Dr. Deller also holds joint appointments in the Department of Urban and Regional Planning, the Center for Community Economic Development, and the Center for Local Government and is a community development economist with the University of Wisconsin-Extension. ,

Dave Marcouiller is an Associate Professor in the Department of Urban and Regional Planning at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Dr. Marcouiller also holds joint appointments in the Department of Forest Ecology and Management, the Institute of Environmental Studies, and the Center for Community Economic Development and serves as a resource economist with the University of Wisconsin-Extension.

A thorough grounding in statistics is necessary for a career in any experimental science, but many students find themselves intimidated by the subject. Hampton and Havel have written this text with these students in mind. Great Stats Intro!.......2003-05-09

If you're new to stats, or just keep forgetting the definition of chi squared, this is the book for you. Easy to read, good worked examples - both parametric and non-parametric (the autor will tell you what those are if you don't already know).
I use to borrow my roommates - now I'm buying my own as a handy reference.
NB. Does not go into a lot of detail of derivation.

I refer to this book often. I wish there was a current edition since the stats end in 2000. The stories of the top 100 Yankees are very interesting.

Do you have a baseball enthusiast in the house? If so, this work
would make a perfect gift. For each opening day, there is a
description together with the name of the person who threw out the ball on that day. Complete batting statistics are provided together with the major positions and accompanying players. This book would put you in a preferred position to quote valuable statistics-no matter how remote or obscure. The dynamics of the competition between Gehrig and DiMaggio is depicted for the few seasons that they played together. The work is a must read for the baseball enthusiast in your house. It is a solid value for the price charged. The research alone would be very costly to
replicate, if you had the time to make an honest attempt.

Pass on this book. Although not everyone can tour Yankee Stadium and ask any question they like (and get very good answers), I expected a lot when I looked at the table of contents for the first section. Unfortunately, the answers are skimpy and insufficient, especially considering that the subtitle claims to be "the total encyclopedia of the team". Not hardly. The latter section of statistics may be useless, dated or just good for historical purposes. I would pass.

Great gift for all yankee fans.......2001-05-23

This great volume has a history of the Yankees, profiles of great players, stories of great moments in team history, etc. It is loaded with trivia and team records. It also has the complete career stats for everyone who has ever worn a Yankee uniform. Even if someone had a great career for another team, if he briefly played for the Yankees, his entire major league stats are included and the stats which pertain to the games he played as a Yankee are printed in bold type. If there was a fairly obscure player who you recall from a Yankee team years ago, his stats are there. This book is loaded with great information and you will spend many enjoyable hours leafing through it.

Con's: Paper construction is not conducive to carrying in bookbag or pocket; needs to be laminated, made of plastic, or to come with hard carrying case.

A great aid to begin learning a good slew of Japanese verbs.......2003-06-17

These Language Express Cards contain 105 different Japanese verbs on 105 numbered cards about 2" by 1.5". They have holes punched top and center and come on metal rings that can be opened to allow you to remove, shuffle or organize the cards as needed. On the front is a small cartoon image, and the English verb. On the rear is the Indicative, -masu, and -te forms of the verb with Kanji/katakana written underneath, and the card number (sometimes a negative form of the verb is thrown on as well).

Using these cards is convenient. Once learning these 105 verbs, you get the hang of basic Japanese verbs to allow you to approach conjugation and wider vocabulary studies in other books centered on broader rules of japanese verbs.

On the surface, this seemed like a cheap little set of flash cards to help me learn Japanese. When I got the cards I was amazed! They are hole-punched and on 2 easily opened keyrings. The set also included 2 bookmark cards. The cards show both translation and the pen stroke. They are even numbered so that you can shuffel them yet retain the original order! They thought of everything... A+A+A+

I can't recommend these highly enough.......2001-07-19

if you are trying to study Japanese and you're not in Japan, you know that the odds are stacked against you - without hearing it constantly, and reading it everywhere, the learning process is much more arduous. Well, imagine having these little cards that you can carry ANYWHERE because they're so small and are conveniently bound together with a steel keyring! They even have durable plastic covers to keep the face and front cards from getting grungy. If you carry these cards around, glancing at them while waiting for a train, standing on line at the supermarket, or between commercials, I GUARANTEE you'll pick up three or four - at the bare minimum - vocabulary words every day. Let that sink in, then buy these cards while you can. Why couldn't the Tuttle kanji cards have been presented so neatly?

