4 out of 5 stars Manage organizational change, and quickly.......2007-09-20

The lessons Elspeth Murray and Peter Richardson wish to convey about organizational change are important, applicable and easy to sum up: If you want to change, do it quickly. The first 100 days are crucial. Build "speed, critical mass and intelligent momentum." Traditional models of decision making and strategic planning take too much time and contain far too many bottlenecks, making them inappropriate for the Information Age. The authors have done their research and they clearly explain the key elements of change and how to apply them to a range of situations. In fact, the authors do too good a job of emphasizing their main points: The book's drawback is its repetitiveness. We recommend that leaders who haven't yet managed a major change or those who wonder why their efforts have not succeeded read this book - especially the first half. Once you understand the core concepts, you may be able to read the rest less intently.

1 out of 5 stars Going Fast Forward causes skipping.......2006-05-30

I expect that in a business world that values speed over most things, Richardson & Murray's book would strike a sympathetic chord. Nonetheless, beyond the existence of a popular belief that the quicker the better is how business should be run, I know of no research which would substantiate the claims to this effect. Are the stories that are provided by the authors sufficient to confirm their statements? I think not. Business is always looking for the next fad, something that will make all the difference in as short a time as possible. Management authors and practitioners who collude in this misguided search for the Holy Grail do more harm than good. Organizations are successful in the long term if they engage employees' hearts, not if they focus on things and logic. This engagement and involvement, the establishment of a democratic community, are not attainable in 100 days - maybe multiples of a 100 days.

5 out of 5 stars Review by the Editor of Stern's Management Review.......2003-07-03

The authors present a framework for rapid implementation of organizational change. They assert that creating understanding for the need for change, building momentum, and perhaps scoring some initial successes in the first 100 days greatly increases chances for success. Successful change calls for Winning Conditions, the book's core framework, consisting of: correct diagnosis of the change challenge; early development of shared understanding; enrichment of shared understanding; establishing a sense of urgency; creating a limited, focused, strategic agenda; rapid, strategic decision making and deployment; a human flywheel of commitment; identifying and managing sources of resistance; follow-through on changing organizational enablers; and demonstrated leadership commitment. Discussion and examples make this approach clear and show how it's applied. The authors are careful to distinguish between different types (or depths) of intervention. The book is outstanding in its scope and quality of thought. It is highly informative, gets to the meat of ideas clearly and quickly, and gives the reader solid value from start to finish.

Drawing on their MBA executive teaching, research and consulting, the authors present a framework for rapid implementation of organizational change. They assert that the first 200 days of a major change initiative determines its outcome. Successful change calls for Winning Conditions: correct diagnosis of the change challenge; early development of shared understanding; enrichment of shared understanding; establishing a sense of urgency; creating a limited, focused, strategic agenda; rapid, strategic decision making and deployment; a human flywheel of commitment; identifying and managing sources of resistance; follow-through on changing organizational enablers; and demonstrated leadership commitment. Discussion and examples make this approach clear and applied. The book is very impressive in its scope and depth. It is meaty, absorbing and to-the-point.

                      Book Description

The Molecular Basis of Smell and Taste Transduction Chairman: Frank Margolis 1993 The survival of an organism depends largely on its ability to monitor its environment constantly and accurately. To do this, organisms have evolved a wide range of sensory systems to detect, transduce and evaluate relevant environmental signals. Smell and taste are two primary neurosensory systems that animals use to assess the external chemical environment. This monitoring is a complex operation: an organism must be capable of resolving not only a single odorant or taste stimulant from a heterogeneous mix of chemicals, but also concentration differences and their temporal variation. The systems that have developed to fulfil these tasks appear to be functionally similar in organisms as diverse as Drosophila and humans. The contemporary techniques of molecular biology, microprotein sequencing, immunohistochemistry and patch-clamp electrophysiology have permitted the study of the molecular basis of chemosensory transduction. Consequently, characterization of the biochemical and molecular mechanisms associated with smell and taste is now experiencing an expansion that would have been unthinkable only a few years ago. Of particular interest has been the recent cloning of olfactory receptor genes: the expression patterns of some of these are described in this book. Other important work reported here includes the identification of olfactory binding proteins, genetic analysis in Drosophila and Caenorhabditis elegans, the G protein-mediated activation of second messenger pathways, and the role of ion channels, perireceptor events and mucus proteins in chemosensory transduction. The book contains contributions from many of the leading scientists working on varied aspects of the chemical senses, with discussion of their recent results and the most important questions that remain to be addressed. This book includes the latest information from this field and will be of interest to both those working on chemosensory transduction and those interested in signal transduction in general. 5 out of 5 stars The Best Book on the Topic.......2007-02-19

