Book Description
This is a short and trenchant history of the organizations--the World Bank, IMF, WTO, and Group of Seven--that have promoted economic globalization and which are now trying to manage the unmanageable. Walden Bello points to their manifest failings, seen in recurrent financial crises, the ever widening gulf between developing and industrialized countries, the persistence of gross inequalities, and mass poverty. He examines new ideas for reforming world economic management, and argues that a much more fundamental and radical shift of direction is required.
Customer Reviews:
Trade über alles.......2006-09-20
For Walden Bello, globalization is the accelerated world integration of capital, production and markets, driven by the logic of corporate profitability. It is a synonym for `trade über alles' or trade above equity, justice, environment, solidarity and community.
The main headways for this globalization are the IMF, the World Bank and the WTO, who are dominated by the USA and the West and its inherent private interests, and whose policies exacerbate economic stagnation, widen inequalities and deepen poverty around the globe.
For the author, genuine solidarity forces have to step in rapidly, for the alternative is a world of terrorists, demagogues of the religious and secular right and purveyors of irrationality and nihilism.
His proposed remedies are drastic, revolutionary and for me at least partly utopian. They will be extremely difficult to implement: turning the IMF into a research agency with no policy powers; disempowering the World Bank by boycotting (!) its bonds; halting the WTO or reversing its mandate for liberalization of trade.
On the positive side, Walden Bello wants to see a reorientation of national economies from production for export to production for the local markets, a redistribution of income and land, a global economy functioning not on market mechanisms but on democratic choice and a complete abolition of transnational corporations.
Elimination of market mechanisms, a return to national autarkies, and democratic choice (permanent?, a planned economy?, giving the political and economic power in one hand?) are not very subtle solutions seeing the historical results of these policies.
Drastic policy and power control changes, not reorientations, of international institutions and redistribution of wealth are more obvious choices.
In this short but thought provoking book, where emotions are sometimes running very high, Walden Bello defends tooth and nail the poor and the needy against the mighty few.
I also highly recommend the author's `Dilemmas of Domination'.

Book Description
The competitiveness of European companies is largely dependant on their ability to adapt to new social and technical innovations. This often involves major realignments of their business ideas, work organisation and technology, and also requires the development of new competencies on the part of production personnel. This book examines the processes which take place within companies undergoing such realignments. It provides a frame of reference for evaluating the character, depth and stability of the changes taking place, and the nature of the new competencies which emerge. This framework offers a tool which management and unions can utilise when dealing with these issues in real life. The application of this framework is illustrated by eleven case studies based on manufacturing and process industry companies from different European countries.

Lab Guide.......2005-10-03
The lab guide is very helpful for the lab. It was very specific and detailed.
An excellent manual for teaching decriptive embryology.......2001-05-02
I witnessed the birth of the first edition of this book when I was still a college student, and have seen its transformation to suit the needs of each new era. The book offers fundamental principles in descriptive embryology. I hoped to see more on the expperimental aspect of the subject. I also wished to see the embryology of more of the animal phyla (eg. fruit fly, zebra fish) included.
An Embryology Lab Instructor's Comments.......2000-04-28
I have used this book in my course for four years. Typically one-hundred students per year are enrolled in my course. The quality of the photomicrographs is excellent. My only criticisms of the micrographs are that 1.) The sequence of the photomicrographs would be enhanced if they were arranged in a developmental sequence. Presently, the student must flip pages constantly to view all slides relevant to a particular developmental stage. 2.) There are not enough sagittal sections of the chick embryos. 3.) 96 hour chick embryos, instead of pig embryos might be an improvement. The text is good, although not quite as thorough as the Matthews lab manual was.

