Book Description
Written by leading scholars, these case studies represent an unprecedented attempt to analyze the role of the law in the global movement for social justice. They combine empirical research with innovative sociolegal theory to shed new light on a wide array of topics. Among the issues examined are the role of law and politics in the World Social Forum; the struggle on the anti-sweeping movement for the protection of international labor rights; and the challenge to neoliberal globalization and liberal human rights raised by grassroots movements in India and indigenous peoples around the world.

Book Description
"
Signals, Sound, and Sensation is of great importance to the hearing science community... If I were to give an advanced course, this is precisely the book I would recommend." (
W. Dixon Ward, University of Minnesota)
This is a unique book on the mathematics of signals written for hearing-science researchers. Designed to follow an introductory text on psychoacoustics,
Signals, Sound, and Sensation takes the reader through the mathematics of signal processing from its beginnings in the Fourier transform to advanced topics in modulation, dispersion relations, minimum phase systems, sampled data, and nonlinear distortion.
While the book is organized like an introductory engineering text on signals, the examples and exercises come from research on the perception of sound. A unique feature of the book is the consistent application of the Fourier transform, which unifies topics as diverse as cochlear filtering and digital recording. More than 250 exercises are included. Many of them are devoted to practical research in perception, while others explore surprising auditory illusions generated by special signals. A working knowledge of elementary calculus is the only prerequisite.
Signals, Sound, and Sensation will help readers acquire the quantitative skills they need to solve signal problems that arise in their everyday work. Periodic signals, aperiodic signals, and noise - along with their linear and nonlinear transformations - are covered in detail. More advanced mathematical topics are treated in the appendices.
In no other book are signal mathematics and psychoacoustics so neatly intertwined. Researchers and advanced students in the psychology of auditory perception will find this book indispensable.
Customer Reviews:
Good application of signal processing theory to psychoacoustics.......2006-06-13
This book very much resembles an engineering textbook. It is written on the premise that a fundamental element in the science of sound as it is perceived is the signal. Thus, scientists who understand the mathematics of the signal are better prepared to develop and understand models of psychoacoustical effects. Therefore, this is not intended to be a first book on the either the subject of signal processing or psychoacoustics. Rather, this book attempts to join the two subjects.
This is very much a signals and systems type book, except that all of the signals and systems described pertain to audio and its perception. The quantitative emphasis in this book is underscored by the exercises at the end of each chapter. The author assumes that the reader has a fundamental understanding of calculus. Using that as a basis, the reader will learn a great deal about differential equations, Fourier transforms, and linear algebra, as these topics are covered in depth as they are needed. Throughout the book, topics that may seem elementary to those with an engineering background are interspersed with applications to acoustics and psychoacoustics that the reader may not be familiar with, so chapters should not be overlooked just because their titles convey the idea of remedial material. For example Chapter 6, on the perception of complex tones, at first looks like a simplistic tutorial on sampling theory, but it leads up to the interesting Shepard tones and the Tritone Paradox.
Along with the basics of tone and characteristics of sound, there is detailed coverage on the Fourier series and integral, signal processing, random processes and noise, and modulation, all discussed within the framework of applying these subjects to acoustics and psychoacoustics. Thus, some chapters are very mathematical while others are very conversational. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who has prior knowledge of both signals and system theory as well as acoustics and psychoacoustics. There is no other book I know of that is as good as this one at explaining the mathematics of psychoacoustics.
Hard stuff.......2004-11-09
I read the book and it was quite a bit of hard work. I can only recommend to people who love maths. For all others, especially biologists and people more interested in the biological things: it is not worth the money.
If the author would use a more coherent and explaining style of writing and reduce formulas for every single detail it would be much better.
A Unique Book on Auditory Processing.......2000-12-19
This book fills a large gap between signal processing and psychoacoustics. Standard signal processing books have in-depth coverage on Fourier transform, filtering, etc., but say little about what various signals mean to our ears. On the other hand, psychoacoustics books lack necessary mathematical rigor and insight for people who want to understand underlying computations. The book is written with remarkable clarity and rigor, and yet accessible to readers with just basic knowledge of calculus. The book does not just state conclusions but goes through the trouble to show how they are or can be derived, which greatly enhances understanding. An ideal book for people interested in auditory computations, and a required reading for my students in Ohio State Computer and Cognitive Science. I highly recommend it to anyone with an interest in acoustic processing and auditory perception.

