Good profile, but lacks critical eye.......2002-06-27

This book offers a detailed, and sometimes humorous profile of the driving force behind the New Economy. In some respects, this book is inspiring in its take-no-prisoners approach to ambition and success.

However, in as much as it glorifies the dress-down, work-till-you-drop, super ambitious types who drive the New Economy, the author never asks the critical questions of cost. Nickles describes people postponing weddings, having no time for friends or romance. These are people who practically live in their offices because a home is not condusive to the frenetic pace of e-commerce. I admire the ambition and innovation of the Change Agents, but I'm not sure I want to see these people thirty years from now.

Apparently Ms. Nickles (who I assume didn't go through such a lifestyle) finds none of this disturbing.

A fascinating read........2002-01-26

A fascinating read about today's internet driven world and the young turks behind the wheel. I thought the book might be a bit too statistical, but it was not at all. Nickles explains the behavior and psychology of the new technology-fluent generation and their far-reaching influences, from traditional corporate environments to culture changing dot coms like wedding planners and on-line magazines. A lot of intellegence gathering research went into the book, but it is presented in an enjoyable, anecdotal fashion.

This is very well written and in language that someone with a 11th grade education can read...without getting lost nor talked down to. Thomas Jefferson's Farm Book 1774-1826.......2002-12-27

Thomas Jefferson's Farm Book (1774-1826) edited by Edwin Morris Betts are found portions of fifty-two years of plantation management at Jefferson's estates in Albermarle, Bedford, and Campbell Counties.

There are many entries in Jefferson's "Garden Book" that are more appropriate to his "Farm Book," just as there are entries in the "Farm Book" that belong to his other memoranda books. But Jefferson was often inconsistent with the record of his jottings; probably he just placed them in the books at hand.

The "Farm Book," then, is not a farm book in the limited sense, but a plantation book embracing multitudinous activities on his several plantations, the center of interest always being either Monticello or Poplar Forest.

I found reading through this book to chronicle how Jefferson, as a plantation manager, worked to plan ahead in order to provide food and clothing for the one hundred-twenty slaves on the five thousand acre estate. Jefferson set himself to apply on his own farms the results of a lifetime of sturdy and experiment in agricultural theories. The letters and notes he left to posterity and the mechanical models he designed and made record his contributions to scientific agriculture. All of which are brough to our attention within the pages of this volume.

The narrative is free flowing and easily comprehended and it is a joy to read. As Jefferson once wrote... "I am going to Virginia. I am then to be liberated from the hated occupations of politics, and to remain in the bosom of my family, my farm, and my book." The pages are copies of the original pages of the farm book with commentary and relevant extracts from other writings follow these pages. Nevertheless, you get a feel that running a farm wasn't an easy job.

Devastating factual mistake sinks this book to the bottom.......2004-08-25

This book has an unbelievable and remarkable factual mistake which simply should not be allowed to happen. The Swedish World Champion in Wrestling, Mikael Ljungberg, a national hero who is also an Olympic champion is accused of having been doped and disqualified in the past and barred from championships for 2 years!! This blatant LIE is admitted by the sloppy author who is nevertheless facing legal action from the Swedish wrestling community and Mr. Ljungberg himself. Throw it in trash please!

THE Olympic book to have. .......2004-08-19

After a long search for an Olympic record/history book, I am very glad that I found this one. As another reviewer pointed out, one of the jewels of this book is that it list first through eighth place for all events. And it covers ALL events, including the discontinued ones (tug-of-war, croquet, the swimming obstacle race, etc...). There is also a short background history on a vast majority of the entries which is excellent. I have been extremely happy with this book and I'm relying heavily on it now during the Athens Games. I will definitely buy his next Complete Book of the Winter Olympics.

Grab this book if you can.......2004-07-10

This book gives you all the top 8 finishes in Olympic History. Most sources give you the top 3 or some give you the winners only. In Track and Field, they tell you that Bob Hayes won the 100 meters in 10.05 in 1964 in all others they tell you 10.0. Most people don't know that Tokyo used auto-timers for their Track events and you know that Henry Carr won 200m in 20.36, Mike Larrabee 400m in 45.15.

Save your money.......2007-01-21

I recently finished reading this book and was sorely disappointed. Although it claims to be a dictionary of "difficult" words, it includes many words that really are quite commonplace ("resident," for example) and adds redundancy by defining closely related forms of the same word (for example, "linguist," "linguistic" and "linguistics"). The inclusion of such words comes at a steep price; many genuinely difficult or less-known words such as "omphaloskepsis" (the act of contemplating one's navel) and "aglet" (the piece of plastic at the end of a shoelace) are omitted.

