Fantastic!!.......2001-11-01

This book is a really great find. It goes through the evolution of cetaceans and pinnapeds. It uses some wild termanology but they are all defined for you. It covers every aspect of marine mammal evolution. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in whales and dolhpins or seals and sea lions.

Great book at giving the readers dynamic information not just about marine mammals, but also their systematic relationships. It is inclusive of both fossil and extant taxa. Covers most aspects of pinniped, cetacea, and sirenian biology. It is highly understandable to the novice of phylogenetic systematics.

Could have used a better editor........2005-01-29

Perry Lefko, Thoroughbred Racing's Greatest Day (Taylor, 2003)

First, be advised: this is not a new book. If you've read Lefko's The Greatest Show on Turf, this is a revised and updated edition to commemorate the twentieth anniversary of the first running of the Breeders' Cup. I hadn't read the book the first time around, so I can't compare the two, but take note if you have.

They changed the title, but didn't really make it any clearer: Thoroughbred Racing's Greatest Day is about the Breeders' Cup. Non-fans are more likely to think it has something o do with the Kentucky Derby. Hardcore fans will think any of a hundred days (the Dubai World Cup? Grand National? Melbourne Cup, a national holiday in Australia?), the Breeders' Cup being one of them. The last group are right. Various and sundry stories about specific Breeders' Cup days, specific Breeders' Cup horses or families of horses, owners, trainers, Lefko pretty much covers the gamut of stories here.

It will do the reader well to remember that Perry Lefko is a journalist. He is also unaware that a book-length piece requires a different writing style than a newspaper article. It is best to treat this book as a series of very long newspaper articles; it'll help you get through it quite well. If that were the book's only problem, I'd probably give it an above-average rating and move on. However, the book has a number of errors that it's hard to believe any horse fan would make (most notably, the sporadic misspelling of the names of champion horses, like 1998 Breeders' Cup Distaff winner Escena). While I tried not to let it affect my judgment, Lefko, like most of the rest of the media, is obsessed with the Most Overhyped Event in American History(TM), and in any passage of the book dealing with the 2001 or 2002 Breeders' Cup, there will be far more mention of 9/11 than could possibly be warranted.

Recommended only for already-established racing fans. The rest of you would do far better to start off with something better-written (unfortunately, I'm not familiar with anything focusing specifically on the Breeders' Cup in book form that's better-written); William Murray's The Wrong Horse is a lovely introduction to the world of Thoroughbred racing, as is Bill Barich's classic combination of novel and memoir Laughing in the Hills. ** ½

Doesn't Get Any Better.......2004-02-03

Artfully written, factually accurate accounting of racing's most colorful sporting pageant. The in-depth research moves the reader willingly along through a series of mini-stories (chapters) that cumulatively provide a compelling overview of "Thoroughbred Racing's Greatest Day."

Hard work results in excellent book.......2004-01-15

This an excellent book for anyone interested in horseracing and especially the Breeders' Cup.

I was lucky enough to spend some time with Lefko in the Press Box at Woodbine in the early 1990s and also while he was writing the first edition of this book in New York in 1995.

He is without a doubt the hardest working reporter I have ever met and it certainly shows in these tales of the great (and not so great) steeds and the people that love them, train them, ride them, live with them and and bet on them - legally and otherwise (Chapter 21 - The Fix Six).

Lefko probably did over 1000 interviews while researching this labor of love and he has woven these interviews together with previously uncovered gems of information to create a superb read.

Angel Cordeo, Franki Dettori, Pat Day, Cigar, Lukas, Arazi, the Paulson's, little known tidbits of horsey history, comments from real racing fans and more make this book one of a kind and a must for any racing fan.

Of Horses and Men.......2003-12-05

Thoroughbred racing is a story more complex than simply which horse finished first. In this engaging "behind the scenes" look, the author lifts the veil to reveal an array of characters and events that have shaped the Breeders' Cup. Obviously well-researched, this book provides in-depth portraits of the Breeders' "players". Written in an amiable voice that takes the reader deep into the world of professional horse racing, one gets a clear sense of the monies, time and emotions invested by jockeys and owners alike. Avoiding pondering, pedantic rhetoric, this book is written by and for horse racing aficionados. Each chapter profiles winners, losers and horse whisperers and makes for entertaining reading. If you or someone you know is interested in horse racing, I recommend this book be included on your holiday gift list.

