Book Description
Just like Elliot Wave Principle, its super-bullish predecessor from 1978, this updated and abridged paperback version of At the Crest of the Tidal Wave presents a scenario that appears too dramatic and specific to be more than unfounded conjecture. However, the author's forecasting toll is again the only one that has proved its value in addressing future market probabilities. The result is social science at its best.
If even half of the author's forecasts come to pass, the world of finance just a few years hence will be immeasurably different from what it is today. Using the same precise approach that he employed a month after the 1982 low at Dow 777 to forecast a great bull market that would carry the Dow Industrial Average to near 4000, Robert Prechter now calls for slow motion economic earthquake that will register 11 on the financial Richter scale. The Great Assert Mania of recent years is in its final euphoric months, he says, and the next event will be a collapse of historic proportion.
If you are already well versed in the Wave Principle and prepared for the change that is coming, then ignore this book. If you are not, then devour it cover from cover. Be prepared for a shift in the tectonic plates that make up your mind's notions about financial causality. Above all, get ready for a violent shaking of your faith in conventional economic wisdom.

Maybe I'm Just Too Stupid to Understand This Book.......2006-02-09
If you go to the list showing all of my reviews, you will see that I have read quite a few books about the stock market and trading in general. While I have encountered information that talked in generalities about the Elliott Wave Principle, I had never delved into it in much detail as I never felt the methodology was consistent. Having trudged my way through this book, I have come to the conclusion that either (1) I am too stupid to be able to understand and trade based on the EWP (an admittedly distinct possibility), or (2) I have never read so much after-the-fact 'curve fitting' in my life. If you are a student and believer in the Elliott Wave Principle, this will be like adding a second Bible to your collection. If, however, you don't already know and understand the EWP, and unless you are a genius, plan on spending years trying to understand the theory before you will be able to implement it into your trading system. Sorry, Mr. Prechter, but I just don't get it.
Info pertinent today and tomorrow........2005-03-31
I bought this book used about three years ago. Although I was skeptical of it's contents, since the title seemed dated, I picked it up because it was cheap. It was one of the best buys I've made.
Although I did not read the entire book, the portions I did read (chapters 9-12 about investor psychology) were timeless and made the book well worth the buy. Those chapters are highly recommended reading for contrarians. I'll quote among my favorite lines: "They show that people view stocks as being less risky than treasury bills. Indeed, article after article refers to the "risk of missing gains" as being more important than the risk of loss. This is an optimism so extreme that it has not been seen in the West for nearly three centuries." (p154); "The public is always trading oriented in the early stages of a bull market, and "investment" oriented at the top. - One-Way Pockets 1917 (189); "No top-heavy market with public involvement fails in the end to punish the average investor for his gullibility." (190); "All investment is speculation, and there is no more risky speculation than one that is confidently viewed by a majority of portfolio managers and the public as an investment." (414).
I gave four stars because Prechter's timing of the coming crisis was way off and his predictions sounded extreme, for example: chapter 21, page 431, "... secessionist movement will take place in many countries, including the US ...one or both current political parties will dissapear ...unemployment will reach 30%."
Overall I highly recommend this book. Tidal Wave is easy to read and follow.
Don't Wait for the Noise.......2001-12-23
There was a movie which showed an approaching tidal wave. There was no noise because the wave was travelling faster than the speed of sound. This is the case of the oncoming financial tidal wave of disaster. One can hear the bullish rantings of a stream of advisors, nudging us into a sleeping wonderment of good things to come. The tidal wave is on its way. Prechter has pointed out the various items unfolding before our eyes. He was early in many of the prognostications, but they are surely falling into place. If you read the book, you will surely see how they are unfolding. Your financial health is at stake. The tech wreck was only the beginning. Read on, there is still time, but the book will be out of date in a couple of years.
Must Read.......2001-10-28
This book is a must read for financial survival. Prechter has an engaging writing style. His opinions are often outrageous and sometimes too extreme. This value of this book is in that it is so different from the conventional financial press.
Almost alone Prechter predicted the great bull market back in 1979. He then called the top prematurely but at least he did warn this readers that a top was coming. The scope of Prechter's vision is awesome. He has charts with trendlines going back to 1700 with projections for the next century.
Chapter 11 "Manifestations of Investor Psychology" is very powerful.
Contrarian Bells Are Ringing.......2001-09-14
Having read this book, as well as Ravi Batra's "Crash of the Millenium" and James Dale Davidson's "The Sovereign Individual", I can't help but point out that these are the same people that were telling us to expect a U.S.economic/financial market collapse throughout the '90s(see: "Blood in the Streets" and "The Great Reckoning" by Davidson/Rees-Mogg, "The Great Depression of 1990" by Batra, and Prechter's newsletters/special reports from that period). Obviously, they turned out to be just a tad off the mark. After a peruse of this material, have a look at one of Harry Dent's books for a look at the baby boom spending wave that continues through the latter half of this decade (Dent points out on his website that the current economic dip we are in is similar to the one that took place between 1920-1922, before the Roaring 20's market took off). The only way that the kind of boom the Spending Wave projects can ever take place would be if the majority are looking in the wrong direction. Material such as this book from Prechter, as well as Batra and Davidson, will do very nicely.

