Book Description

The markets dealing with financial products related to credit risk have been booming over the last years. This has encouraged practitioners and academics at the same time to consider and develop sophisticated models for credit risk pricing. This book gives a deep insight into the latest basic and advanced credit risk modelling techniques covering not only the standard structural, reduced form and hybrid approaches but also showing how these methods can be applied to practice. Therefore, questions like the choice of an appropriate model, suitable parameter estimation and calibration techniques as well as back-testing issues are addressed. The book covers a broad range of financial instruments such as all kinds of defaultable fixed and floating rate debt, credit derivatives and collateralised debt obligations. In addition, there is a special emphasis on the discussion of data issues like the estimation of consistent transition matrices or the modelling of recovery rates. A lot of market data and latest credit market information completes the book. This volume will be a valuable source for the financial community involved in pricing credit linked financial instruments. In addition, the book can be used by students and academics to get a comprehensive overview of the most important credit risk modelling issues.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great Overview of Models but a Little Too Academic.......2002-06-07

This book is an excellent read and should be required reading for any credit trader or risk manager - buy- or sell-side.
The model that is proposed is general enough to be practical but academically rigorous enough to garner respect.
The actual application of the model is a little limited and I lokk forward to further research by the author.
All-in-all - a well structured tour of current models and application of an innovative generalisation of a number of frameworks.

          Book Description

Ecologists are making increasing use of computer methods in analyzing ecological data on plant and animal communities. Ecological problems naturally involve numerous variables and numerous individuals or samples. Multivariate techniques permit the summary of large, complex sets of data and provide the means to tackle many problems that cannot be investigated experimentally because of practical restraints. Ecologists are thus enabled to group similar species and similar sample sites together, and to generate hypotheses about environmental and historical factors that affect the communities. This timely book presents a full critical description of three methodologies - direct gradient analysis, ordination, and classification - from both theoretical and practical viewpoints. Both traditional and new methods are presented. Using a wide range of illustrative examples, Hugh Gauch provides an up-to-date synthesis of this field, which will be of interest to advanced students and ecologists. These mathematical tools are also used in a wide variety of other areas, from natural resource management and agronomy to the social and political sciences.

              Description:
Research to date on effects of fire exclusion in ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa) forests has been limited by narrow geographical focus, by confounding effects due to prior logging at research sites, and by uncertainty from using reconstructions of past conditions to infer changes. For the work presented here, reference stands in unlogged ponderosa pine/Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) forests at seven sites across a broad region of Idaho and Montana were selected for study. Within each site, understory and overstory community structure and composition were surveyed in 2-4 stands exposed to different numbers of fires during the 20th century. Student's t-tests were used to test differences between the most fire-excluded (''unburned'') and the most frequently burned (''burned'') stands across the entire study. Multivariate analyses were used to characterize successional changes resulting from lack of fire. Understory community composition varied from site to site and was not related to fire exposure. However, species richness was higher in unburned stands. Overall tree densities and densities of shade-tolerant tree species increased with the absence of fire. There was a marginally significant association between xeric understories and ponderosa pine dominated overstories and mesic understories and Douglas-fir or grand fir dominated overstories. Our multivariate analysis suggests that while general trajectories of succession with absence of fire may be predictable, the structure and composition of ponderosa pine/Douglas-fir communities across complex landscapes may be difficult to relate to specific exposure to fire or time-since-fire. This study highlights the importance of natural variability and heterogeneity in ponderosa pine/Douglas-fir forests of the inland Northwest, and supports other recent research calling for cautious approaches to restoration in these forests.

                Description:
Many biological data sets, from field observations and manipulative experiments, involve crossed factor designs, analysed in a univariate context by higher-way analyses of variance which partition out 'main' and 'interaction' effects. Indeed, tests for significance of interactions among factors, such as differing Before-After responses at Control and Impact sites, are the basis of the widely used BACI strategy for detecting impacts in the environment. There are difficulties, however, in generalising simple univariate definitions of interaction, from classic linear models, to the robust, non-parametric multivariate methods that are commonly required in handling assemblage data. The size of an interaction term, and even its existence at all, depends crucially on the measurement scale, so it is fundamentally a parametric construct. Despite this, certain forms of interaction can be examined using non-parametric methods, namely those evidenced by changing assemblage patterns over many time periods, for replicate sites from different experimental conditions (types of 'Beyond BACI' design) - or changing multivariate structure over space, at many observed times. Second-stage MDS, which can be thought of as an MDS plot of the pairwise similarities between MDS plots (e.g. of assemblage time trajectories), can be used to illustrate such interactions, and they can be formally tested by second-stage ANOSIM permutation tests. Similarities between (first-stage) multivariate patterns are assessed by rank-based matrix correlations, preserving the fully non-parametric approach common in marine community studies. The method is exemplified using time-series data on corals from Thailand, macrobenthos from Tees Bay, UK, and macroalgae from a complex recolonisation experiment carried out in the Ligurian Sea, Italy. The latter data set is also used to demonstrate how the analysis copes straightforwardly with certain repeated-measures designs.

