Product Description

Crisis Management by Apology: Corporate Response to Allegations of Wrongdoing examines the role of apologia and apology in response to public attack. Author Keith Michael Hearit provides an introduction to these common components of public life, and considers a diverse list of subjects, from public figures and individuals to corporations and institutions. He explores the motivations and rationales behind apologies, and considers the ethics and legal liabilities of these actions. Hearit provides case studies throughout the volume, with many familiar examples from recent events in the United States, and includes an international apology-making case from Japan. The broad-perspective approach of this volume makes the content relevant and appealing to practitioners and scholars in public relations, business communications, and management. It is a valuable text for courses that take a discursive approach to public relations, and it also appeals to readers in business management, examining apology as a response strategy to corporate crises.

          Book Description

Fractal Geometry in Biological Systems was written by the leading experts in the field of mathematics and the biological sciences together. It is intended to inform researchers in the bringing about the fundamental nature of fractals and their widespread appearance in biological systems. The chapters explain how the presence of fractal geometry can be used in an analytical way to predict outcomes in systems, to generate hypotheses, and to help design experiments. The authors make the mathematics accessible to a wide audience and do not assume prior experience in this area.

          Book Description

Gerald Durrell helped establish a model zoo on the Isle of Jersey, an experience that caused him to reconsider the whole question of wild animals in human hands.

"On one level, the book is about zoos. More profoundly, however, THE STATIONARY ARK is about the misuse of wild animals in captivity. Durrell's material reveals a fascinating blind spot in modern zoological thought, namely that we are almost completely ignorant about the important facts of many wild animals' lives." I particularly like Gerald Durrell's books because of his humor. I lent it to my sick friend and she laughed so hard she got better. My mom has to yank it away from me before I listen when she wants something done. I am sure you will buy up the whole series when you read one of his books. Be patient at first and then it gets better.

My daughter just loved this book and the stickers. She would put the animals in different places in the book and then take them off again and put them somewhere else. She was able to do it on her own, which was nice when I wasn't able to do it with her. But when I was able to do it with her, it was a good learning tool. You can teach what different animals are if your child doesn't know all of them, or you can talk about the animals' different environments, as there are scenes of different places in the world, like icy places and the jungle. And, of course, you can use it to teach your child about Noah's ark.

                      Book Description

Every skateboarder wants to have the hottest graphics on his or her board. But the wear and tear of the skater's grind naturally makes it difficult to keep your graphics bold and dynamic. Thus were skateboard stickers born.

Virtually every skateboarder has a sticker collection of some sort, either on a bedroom door or on the refrigerator or in a shoe box. Stickers became extremely important in the late eighties and early nineties when many smaller, skater-owned companies emerged. Thanks to the low cost and ease with which they can be produced, stickers are an easy way to get brands noticed. Virtually every board graphic is also available in sticker form, and with graphics only having a shelf life of around six months, and hundreds of companies and thousands of boards available, it's easy to see why they are so collectable.

Skateboard Stickers celebrates the use of stickers in skateboarding. Showing the full spectrum of skate sticker art, it brings together over 350 of the most memorable stickers ever produced. From Wes Humpston and Dogtown's stickers in the 1970s to Birdo at Consolidated's 'Don't Do It' sticker campaign, the book features the best designs, selected by pro skateboarders past and present, skate artists and other influential figures in the skate industry around the world. It includes sticker related stories and articles from skaters and artists, such as the story of Death skateboards or Jim Phillips' legendary Screaming Hand sticker logo for Speed Wheels Santa Cruz, as well as a look at the sticker-making process, and quotes from skateboarders describing what stickers mean to them personally. Contributors include Wes Humpston, Bucky Lasek, Sean Goff, Steve Alba, Andy Howell, Mark McKee, Jim Phillips, and Mike Vallely.

Bonus feature: each book is packaged with a new skateboard sticker, commissioned especially for this volume.