Book Description
In todayÆs turbulent business environment, the conventional bases of competitive strategy are increasingly being eroded. In such an environment, the ability to generate and acquire new knowledge is becoming an essential prerequisite for success. This emerging paradigm of business treats knowledge and learning as the singular basis not only for competitive success, but also for corporate survival. Most books on the subject adopt either one of two mutually exclusive approachesùthe first places emphasis on learning as an activity internal to the organization, while the second views learning as a resource to be leveraged by the organization. In Competing Through Knowledge, the first to emanate from India on the subject, Dr. Madhukar Shukla integrates both these approaches and focuses not only on how organizations learn, but also on how they can (and do) use knowledge and learning as strategic weapons to transform their operating paradigms. Beginning with a discussion on the radical changes taking place in the Indian business environment and the need for Indian organizations to develop learning capabilities, the first part of the book provides a framework to understand the dynamics of knowledge-based competition. The second part details six case studies of organizations that have encouraged learning and have utilized knowledge as a competitive asset. Generalizing from these cases, which also serve as benchmarks, the third and last part discusses the architecture of a learning organization and the qualitative shift required in the organization paradigm. Illustrating the ideas and concepts with real-life examples and case studies, including several from India, this book demonstrates the applicability of the new paradigm of the learning organization in the changing Indian business environment. This extremely readable book will appeal to CEOs, practicing managers, human resource professionals, and management consultants. It will also serve as supplementary reading for courses on the learning organization, strategic management, and organizational change.

An Essential Guide to Managing Learning Times.......2000-04-03
Dr. Madhukar Shukla has been referred to as the "indian guru of the learning organisation" and in this book he shows why. Drawing on the theories of giants, he builds up a case for managing in the times when the capital (the K in economics) is Knowledge and vastly different from the traditional capital. As an entity knowledge is tacit and proprietary and as it becomes more explicit it becomes freely available. It is Dr. Shukla's contention that like truth, "knowledge will out" and it makes no sense for organizations to try to put locks on its mobility. Why like truth?...knowledge is truth!
With the examples of case studies of organisations like ABB, British Airways, GE, Citicorp and Xerox , Dr. Shukla shows us how successful corporations around the world are recognising this fact and are trying innovative ways to leverage this capital for competitive advantage...to turnaround themselves, to transform and to innovate.
What makes this book doubly enjoyable, is that it steers as clear of dobbledegook management jargon as much as possible..and when the author has to resort to jargon, they are suitably explained in lay terms. Coupled with examples strewn throughout the book, the often esoteric theories start to make startling sense and sock you between the eye. This book is a must read to all professionals and management people of all hues!