With everything there is to know about the game, this indispensable guide is like having a golf pro by your side at all times. Where better than an official publication of the United States Golf Association to learn the rules of golf? Only here you will find the updated complete regulations as revised in 2003 and more than 100 illustrations designed to make understanding them even easier. Best of all, there's a particular emphasis on those situations that always seem to cause difficulty for golfers of all skill levels. There are also explanations of when and how you can legally improve your lie, winter rules, and much more. Whether you're engaged in stroke play or match play, in a friendly foursome or fighting for your club championship, a knowledge of the rules will increase your enjoyment of the game--and maybe even take a few strokes off your score.
Customer Reviews:
This book is NOT by the USGA, it is the "Royal and Ancient" .......2005-04-04
The Editorial Reviews Product Description is wrong for this book. It is described "Where better than an official publication of the United States Golf Association to learn the rules of golf?"
Except that this book is the "Royal and Ancient" rules for golf *outside* North America (note the royal seal on the cover). It is not by the USGA at all and clearly states on the book that it is for European Rules (despite Tiger being on the cover, I don't know what's up with that).
That said, it is a well presented and very good overview of golf rules, many of which I'm sure apply in the US. Just don't assume this is the USGA talking.

More than just a book, a pratical guide, or a refernce manual, The Illustrated Golf Rules Dictionary is as essential to golfers as a putter and a good pair of spikes. This book is for anyone who ever wondered "what do I do in this situation?" - in other words, anyone who has ever played the game.
Photos and illustrations accompany entiresm and color-coded keys explain basic rules, penalties, and procedures for the real-life problems that many golfers experience.
Improve your game by gaining a complete and accurate understaning of the many rules and quesitons encountered in this sport. A must-have for the beginner as well as the experienced player, this compacet guide is consulted by TV commentators, tournament committees, professional golfers - and many golf schools - in addition to many golfers all over the world.
Customer Reviews:
Invaluable..........2004-03-13
Quite simply the best reference book on the rules of golf I've ever seen. The simple alphabetic order, easy readability, colour coded layout of its explanations (including numerous practical examples), and excellent cross-referencing mean that the rules applying to virtually any situation you encounter on the course can be accessed and understood in a couple of minutes max - often faster. I can't think of a situation, no matter how obscure, that it's failed to deliver on. Its speed of referencing and compact size mean that you can carry it in your bag and use it "live" to quickly solve any confusion or misunderstanding. An excellent and invaluable golfing aid.
For golfers of every level.......2000-10-10
This is a great way to learn the rules of golf, and the exceptions! The way the book references rules makes it perfect for all levels of golfers and a wonderful way to discuss and exchange ideas.
Amazon.com
As if it weren't hard enough just to hit fairways and greens, the rules that encumber golf have so mutated from the original crisp 13 that today's rule book is about as clear, concise, and free of jargon as a set of Defense Department specifications. Even seasoned tour pros shake their heads before seeking the counsel of the rules committee. Golf Rules Illustrated presents an attractive and convenient alternative to setting up a direct hotline from your golf cart to a USGA official. It breaks down the entire rulebook into 10 subject areas. Easy-to-follow subheads connect you directly to the situation at hand, be it order of play, loose impediments in a bunker, abnormal course conditions, or when to hit provisional balls. Greg Clarke's lovely illustrations provide the right accent--decidedly brogue--and light touch, and the book is the right size for stowing in one of the pockets of your golf bag, so--like that telescoping gizmo you carry to fish balls out of the water--it'll always be there when you need it. --Jeff Silverman
Book Description
This book clarifies and simplifies the rules for all players -- from beginners to club champions -- using original illustration to illuminate all the key points. Focusing on common situations that occur during most rounds on most courses, Golf Rules Illustrated describes major rules and explains how to apply them during play. Having mastered these rules, golfers can navigate friendly and competitive rounds alike with confidence and greater enjoyment.
