Book Description
Being Is Enough emphasizes that America's have all you can have economy, which many now regard as unsustainable, is the result of our be all you can be culture. And our cultural imperative suggesting that humans must always be more is not only the social root of humanity's environmental crisis, but also the cause of personal stress.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Sustainable Philosophy.......2006-02-22
`Being Is Enough' by Dr. Doug Brown is the only economics book that I finished reading in only two days. Once picked up, it's a difficult book to put down. Brown writes in an engaging non-technical style. In this short and very readable sequel to his `Insatiable Is Not Sustainable', the author confronts, from an economic perspective, the most important issue of the day, the recognition of our insatiable civilization of global proportions.
I found Brown's approach to global issues to be especially relevant, for I believe that `economics' is the ultimate valuation of things in the present global civilization. So, by tackling the problem of an insatiable "be all you can be" culture from an economic perspective, Brown is taking the bull by the horns. He shows that solutions can be compatible with economic self-interest, which in our civilization, represents "the bottom line". However, we will have to revolutionize our understanding of self-interest along sustainable lines. For ecologists, sociologists, activists, and victims of globalization who oppose the economic system's inherent injustices will only achieve marginal success until they can demonstrate that the most reasonable economic philosophy necessitates a change in the system's core perception around sustainability.
This thought-provoking book presents a strong argument for people to help transform the economic system of insatiability to a sustainable economy. Not only does the book provide the historical and philosophical arguments for why the system must change, but it also offers sound and genuinely workable solutions as coming from a shift in perception, the core value that `Being Is Enough'. This perception is applicable to people at the personal, grass roots, and corporate level. Important and provocative, `Being Is Enough' offers a hopeful alternative to our ultimately self-destructive cultural worldview. I highly recommend this book.

Book Description
Proven tools for ensuring reenginering success! Why do some reengineering efforts succeed while others fail? Famed consulting firm Coopers & Lybrand recently conducted an in-depth survey that sought to resolve this frustrating question. Based on their blue-chip research, Best Practices in Reengineering, by C&L's David K. Carr and Henry J. Johansson, details the turnaround strategies that have boosted performance at such major companies as Aetna, Ford, and FedEx--and also spells out why reengineering attempts so often go wrong. Here's a complete, easy-to-follow assessment of every key planning and control aspect of reengineering, including: the how and why of team building; process selecting and visioning; managing change; using tools; building links to business strategy; assessing the competition; listening to customers; much more.

Sorting Wheat from Chaff in the Re-engineering craze.......2006-01-26
Improve the effectiveness of your reengineering efforts by creating transparency about the process throughout the firm, communicating effectively, selecting the best processes for reengineering and following other best practices.
By some estimates, two out of three attempts to reengineer companies fail to deliver the expected results. There are many ways to go wrong in the reengineering process, including incomplete communication, flagging managerial support and attempting to reengineer too many processes at once. The authors of this book studied the successful efforts of forty-seven companies to discover what they had done right. Out of their research, they have compiled a compelling list of best practices to guide a reengineering effort. Below is a sample of their best practice rules:
· Recognize and articulate an "extremely compelling" need to change. This could include a need to become more competitive, gain market share, or adapt to regulatory changes.
· Begin with and maintain top-level management support. Executives must have a commitment to the reengineering effort in order to carry the vision into day-to-day operations.
· Understand the firm's readiness to change. Make plans to face resistance to change.
· Communicate effectively to create buy-in. Don't let your employees find out about changes through the rumor mill. Create transparency in the change process.

Book Description
Behavioral Neurobiology provides a novel treatment of the neural basis of behavior. The pedagogical premise of the book is that general insights into the neuronal organization of behavior can be gained by examining neural solutions that have evolved in animals to solve problems encountered in their particular environmental niches. Therefore, rather than organizing the chapters around general themes, such as "Motor Systems" or "Learning and Memory," the author presents in-depth "case studies" of individual animals; themes clearly emerge, but take on additional meaning by being considered in a real-world behavioral context.
While each chapter focuses on the world of a single animal, chapters are clustered into three major thematic sections: Sensory Worlds, Motor Strategies, and Behavioral Plasticity. At the end of each section is a "Coda" highlighting general principles of neuronal organization common to the chapters within it.
In writing the book, Dr. Carew has drawn on his many years of undergraduate teaching at Yale University. Behavioral Neurobiology does not presume a strong biological background, and is therefore suitable for a general undergraduate audience. However, the material is treated in sufficient depth to make the book useful for advanced undergraduate and graduate courses in behavioral neurobiology or neuroethology as well.

