Globalization and technological innovation are interdependent processes. Globalization has a fundamental influence on the creation and diffusion of technology which, in turn, affects the interdependence of multinational corporations and where they locate their activities. In this book Rajneesh Narula examines the international aspect of this interdependence at two levels: first, between sites, by examining the role of cross-border initiatives in the innovation process; second, between corporate entities, by studying the dynamics of inter-firm collaboration in research and development. Narula explores an important paradox. On the one hand, locations and corporations are increasingly interdependent through supranational organizations, regional integration, strategic alliances, and the flow of investments, technologies, ideas and people. The boundaries of both corporations and states are increasingly porous and imprecise, because businesses use alliances and outsourcing, and countries are rarely technologically self-sufficient. On the other hand, locations remain distinct and idiosyncratic, with innovation systems largely nationally bound. Knowledge creation suffers from lsquo;inertiarsquo; and, because of the systemic nature of learning, continues to be concentrated in a few locations and firms. This book will appeal to students of business and management studies, globalization, technical change and information and communication technologies. Drawing on a wide variety of data at the corporate and national level, it also spells out important lessons for policy makers and managers concerned with industrial and technology policy, as well as those interested in the organization of research and development.

Why is this called Science?.......2005-03-06
When I bought this book, I thought I might get some real concrete facts in the debate of evolution.I must admit,I was disappointed.
The problem is that Biology is not a Science like Mathematics or Physics where theories are subjected to the Scientific Method and a truth or law is proven;and once done does not change based on the pressure of factions or schools of thought.So, if you accept the stuff in this book as science;let me quote Lavers:(page 56)
"McNab's theory involves a few assumptions,but it is ingenious and at least consistent with the broad pattern of body-size variation known from the fossil record.It has received surprisingly little attention from scientists,however,partly because it is rather complicated but mostly because one year later,in 1979,a radical different theory was proposed that caught the imagination of most researchers in the field and seemed to offer a more general explanation for the evolution of warm-bloodedness in both mammals and birds."Since when is science based on how much attention ,how complicated or how much imagination a theory catches?
Then again,on page 101:
"The total number of species also declines towards the poles.The reasons for this are complex and not yet fully understood-at least twenty-eight theories have been proposed-but some factors are clear."Take your pick,get a few to go along with you,now you have a school of thought.But don't wait too long,there'll be some more theories shortly.
This is more like Archaeology where things are collected,measued,named,classified,catalogued,and so forth,but if one expects to get the origin resolved;that will depend on the school of thought in vogue at the time.At least they don't try to pass it off as science.

Super intro to prairie dogs.......2005-09-12
Having spent seven years living just outside Denver where I fell in love with prairie dogs, I was excited to discover this book. Truly, Russell Graves presents the good, bad, and adorable about these captivating little animals. The book provides plenty of facts, but is easily readable, and thankfully, not encumbered with vague scientist's jargon (though, apparently Mr. Graves has the credentials to do that). The photos are really good, and made me miss being able to watch the prairie dogs' hilarious antics up close. Good book for almost all ages, and good for the coffee table, too!
Outstanding writing and photography.......2002-07-22
The author talks about the life of the prairie dog, and how it interacts with humans in the modern West. The book is illustrated with gorgeous photographs. This book is an excellent purchase for a readable overview about these animals. If you want to know the full details on how prairie dogs get along with each other, check out the Hoogland book on social behavior of prairie dogs. It is great, but not as easy to read as this one!

Vividly illustrated with more than 100 color photographs, The Prairie Dog: Sentinel Of The Plains also contains highly informative text about the nature of these gregarious rodents, and how they function in the prairie ecology, from aerating the soil with their burrows to controlling invasive types of vegetation with their grazing. The delightful illustrations show the prairie dog's natural exuberance and social life, but the text warns that human poisoning and extermination has vastly reduced the prairie dog's numbers to the point where the species could be at risk. The Prairie Dog is very highly recommended for anyone with an interest in prairie ecology.

Don't get it.......2006-08-30
Get the other guidebook 'The Bugaboos - One of the World's Great Alpine Rockclimbing Centres' by Chris Atkinson and Marc Piché.
It is vastly superior to the Green guide, being written by the ex-Kain hut custodian. It has many more pictures, a thorough description of approaches, descents, equipment, weather, history, maps, etc. If you buy in Canada it runs for about $40 CDN.