Evolutionary psychology often stomps where other branches of science fear to tread. Case in point: A Natural History of Rape. Randy Thornhill, a biologist, and Craig T. Palmer, an anthropologist, have attempted to apply evolutionary principles to one of the most disgusting of human behaviors, and the result is a guaranteed storm of media hype and debate. The book's central argument is that rape is a genetically developed strategy sustained over generations of human life because it is a kind of sexual selection--a successful reproductive strategy. This runs directly counter to the prevailing notion--that rape is predominantly about violent power, and only secondarily about sex.
The authors base their argument partly on statistics showing that in the United States, most rape victims are of childbearing age. But disturbingly large numbers of rapes of children, elderly women, and other men are never adequately explained. And the actual reproductive success of rape is not clear. Thornhill and Palmer's biological interpretation is just that--an interpretation, one that won't withstand tough scientific scrutiny. They further claim that the mental trauma of rape is greater for women of childbearing age (especially married women) than it is for elderly women or children. The data supporting these assertions come from a single psychological study, done by Thornhill in the 1970s, that mixes first-person interviews with caretaker's interpretations of children's reactions.
While Thornhill and Palmer claim that they are trying to look objectively at the root causes of rape, they focus almost entirely on data that support their thesis, forcing them to write an evolutionary "just-so" story. The central problem is evident in this quote, from the chapter "The Pain and Anguish of Rape":
We feel that the woman's perspective on rape can be best understood by considering the negative influences of rape on female reproductive success.... It is also highly possible that selection favored the outward manifestations of psychological pain because it communicated the female's strong negative attitude about the rapist to her husband and/or her relatives.
Women are disturbed by rape mostly because they are worried about what their husbands might think? In statements like this, the authors repeatedly discount the psychological aspects of rape, such as fear, humiliation, loss of autonomy, and powerlessness, and focus solely on personal shame.
A Natural History of Rape will no doubt have people talking about rape and its causes, and perhaps thinking about real ways of preventing it. In fact, the authors suggest that all young men be educated frankly about their (theoretical) genetic desire to rape. And it reopens the debate about the role of sex in rape. But without more and better data supporting their conclusions, Thornhill and Palmer are doing the very thing they criticize feminists and social scientists of doing: just talking. --Therese Littleton
Book Description
In this controversial book, Randy Thornhill and Craig Palmer use evolutionary biology to explain the causes of rape and to recommend new approaches to its prevention. According to Thornhill and Palmer, evolved adaptation of some sort gives rise to rape; the main evolutionary question is whether rape is an adaptation itself or a by-product of other adaptations. Thornhill and Palmer address, and claim to demolish scientifically, many myths about rape bred by social science theory over the past 25 years. The popular contention that rapists are not motivated by sexual desire is, they argue, scientifically inaccurate. The book also includes a useful summary of evolutionary theory and a comparison of evolutionary biology's and social science's explanations of human behavior.

