India's Emerging Economy: Performance and Prospects in the 1990s and Beyond

India's economy over the last decade looks in many ways like a success story; after a major economic crisis in 1991, followed by bold reform measures, the economy has experienced a rapid economic growth rate, more foreign investment, and a boom in the information technology sector. Yet many in the country still suffer from crushing poverty, and social and political unrest remains a problem. These essays by leading academics, policymakers, and industrialists -- including one by Amartya Sen, the 1998 winner of the Nobel Prize in economics for his work on poverty and inequality -- examine the facts of India's recent economic successes and their social and cultural context.

India's rate of economic growth after the 1991 reforms were instituted reached a remarkable 7 percent for three consecutive years, from 1994 to 1997. Several contributors to India's Emerging Economy ask what this means for the nation as a whole. In his essay "Democracy and Secularism in India," Amartya Sen argues that economic progress is not the only way to measure a nation's performance. Other essays examine the actual effect India's economic growth has had on reducing poverty and recommend policies to empower the poor. Essays also address such issues as globalization and the vulnerabilities and opportunities it creates, India's experience with monetary and fiscal reform, the rapid growth of the information technology sector (including a case study of India's software industry), and India's grassroots economy.

Since I don't work in Meat this book is obviously not worth the money. While I enjoy eating meat quality control on meat is not that important to me. But I also think cows being slaughterd is funny and really tasty. To quote shakespeare, "To Be Or Not To Be..." Now don't I sound smart.

Good directions, but not very detailed maps.......2004-08-11

I bought this book, because I visited the area in June and want to go back in November. This is challenging wilderness to naviagate, and I wouldn't suggest you do it without a GPS. I too wish that the maps had been more detailed, the Tellico Plains map available through the Ranger station is more so. It is a great book, just was hoping for more knowledge gained, and it basically told me what I already know.

Hiking Trails of Joyce Kilmer-Slickrock and Citico Creek Wil.......2001-07-02

Tim Homan has done a great job of describing the trails of the Joyce Kilmer-Slickrock and Citico Creek Wildernesses. Although the format is more oriented towards a readability style rather than a guidebook style, all the essential information was there and in a clear concise manner. He includes several maps that are useful, but I would have given it a higher rating if the maps had been more detailed.

Great trail guide; very accurate and informative.......1999-02-12

Homan delivers a comprehensive and usuable trail guide-one of the best I have seen. A recent trip to the area he describes would not have been as successful without it-like where to find a water source near our camping site.

Very Good for Beginner-Intermediate Learners.......2007-06-26

I am admittedly new to learning Japanese (but not, however, new to foreign language study), and these may be caveats to readers of this review.
I have found this book to be very enlightening, and see that a lot of thought and effort have been put into making it. Its forty lessons, eight reviews, and 5 readings provide a wealth of material in considerable breadth and depth, and it presents the student with plenty of Japanese in a methodical, progressive teaching method. Both kana syllabaries are taught, as well as 174 kanji. There is even an interesting article near the end of each article presenting a little bit about Japanese culture.
This is not a college freshman Japanese textbook, and so it goes less into language theory and so forth than that to which college or university students may be accustomed. If there were more I would wish for, it would be more drill. A workbook may have been a good companion for this book.
I mistakenly ordered the text only (and had to order cassettes separately), and would recommend that more serious students considering purchasing this that they get the book and cassettes as a package.
It's a quality book. For as much as it has to offer, considering the reasonableness of its price, I think few who are interested in Japanese language and culture would be disappointed with it.
(From this onward is an amendment of my previous comments):
I still stand by what I wrote above. I may have neglected to note that I am studying Japanese independently, i.e., through self-study. With that qualification having been made, I point out that I have become marginally more aware of Japanese and its usage, nuances, etc., and thus would point out that the author seems to focus on colloquial spoken Japanese, as opposed to written form. I have no vested interest in selling this book, but I still have zero regrets for having purchased it. I hope those interested in Japanese find this review helpful.

While the course book is well organized and comprehensive (although you will need your own dictionary. The Living Language books have terrible glossaries which do not even contain all of the words from the vocabulary lists), it is very difficult to get past the ridiculously childish, affected way in which the narrators--particularly the women--speak. You will not hear and adult woman's voice except in lesson 30. All the others sound as if they are breathing helium and talking to you as if you were in a nursery.

Japan is notorious for the infantile "women's speech," but not all Japanese women behave this way. I have lived there and speak from experience.

The narration on courses produced in Japan, such as Kodansha's "Japanese For Busy People" or Gakken's "Japanese For Today" are far more natural and actually sound like mature adults.

Great way to learn a language.......2007-01-11

This CD/Book was a Christmas present for my son. He really loves the CDs and the book. He says the book is very helpful and especially likes the chapter reveiws that are in the book. The CDs help perfect your accent and also help to get your ear used to hearing the language. Was well woth the price.

The format of the book teaches not only words, but sentence structure, formal/informal word usage and the culture behind the Japanese language. The CD's and exercise allow you apply the knowledge you just learned.

Good, but requires reader's effort.......2004-12-06

Well, I am just about to finish Lesson 27(of 40), good set but could have been better. Firstly, this book requires dictionary look-ups on your own. Secondly, it does not give all hints. Guesses are sometimes needed. Thirdly, should have put accents on whole lesson, including grammar. Should have printed with double spaces, so I can insert notes.
Overall, good set. This book is pretty extensive on grammar, but should have shown the bigger picture before things getting complicated. I need other books to help me, but I like the pace this book is setting.
Total 40 lessons, each with conversation text, grammar, notes, vocabulary, exercises, Hiragana and Kanji text for lessons 21-40. Mostly in Romaji, but should not be a problem. Since in the end, Kanji is the target, not just Hiragana. CDs are good, two sets, one set for home, one for places without a textbook.

According to Khatibi, In Arabic it is said, 'the pen is one of the two tongues.' In Islamic calligraphy it is not only the pen, but the history that manifests from it. Neither can be fully presented without the other.

In the book the fabulous imagery is combined with intellectual discussion that evaluates history with respect to both Islamic views and contemporary classifications of language.

The schools of styles are also traced throughout their emergence in dynasties including the AlMorvarid to the Abbasid dynasties. Lastly, the work of the most contemporary are explored touching on the the new styles of some of the greatest Iranian and Arab artists.

This is a beautifully presented book on Islamic Calligraphy. While providing background material and being informative, it also has many and varied examples presented in color. I did not know what to expect when I ordered it, but as soon as I opened it I was bowled over. This is a must for anyone who appreciates Islamic art, or for anyone who would like to learn more of the history behind it.

It has a detailed chronological format for those wishing to us it as a research aid. All round value, especially the calligraphic family tree on the back cover.