What can animals teach humans? Everything, writes the environmental philosopher Paul Shepard, and he's not being hyperbolic. In Shepard's view, it was through the observation and emulation of animals that humans developed their abilities to communicate. The development of the brain and larynx depended on accidents of biology, on bipedalism and upright posture. But more, their development both hinged on and reinforced the desire of humans to communicate with each other, and to members of other species, about their existence in the world; as Shepard writes of one particular human mental skill, "grouping and categorizing is not something done by children simply because their biology requires it, but because the real animal world of each child is to be his concrete model of reality." The natural world, in other words, teaches us to think.
All human culture, in Shepard's view, rests on our natural history, and the separation that has occurred over the generations between humans and the natural environment is to our detriment. Shepard imagines a future in which animals no longer have a place, their role in the world having been assumed by human inventions. Scholarly without ever being pedantic, Shepard offers a powerful argument for conservation and preservation. Thinking Animals, like many of Shepard's books, has come to be a key text in the literature of the animal rights movement and of environmentalism generally, and it is endlessly stimulating. --Gregory McNamee
Customer Reviews:
The most profound book I have ever read.......2006-03-28
...in forty years of relentless reading. We have all seen the evidence of subjects driven mad by sensory deprivation. We know that the health of an individual is tied up with the health of the community. Shepard gives us a glimpse of the myriad ways in which the mental health of our species is tied up with the interspecies conversations that produced our consciousness. To vastly oversimplify his synthesis of anthropological, biological, and cultural sources, Shepard's thesis is that the only argument that can possibly save wild animals and the environments upon which they survive is this: that without them we will destroy that heritage of which we are most proud: our human consciousness. The arguments are expanded in his other work, and I keep meaning to read them-as soon as I have absorbed this one. I've been rereading it for 20 years.
Paul Shepard's Thinking Animals.......1999-12-02
The original edition of this book was published by The Viking Press in 1978 (I know, because I was its editor), and a very important book it is. I'm delighted to see it back in print, because it got little attention when it first appeared. Few scientists then believed in the importance of animals to the development of human intelligence; now the subject of animal intelligence itself is taken far more seriously, and I'm certain that Paul Shepard's work made a significant contribution to this change.

After decades of abuse and spittle, Major League umpire Durwood Merrill strikes back with some pretty incisive, funny, and no-holds-barred anecdotes. When his book stays in the game, it's a real hoot, light and folksy; how can you not laugh with a guy who can admit that "Folks around the American League say I've sent a few pitchers to the Hall of Fame before their time because my strike zone tends to swell like George Steinbrenner's ego"? It's his own ego, though, that has him swinging for the seats and coming up short; he's not much of a memoirist. Thankfully, like a good umpire, he keeps his personal interference to a minimum and mostly sticks to business, offering some tough prescriptions for what ails the game, and some solid dissection of the intricacies of his craft. His thoughts on Pete Rose might lead you to believe that Charlie Hustle is the book's title character. -- Jeff Silverman, Sports editor