Book Description
The Seven Secrets of Somewhere Lake is one of the best books that have come from the pen of this popular author, photographer, lecturer and naturalist.
In the summer Sam and Giny plan to make a movie film of the Grand Canyon country. This year, they say, there are to be no baby animals taken in to be cared for. No sooner do they make this resolve than fate dooms it, with several large snickers. They have no choice but to "adopt" in rapid succession: Zipper, a half-starved fawn; Zowie, a baby red fox; Zanie, a taffy-colored puppy, and Zinnia, a tiny skunk! Then, as if that isn't enough, seven young beavers are literally dumped into Sam's lap.
Customer Reviews:
A childhood favorite.......2006-01-26
I read and reread Sam Campbell's books when I was a kid. It didn't hurt my imaginings that my name is also Giny. These books keep me in stitches and I appreciate that there is no dumbing down, yet they can be read by kids. Its a great way to push the envelope on developing readers' vocabulary and comprehension skills and even better for reading to kids who think they might be outgrowing such a thing but could use a little subtle help with the book. I love Sam Campbell and his books. My greatest fear is that I will research his legacy and find that the Sanctuary is now a strip mall.
Great clean book for young and old........2004-09-13
All of the Sam Campbell books are classics that are great for young people to read. All the books are based on the amazing life of Sam Campell and all his creatures. They are funny easy to read and very very entertaining.
Customer Reviews:
Get off of that asphalt!.......2002-04-03
This is a great guide to trail running in general and to the trails of Washington. It will appeal to the hardened veteran, the novice, or even the armchair runner. Walkers and hikers will also find it a good resource. General trail running information, equipment, cautions and rewards are discussed in the front section of the book. The trails are regionalized for quick access. Through use of maps, elevation charts, photos, and difficulty ratings it is easy to tell at a glance which trail fits your time frame and energy level on any given day. Rather than a bland description, a bit of history, geology and humor is included to make each trail more personal and enticing. The photos give a great preview of the beauty of each trail. If this book doesn't help you get off of the asphalt and enjoy the beauty and spirituality of the wilderness I don't know what will.
A "Must Have" for Trail Runners.......2002-03-22
As someone who has run a number of the trails described in this book I would say it's a "must have" for anyone who wants to explore some great trail runs in Washington state. The author does a wonderful job of describing the trails, rating their difficulty, highlighting points of interest and even suggesting alternative activities at the same location (e.g. shorter nature trails) for our non-running family and friends!
All the trails I run are covered in this book, and there are dozens described that I can't wait to explore. As an additional bonus there are numerous tips from the author on what type of gear and supplies are useful to a trail runner and tips and tricks to get you "there and back again."
Book Description
Runners everywhere are leaving the blacktop in search of great off-road runs. Just in time for this hot new trend is the only guide available to the best trail-running routes in Western Washington. Longtime trail runner Mike McQuaide describes over fifty easily accessible routes, in the mountains and foothills and along the shorelines, rivers, and lakes of Western Washigton. Here is all the information runners want about distance, difficulty, trail conditions, running times, and alternate routes, along with photographs and detailed maps. McQuaide also provides plenty of expert information about trail running safety, equipment, technique, and conditioning.

A good guide for hardcore dayhikers.......2002-10-12
I don't run and I don't jog, but I do hike fast. If you like dayhiking more than backpacking, but still want to see cool trails, this is a great guide! He is an excellent writer who keeps the reader intrested and doesn't ramble off onto "memory lane" like a few other guide writers.
Outstanding.......2001-05-30
Before I went on my trip to Washington, I was completely and utterly clueless about this area. I am a very experienced hiker and I knew that Washington not only had the best hikes but also the most difficult. Finding this book was so helpful. I not only knew exactly where to go but I knew all the little hints and shortcuts . Please, if you are interested in hiking in the WA area, take my word for it and get this book. It is a lifesaver.

Customer Reviews:
A valuable asset.......2006-05-31
Wall Street Words is the most valuable and most frequently used book in my library. I recommend it to my friends and to Amazon users.
THIS BOOK GIVES YOU AN EDGE WHEN STUDYING FOR THE SERIES 7.......2003-08-07
I am currently studying for the Series 7 stockbroker exam. The study manual often introduces terms with little or no explanation. The glossary in the study manual only covers a small fraction of the terms used. Before buying this book, I would have to list the terms, stop studying, and find explanations. Sometimes, I would have to waste precious study time calling into my trainer to discuss these terms.
Now, I have all of the definitions I need right at my finger tips. This book has been a great supplement to the Series 7 study material. I no longer waste time struggling with terms I do not understand. I do not have to waste valuable time on hold calling into my trainer to get a better understanding of terms.
A good word for Wall Street Words.......2001-08-10
It has all the words, it has all the definitions...it's all here. I work for a Wall Street firm and this is one of the few investment reference guides I keep at my office. Buy it.
Very Helplful.......2000-07-19
A fine book for even experienced investors. I use this book daily even though I am only a part-time investor. A nice addition to your bookshelf
An excellent guide to Wall Street Terms.......2000-05-23
This is probably the single best reference source for Wall Street terminology. It is complete and even includes investment tips. I would recommend Wall Stree Words to any investor who is sometimes baffled by the financial mumbo jumbo of the Wall Street experts.
