumer in an often treacherous marketplace. It helped me to realize that I have rights as a consumer to get what I am paying for. The author also emphasizes that businesses like to please customers, and will often go to great lengths to do so. I will no longer feel uncomfortable about asking for the best price or best interest rate or best whatever. This book gave me the tools to feel confident and to deal with businesses nicely so that both me and the salesperson walk away feeling good (and I save money!). This book will be on my Christmas gift-giving list. I know my mom will love it.

Fair Trade for All: How Trade Can Promote Development (Initiative for Policy Dialogue Series C)
ASIN: 0262024012 |
Book Description
The original contributions in Fair Trade and Harmonization investigate the growing conflict between free trade policies and the domestic environmental, labor, and antitrust policies of individual nations. They clarify the issues and offer a critical economic and legal analysis of the contending positions along with a series of proposals for resolving or reconciling them. Taken together, the two volumes present a comprehensive catalog of the government actions that are causing conflict in these areas and a critique of the existing scholarly literature on the subject.
In each area, the contributors extensively discuss and analyze forms of policy harmonization and the arguments for and against it, with a goal of better understanding as a constant throughout. A more particular goal, however is to take a sober second look at, and impose some restraint upon, the growing chorus of demands to push aside the existing trade institution (the World Trade Organization) in the name of social policies, especially those regarding environmental and labor rights.