                  Description:
Earthworm populations were sampled in 19 coniferous or mixed forests in Bavaria. The stands are dominated by Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.), or had been pure Scots pine stands before conversion to mixed stands with the broad-leaved tree species European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.), and/or pedunculate oak (Quercus robur L.) and sessile oak (Quercus petraea (Matt.) Liebl.) was started 14-66 years ago. Based on this survey, we tested whether the introduction of beech and oak into pure pine stands resulted in an altered earthworm community. In addition, we tried to explain the high observed variance in earthworm abundance and biomass by regressing them against the factors extracted by principal component analysis (PCA). The variables included in the PCA comprised soil nutrient concentrations in the Of-layer, stand parameters, annual mean precipitation and temperature, the number of diplopods as potential competitors for food and habitat, the number of invertebrate predators, and the distance to agricultural land and roadside as potential sources of earthworm immigration, respectively. Earthworms were found in each stand; however, the variance in earthworm abundance and biomass both among and within the stands was high. At two out of seven sites where pairwise comparisons between pure and converted stands were possible, significantly higher earthworm abundance and biomass were found in the converted stands. Three additional sites showed a non-significant trend towards more numerous earthworms in stands with introduced broad-leaved tree species. Moreover, at stands with broadleaves there was a shift towards an increased earthworm species diversity. The results of the PCA and subsequent regression analyses showed that the mitigation of soil acidity is the key factor for the enhancement of the epigeic earthworm fauna in Scots pine stands. We concluded that on poor sites the introduction of broadleaves influences the earthworm community positively only if it creates improved habitat conditions by, e.g., altering soil chemical properties. This requires the presence of nutrient-rich horizons in the subsoil, and means that only deep rooting and sufficiently old broad-leaved trees which are able to reach these horizons will result in improved chemical properties of the organic layer. On soils with more favourable conditions where even Scots pine stands contain considerable earthworm densities, the introduction of broad-leaved tree species may lead to a relatively prompt increase in the earthworm community and change in its species composition.

                    Description:
In the course of a 1 year study on agricultural plots (mustard-beet) the impact of organic materials and soil management on soil microbial communities was assessed after amendment with three types of organic materials (sewage sludge, turkey manure and compost made of turkey manure and ligneous waste) and a mineral fertilizer. Transient impacts on potential metabolic activity, on genetic structure and on quantities of soil microorganisms, measured with three different methods (C"m"i"c, total DNA content and CFU enumeration), were observed. The extent of these impacts depended on the composition of the amendment. The proportions of mineralisable carbon and lignin in organic materials seemed to influence the behaviour of the bacterial communities during the first 3 months after amendment. After a period of 6 months, no effect specific to the type of organic materials was detected. The dynamics of microbial biomass was assessed by both microbial carbon and by total DNA, but no correlation was found between the results; DNA seemed to be more sensitive to time-related variations in microbial biomass. Finally, although the bacterial functional and genetic structures were strongly modified between 3 and 6 months, this modification was not related to the type of amendment. This result suggests that organic amendments have less effect than seasonal variations or others anthropic factors such as the mechanical management of the soil.

5 out of 5 stars This book ROCKS!.......2007-03-21

The definitive guide to Central Az. rockclimbing! Building on previous volumes by Jim Waugh, Greg Opland has raised the bar, and taken this guide to new heights. With development threatening many areas in this guidebook, this may well be the last chance to get the 'full scoop' on some of the best winter rockclimbing in the USA! Well written and illustrated, outlying areas have been included once again to help those with a thirst for exploration of some of the fine outlying climbing spots near the Phoenix metropolitan area. This book wins handsdown over the one sheet guides as well as the falcon press 'best of' guides.