Customer Reviews:
A nice guy.......2007-09-10
I expected a little more humor from this book judging from the title. However it was still quite interesting. It was nice to read how he worked so hard for those less fortunate. Seemed like he was a guy I would have liked to have had as a friend.
You can't write and your publisher stinks too........2004-02-17
Somebody messed up badly. Being an amateur baseball umpire I am biased towards umpires in general and those in baseball in particular but Merrill does not do himself and his profession justice. The ghostwriter, assuming there was one, must have been drunk and illiterate and the publisher too lazy, or do we call that cost conscious, to proof read the manuscript. I ended up reading a book that should not have been published and does not do justice to a man who became an umpire in a different and much tougher era. The book does not do him justice, god rest his soul. Maybe the publisher could be so kind and honor him with and revised edition.
Some very funny stories, and some that are serious, too........2003-09-11
When I first bought this book, I wasn't quite sure what to think. I had heard a few negative things about it, and kind of had a prejudice against it. Boy, was that wrong! I found this to be a very funny, lighthearted read (for the most part). There's some really wonderful insights into what it takes to become a big league umpire - never quite realized all they went through in "Umpire boot camp" (my term). It's not all fun and games, there's a few stories about how an umpire friend of his was attacked and crippled on the streets of Dallas, and the latter part talks a lot about his charity works.
A great book - funny, light, and to be honest, something that surprised me in a very good way. What was personally annoying was that after I read this (during the last month of the 99 season), I wanted to watch Durwood, and then he up and retires during the playoffs (and then died a short time later). Damn. Really wanted to see him after reading his book. Oh well. Check it out, a good light read.
RIP Durwood.......2003-01-13
Durwood Merrill just passed away today, after suffering a heart attack last Sunday. Godspeed, Durwood.
You'll hesitate the next time you "boo" an umpire..............2002-08-15
It's a light read, but Durwood is very colorful and sincere in his writing. I felt as if he was my Grandpa sitting next to me telling me these wonderfull stories. You'll enjoy it even if you're not a baseball fan.
If you ARE a baseball fan. You'll hesitate the next time you "boo" an umpire at a game. (but only for a second or two)

Still a good introduction to writing for Greeting Cards.......2007-03-28
While written in 1992, this is still a solid introduction to freelance writing for the "social expression" market. With first hand experience, the author gives very useful information and examples for writing and selling greeting cards and related items. It's well worth the read.
Good information.......2003-08-08
Pretty good book that isn't too hard to read & understand.
Look for me at Hallmark.......2002-11-15
Just kidding. You won't find my cards at Hallmark.
This is a great book for people who love greeting cards. I feel so stupid when I'm at the store by myself and other people are around and I start laughing at a card. They just stare at me and wish their card was so funny. But I am easily humored. If you are creative, this is a great book. She gives you ideas and tips, but doesn't do it all for you. She leaves room for your creativity.
A book worth a look.......2001-02-19
I am a greeting card designer and writer. Molly's book sometimes states the obvious in her suggestions for creating greeting cards, but when are looking for the millioneth way of wishing someone a happy birthday, that can be helpful. She walks you through brainstorming and I have to say has enabled me a very fresh thought process for coming up with card copy. It's as though she is happy to share the "secrets" of the trade for creating cards. This is one funky business to learn about. It's not like there are college courses on how to succeed in the card business. It's all about observing what's out there and really searching for professinals who are willing to share insights, tips and suggestions and hard facts for succeeding and I think this book does all of that!
Not what I thought it would be.......2000-03-11
I was quite disappointed with this book in that it was extremely limited in its topics. It was very thorough in its explanation of different writing styles and formats, but it barely discussed the marketing side of it...payment standards, format for submissions. I would have liked this section to be more than just a few pages(out of almost 200), and also for them to have included a little bit on basic overall card design (many of us do both the writing and illustrating).
This book is not an end-all resource on breaking into the greeting card industry, but it is a good place to go if having trouble coming up with ideas.

Book Description
Created between the seventh and ninth centuries AD, The Book of Kells is one of the great cultural icons of the medieval West. In the past, it has received a great deal of popular and scholarly attention, but only recently has its labyrinth of meaning and references begun to be explored.
In "The Book of Kells: Its Function and Audience," Carol Ann Farr builds on the work of liturgists, palaeographers, historians, and art historians to go beyond basic analysis to place The Book of Kells in the wider context of use and audience.
Farr situates The Book of Kells as part of an evangelical tradition that used the physical appearance of the gospels as a tool of conversion. By examining the manuscript in its political, social, historical, and religious contexts, she provides a fresh perspective on this most famous of insular illuminated texts. In particular, Farr offers new and convincing readings of two of the most difficult images, the 'Temptation' and so-called 'Arrest'.