                      Book Description

This combination rhetoric/reader helps readers develop strategies for critical reading, critical thinking, research, and writing that will help them argue clearly and convincingly. It teaches them to identify and develop arguments, to read and form reactions and opinions of their own, to analyze an audience, to seek common ground, and to use a wide, realistic range of techniques to write argument papers that express their individual views and original perspectives on modern issues. The Rhetoric portion includes clear explanations and examples of argument theory and reading and writing processes, research and documentation skills, and offers engaging, class-tested writing assignments and activities. The Reader portion includes 75 reading selections covering seven broad issue areas and 18 more focused areas, all of contemporary concern. Unique chapters discuss argument styles, Rogerian argument, and argument and literature. Material covered includes engaging with argument for reading and writing, understanding the nature of argument for reading and writing, writing a research paper that presents an argument and visual and oral argument. Readings cover a range of issues including those concerning families and relationships, education, crime and the treatment of criminals, race, culture and identity, freedom, war and issues concerning the future. For anyone interested in a clear presentation of argument theory applied to written, visual and oral forms.

The basics of academic writing are fairly straightforward. We need clear reasoning, hence a clear explanation of the basics of logic and of fallacies. We need to explain to students how to select research materials, how to distinguish trade books from academically kosher texts, and so on. And we also need an efficient writing guide that addresses these issues. This is not such a text.
Firstly, the text gives thin and often confusing advice on logic. Where Wood discusses critical thinking and fallacies, the explanations are very short (just five pages of a 750 page text concern fallacies, for example) and there are no real- world examples of the fallacies discussed. As such, the relevance of basic logic to the art of critical reading is not really obvious to the novice. This is bizarre, given that many of the (non- academic) reading examples in the text(such as Rush Limbaugh on 'femi-Nazis') are basically wall to wall fallacious, and much of the right wing conservative nonsense in the text's reading section is simply not diagnosed as such. Further, Wood's explanations of basic logical concepts are inexplicably confused- she gets inductive and deductive logic quite the wrong way around (p.201)- an error that would get any critical thinking tutor fired. This paucity of clarity is evident in some truly shocking advice given the student: advice that rather rejects the whole principle of research and cogent argumentation in the name of some muddled epistemic relativism that holds that everyone has a unique perspective that deserves respect. In particular, she advises authors to not clearly articulate their arguments for a given proposition because "a stated warrant [premise] negates the rich and varied perceptions and responses of the audience by providing only the author's interpretation and articulation of the warrant" (p.139). This emphasis on such irrelevant issues as 'establishing common ground'and 'establishing the rhetorical situation' makes much of the text worse than useless in trying to teach what college writing entails and requires. In suggesting that the misreadings of the reader are more important than clearly articulating one's own argument, Wood is, quite frankly, talking rubbish.
The text does include some solid examples of argumentative writing (such as Martin Luther King Jr's "Letter from Birmingham Jail") but there is no real explanation as to why such texts are persuasive without being fallacious. Further, many of the better essays in the text are far more sophisticated than the body text, making the overall work feel quite unbalanced.

This is probably the essential reference for calligraphers wanting to move beyond writing on paper and with randomly purchased inks.

Most books on calligraphy technique are largely devoted to lettering guides and some minimal instruction on materials. Not this one! The book contains a series of chapters written by acknowledged experts in the field.

This book is about gilding described in more detail, about cutting quills, about binding books, about preparing vellum. In short, about all those lovely calligraphy materials and techniques so often described in aggravating inadequacy in so many calligraphic how-to's.

Written well, that even the most fearful beginner can follow the instructions, this book is a boon for every calligrapher who wants to move beyond copying the ductus.

3 out of 5 stars Very basic information book.......2003-12-09

If one is new to the art of calligraphy, then this book covers the most needed information. However for someone who is familiar with the art, this book is too full of the basics. The first 25 pages (out of 59) deal with the instruments and products you'll need. Other than that it covers the needed areas to make calligraphic pieces as a new hobbyist. Very much recommended for the beginners.