Customer Reviews:
golf rules demystified.......2001-04-23
Golf Rules Illustrated was written with both beginners and low handicappers in mind. Browsing through its pages you can see that unlike the Rules of Golf, technical terms are seldom used, and it doesn't follow the legalistic manner on how rules are defined by the USGA, which usually leaves us scratching our heads.
Instead what we get are simple, straightforward explanations of the rules, and to make things even easier, illustrations (featuring Scottie IV, the rules terrier, drawn by Greg Clarke) are provided. I especially liked the way the book is arranged. Situations golfers are most likely to end up in are the first to be given priority. So right off the tee you'll have discussions on four areas: Out of bounds, lost balls, water hazards, and lateral water hazards. If you find yourself in a water hazard, these are the options available to the golfer according to the book:
A caveat to the reader: this is a book presented by the Callaway Golf Company, embroiled bitterly with the USGA, because of...well, the rules. The USGA wants the rules to be followed no matter what, whether you are Tiger Woods playing at Augusta or a weekend hacker playing at a rinky-dink golf course in the middle of nowhere. On the other hand, Callaway seems to support the notion that the rules can be a little flexible when golf is played for fun. In fact there is a section in the book where it actually says it's okay to ignore the rules in certain situations. Now this can get you into a lot of trouble, depending how serious your playing partners are about their golf game.
Aside from that, I think any golfer will find this book insightful and find it a handy reference on the golf course.

Confusing Reviews.......2003-10-15
As a beginner, I was looking for a book that made instruction sound as simple as possible. I know how difficult golf is and have found some of the other instruction books way too scientific. They didn't make the game any easier. I read the previous reviews of this title and didn't know what to make of it as they were so diverse. Having now read the book I agree with those that rate it highly and totally disagree with the guy who gave it one star. I mean, he didn't even read it and seemed to be talking about an entirely different book. A book called 'Good Golf Made Easy'is obviously about instruction and not the rules of the game which he seemed to think. Anyway, I really enjoyed it and found the concepts pretty easy to grasp. It's not sophisticated and probably won't win any awards for writing but it has definitely helped my game. I'm going to supplement what I learnt in this book with lessons from my local professional but GGME has definitely given me a good start.
Confused.......2003-09-23
At the time of this writing, the only other two reviews of this book refer to "instruction" and how this book helped them improve thier play. However, unless I missing something in the title, this book is supposed to be about the "rules" of golf...not how to "play" golf. What gives? Should someone looking for a book on the rules of golf consider this tome or is it beter suited to someone desiring to learn the game? Either the book title is misleading or the folks who reviewd this book read something entirely different. Perhaps someone from the editorial staff at amazon could clarify this. The 1-star rating of this book is only posted to fulfill the requirement that one must rate a book before posting a review. I haven't read this book, but was only trying to read other reviews to help make a buying decision. In fact, this could be is a great rules book OR a great instruction book. It would be nice to know which it is.
simple, basic - perfect for the beginner........2002-11-22
I don't think the author would make any claim about this book being suitable for all golfers. Those who have been playing for years probably wouldn't get much out of it. But for people who are relatively new to the game I reckon it is perfect. I expected golf instruction books to be far too complicated for me but this makes the game sound relatively straightforward. And since buying this book not only has my enjoyment level risen, I have also broken 90 for the first time. If it's science you're after, don't get it. If it's simple, basic tips that avoid 'paralysis by analysis', which so many of my golfing friends suffer from, then this book will prove very helpful.
good golf made easier- tony dear.......2001-05-09
i have a lot of golf instruction books and this one i often go back to cause its simple and has very good little drills to keep your swing on track or to feel certain movements.great for total beginers and for double figure handicaps.

Customer Reviews:
the most wonderful book .......2007-06-08
This book was one of the most thrilling stories I heard a long time ago, but the more I read it and study the subject I realized how important is for our spiritual and future life, and even nowdays development...this author is guiding us through a marvelous and valuable knowledge...it is highly recommended for those who wonders about the world and its real future and for those depresing signs of destruction when the book tells us about construction and optimism...
beyond the rational.......2006-06-15
it is possible to read this for what it is and to split the reading into doubt. either is valid.
you either feel the sucking throttling of Hunab Ku...or you don't (yet).
i dislike new age fluff myself, but this isn't that...
read all the materials, the counter-arguments. then let it ferment. you'll figure it out.
celebrate this or not. but don't spin your wheels. unless that
is temporarily your path.
