Good Reference book. Not a text book that one can learn from........2007-09-06
I must confess that I have no prior knowledge of economics before taking a masters course in macroeconomics. I found it very difficult to learn the subject from the book. The book served me a good reference book. Its not a ideal text book.

As Econ texts go, this one is pretty straight forward and compact. It gets the point across in a small amount of space. The real world articles and analysis is very helpful. My professor was pretty bad for this course, so the book was a lifesaver.

A great book for the understading of Macro, and corelate the discussion with the real world. However, the book is not aimed towards the one who is looking for in depth mathematical derivations behind the macro policies. Very interesting to read.
Excellent Preparation for CFA Level 1.......2003-10-22
I am an employee at Merrill Lynch (I have my series 7,63,65,24,4), and currently studying for the CFA Level 1 Exam, however, my background is in Biochemistry and Biology so it is pretty obvious that I was behind my peers relative to our formal academic background. So, I felt that I needed a book that that could clearly communicate the macroeconomic policies that govern this country. However, because the CFA level 1 is a difficult exam, I could not afford to have the author dilute the information, or overly simplify the information. Fortunately, the literature provided in this book not only conveyed the information better, and clearer than, the actual CFA preparatory classes that I had been taken, but it was such a fun book to read. The beauty of this book is that it provides actual contemporay, and historic global examples to supplement the literature. Prior to reading this book, I had read other books on macroeconomic policy that were so dry that I could not even finish the chapters (and I had read some pretty dry books during my days as an undergrade pursuing my double major in Biotechnology and Biology), but this book was the type of book that I did not want to put down from the moment I started reading it. Furthermore, this book also assisted me in getting a better understanding of the markets (equities and real estate) for future investments as well. After reading this book, I am such a sharper investor, I can now dissect the nonsense from the valid information that is being promoted on TV and in magazines. I highly recommend this book for everyone who is interested in getting a deeper understanding of how our government works, and how our economy works relative to the rest of the world.

From the author: Expansion of the breeding distribution of the Fulvous whistling-duck (Dendrocygna bicolor) into the southeastern United States after the mid-1800s coincided with the establishment of rice (Oryza saliva) cultures in Texas, Louisiana, and Florida. In southern Louisiana, where approximately 80% of rice is aerially seeded in water, Fulvous whistling-ducks are suspected of feeding extensively on planted rice and are considered a nuisance. To determine the extent of rice utilization by ducks nesting in southwestern Louisiana, we estimated food availability in ricefields and assessed feeding preferences. We also examined effects of sex and stage of reproduction on food selection. Feeding sites in Louisiana ricefields that were tilled and flooded in preparation for spring planting, contained abundant foods (mean [+ or -] SE = 109.0 [+ or -] 18.0 g/[m.sup.2] especially seeds of moist soil plants such as signalgrass (Brachiaria extensa), beakrush (Rhynchospora sp.), and flatsedge (Cyperus iria). Diets of males and females were similar (P = 0.080), but varied through the reproductive cycle (P = 0.008). Consumption of plant material was slightly reduced during the period of rapid ovarian follicle growth in females; however, ingestion of animal foods never exceeded 4%. Fulvous whistling-ducks exhibited feeding preferences (P
< 0.001) with aquatic earthworms (Oligochaeta) and wild millet seeds (Echinochloa sp.) being preferred over other food taxa. Rice made up
<4% of the diet and was selected in proportion to its availability before and during period of rapid follicle development. Almost 25% of the diet of incubating females consisted of rice; however, we concluded that crop depredation by Fulvous whistling-ducks ([less than or equal to] 0.1%) was of minor importance relative to other potential sources of crop loss. Indeed, use of ricefields by whistling-ducks may actually benefit farmers if ingestion of seeds of undesirable plants reduces the need for costly herbicide treatments. Dragonfly guide review.......2007-09-17
I have several guides for birds, butterflies, snakes, reptiles and amphibians. I just started learn about dragonflies this year and this is one of the best guides I have seen. In fact, it was highly recommended by an individual who has a Masters Degree in dragonfly study. I recommend it for individuals just starting out with dragonflies as the photos are great but it also provides enough information (range maps) to let you narrow down and identify the more difficult species.
The Texas Odonata Bible.......2006-12-23
This field guide is the one to own. It covers not only all the dragonflies of Texas and the Southcentral US, but all the damselflies as well. The photographs are superb and this make for easy identification of species in the field. However, because of these pluses, the result is a rather sizable guide that is just a bit too heavy to really qualify as a handy field guide. If you can deal with its size and weight, it more than makes up for this handicap in thes helpful information it provides. The only drawback and the reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5, is because it is a tad less user friendly for the novice or non-professional (i.e. The species identification keys are a bit confusing). Nevertheless, it is destined to become the standard to measure all other guides.
A Complete Guide to South-Central Odonates.......2005-11-08
As an admirer of dragonflies and damselflies I was quite delighted to find this book by John C. Abbott. It is a mix of the very technical and (at least in part because of the 64 plates of magnificent color photos) the very useful for the non-specialist. The range maps are invaluable as a way of adding clues for the identification of similar species. The line drawings of anatomical parts are important in separating closely related species and the glossary of terms, the check list, and the large bibliography round out a very useful or even indispensable volume for the dragonfly watcher. In short, this book is a serious guide to an area with the highest odonate diversity in the United States. "Dragonflies and Damselflies of Texas and the South-Central United States" simply is a must for anyone interested in the odonate fauna of the five states involved. Its production, along with at least three earlier regional and national books on the subject, is a testimonial to the growing popularity of these beautiful and fascinating insects.
A serious book for the serious reader.......2005-08-20
This is not a book that you can skim; rather, it is one intended for the serious student of Odonata in Texas. Written by an acknowledged expert in the field, it covers everything you might want to know about the dragonflies found in Texas.
Be warned, though, that you cannot approach this book lightly. The author uses scientific terms liberally: you will have to spend time acquiring the vocabulary.
For the serious Texas "Odo-nut" this is an absolutely essential part of your library.

Everything you've ever wanted to know about papermaking and more. This book has a lot of detailed information about the history and techniques of papermaking all over the world, but is so detailed it can be very tiresome. Definitely reads more as a textbook than light reading.