A great learn and dream treatise.......2003-04-04

I,ve floated and fished the Green for over 20 years and one of my great joys is listening to the tales and advice from great guides such as Dennis Breer and Emmitt Heath. Dennis has put his love and knowledge of this great river into a concise,informative, yet poetic read. Dennis' book will make you a better fisherman in general and, certainly better prepared to match wits with the Green's great trout. The fly tying instructions with color plates are well done and and a necessity to"match the hatch". Sit back and enjoy the Green from your den or get ready to experience the magnificent Green River canyon.

Learning Katakana made easy.......2007-01-12

Although I'm following the Japanese for Busy people approach to learning Japanese, the Let's Learn Hiragana and Katakana books are very good.
Both books break down the Kana into groups. Stroke (or brush) order and direction are detailed, which if you want to be accurate with your written work, this is a must! Additional information about the Kana, how it is used and combined are all explained in simple to understand English.
The books are designed for self-learning (no teacher), and I believe they are simple enough to do this.

Eh it's the best i've seen out there........2003-11-29

Forget "Jimi's Book of Japanese: A Motivating Method to Learn Japanese" and that "Kana Pict-o-Graphix : Mnemonics for Japanese Hiragana and Katakana",
both suck (especially compared to this). They are a waste of money unless you are unable to learn anything and need the tiny pict-o-graph book to remind you ever time you read. (it's tiny and does not explain anything properly).

Just get this, his hiragana and kanji books, and "Kanji ABC: A Systematic Approach to Japanese Characters"
and writing is well covered (short of indepth college junk).
his book isn't perfect but common sense should adequatly cover any of his short comings, but i could see how it could confuse someone especially children.

One thing i really liked was his hand writing-ish style of making the characters which made it feel less... unrealistic to more of an everyday thing. (reading some of his examples feels like a letter not some windows controlled text adventure where everything looks exactly the same.)

The worst things about this book = The use of romanji.
if you want to really get into japanese stay away from romanji. romanji will just mess with things badly.

Anyway this book and his series is great, and is worth the money.

This book along with its companion Let's learn Hiragana(which must be previously studied before moving into this one) is surely a great step to mastering Japanese writing and reading. Within a month I could read and write perfectly. At first I thought I would not make it, but Yasuko paved me the way. Now I'm buying Let's learn Kanji and Let's learn more Kanji both from the same series. The book is not a 5-star because it is sold as being a book for self students but it doesn't have all the answers on the answer key. For [$$$] you get both Japanese writings quick and painlessly.

Extremely easy to use.......2001-06-07

I spent a couple of days working through the basic (46) characters in this book before a recent holiday in Tokyo. By the time I arrived I could read the beer ads on the train. Using the later chapters to understand how to write words, combined with the constant exposure of reading as much as I could every day on the train, I left being able to read and write pretty much any Katakana that I'd need to; including the tricker Y[oo]on used to write foreign sounds.

My only gripe would be the authour does assume you've read the companion book Let's Learn Hiragana in a few places. Its not really a bar to understanding, but it means a few terms here and there aren't defined.

Best source for learning Katakana.......1999-04-29

This book is really extensive and takes you through all of Katakana and how it is used within Japanese society.

The book first introduces in Chapter One all the characters and characters and related practice exercises in three sections for a total of 46 characters. In Chapter Two, more advanced lessons are covered on the rules for forming Japanese words with Katakana. Example would be that the second 'o' is changed into a 'u' for Japanese words, and is changed to a dash '-' for foreign words. In Chapter Three, there are lessons on how Katakana is used for Japanese words under certain circumstances. In Chapter Four, rules are thoroughly discussed for writing foreign words in Japanese. Finally in Chapter Five, review exercises are offered including a word puzzle. Appendixes are offered showing the answers to the exercises and the origins of Katakana borrowed from Chinese Kanji.

Finally.....proof that Japanese writing is learnable!.......2003-06-15

When I purchased these two books, I learned that Japanese writing (except for Kanji) makes absolute sense. The authors set the characters up into a grid with vowels across and consonants down so that the student can easily memorize the sounds and characters. It's sort of like the multiplication table, but is set up like a primer for kindergarten children learning to read and write. This book helped me learn all of the characters before starting the Japanese class. What a fabulously logical setup. Love it, love it, love it! And no, I'm not selling my copies. Sorry!

Its an O.K. Book.......2003-09-08

Good historial review of calligraphy, but would not recommend it as a good reference book if you are looking for something to guide and show you how to do calligraphy. Recommend "Encyclopedia of Calligraphy" instead. I purchased first edition many years ago, and accidentally bought this one again. Oh well...