Learning Kana with Cards.......2000-08-08

My first reaction when I saw the package was, "Can they be that small?" Yes! They are small, and a full set of the 51 cards (each of the two alphabets contains 51 cards) fits nicely into my pocket without a huge bulge or weight. In just three days, I've gotten half the harikana memorized and expect that I will be done by the end of the week and ready to start on the next set. I love the convienience of having them always there, ready to use in those wasted minutes in lines and waiting rooms.

The characters on the cards are done in very nice calligraphy, which doesn't always match what you will find in printed material. The only negative comment is that the characters formed with the addition of dots or circles (I don't remember the official name!) are lumped five to a card. Simple and easy to use, the ring allows you to re-order the cards so that you don't memorize the actual sequences.

Great Deck.......2007-08-23

I had to take a katakana quiz the third day of class and I strongly beleive this is a must have because some of the katakana are hard to duplicate when you haven't been taught to write them correctly or when it takes you awhile to get it right. The small differences make it frustrating. With these cards you can be sure what your looking at is the right thing. They're also wonderful for people like me who have really bad handwriting.

These cards were a great resorce to me, it provides exelent help and prevents you from having to write the kana your self and studying the wrong thing. I would recomend these to anyone who wants to lean kana.

Description:
This study investigated inhibitory function in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) by recording event-related brain potentials (ERPs) during a Go/NoGo task. Fourteen healthy volunteers and 13 patients with PD without dementia performed a cued continuous performance test that included Go and NoGo trials. The peak latency, amplitude, and topographic distributions of the ERPs to Go and NoGo stimuli were analyzed. Cognitive function was evaluated using the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST), Kana Pick-out Test, and Verbal Fluency Test (VFT). Performances in the WCST and VFT were significantly impaired in the PD group as compared with the control group. The PD group had significantly higher rates of omission and commission errors during the ERP task. The ERP study found no differences in the latency and amplitude of the Go-P3 between the two groups. By contrast, the NoGo-P3 latency was significantly longer in the PD group than in the control group. The amplitudes of the NoGo-P3 and NoGo-N2 were also significantly smaller in the PD group than in the control group. The NoGo-P3 latency was significantly correlated with the Kana Pick-out Test and VFT scores. The NoGo-P3 amplitude was significantly correlated with the WCST and VFT scores, as well as with the number of commission errors. There were no significant correlations between the cognitive function tests and either the Go-P3 or NoGo-N2 measures. The behavioral and ERP data suggest that there is selective impairment of inhibitory function in PD and that this deficit may be related to impaired inhibitory executive function in the frontal lobe.

Beautiful, inspirational.......2004-01-02

Letters of Gold is one of the most beautiful and informative books on Arabic calligraphy (khatt) I know. Ottoman calligraphy naturally strongly influenced calligraphy throughout the Islamic world, and in Arabic-speaking countries in particular. Certainly my two calligraphy teachers in the U.A.E. and Damascus had the highest regard for Turkish caligraphers.

As to the book, the introduction is the best I've ever seen: it covers the development of scripts, equipment and techniques, composition of pieces and concludes with a piece on the training of a scribe. All this is done with constant reference to the 71 examples in the book. The samples themselves are not, as so often in Western books on Islamic calligraphy, selected miniatures, but instead are frequently pages in the body of a work rather than merely ornate headings. It is possible, therefore, to concentrate on the khatt itself rather than the work of the anciliary craftsmen. The reproduction is excellent. Each piece of khatt has a facing-page biographical outline of the author and a small commentary on the khatt itself. Works range from the late fifteenth to the late twentieth centuries.

Terms are naturally presented in their Turkish form, so Arabists may need to guess the Arabic spelling of the word - it's not hard (h = h/H/kh, k = k/q, s = s/S/th, final Arabic b/d can become p/t). There's a glossary and a bibliography of works in English and Turkish. Anything else? I'd recomend the hardback edition.

Caligraphy, fancy the pen........1998-12-11

This is a well presented work explaining the art of caligraphy as well as presenting the marvelous pieces from the Sabanci Collection which have also toured the Met.
