Making Change Stick: Twelve Principles for Transforming .......2007-07-16
In business, it is important to continually come up with better strategies to improve quality, service, and profits. In order to do so, change is inevitable. Unfortunately, change is often fraught with initial resistance and then fails to become entrenched into the system. Eventually, the old comfortable system replaces the proposed change and nothing really ever changes.
Making Change Stick looks at the reasons that change doesn't stick. Not only does this book give readers ideas on how to present changes in a more positive, productive way to reduce initial resistance and bitterness but the author also gives the reader ideas on how to entrench new changes to produce a smoother transition. One of the most valuable sections in this book explains that individuals will react to change in different ways, according to their personality types. Since each of these personality types reacts differently to change, each will also require differing coping mechanisms to make change stick.
Great Read and Reference.......2006-10-22
I am constantly looking for the latest reference book on improving my business, employee motivation, being the best etc. Richard Reale's book "Making Change Stick" came along at the perfect time. I had been constantly beating myself up on "how do I get the changes to last or stick? Richard puts the whole concept into perspective, you can also tell that he has walked the walk and isn't just talking. A great read full of real life examples and ideas. Highly recommended.

weLEAD Book Review by the Editor of leadingtoday.org.......2006-10-19
Author and consultant Richard Reale wants to help your organization to become sticky! In Making Change Stick he defines sticky as the ability to accomplish and sustain change. Reale correctly observes that leaders tend to focus on the technical side of change but typically ignore the human or people side of change. But, change is personal and involves human emotion and commitment. Any process that emphasizes technical skills at the expense of soft skills is doomed to failure. To provide a balance, Making Change Stick offers the reader twelve principles for making change effective and lasting. These principles are based on a philosophy that long-term success is built on a foundation of a culturally open system. Reale defines this as, "ready to adapt as necessary to prosper under any market conditions." He further adds this culture should be "dynamically adaptive and supportive of the needs of customers, employees, and shareholders."
The twelve principles for making change stick are a series of repeating patterns that help an organization to become change-capable. Reale believes that one or more of the twelve principles have been violated or ignored when change does not last in an organization. For example, principle number six is confront fear. Many leaders are unaware of why individuals are fearful of change and how to openly discuss it. A healthy culture nurtures an environment where workers feel safe to discuss their fears. It is when these fears are gracefully exposed, they can be confronted by the individual, and their feelings defused.
After the twelve principles are discussed, Making Change Stick concludes with a couple of beneficial chapters. One outlines how to create a culture that sustains change. Reale is a strong proponent of establishing a guidance team or transformation management group to facilitate this need. The final chapter offers sage advice to organizational leaders, and encourages them to use their emotional intelligence to relinquish control throughout the organization to committed and competent followers. Each chapter ends with some questions to ponder and practical ways to put each principle into practice. Reale also spices the book with his personal experiences, quotations and charts to develop his major points.
Making Change Stick is a practical primer for anyone involved in the change process within an organization. It provides many valuable points that together show how connected the entire company must be for change to be lasting and successful. It reinforces why change is both a technical and people oriented process. If you are personally involved in any change process, this book will help it to all make sense and help you to be a productive part of the process.
A wonderful resource for change management.......2006-07-23
Two figures stand out when reading this book: twelve and twenty. What do they have in common? The same man, Richard C. Reale. For twenty years, he's studied why change fails and why it succeeds. Then he boiled down his knowledge base into twelve principles that are absolutely necessary if change is to happen correctly and last in an organization. The amazing thing is that these principles will not only ensure the success of a transformation, but will pay dividends in the long run, by having made an organization more change-capable.
So what's missing? What's causing organizations to fail when implementing change? The most common reason is the "failure to consider the human side of change." It's easy enough to draw the roadmap. The hardest part is the execution, the fulfillment of that plan. If you don't believe it, just look at the last time you resolved to do something. What was harder: making the decision and putting some thought into how to best achieve it, or actually doing what you planned?
The twelve principles outlined in this book allow organizational leaders to focus on the people, and to empower them to bring change to fruition. It's about setting down the right process for change, and following along closely, making sure change is proceeding as planned. It's about walking the talk, and encouraging people to do the same by praising their efforts to change, and setting them up for success. It's about monitoring the right metrics, the ones that will tell you how you're really doing. In theory, it doesn't sound hard, but in practice, it's another story. Fortunately, the author explains every one of the twelve principles in detail, and the examples he gives clearly illustrate the point. Inspirational quotes from notable personalities are also provided, to help drive home the point.
This book is a wonderful resource. Twenty years of "on-the-job" experience can't be wrong. The author's expertise shows, and will help guide the book's readers toward that great goal of organizational change, which is a hard goal to achieve indeed. If individual change is hard, organizational change is orders of magnitude harder - but this book will show you how to do it successfully. Get it, and achieve lasting change!
A TO-THE-POINT GUIDE FOR SUCCESSFUL ORGANIZATIONAL CHANGE........2006-05-28
Based on his experience, the author has written a top-notch, practical guide to successful organizational change, centered on twelve principles:
1. Know where you are going
2. Challenge your thinking
3. Involve and be involved
4. Align your culture
5. Honor emotions
6. Confront fear
7. Don't wait for perfection
8. Communicate intentionally
9. Set people up for success
10. Catch people doing something right
11. Measure stuff that matters
12. Lead from the heart
A chapter is devoted to each of these principles. Each chapters concludes with a set of questions and concise guidelines for putting the principle into practice.
Two concluding chapters concern an approach to creating an internal structure for change and the role of leadership. The central theme is that by applying all of these principles, "sticky" change can be achieved--change that is accomplished and sustained.
This is a to-the-point guide for any leader faced with the challenge of organizational change. Highly recommended!