Book Description
Much recent economic analysis has been devoted to exploring the effects of internationalization on macroeconomic policy options, national competitiveness, and rewards to various factors of production. The central proposition of this volume is that we can no longer understand politics within countries without comprehending the nature of the linkages between national economies and the world economy, and changes in such linkages. The authors examine the effect of internationalization on the policy preferences of socioeconomic and political agents within countries toward national policies and national policy-making institutions and on the national policies and policy institutions themselves.
Customer Reviews:
A insightful work of emerging agenda: Internationalization.......2000-05-13
Robert O. Keohane and Helen V. Milner, editors of "Internationalization and Domestic Politics", written in 1996, are one of the most intelligent International Relations scholars today. This book focuses on the enormous effect of internationalization on domestic politics; changes of national economic policies, institutional and political changes within a nation, and changes of the attitude of socio-economic interest group toward national economic policy. Then they apply their theoretical hypothesis to the United States, Japan, Russia, China, and a few developing countries. Besides validity of their hypothesis, this book proposes a great insight into the global phenomenon, internationalization, and shows how each country¡¯s national economic policies converge on global level. "A candid analysis of internationalization" - that is enough for my impression.

Book Description
Until recently, many Japanese believed that they lived in the richest country in the world, and in the early 1990s, they welcomed the end of one-party dominance. However, by the middle of the 1990s, many Japanese are no longer confident in their economy, nor optimistic in their politics. This authoritative study analyses various aspects of Japanese society and economy in order to provide a balanced view between the optimism of the 1980s and the pessimism characteristic of more recent years. The Political Economy of Japanese Society is a revision and translation of a multidisciplinary research project carried out by the Institute of Social Science at the University of Tokyo. Beginning with the late nineteenth century, it examines the historical developments of Japan's contemporary political economy, paying particular attention to the changes that have occurred 'from below'. Social actors who have often been given peripheral treatment, such as opposition parties, the aged, female workers and foreign workers, are brought to the forefront of the analysis, alongside those considered more mainstream, such as the governing party, large corporations and labour unions. The Japanese political economy of the 1980s and 90s has had a strong impact on the global economy, and this book also analyses selective influences on the outside world, in particular on other Asian nations and the USA. Volume 1 analyses the structures of the Japanese political economy which encouraged continuous economic growth in the period from 1955 to 1990, focusing on such phenomena as Japanese political management, the Japanese employment system, and one-party dominance in politics. Volume 2 examines some of the problems inherited from this period of dramatic economic growth.

Book Description
Ray presents a comprehensive review of U.S. trade policy since World War II, with particular emphasis on how that policy has affected developing countries. Special attention is given to trade policy shifts in the last twenty years in an attempt to determine whether or not U.S. trade concessions to developing countries contribute positively to their efforts to meet their considerable debt obligations. The author combines theoretical discussion with empirical data drawn from the seven leading debtor nations--Argentina, Brazil, Indonesia, Korea, Mexico, the Philippines, and Venezuela--in a provocative examination of the economic and sociopolitical causes and implications of changes in protectionism and the pattern of tariff and nontariff trade barriers in the last few decades. Following an introductory analysis of the history of protectionism in the United States, Ray explores the role of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) after World War II in eliminating protection and the impact on developing countries of the changes in tariffs and in the use of nontariff trade barriers under the auspices of GATT. Subsequent chapters deal with such issues as the reasons for the adoption of the Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) adopted in 1975, the relationship between U.S. trade policies since 1975 and the world debt crisis, the reasons behind the adoption of the Caribbean Basin Initiative in 1983, and the 1985 revision of the GSP. A separate empirical chapter assesses the effects of the new GSP legislation on exports to the United States from developing countries in general and from the severely indebted seven in particular. The final chapter is organized around three major themes: the future course of U.S. trade policy, the likely impact of the U.S.-Canada Free Trade Agreement on the United States and Canada, and the Uruguay Round negotiations and the implications of the Omnibus Trade and Competitiveness Act of 1988 on trade between the United States and the debtor nations. Students of international business, international politics, and economic development will find Ray's analysis of the relationship between trade protectionism and world debt an important contribution to current debates on the causes, effects, and solutions to the Third World debt crisis.
