Book Description
Debts, deficits, taxation, regulation, and all the other hallmarks of economic slavery are already ravaging this nation. This book warns Americans that a dreaded new world order is being built around them and that economic control is part of a plan to enslave us. John F. McManus analyzes many proposed solutions and quick fixes for America's financial woes and shows that most either just scratch the surface or do more harm than good.

Book Description
Designed as a convenient, clearly written, and comprehensive desktop reference for executives and managers, Critical Issues in Business Conduct addresses the legal, ethical, and social issues that will dominate business in the 1990s. Based upon a research project in which 276 of America's most successful and well managed firms actively participated, the book explores topical issues arising from the relationship between business organizations and their external constituencies - consumers, government agencies, competitors, and others - as well as those which characterize relationships between businesses and their own managers, employees, directors, and shareholders. From the impact of AIDS and problems of drug and alcohol use in the workplace to financial accounting, employee rights, and sexual harassment, this unique resource provides both detailed discussion and practical guidelines for dealing with the most critical concerns of managers and executives today. The business issues selected for coverage are those that firms of all sizes must successfully address to remain competitive in the global markets of the 1990s. Separate chapters examine such topics as drug testing and treatment programs, equal employment opportunity and affirmative action, workplace safety, protecting proprietary and confidential information, marketing and advertising issues, insider trading and securities laws, and more. Special care has been taken to incorporate the most current developments, including recent Supreme Court decisions that will affect business firms' responses in the areas of punitive damages, business "speech," age and sex discrimination, the environment, and a myriad of employer and employee rights and responsibilities. Some 1,000 references are included, making this the most complete one-volume resource of its kind available. In addition to executives and managers, the book will also be of significant value to corporate attorneys and board members as well as to students in management and business programs.

Book Description
This second edition of
Membrane Protein Purification and Crystallization, A Practical Guide is written for bench scientists working in the fields of biochemistry, biology, and proteomic research. This guide presents isolation and crystallization techniques in a concise form, emphasizing the critical aspects unique to membrane proteins. It explains the principles of the methods and provides protocols of general use, permitting researchers and students new to this area to adapt these techniques to their particular needs. This edition is not only an update but is comprised mainly of new contributions. It is the first monograph compiling the essential approaches for membrane protein crystallization, and emphasizes recent progress in production and purification of recombinant membrane proteins.
Key features
* Provides general guidelines and strategies for isolation and crystallization of membrane proteins
* Gives detailed protocols that have wide application, and low specialized equipment needs
* Emphasizes recent progress in production and purification of recombinant membrane proteins, especially of histidine-tagged and other affinity-epitope-tagged proteins
* Summarizes recent developments of Blue-Native PAGE, a high resolution separation technique, which is independent of the use of recombinant techniques, and is especially suited for proteomic analyses of membrane protein complexes
* Gives detailed protocols for membrane protein crystallization, and describes the production and use of antibody fragments for high resolution crystallization
* Presents a comprehensive guide to 2D-crystallization of membrane proteins