As a trained martial artist with over 25 years experience in Chinese, Korean, American and Philippino arts as well as degrees in Chemistry and Engineering, I think that Ted Weimann's book is the best out there for developing speed as well as maintaining conditioning in middle age and after. His detailed discussion of musculature, its operation, and the keys to maximizing better speed performance without the use of supplements is inspiring in an age when mass and weight seem to be the main priority for young athletes. Also, his discussion of the effects of aging on athletic performance, and how to forestall the effect, will be a great benefit to any individual who desires to keep a maximum level of fitness as they grow older.

You can't go wrong by owning this book!

5 out of 5 stars Warrior Speed is a very useful martial arts guide.......2004-11-03

This book might be considered by some to be in a similar category as Bruce Lee's Tao of Jeet Kune Do, but I think Warrior Speed is far more useful. It covers a wider range of needed skills - both mental and physical. It's thorough, clearly explained, and applicable. This book has enabled me to significantly improve my martial arts skills. I'm confident you'll find it just as good.

5 out of 5 stars A total understanding of his work!.......2004-09-01

It is very evident that he understands and has researched this topic. It is a bit overwhelming at some places and may take a couple readings to cover but it is well worth it. It is a book that every martial artist should have.

5 out of 5 stars This book is great.......2004-02-20

Weimann has filled his book with a variety of basic principles and concrete examples of a handful of exercises for improving speed in martial arts. Many parts of this book would be useful in almost any athletic endeavor, and many of the studies cited are on performance in things like weightlifting, running, swimming, and cycling.

If you are looking for simply a series of drills and exercises, then this isn't the book for you. If you are looking to really understand the physics, physiology and pyschology of althetic performance, then this is an excellent text. It may be dry to some readers as it sometimes reads like a scientific review article, but I found the references to research extremely helpful and enlightening. I am a bit more skeptical of some of the psychological drills, but the mind is a complicated thing.

I found a lot of good information in this book that I haven't encountered in other exercise/fitness books, such as why you should take Tylenol for muscle aches but not Alleve (the answer is on page 61) if you want to gain muscle mass.

The only complaints I have are with the title and the binding which doesn't open flat. The title is kind of cheesy. A good description, although very pedantic would be something like: "A Review of Current Research in Developing Speed in Athletic Performance and Suggested Applications of These Principles to Training".

                      5 out of 5 stars Very Helpful.......2004-01-20

I practice Kenpo, and have been studying for about four years now. I'm not the best, and I'm certainly not the fastest. After reading Warrior Speed, I'm still not the best nor the fastest, but it did help me to overcome a plateau that hit about four months ago, and I have improved a good deal.

Having kept a garden journal for years, I am thrilled with my newest: the garden journal from P. Allen Smith. It's attractive, room to write and draw, pockets and I like that it's wire-bound so the pages can "expand" as you paste pix of your own garden in. Nice for a gift, or yourself.

In Japanese calligraphy, each stroke is rich with meaning, each character speaks volumes. Traces of the Brush provides the first illustrated history of this unique art. The authors explore its many styles and genres and investigate the calligrapher's tools - paper, ink, and brush. Interwoven with excerpts of literature and poetry, the text immerses the Western reader in the spirit of Japanese calligraphy. Abundant full-color illustrations make this book a feast for the eyes.

The authors' sincere appreciation of the art of shodou is convincingly mediated to the reader. Especially the colorful and illustrative praising of kana calligraphy impressed me.
The high-quality images of the ancient masterpieces play an important role occupying a plenty of page space.
Just remember that this is a book on history, attitudes and ways of looking at the japanese calligraphy. This in not a text on calligraphy techniques. Comprehensive instructions on shodou are excluded from this book.