2006 and counting....!
Based On Occult Philosophies.......2004-09-08
This is a case where reading the reviews of other readers helped me understand my feelings about this book.
This book comes to conclusions about the Mayans that are heavily based on bizzare relationships between numbers. For me it was impossible to understand what he was talking about with all the numerology.
A lot of the Mayan art work contains monstrous creatures who are always frowning and looking sad. That's probably a warning about the possible dangers of getting involved with the I Ching. At the beginning of the book it states that some Jesuit monks had experimented with the I Ching and they went insane. (The I Ching appears in the tv show 'Dark Shadows' as a way to open doors to other domains.)
I wasn't able to read the last chapter because I started to sense the horrible occult energy coming from the book. Then I heard a voice say 'we are the keepers of the light'. I can't imagine who was telling me this.
This often happens when I read books which are based on occult or satanic ideas such as for example The Da Vinci Code.
On the positive side there are some beautiful illustrations that I think the author created himself. The author is certainly an unusual person who has a background in art history. Another reviewer said the author thinks he's a reincarnation of one of the Lords Of Time. Certainly anyone with such an intense interest in Mayan history must have had past life experiences as a Mayan. Maybe he's someone who was involved with the more mysterious aspects of this religion.
A breakthrough that has been eclipsed.......2004-07-13
When this book first came out it presented radically new ways to interpret history, time, and consciousness. Unfortunately Mr Arguelles became convinced of his identity as a reincarnated Pacal Votan (Lord of Time) and created another system of Mayan glyphs called the Dreamspell. Dreamspell is not based on the pure interpretation of the Mayan Tzolkin. It is an invention that detracts from the original Mayan teachings.
So while the book does provide some interesting introduction to the Mayan calendar it is based on imagined predicates of an incomprehensible Dreamspell system. The author has been changing this concept and his websites almost continually.
A more authentic source on this subject is by Carl Johan Calleman. His books Solving the Greatest Mystery of Our Time: The Mayan Calendar and The Mayan Calendar and the Transformation of Consciousness form the crux of an authentic system of study and understanding based on genuine MAYAN galactic concepts.
The Mayan Factor has simply been eclipsed.
Incoherent, unsupported.......2002-10-31
I wanted to give this book a chance, and wish I hadn't bothered. It reads like an acid ramble -- cosmic assertions tumble over startling insights, with no notion sustained beyond two sentences, properly connected to others, or backed by evidence. I kept waiting for him to settle down and present out some facts and build his case, but he just keeps laying bricks on air. I researched some of the more checkable facts, and found him generally wrong: for example, Isamu Noguchi's "The Sculpture to be Seen From Mars" looks nothing like the "face on Mars" (which was an illusion anyway), which he says shocked him into realizing the transmission of universal information. The irony is that despite savaging Western science as unable to understand the Maya, he is so absorbed in his own insights and revelations and discoveries that he never tries to see the Maya through their own eyes, as any good scientist would, and so fails to truly respect the subject he supposedly exalts.

I love this book.......2005-12-05
This book is beautiful! The anime characters featured are all girls- a cute style with big eyes (with the exception of 1 picture at the end of 2 boys). What attracted me most was the colors. If you are an artist like me, I always look for pictures that have very vibrant colors. I like blending 2 or more colors to the eyes, hair, and clothing of a character to give a picture a very professional look. This book does that. You can see how the colors blend together and fade into each other. Some of the pictures have color, fantasy, or modern lifestyle themes. If there is anything I am not too thrilled with, I suppose it may be some of the clothing. In some pictures it is very skimpy- but do not get me wrong, there is nothing inappropriate in this book. The pictures are all very beautiful. There are 64 color pictures followed by 12 pages of the black and white sketches of some of the pictures and the artist's comments on them. (All the pictures are by the same artist.) This book is well worth buying if you are an anime fan.