Weakly based theory.......2006-11-23
I have been a student of Dr. Palmer's at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, and while I admire his ecoanthropology teachings, this book is beyond his scope as an anthropologist. Dr. Palmer's most knowledgeable topics are those of the fishers of Maine and New Foundland. Some of Dr. Palmer's best works are those he did with his former professor and mentor, Lyle Steadman at ASU regarding folklore, mythology and ancestor teachings. If I could have previewed this work before it was published, I would have said, "Craig, stick with what you know!" His documentaion is weak at best, and some of it is truly questionable. While I understand his logic behind this topic, I think his facts are weak. I suppose, if one were inclined, one could turn any set of numbers, statistics or facts to fit the hypothesis they have developed. I think that's what Craig and Randy Thornhill have done. Craig has written some absolutely wonderful works, however, this is not one of them.
My suggestion would be that readers find this in the library and not spend money on it, read it, then come to your own conclusions on whether or not you agree with the evolutionary basis of rape.
Close But No Cigar.......2006-01-23
This book has some interesting hypotheses but I don't believe it makes the case for the "Rape is the Last-Resort Reproductive Strategy" hypothesis as well as the Ghiglieri book does. It is known that rape is widespread throughout the animal kingdom, or something resembling mating by forceful coercion at any rate. I expected to see more of that kind of discussion than just a bunch of old statistics regarding us boring old homo sapiens. Keep in mind, though, that among humans the majority of rapists are men in their sexually peak years, and the majority of victims are those women in their peak reproductive stages as well. Sure, there are super-psychos that rape old women, kids or men, for example, but the mere existance of those datapoints do nothing to blunt the force of the evidence in favor of the theory that rape is the last-resort reproductive strategy. In fact, it is well-known that the majority of rapes that occur: a) are date rapes! and b) an overwhelming number of the victims tend to be college aged women! Also, let me say that explaining why something happens is NOT the same as justifying it. Given that Thornhill's wife is actually a rape counselor (!) it would be quite odd if he wrote a book justifying it, to say the least. What Thornhill and Palmer seek to do is take something that is a norm (yes, a norm!) of human culture, and try and figure out why the hell it's been going on for as long as anybody knows, and why it still is!
I do not believe that there is much scientists or anthropologists can say about a human nature: but they can say that men enjoy forming groups of men to go and kill 'outsiders' (however they may be so designated) (aka "war"); that many youngish men don't mind raping women, and in fact studies have shown that many men are turned on by depictions of rape in movies, magazines, etc; that most men are turned on by lesbian sex, and most women are NOT generally turned on by homosexual sex (i.e., men-on-men); and, finally that people like to congregate in coastal areas to consume cheap alchololic beverages when they have spare time (aka "vacation"). That's about all that can be said about a 'human nature.'
Let me end by noting that even if rape is a reproductive strategy for the lowest of the low- who have no other chance to mate- well, it is a very very UNSUCCESSFUL strategy when compared to normal one of picking up some tramp in a bar; or say, meeting a women around town and having an actual relationship with her, or meeting a girl in HS or college perhaps. Whatever the case may be, rape is seldom successful in impregnating women, that's why most men don't do it! In one behavioral ecology study, if I recall correctly, a study on scorpion flies, it was observed that out of 74 scorpion fly 'rapes', or matings that appeared to be forced, only 2 resulted in female scorpion flies being successfully impregnated! Dung flies also engage some brutal tactics, every bit as brutal as some scumbag beating a women or drugging her drink at a bar or something.
I by no means intend this review to be comprehensive, but only to convey the fact that there is some substance to Thornhill and Palmer's claims, but they do a poor poor job for making their case. All in all, I wouldn't recommend buying this book, buy Ghiglieri's instead and read Alcock's The Triumph of Sociobiology to get an overall better feel for Thornhill and Palmer's argument. Finally, however, I believe that one thing that helps us humans out is that we can actually critically evaluate our thoughts and actions: if somebody says, "I couldn't help raping so-and-so, (or maybe just 'random woman')," then I would simply reply: "Take some bloody responsibilty for your actions, of course you could help yourself!" A dung fly may not be able to decide, based on complex cognitive functions, to not rape a female dung fly, but a man can certainly decide not to rape a woman.
Darwin's Male Privilege - Because he Can.......2006-01-15
The license to take what men want regardless of circumstances is the heredity of Darwin and the recognition that social bonding of males will support that privilege. Hence, social license borne of the interpretation of male superiority results in rape and other social infractions that society is willing to condone, or conveniently, fails to enforce, to the beneficial interest of all males, and to the disadvantage of women. Men rape because they can, therefore, and they can "get away with it."
The failure of men to exert social control upon themselves may be due either to desire to dominate, or to obtain that which they would be not entitled to otherwise, and aggressively decide to obtain forcefully. Whether by rape or by fraud or extortion, the premise that men are so indulged by society means they are not fearful of social retribution for the acts, and ignore attempts for society to control their actions - often seen by other men as evidence of masculinity or independence desirable for all men, but to the detriment of women. Patriarchy was invented to indulge male supremacy to accomplish these means and more, and is the primary reason that women cannot obtain equal rights because these unequal rights, now, as embedded, means unhampered male privilege for the benefit of society that empowers male preference, male leadership, and male productivity.
Sound Science, Despite What the Clueless "Feminists" Say.......2005-11-22
Rape is ALL about sex; it's NOT about violence and control (at least not as a means to an end; yes, it's undoubtedly violent, but that's not why men rape). Ask any rapist in prison. He'll tell you that he wanted to get his rocks off. That's the plain ugly truth -- and denying it won't change the basic truth of this postulate. I, for one, am glad that many other scientists -- both men and women -- are coming around to the ideas presented in this book and will hopefully use this information to UNDERSTAND rape and then apply REAL solutions to its eventual eradication from our society. Running around calling these great men (and women) of science "rape apologists" and "lunatics" does nothing but reveal the puerile close-mindedness of the criticizer.
The very sad 'Facts of Life'.......2005-10-19
This book only actually addresses the rape of fertile young women. Men rape because men are always wanting sex, women aren't, so men have various strategies to overcome the female's refusal - which sometimes means the use of physical force.
So what this book is saying, and it does appear to be at least partly true, is that male sexuality can be totally selfish and women must recognize that to be alone with any man, from stranger to husband, is a dangerous place for a female to be unless she wants sex herself.
Chapter 7 deals with the law and punishment and rightly states that this too represents the male's selfish perspective. The authors also note that human female mate choice has not really existed as fathers and brothers have made the choice of mate for their daughters or sisters - and again, in their own self-interest. They do not note that this is uniquely human and how the fact that human females are only now starting to gain ownership of their own bodies is significant to this debate.
It is a fact that sperm is the most abundant resource on the planet while, in traditional societies, there would be a maximum of about 150days in a female's lifetime when she has an egg that could be fertilized. Males are bigger, stronger, risk-takers, more aggressive, more impulsive, more domineering, more selfish AND desperately trying to be the ones who make it to these rare eggs. It is hard to imagine that they will all just sit back and wait to be chosen.
The authors do not properly discuss concealed ovulation and the fact than human males are under the illusion that females of reproductive age are actually fertile everyday. Also, considering how rare actual female fertility is, it is important to recognize the cyclic nature of female sexual interest and to uncover more why human - and other primate females - do choose to have sex for reasons other than 'sex' ie to placate males or avoid future infanticide. Males might 'do sex' for sex but for females sex can often not be sexually motivated.
This book is not all bad but it would be advisable to read more widely about evolution, adaptation and the evolution of sex differences. Sometimes it is the female primate pestering an uninterested male for sex, for example.
It is probably safer and more realistic to recognize sexual behaviour as more selfish than we like to pretend and that male sexuality can be largely parasitic and can pose a great nuisance to females and often a great danger. Perhaps education about sex differences will help females to avoid being alone with males and help males to control this most horrendous of selfish impulses. And when we acknowledge how selfish males as sex seekers, lawmakers and judges are we should also expect to see a steep rise in convictions of rapists.