Essential for my course.......2000-03-09
I began presenting an intro course on environmental topics, for which there is a mound of ordinary texts. It was hard to choose, and I doubted if much would be retained from set reading. McConnell and Abel's Environmental Issues, when I found it, proved to be the best choice. Though not comprehensive it sets achievable tasks for my students, gets them busy and both links several skills together and hones them. Since adopting it, I see definite improvements in interest, attention and achievement. It has even given me confidence to start adding modules from my own areas of interest, so clear is the design.

Introduction to Sport Psychology Made Easy.......2001-08-22
Doing Sport Psychology is edited by Mark B. Anderson who has worked with athletes for many years in both Australia and the United States. He is the first and current editor of the Professional Practice section of the international journal The Sport Psychologist. Hence he has a sound practical working knowledge of applied sport psychology. The authors of the book are well respected in the field of sport psychology and the book provides a fantastic opportunity for readers to sample their practical style rather than simply reading chapters on theory and principles. It is invaluable to read about what has and has not worked for other practitioners. The chapters provide learning experiences, which can only be of benefit to readers.
Doing Sport Psychology aimed to focus on the process of delivering sport psychology services to athletes and performers. It covers applied issues such as the planning of and note taking for initial and subsequent psychology sessions, the implementation of skills such as relaxation, self-talk, imagery, goal setting, and addresses problematic issues such as depression, suicide, eating disorders, injury, career transitions, and grief. Furthermore the book outlines supervision arrangements, internship experiences, and working as a sport psychologist at the Olympics. Additionally there are chapters on applying the skills learned in the sport psychology domain to coaching and performing artists.
In every chapter the authors identify the relevant and prevalent issues for the topic and provide insight into their experiences working with the issue. This process is complimented by the inclusion of dialogue from their own case studies. These case studies provide a reference that very few, if any, sport psychology texts provide. Anderson (2000) has used Doing Psychotherapy by Basch (1980) as model in developing this book and it has proven to be successful. The book is extremely easy to read. The language used is clear and concise. The authors write in a relaxed and natural way that makes reading enjoyable.
The main strength of this book is its practical nature. This is vital for psychology students who are trying to specialise in the sporting domain. Moreover it can provide refreshing advice for psychologists currently practicing in the field. The emphasis on dialogue promotes the importance of the working relationship between psychologist and coach, athlete or allied health practitioner.
Throughout the book Cognitive Behavioural Therapy was discussed and utilised, however it is important to point out that other therapeutic techniques such as a psychodynamic approach were advanced. The application of alternative approaches is often an overlooked concept from postgraduate training in sport psychology and thus their inclusion promotes a multidimensional field. Despite the clear importance of the dialogue and the brief mention of alternative therapeutic approaches, the quantity of dialogue may be excessive at times, especially as it does not provide examples of therapist-client interactions that are unique to the sporting domain. The dialogue would be enhanced by reducing the superfluous exchanges and demonstrating a variety of therapeutic approaches.
The differentiation between sport psychology and other branches of psychology was beneficial in clarifying the unique circumstances that sport psychologists can experience during their work. Despite the apparent differences the book still emphasises the importance of adhering to ethical standards. These words of advice are very useful for students who are undertaking their internship or externship placements. A particular aspect of the book which was simple but had practical relevance to sport psychology was the concept of asking yourself why a particular method or intervention was chosen. Furthermore self-monitoring was another concept that is a particularly helpful tool in the practice of sport psychology.
Doing Sport Psychology is aimed at students, supervisors, and practitioners of sport psychology. This book is valuable to students undertaking specialised education and training in sport psychology. In particular, the book is useful for those students who have limited practical experience. There are examples throughout of how service delivery is accomplished. Doing Sport Psychology is a valuable resource for each of the aforementioned target groups.