One and only guide book to the Bugaboos with topos........1998-08-24
For anyone going to the Bugaboos to climb, this book is a necessity: it is the only source of information on routes in the area, with detailed topos.
Cons: some topos are incorrect (ex: Tiger's Trail). Also, new routes have gone up since 1990.

Henkin and Holiday offer a very useful book about BDSM for mainly beginners in the scene but also for anyone who just like staying on top of opinions about BDSM. The book is well organized with a glossary right after a good discussion of special terms used in BDSM. Likewise sample negotiation forms are found at the end of the chapter where the procedure is explained. The largest section of the book concerns safety but not necessarily the kind you might find in "On the Safe Edge" or "Learning the Ropes". Here the focus is on learning about yourself first, learning about your partner second, and then how to explore BDSM. Throughout the idea that BDSM is primarily a pleasureable partnership is embraced and indeed in my personal experiences the best SM or Ds relationships are partnerships. Neither Henkin nor Holiday say that their way is the only way but they give solid reasons for their opinions and make suggestions based on years in the scene and as scholars and educators. If you are exploring the lifestyle, this book is a good general overview of what to expect. But, as with any "how to" book, real life experiences vary. This book is very explicit and informative. It is tastefully written to inform the reader, not tantilize. The book accomplishes its objective.

The book was very well written. For those that are new to the lifestyle it is a good starting book, as it explaines what to learn as to what you and your partner like. For those in the lifestayle sometimes it is a good thing to review and learn something new from a book that has been revised.

The authors display a considerable breadth of knowledge and a wonderfully tolerant and open attitude toward all forms of BDSM play. The book is easy to read and follow and covers SM "basics," including fundamental concepts like safe words, limits, negotiation, and consent. The book contains good, if somewhat limited, descriptions of basic SM play (bondage, spanking, clamps, etc). There is also a good section on finding partners and how to find the SM community, along with a bibliography.
The authors did a wonderful job putting this book together.

Well no technics no tutorials. But inspired book with alot of reallife projects from global companies and individuals with short explanations. Have fun.

Extremely disappointed with this. Save yourself the time and just go hang out at .... You'll get a lot more insight into making great motion graphics.
Basically, there's a small section on each design studio, with one page devoted to each project they think worthwhile. There's very little about why or how they did a certain piece. Most pages have a single paragraph on the piece shown, which usually isn't very informative.
It's useful to get the names of design studios so you can go to their web sites and look at some good portfolios, but beyond that I'm not sure what else to do with it. It's mildly inspirational, but with so many web sites offering video clips of great pieces, it's difficult for me to get excited about screenshots. A CD with the pieces shown on the pages, would have enhanced the value of the book.

Basically, each page of the book has a different design studio, a few pretty pictures of stuff they've done, and a few paragraphs (and sometimes not even that) about why they think they're special... and occasionally, they spend a paragraph talking about their design philosophy.
Very little about why or how they did a certain piece.
It's useful to get the names of design studios so you can go to their web sites and look at some good portfolios, but beyond that I'm not sure what else to do with it. The best thing about this book is that it walks the walk. Most books on such an over-hyped subject fill their pages with lots of prattle and jargon but here the possiblities and accomplishments in motion graphics are illustrated, demonstrated and explained. If someone's looking for true information and inspiration, they should get this book.
A bit disappointed..........2000-05-02
While I do like this book I was really expecting a bit more. What I was most looking forward to, the "top creatives' thoughts and techniques", are brief at best. Each section has a few paragraphs about the designer or design firm whose work is showcased, then screenshots of the projects are annotated with a few sentences about each project. Visually it's great and a good source of inspiration, but I didn't find the exploration of motion graphics concepts that the book and author indicated were present...

Excellent analysis of the new era of regulation........1998-12-13
Vogel tackles the paradox that, as the neo-liberal revolution sweeps through world markets, new forms of regulation are called for to avoid the excesses of unfettered global competition.
He draws his empirical evidence primarily from the UK (a key country) and Japan (which is still resisting full liberalization) - while also focussing on the telecoms and financial services sectors.
He has a chapter analysing developments in all the other key economies.
Although it would have been good if he could have given developments in the USA as much space as he gives the UK and Japan, there is enough material in this rich book to satisfy anyone interested in the relationship between economic liberalization and new regulatory needs.
