The onset of globalization and the aging of populations have encouraged efforts to privatize the funding of retirement, putting at risk public pensions in many countries and giving pension and insurance funds great financial power. Private funds enjoy vital public subsidy, in the shape of major tax breaks, yet typically fail to give their policyholders a say, or subscribe to wider social objectives. Banking on Death traces the history of pension provision across the advanced capitalist world. It concludes that tax concessions should be confined to those funds which adhere to socially committed and sustainable investment programs, preferably on a not-for-profit basis. Blackburn offers a lucid survey of the debates on the future of social security in the United States and the struggles over pension provision in Britain , France and Germany. At once radical and realistic his analysis shows how gray capitalism could be transformed in pursuit of progressive goals.

This is an immaculately researched book on the history, theory, and politics of pensions, private and public. It will be an important reference point for many years; the 'old-age crisis' is not likely to recede in importance. The book presents recent debates about Social Security fairly, and with sophistication. It describes the operation of 'gray capital' which arises from what economists call information asymmetries between owners and managers of capital. Readers will find stimulating its proposal for the socialisation of pension funds using a share levy as a source of finance. The writing is somewhat terse and dry, but always to the point

Sustainability is an important issue in the development debate but there is little consensus regarding what sustainable development really means and how its attainment can be evaluated. This book attempts to address the question of how the sustainability of agriculture could be assessed; the idea is then applied and analyzed in the case of a river watershed in Costa Rica. The sustainability of agriculture is described by indicators at the plot-, farm- and watershed-level. Reference values are determined which allow the measurement of changes in the indicator values caused by current land use. Multivariate statistical procedures and the assessment of frontier production functions for the principal crops are the main instruments of the empirical analysis. Furthermore, economic social and environmental indicators are aggregated to a "sustainability index" at the farm level in order to allow for comparison between farms. Policy options and possible interventions for the improvement of sustainability are then discussed and the study concludes with the lessons learned and suggestions for further research.

Great Adventure Read.......2004-11-06

I don't read a great deal of adventure/travel writing, but Simon Chapman's The Monster of the Madidi is a fantastic romp through the jungles of Bolivia. The premise of the trip is a search for the legendary DeLoys' ape, of which we have only a photo from the 1920s and plenty of local accounts of its reality. I won't reveal if Simon found the ape, but the story of the search makes great reading full of log jams, murky jungles, "hostile" locals, inept flight officials, screaming monkeys, hitch hiking Australians, and--well you get the picture. A fun read.

An amazing reference book filled with close to 200 pages of text, maps, charts and photos. Designed for the intermediate to more advanced angler (although many fundamentals are covered as well). Dozens of waterways throughout the area are featured. Truly a must have reference book for any fly-fishing enthusiast looking to fish the Smoky Mountain area.

Essential for any serious French student.......2006-03-12

This was the dictionary required by my Intermediate French II class. The definitions are all in French, which can be daunting at first but ultimately helps you learn to think in French. I still use an English-French dictionary for translation from English to French, and there are times when you really just need to get the English equivalent of a French word quickly: knowing that "if" in French is "yew" in English is much more useful than "arbre a fruits rouges, decoratifs". The definitions are expansive, the pronunciation is noted in IPA for each word, and you often end up learning synonyms and other related vocabulary.

I spent a year in France, studying at the university level. My grammar and writing professors both agreed on one thing : Le Robert (even the Micro version, which I have) is the best it gets. It's written entirely in French (which is good...learners of the language should wean themselves off the English-translation method as early as possible) and is so clear-cut and simply written that you'll forget you're reading in a different language. A definite must-have for anyone serious about learning French !

you will do better to stick with a large en-fr fr-en dictionary that does a good job of indicating false cognents between the two languages and later on buying "le petit robert". i recommend the pc format if you envision using it more at your computer as i tend to. the paper format of "le petit robert" uses paper with poor opacity and a bad font. hope this advice helps! bye friends

The best of many western books on this subject.......2003-02-24

I have been teaching and practicing this artform (Chinese Brush Painting) for about 5 years and have found this among the very best of the available books on the subject. Ms. Frame takes us through the basics, with descriptions of the materials and brushstrokes that one can actually follow and put into practice -all the time keeping true to the tradition. She then takes us beyond the basics with lovely projects incorporating colour along with the ink. I would highly recommend this book along with Ning Yeh's instruction books and videos for anyone seriously interested in learning the techniques of this beautiful artform.

This book is is a highly practical and useful book for people trying to gain the upper hand and deal more successfully with difficult and miserable people, customers, family, etc.

Not only does the author provide an understanding of why people behave as they do, he provides lists of behaviors that will help and lists of behaviors that one should avoid if one wants to be effective in handling complaints, problems, etc.

There are even photos in the book that interpret body language! Another nice feature are the boxed summaries and bulleted points.