"Doing Sport Psychology" Opens the Door to Sport Psych.......2001-01-16
"It is the first book to accurately depict the complex and dynamic work of everyday sport psychology. . . The most impressive quality of this book is that it focuses on the process of sport psychology interventions," wrote Shane Murphy in the Afterword of this excellent text. This is a ground-breaking book that lets the reader in on sessions conducted by a variety of sport psychology practitioners. I found myself captivated by the discussions of professional and substantive issues raised by the twenty-two contributors and their editor. The chapters gave me ideas and caused me to reflect on my own work with clients. The attention given to the specific actions and choices we make with clients was intriguing. In a few instances, authors referred to the notion of "biblio-therapy," or giving a book to a client as part of the intervention. Doing Sport Psychology could be viewed as "biblio-supervision" or as an essential learning tool for developing practitioners. Remarks on the back cover state that this is the book that Andersen wishes he had when he was in graduate school, and I echo his sentiments and recommend this volume highly for graduate applied sport psychology courses. As Murphy suggested, it is somewhat surprising that our field has not had a book of this kind until now. It is a much welcomed addition to the literature. A great strength of the writing is that authors showed their human side, their mistakes, and vulnerabilities. For graduate students and new practitioners, this is a rich learning ground. Although the authors varied in the extent to which they revealed themselves, the overall work takes much of the mystery out of what sport psychologists do. Many of us got involved in sport psychology out of an interest in people and the processes they go through in sports. The sundry case studies give us a window into individuals' dynamics and the work being done. "Doing Sport Psychology is about what practitioners have found to be helpful out there on the playing fields, and it focuses more on the effectiveness side of the ongoing debate in treatment outcome research" (p. xv)

excellent developmental composition text.......2005-10-27
This is the best developmental composition textbook I've seen or used. It opens with chapters exploring each step of the writing process, including exercises for students to do on their own or in class. Next are several chapters covering different genres of essay-writing. Each chapter includes three examples of the genre, one each from school, work, and everyday life contexts. 9 or 10 genres are included (including several types of arguement) so that the instructor can pick and choose which ones to focus on. Another section briefly introduces the research process. The final section, which takes up half of the book, covers grammar topics. It's organized according to frequency and severity of error, beginning with "The four most serious errors," (fragments, run-one, subject-verb agreement, and other verb problems). Each chapter includes a real-life example showing why it's important, in the real world, to understand these grammar concepts. Everything is explained in clear, simple language, with as little specialized terminology as possible. This is a terrific textbook, particularly for a community-college developmental writing class.
Book Description
Few books of costume design are more useful than this volume. Detailed drawings in a continuous chronological format provide a history of costume design from the first century AD to 1930. More than 1,400 illustrations chronicle the full sweep of two millennia of Western garb, from Roman noble to Victorian dandy, from Elizabethan lady to Jazz Age schoolboy.

a gift well received.......2007-01-10
This was purchased as a gift for my 11-year-old granddaughter who is very interested in historic costumes. She immediately, on Christmas day, sharpened the special hard-lead colored pencils I bought to go with it and proceeded to submerge herself in the detailed illustrations. Seemed like a successful gift to me.
Good for quick visual reference!.......2006-07-04
I love to use this book as a quick visual reference while working on shows. When helping a customer, or explaining something to an assistant at our shop, this book is the easiest way to do so. It is so great to have a book where I can flip to a certain date, and have pages full of pictures grouped together to show someone what exactly I am thinking of. We have to work at a fast pace, and this book saves me lots of valuable time.
Lovely pics, no writing.......2005-08-29
They say up front that they (the authors) purposely did not put in any writing to as not to sway our view of the clothing. Alas, that means if one does not know period clothing from LOTS of different periods, one will not be able to identify items. Still, lovely drawings. It will make a fine adult coloring book! (Yes, I'm serious) :-)
Don't waste your money.......2005-08-27
This book consisted of black and white 2D scetches that lacked any real depth or detail. They are basic and generalised in presenting each period and contain nothing new that you would not have already seen or known about that decade.
I do not recommend it to anyone who has a intrest in costume or design, but think it would be better suited as a childrens colouring in book.
Don't waste your money.
A wonderful reference book that I couldn't live without.......2005-03-25
This is quite simply a fabulous book, and a very useful one too! I am an author who writes historical novels, and when I need to know what the characters I'm writing about would have been wearing in any given year from antiquity through to modern times (1930s), I turn to this book. Fortunately, it's not cluttered with text, but merely contains drawings, pure and simple and straighforward. It's the quickest, most accurate reference book I own, aside from my dictionary, of course.
My only qualm is that it doesn't contain anything about undergarments, such as bustles, knickers, petticoats, crinolines or girdles. But then, the pictures in this book are sourced from historical paintings, sculptures, mosaics, illuminated manuscripts and so forth, which probably never showed such things, as they might have been considered indecent or irrelevant. (I suppose not too many people throughout history wanted to be painted in their underwear!)
If you're a writer, an arts student, a costume designer or just someone who has an interest in the history of fashion, I would highly recommend this book to you.
