Book Description
Capitalist globalization has been instrumental in globalizing civil and political rights all over the world as a condition of 'free' markets and trade, but capitalist globalizers have no answer to the rapidly accelerating demands for universal economics and social rights, expressed in the enormous growth of local, national, multinational and global NGOs and anti-globalization movements. In this book, based on his highly successful Sociology of the Global System, Leslie Sklair focuses on alternatives to global capitalism, arguing strongly that there are other alternative futures that retain and encourage the positive aspects of globalization whilst identifying what is wrong with capitalism. The negative aspects of capitalist globalization are explored in a new critique which argues that there are two main crises of capitalist globalization: the class polarization crisis and the crisis of ecological unsustainability. The book also presents a new analysis of a long-term alternative to global capitalism: the globalization of human rights.

A Brief History of Neoliberalism
ASIN: 0761940146 |
Book Description
'Robotham offers here a clear-headed exposé of the limits of classical liberalism in the face of world production today. His theme is both urgent and iconoclastic. There is an unusual clarity about the exposition and a drive that comes from passionate engagement combined with long experience, reading and reflection'
-
Keith Hart, Goldsmiths College, London
In
Culture, Society and Economy, Don Robotham examines the failure of recent social theory to grasp the problems of globalization and the emergence of corporate monopoly capital, and sets out his own argument for a radical solution.
He argues that the neglect of economics by both cultural studies and social theory has weakened the ability to develop viable alternatives to present day capitalist globalization. With deep awareness of, and reference to, current events and contemporary trends, the author presents a detailed critique of:
- cultural studies, in particular Stuart Hall and Paul Gilroy;
- Giddens' theory of 'risk society';
- Scott Lash and John Urry's 'economies of signs and space';
- Manuel Castells' theory of 'network society'.
The final chapters make a unique argument that the solution to the problems of globalization lies in more globalization rather than adopting an anti-globalization or 'localization' position. Don Robotham proposes more effective centralized institutions for governing the world economy, in other words - world government.

Customer Reviews:
Butchering Deer.......2007-02-19
An excellent reference covering much more than just the butchering aspect.
The book discusses handling the meat from the time of the kill. the handling in the field, the proper way to gut the deer, protecting the meat from contamination from insects, proper aging, and finally a step by step discussion on butchering, wrapping, and storage.
I give this book Five Stars. The gutting aspect differs from many other books and in my opinion is superior to other methods. I found this most informative.
A Must Own For Any Hunter!.......2007-02-04
This easy to understand book not only educates the reader on the actual butchering of his game, but gives advice on how to make that meat all it can be before it hits the table! The illustrations and photos are the best part of this book. Like a bible for game butchering, this book will save me time in the field and money from bypassing the processing shop!
Needed more pictures .......2006-03-17
This book was well written but it lacked pictures to show what he was talking about. I had to read some parts more then three time to understand how to hold the knife and how to make the cuts.I think if you have done this before this book would be for you ,but if your new at this find a step by step book with pictures.

Book Description
Lighthouses have guided sailors, adventurers, and dreamers throughout the world for centuries. And a very important lighthouse stands tucked beneath the great gray span of the George Washington Bridge on the Hudson River. This timeless and thoroughly charming story reveals how the proud little red lighthouse learned that even though it was very small, it was still mighty.
"Told in the age-old rhythmic style of folklore, this story of modern times is unusually successful."--Saturday Review
Customer Reviews:
Great book.......2007-05-07
This is beautiful book with a fun story that my almost 4-year-old son really enjoys.
What a great story for little guys and girls.......2007-03-09
I was given this book by a friend at my shower. My little boy is now 2 1/2 and this book is in the regular rotation of stories. I chose to read this book to my sons class and gave each of them a copy for their libraries. It is a great story about how size doesn't matter and that even the littlest lighthouse has a very important job. Some fo the language is a bit dated, but otherwise, the story is current for today. By the way, we will be touring this little light house under the George Washington Bridge this coming Spring -as testament to its importance, it still stand there today.
The Little Red Lighthose and the Great Gray Bridge.......2005-09-29
Anyone who loves lighthouses will love this book. I Love the way the author makes the Lighthouse, Bridge, and boats come to life as though they are talking to each other, and how important Lighthouses are to navigation.
"A Great Book" Said Josh.......2005-04-24
I don't normally read picture books unless I'm hanging out with little kids but Josh (aka Bradley Whitford) mentioned this one on The West Wing as "a great book" so of course I had to read it. The story is in the same vein as The Little Engine That Could but is about a little red lighthouse who guides the ships on the Hudson River. One day, a great gray bridge is built over the little red lighthouse and he starts to feel useless and unimportant. But by the end of the book, he has learned that even though he is small, he still has great worth.
Like Josh says, this was a great book. If I had read it as a kid, I think I would have loved it to pieces. It's wonderful because of its implicit lesson - that even those who are small can accomplish significant goals and make a difference in the world. I can see why kids loved it and hopefully, kids are still reading it. I'd recommend it if you get a chance to read it. It gets five stars both for the book itself and the enjoyment I experienced reading it.
Most memorable book of my childhood.......2004-11-26
The Little Red Lighthouse and the Great Gray Bridge is my favorite book from childhood. I spent the beginning of my life in Manhattan, NY right by the Hudson River. This book felt like it had special meaning to me since it was so nearby. But even if you live in California or England or China this book is still fantastic and wonderful and leaves you feeling good about the world and about yourself. Read this book to a kid today.