Description:
The creation of synthetic tailor-made receptors capable of recognizing desired molecular targets with high affinity and selectivity is a persistent long-term goal for researchers in the fields of chemical, biological, and pharmaceutical research. Compared to biomacromolecular receptors, these synthetic receptors promise simplified production and processing, less costs, and more robust receptor architectures. During recent decades, molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) are widely considered mimics of natural molecular receptors suitable for a diversity of applications ranging from biomimetic sensors, to separations and biocatalysis. A remaining challenge for the next generation of MIPs is the synthesis of deliberately designed and highly efficient receptor architectures suitable for recognizing biologically relevant molecules, for which natural receptors are either not prevalent, or difficult to isolate and utilize. Hence, this review discusses recent advances in synthetic receptor technology for biomolecules (e.g. drugs, amino acids, steroids, proteins, entire cells, etc.) via molecular imprinting techniques. Surface imprinting methods and epitope imprinting approaches have been introduced for protein recognition at imprinted surfaces. Imprinting techniques in aqueous solution or organic-water co-solvents have been introduced avoiding denaturation of biomolecules during MIP synthesis. In addition, improved bioreactivity of entire enzyme or active site mimics generated by molecular imprinting will be highlighted. Finally, the emerging importance of molecular modeling and molecular dynamics studies detailing the intermolecular interactions between the template species, the porogenic solvent molecules, and the involved monomer and cross-linker in the pre-polymerization solution will be addressed yielding a rational approach toward next-generation MIP technology.

Description:
A simplified indirect competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (icELISA) for small molecules was established by modifying the procedure of conventional icELISA. The key change was that the analyte, antibody, and enzyme-labeled second antibody in the simplified icELISA were added in one step, whereas in conventional icELISA these reagents were added in two separate steps. Three small chemicals, namely zeatin riboside, glycyrrhetinic acid, and chlorimuron-ethyl, were used to verify the new assay format and compare the results obtained from conventional icELISA and simplified icELISA. The results indicated that, under optimized conditions, the new assay offered several advantages over the conventional icELISA, which are simpler, less time consuming and higher sensitive although it requires more amount of reagents. The assay sensitivity (IC"5"0) was improved for 1.2-1.4-fold. Four licorice roots samples were analyzed by conventional icELISA and simplified icELISA, as well as liquid chromatography (LC). There was no significant difference among the content obtained from the three methods for each sample. The correlation between data obtained from conventional icELISA and simplified icELISA analyses was 0.9888. The results suggest that the simplified icELISA be useful for high throughput screening of small molecules.