C'est vraiment excellent! BEST language book!.......2007-05-16
Used in combination with the audio materials, this course promises so much more than the usual (colors, numbers, basic greetings, etc.), and places a strong emphasis on pronunciation and idioms. You finish with a useful knowledge of French--the kind people actually speak. Comprehension is difficult at first because the speakers talk at a normal pace without overemphasizing the words, but it is this technique that leaves one able to know what people are saying without having them slow down.
As for the method of delivery--it's fun! The textbook follows a narrative structure, specifically a story about Robert, an American student in France, and Mireille, a young and witty student at the famed Sorbonne in Paris. There is love, mystery, and lots of important cultural information on the way, as well as an underlying humor that made our class laugh quite often. I recommend it highly for use in a class, and if you are willing to dish out the cash, for independent study as well. It has everything you need to gain a firm grounding in French language, culture, and idioms.
You can buy the textbook with both parts together or separately, but either way, you will want to know what happens with the story, so be ready to order both parts, one way or another.
Le cours de langues français le plus complet.......2005-12-13
"French in Action" is a complete, college-level language course intended for students who have aspirations of fluency. The course consists of five components: video tapes (or DVDs), audio tapes (or CDs), textbook, workbook and study guide. All the components work together and are necessary for the course to be effective. The course utilizes an immersion method, meaning that after the first couple of lessons, everything except the study guide is in French. In spite of its high profile and ready access on public television, I don't think it's a good course for beginners. It moves quickly and would probably be best for someone with previous study in the language. The course would be nearly ideal for a college-level student with at least a year of high school French under their belt.
It's a full meal. There are 52 lessons divided into two, 26 lesson parts. Each part can be purchased separately, but any way you slice it, the entire course is a considerable investment in both time and money. Working about an hour per day, it's paced to be handled at the rate of about a lesson a week. At full speed, you might be able to finish it in a year. Because most of the lessons involve some kind of conversational practice, the course is best taken with a partner or the help of a tutor. Self-study students might be tempted to eliminate the conversational and writing exercises, but doing so would be a mistake. Those exercises constitute at least half of the value of the course.
One of the real strengths of "French in Action' is that it puts an emphasis on the French language the way the French actually speak it, which is quite a bit different from the way American phrase books tend to teach it. Right from the start, you're listening to the language at full speed in all its idiomatic glory. If you're anything like me, you'll have the sense of always struggling to catch up. But, I like the fact that the early emphasis is on listening and getting a sense of the rhythm of the language. Younger students will probably like the fact that after the first several lessons, they will have learned at least a dozen ways to insult their friends.
One of the weaknesses of the course is that the audio tapes really need to be used along with the workbook. Hence, it's difficult (though not impossible) to use them in the car during long commutes. Don't expect a standard presentation, because the material isn't handled anything like standard French textbooks. Tenses, for example, are introduced so matter-of-factly that the very first words you utter are in the future tense. And there is no emphasis at all on word-for-word translation. In fact, quite often you're listening to idiomatic phrases in which the individual words when analyzed don't make much sense, but the meaning of the entire phrase when spoken in context is perfectly clear.
"French in Action" is a real grown-up language course for students with mature study skills and sufficient interest to get through it. I, myself, have taken a couple runs at it over the years and have only recently developed a successful study routine. Though the video program is on public television all the time, it's not a casual course at all. Don't believe the promos that suggest that all you have to do is "listen, watch and get involved". Just watching the shows on TV won't get you very far. You will spend at least 350 hours going through the entire course and probably more like 700-1000. That may sound like a lot, but by the end you will doubtless have a better understanding of French than you would have had from any other commercial package.
Good For Review.......2005-09-20
The Capretz method is a wonderful learning device, and it provides great review and enrichment for more advanced speakers. However, it is very flawed for high school and even college use. First the videos are dated, so immature audiences are unlikely to take them seriously. Secondly, the workbook and exercises are targeted at beginning French speakers. Yet it is very difficult for a beginner to follow the dialog. If, however, you skip Part I and go to Part II, you may spend a lot of time trying to orient the students to the Capretz method.
My recommendations for intermediate studens is to use the videos and textbook (no workbooks!) to enhance listening and reading comprehension. Then consider the excellent En Bonne Forme book, CDs and workbook as an alternative or supplement.
En Bonne Forme provides actual literary passages for reading and listening comprehension, extensive vocabulary lists, and grammar that will advance every facet of your French language skills.
If you are an intermediate student with limited funds and time, then try En Bonne Forme.
A wonderful complete immersion in French when used properly.......2004-06-03
This video-audio-workbook course is incredible! I took three semesters of college level French many decades ago in a wonderful native speaker tutorial and found on my infrequent trips to France or Quebec that over the years, my quasi-fluency had faded away. I took an adult education program with a competant native speaker recently and found the traditional high school textbook, CD, testing regime inadequate. In all likelihood, Noelle. the High School student from Atlanta who did not like the book, probably was denied the whole package. In fact, the text relies on the PBS TV video or the free broadband video version (...)-AND the 52 Casette Tapes or CD's and workbooks I and II. In order of importance, I would rate the Audio or CD and workbooks I and II above the text and video. Granted, it is an expensive package (...)but it also the closest thing to an immersion program this side of the Atlantic. So, Yale University Press overcharges. But all textbooks are out of line. This package is a bargain amongst bargains. Incidentally, the two Study Guides do very little and may be skipped altogether. However, the rest of the package MUST BE USED TOGETHER as a whole. Capretz, recently retired from Yale, is a rare master teacher and this program precludes the need of an intermediate teacher.
Irrelevant for classroom use.......2004-06-01
I just finished a year course using the second part of this text as the main curriculum, and although this might have been a useful resource for adults trying to supplement class work back in the 80's when this series was created, I found it pretty ineffective for a high school class. The video that goes with the text seems cheesy and outdated (making it a lot more difficult for students to take it seriously, to be quite honest), and the topics and vocabulary are mostly irrelevant too. Thanks to Mr. Capretz, I can tell you how to start my car and that I used to live in a grass hut, but my conversation skills are actually a little rusty from the inane verbal excercises. This might be a good course for adults looking for supplement and review, but this is not a very good text for classroom use, and especially not well organized or easy to follow if you haven't used it from the very beginning. As for students, there are much better texts out there.

I found this book to be a good source of inspiration. It gives different beautifull options to do capital letters and many choices for each one. I think this book is a must for serious calligraphers who want great ideas for initials.