Anxiously awaiting this authors effort on a guide to the Supersition Wilderness (if he ever does one!)

5 out of 5 stars All Guide Books Should Be Done This Well.......2002-01-09

Greg Opland has raised the bar on guide book quality. Phoenix Rock II borrows information from older guides to the area, but Greg injects his own attitudes and perspectives, making this truly his own. The topo quality is second to none, a huge leap ahead of the current standard. The history included is invaluable and helps to make the text very readable. Photo quality is excellent. Makes me want to buy a ticket and go to Phoenix to climb right now!

                          Book Description

For climbers who want to make the most of their time on Arizona rock—after work or on a weekend trip

                          · More than 230 trad and sport climbs from 5.0 to 5.10a
                          · Destination chart lists climbing season, climbing type, drive time, and approach times
                          · Topo maps or photos with route overlays for most routes
                          · Climbs indexed by star rating, difficulty, and more

Whether you are an Arizona climber who wants to get out for the weekend or a visiting climber seeking winter sun, this guide will help you make the most of your time on the rock. Most approaches are short, drive times from Flagstaff, Phoenix, and Tucson are noted, and climbs range from a few minutes to a full day. Even better, these routes have been selected for quality of experience, rated on a three-star system.

                          Ten major destinations are covered:
                          Dragoon Mountains Oak Creek Overlook
                          Granite Mountain Pinnacle Peak
                          Jacks Canyon Queen Creek
                          McDowell Mountains Sedona
                          Mount Lemmon Thumb Butte

Multi-pitch granite cracks and slabs, pocketed sport climbs on welded tuff and limestone, hand-friendly basalt cracks and corners, and soaring sandstone spires provide trad and sport climbers with all the variety the sport has to offer. Climbing destinations at elevations as low as 3000 feet and as high as 7000 feet provide escape from winter chill and sanctuary from summer heat. This fantastic climbing unfolds at locations easily accessible from urban areas, yet a world away from the rat race. And it's all enjoyed in a landscape as diverse as it is beautiful: serene pine forests, flower-studded oak woodlands, and saguaro-strewn deserts.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic -- up to date beta for Cochise and Sedona.......2006-12-25

The approach beta in this book for What's My Line and for the Rockfellow formations is better than that found in any other book on the area, including Kerry's book (Backcountry Climbing in Southern Arizona, the acknowledged bible for Cochise). In addition, the updated approach to Warpath, and the inclusion of Sedona routes like the Mace and Four Flying Apaches (another item not found in any other guide) would probably make this a worthwhile purchase for most visitors. Its low price is a huge plus for out-of-state visitors like me who nonetheless don't like to waste time getting hopelessly lost. It covers a lot of routes in a lot of areas within Arizona, more of a sampler than anything else, yet it somehow also manages to pack in a lot of extremely useful and current beta.

My first trip to Cochise was this past week and it was amazing. I don't know if it would have been half as much fun without the guidance of Abbott's book here. The finest route we climbed on, 'Endgame', is a steep, 5 pitch bolted 5.10a that I knew only from magazine photos and scant Internet beta. It's not covered in Abbott's book -- but the approach to the End Pinnacle routes is, paradoxically, better covered in Abbott's book than any of the guides that do have topos for Endgame. (If you want a comprehensive guidebook to Cochise, you need to supplement Kerry's book with the updated approaches found in this book, anyways -- and Kerry's book covers many more obscure crags which will be of keen interest to repeat visitors. Alas, it is out of print -- but the Summit Hut people have a copy which you may be able to Xerox, if you ask nicely.) In any event, once you arrive at the West Stronghold (another handy suggestion from Abbott is to stick with the West Stronghold as your base camp), it is likely that other climbers will be about, so ask them.

If you are planning a road trip to Arizona, this $10 book is a no-brainer.

                                          5 out of 5 stars Very inspirational!.......2007-03-30

This book is awesome! I've been doing calligraphy for over 20 years and own nearly 50 books about calligraphy and i must say, this one is the best EVER. It is so inspirational. Before i bought it, i started taking notes and scanning so many pages that i realized i HAD to buy it because there is so much information and inspiration on each and every single page.

I think this is probably the only callig. book i've ever actually read throroughly, from cover to cover -- literally! I read each page (not just skimmed over, as i have with others), but actually read and took notes on.

I was so inspired by this book that i couldn't wait to get started on my own projects.

thank you, Annie Cicale, for creating this wonderful masterpiece!!!