One easy word that isn't included in this book is "proofread." This omission is unfortunate. Perhaps if it had been included, the dictionary's four proofreaders would have known what they had been hired to do. As published, this book is littered with errors. Here are several examples of errors:

-"algid" is identified as a noun (it is an adjective);
-the definition and pronunciation of "cervine" seem to have been typed with caps lock on, rendering the pronunciation completely unreadable;
-there are two lengthy entries for "compose" which seem to differ only in that one entry marks a particular definition as archaic;
-there are two identical entries for "dilatation," one of which appears out of alphabetical order (after "dilate");
-the pronunciation of "enceinte" is omitted.

There are also dozens of less serious errors, including several misspellings and many missing spaces and punctuation errors.

Overall, this is the worst book I have ever read. Next time, I plan to read my local yellow pages instead.

UPDATE (8/15/2007): I've just discovered an error in this book that is so egregious that it needed to be added to this review. The usage note for the word "locate" says, "In formal English one should avoid using locate to mean 'find' (it drives him out of his mind when he can't locate something). In precise usage locate means 'fix the position of, put in place' (the studio should be located on a north-facing slope)."

It turns out that this isn't really complete. The computerized Oxford American Dictionaries (as included with Mac OS X Tiger) has a more complete version of this usage note. It says, "In formal English, one should avoid using locate to mean 'find (a missing object)':: he can't seem to locate his keys. In precise usage, locate means 'discover the exact place or position of' or 'fix the position of, put in place': | the doctors hope to locate the source of the bleeding; | the studio should be located on a north-facing slope."

In particular, the example in the latter usage note about the doctors should be incorrect according to the former usage note. This is because the former usage note neglects to qualify with the phrase "a missing object" the prohibition on using "locate" to mean "find", and it does not mention that it can be used to mean "discover the exact place or position of."

While certainly it is reasonable to omit some things from a less comprehensive dictionary, it is deplorable that the editors of this dictionary do so in such a way as to mislead the reader.

Not as difficult as I thought.......2007-01-04

I bought this dictionary because I have just started a graduate program in English. I thought it might cut out some of the more well-known words and give me a more compact dictionary that I could really use. It seems that they only cut out small words (apparently, "difficult"=polysyllabic), and I find myself still turning to this worn-out old Webster's dictionary my boyfriend bought in high school. Also, there is not much etymological information. Having a B.A. in Latin and being very interested in poetry, I find that the dictionary is not very useful for my purposes. It's good for a basic overview of words--probably good for GRE or LSAT study. Not the dictionary for English grad students. (I have access to the OED online, so I rely on that much more heavily)

A real gem.......2001-07-29

This little book has just about any word you might look up, and omits those you won't (e.g., "cat"). In addition, it provides example sentences and explanatory notes for many words (e.g., "further" vs. "farther"). All this in a small and inexpensive package. This is perhaps the only dictionary you'll need.

Instant Illumination of Verbal Perplexities.......2001-07-20

What a relief it is to know that one does not have to carry around the Oxford English Dictionary to keep one's head above water with the English language. I am often at a loss for the correct spelling or usage of a word that I think is the right one. Common business dictionaries often fail to provide the material for creative writing, and usually fail to provide useful examples. And, of course, it helps to have something handy when someone else decides to show off their language skills.

This little gem, "The Oxford Dictionary of Difficult Words" is intended to fill this particular gap. Only 1-1/2" thick, the paperback is just the size for slipping into a briefcase or portfolio. It provides all the basics; pronunciation, parts of speech, and concise definitions, and sample sentences. It covers both technical as well as English usage. So if you are occasionally non-plussed by the appearance of elucubrate or exactly how to use sardonic, this is the handy reference for you.

entertaining anecdotes set this book apart.......2000-06-25

Behind the Brushstrokes is a delightful introduction to Chinese calligraphy. What sets this book apart is how it's entertaining anecdotes about famous calligrapher personalities, from ten dynasties and the PRC, help to bring this ancient and beautiful art form to life. As well, the history of calligraphy back to the earliest forms of writing from pictographic characters to the major styles of script still in use today are all touched on. The section on appreciating Chinese calligraphy is short and without illustration, but gets across well the essence. A number of black and white illustrations are presented elsewhere in the book to show styles of writing, calligraphy tools, and methods, among other things. Other interesting sections include Chinese calligraphy in the world today, and Chinese calligraphy and other arts. All in all, an accessible and enjoyable introduction to one of the great art forms of Asia.