Book Description
The first practical guide to linking business strategy with the art and science of user experience and online design
It has becoming increasingly clear that the big winners in the E-business arena are those that practice customer-centric design. While there are a multitude of good books on the art and science of user interface and website design, until Built For Use, there were none that focused on user experience from the corporate strategist's and marketing manager's perspectives. Drawing upon her work as a user-experience strategist for numerous Fortune 1,000 firms, Karen Donoghue explores the dynamics of business strategy and user experience in a concise, jargon-free manner for nontechnical managers. With the help of fascinating and instructive before-and-after case studies, she helps managers become fluent in the language of user-experience; identifies user-experience and designstrategy best practices; explains how to determine what customers want; and much more.

Customer Reviews:
Impractical at Best.......2007-04-25
I bought this book because my job requires that I understand web usability and the business of usability, which are topics that I am generally interested in and passionate about. However, the moment I began reading it I realized this was not the book for me. I did not like it. It was impractical at best and totally useless at worst. I can't believe the author has any real-world experience. The book is filled with so much common sense that's trying to being passed as arcane and is splashed with boring corporate mumbo jumbo. I'm sure you would not be hard-pressed to find words like "Synergy" and "Paradigm Shift" in half the book.
With that aside, I'm very appreciative of the fact that it was written in 2002 (as of this writing, that's 5 years ago) and it's my fault for not noticing that before I bought it. Further, perhaps I was not its intended audience, and instead it was geared more toward MBA and marketing types who have absolutely zero online experience. If that is the case, then grouping this book with Don't Make Me Think: A Common Sense Approach to Web Usability (2nd Edition) was totally inappropriate - a book which is very practical and accessible. Perhaps.
Four Plus or 5 Minus.......2003-05-27
Fabulous message and important concepts. My main complaint is that the message was 'restricted' in how it is applied. The issues raised and the corresponding solutions are applicable to all aspects of designing human interactions with business...and not just considering customers (who are often engaged in roles for which the term 'user' is inappropriate... a term I abhor because of its lack of 'universality').
To follow the model given in the introduction, by considering the strategic implications of the customer and the business anyone could easily come up with solutions that fly in the face of the abilities and values of the employees as human beings. All stakeholder factors have to be put in balance with those of the business.
In addition, the concepts apply outside the typical business model and/or products. A good example is home design (not decor) which typically doesn't consider many 'functions' that occur within its walls other than sleeping, washing, bathing, and eating. Many of the concepts presented here can/should be applied in other problem/solution settings. I contend that every business project that involves some human interaction is subject to these principles.
The models/recommendations within this book, with a few tweaks, can and should be applied to designing human interaction in many yet-untapped areas/markets (leaving tremendous business potential lying all around). The recommendations given specifically as to better 'online' design can and should be applied to all points of interaction a business has with all stakeholders.
I highly recommend this book with the caveat that you take its potential application beyond the dimensions within which it is presented. The word 'customer' can often be replaced with 'stakeholder'. When encountering the term 'user experience' drop the term 'user' and focus on the 'experience' (since most individuals measure the value of their experience with a business based on all points of interaction, not just online).
Voice of a Consultant.......2003-01-29
Built for Use, by user experience strategist Karen Donoghue, is a compendium of knowledge that anyone hoping to build a truly usable user interface should possess. Donoghue draws on her many years of experience as an industry consultant to present analyses of how websites and other human-machine interfaces succeed and fail. She also channels her extensive contacts in industry and academia to present sage advice and best practices for achieving usability. With a post-bubble eye sharply focused on the bottom line, Donoghue emphasizes that experiences users love don't necessarily coincide with the experiences they will pay for, and that revenue must be the ultimate driver of design choices.
Reading Built for Use, it's hard not to picture oneself as one of Donoghue's clients, and the book as the voice of Donoghue. The book has the pragmatic tone of a consultant who is aware of the fact that your time (and hers) is valuable. She emphasizes the points that need emphasizing, and doesn't spend a lot of time considering ultimately rejected alternatives. You hire Ms. Donoghue, or read her book, because you need to know how to create the best -- and most profitable -- user interfaces right now, and you can't afford to make costly mistakes. From her war stories and references, it's pretty clear that she knows how, and she won't beat around the bush very much before telling you.
One also gets the impression that Donoghue's clients span a broad range of knowledge and experience. In Part I, I counted, I believe, five different occurrences of a variant of "Don't put a tripwire at the checkout counter!" -- in other words, don't put an obstacle in front of a customer who's already been convinced to buy something, has taken out their credit card, and is trying to complete a transaction. "Don't make your first page impossible to get through!" is another oft-repeated dictum. Evidently more than a few of Donoghue's clients insisted on making those mistakes. On the other hand, her detailed accounts of best-practice project planning for usability will be of interest to seasoned veterans of successful projects. Along with her pragmatic tone, Donoghue endeavors to formulate general principles and practices that underlie the best, most-usable interfaces. It was revealing to me to read about the meticulous and principled planning behind one of my personal favorites, the Fidelity Brokerage website, that distinguishes it from similar, but less usable competitors.
Donoghue takes a more speculative point of view in Part III, which discusses future developments. There, she expresses confidence that we will soon be designing for systems that cross the "wet-dry interface" - in other words, parts of the system will be composed of traditional electronic circuits, and other parts will consist of biological components such as neurons in a human body.
Donoghue's clients, and the readers of this book, are a demanding audience. They need to know in practical terms what to do right now to compete in a confusing, rapidly developing arena. They also need an awareness of a future where user experiences that today sound like science fiction will be commonplace. Fortunately Donoghue, with her combination of down-to-earth advice and insight into the fundamental principles that will influence future trends, meets both requirements.
Nothing new for companies with a decent web presence........2002-10-29
Unless your website is still being made by your cousin "who knows a little about this internet thing" there is nothing new for you in this book.
Most of what is presented is common sense, heavy on the why but not the how, and very repetitive. Real life examples are limited and center around the finance industry. My search for a resource to inspire designers take usability to the next level continues and this book is being returned.
Buy this book and give it to management.......2002-08-04
This is the book to read and pass along to Marketing, R&D, Sales, etc. It will help you know the words to say to justify spending time and money on user experience research and design. I read it before starting a new job in Human Factors and passed it up the management chain to widen the perception of what it's all about. It gives you and "them" a common language.