Customer Reviews:
Good for Multipitch and Beginner Big Wallers.......2007-03-08
Chapters are easy to read...color yes color pictures give clear examples of setups! Great book to review multipitch techniques and big wall climbing alike!
bigwall climbing is so simple..........2006-07-30
I've read this book and the old one by Johns Long and Middendorf. While L/M have some charming line drawings with people who look like Keith Richards, it doesn't go into the same depth as Ogden's work. There are great photographs of people clipping in aiders, hauling, jumarring, etcetera. Also some illustrations that can make the trickier points of big wall climbing clear.
Ogden also shares some good general points on multipitch climbs, like how to make quick transitions at belays using two Reversos. Most climbers do stuff like this from experience and the need for efficiency, but Ogden puts it all into his book. He also gives good tips on variations of big wall technique, like climbing with three parties. This book also has some of the best, clearest illustrations of various mechanical advantage systems for hauling or rescue.
Good work, JO!

A great book for English Composition Students.......1999-11-10
A great book with easy to understand text for the college freshman composition student. A little humor is tossed in here and there which makes the reading a lot less dry than other composition books. There is a slight feminist tone to some of the english usage instruction, as well as to some of the examples and topic ideas. At times, it seems that Jean Wyrick is trying to toss out some of her personal opinions by using them as examples in the text. However, it is a GREAT book and serves its purpose well!

Book Description
The annual Spike & Mike Festival of Animation, now celebrating its 25th anniversary, is the leading venue for the underground animation movement and has helped launch the careers of talents such as Nick Park and Peter Lord of Aardman (Wallace & Gromit; Chicken Run), John Lasseter (Toy Story; Monsters, Inc.), Craig McCracken (Powerpuff Girls), Mike Judge (Beavis and Butt-head), and many other cutting-edge filmmakers. In this first-ever survey of the festival's influential work, animation historian Jerry Beck traces the evolution of the festival from a rock concert "filler" to its own arena-sized event that now attracts half a million "toonheads" yearly.
This fun, irreverent volume is lavishly illustrated with frame grabs, rare production stills, original artwork, and behind-the-scenes photographs, and features interviews with a number of the top underground animators.

a missed opportunity.......2004-03-19
As much as I like Jerry Beck I wish he hadn't sold himself out with this overly sanitized "Spike and Mike approved" version of their festival's history. Here we just get an extended regurgitation of Spike and Mike's self glorifying press release along with many pretty photographs. I used to attend this festival in my college days and have friends who've worked behind the scenes, so I really wished this book showed some actual guts. Where's the sex and the drugs and the seedy backstage goings-on at the festival? Why is there no mention of the festival's universal stunning decline in quality in recent years? Why is there no accounting for all the animators that allegedly refuse to submit work to, much less even speak to, this festival anymore? That's the book I'm still waiting to read! If you're a casual fan not interested in animation history and just want to look at pictures, I guess this book would be for you though.
Hurrah for Spike and Mike.......2004-01-22
Usually animation books tend to focus upon the producers of animation - the Disneys, the Joneses and the Freelings. But little, except for a few videos and DVDs has focused upon the work of promoters. This book lovingly pays tribute to Spike Decker and Mike Gribble - two men who are probably the most responsible for the reemergence of short animation in a world that had been stupefied by the pap that was passing for Saturday morning cartoons. The book is divided into three neat sections. First a history of Spike, Mike and their Festivals of Animation sets the stage and helps show thee pair's growth and influence upon developing animators. Then Beck looks at what he considers the ten best pieces to come out of the festivals. Many of these animators have gone on to become household names producing regular animation shows on the Cartoon Network. He also highlights many of the other animators by showing off numerous still shots of their work. Finally for the third part he lets the animators speak for themselves, interviewing them on Spike and Mike, and the pair's role in nurturing emerging animators. This is a fascinating book for any fan of modern animation, especially those of us lucky enough to have seen many of the Spike & Mike Festivals. It is sad that we have lost Mike Gribble, but this book shows that his legacy lives on and continues to grow beyond Spike and Mike's wildest dreams.