Book Description
The romantic, nineteenth-century image of the Bedouin as fierce, independent nomads on camelback racing across an endless desert persists in the West. Yet since the era of Ottoman rule, the Mzeina Bedouin of the South Sinai desert have lived under foreign occupation. For the last forty years Bedouin land has been a political football, tossed back and forth between Israel and Egypt at least five times.

subjective anthropology.......2003-09-10
I read this book in college, and it was my favorite of ALL of the ethnographies I've had to read. It was interesting and heart-wrenching and uplifting all at the same time. That's what the study of humanity is supposed to be about, right?

Book Description
Roma are the largest minority group in Europe and are the major poverty risk group in Central and Eastern Europe. Poverty rates from recent World Bank poverty studies are striking. In Bulgaria, Roma were found to be ten times more likely to be poor than ethnic Bulgarians. Roma also comprise an increasing share of the population in ECA countries, because of higher birth rates. These dynamics have gained international attention, and the European Union accession process, in particular, has focused attention on the issue. Governments and international institutions have been eager to support initiatives to address the needs of Roma. However, the lack of credible information on the actual living conditions of Roma and the absence of program evaluations have provided substantial obstacles.
This book brings together original sociological research, evaluations of programs, and the first comparative cross-country household survey on ethnicity and poverty. It finds that Roma poverty is multi-faceted and can only be addressed by a comprehensive policy approach that attends to all dimensions of Roma social exclusion. It proposes an inclusive policy approach which would expand and promote Roma involvement and participation in mainstream society, while maintaining cultural and social identity and autonomy. Policy mechanisms include those which make existing policies more accessible to Roma and identifying areas where targeted initiatives are needed.

Book Description
This book explores the origins, rationale, problems and prospects of the European fiscal policy framework. It provides the reader with a roadmap to EMUs budgetary framework by exploring its theoretical and empirical foundations, uncovering its historical roots and emphasizing its supranational nature. The authors, who have been at the forefront of the academic and policy debate on economic policy in Europe, argue that fiscal policy has always been at the core of the EMU debate. The Maastricht criteria and the Stability and Growth Pact are the most contentious building blocks of EMUs institutional architecture: they have aroused heated controversies between academics and policymakers ever since their adoption. As EMUs budgetary rules undergo their first severe shock, Europe is still searching for its fiscal soul. The book's basic premise is that one cannot fully understand EMUs fiscal framework and the recent debate on its reform without placing them in a historical and institutional perspective and abstracting from the uniqueness of EMU, where sovereign countries retain a large degree of fiscal independence, and monetary policy is entrusted to an independent central bank with the overriding mission of maintaining price stability. Analyzing all aspects of EMUs fiscal rules and institutions, this book will strongly appeal to students, academics and researchers of macroeconomic policy and European integration. Policymakers and fiscal policy experts at both national and international levels will also find the book to be of great interest.

Book Description
This book explores the new macroeconomics of the European Monetary Union. It carefully discusses the effects of shocks and policy measures on employment, prices, and the current account. Take for instance a shock or a policy measure in a specific union country. Then what will be the results in the specific country, in the other union countries, and in the rest of the world? The targets of economic policy are full employment and price stability in each of the union countries. The instruments of economic policy are monetary policy by the European Central Bank and fiscal policies by national governments. What is the appropriate policy mix? A salient feature of this book is the numerical estimation of shock and policy multipliers. Money wages are fixed, flexible or downward rigid.
