Great use o Games Theory explaining Microeconomics.
I enjoy to read the book. A must. Next edition I do suggest the authors includ more worked examples.Prof Douglas Gilson /Rio de Janeiro -Brazil

5 out of 5 stars exceptional.......2002-11-09

Truly outstanding micro book by two top NWU profs. It has it all, from basic supply/demand equilibrium equations to cournot, bertrand oligopoly competition models to game theory and beyond. The explanations are clear-crystal, including many examples based on recent happenings. Read this 1st and "Economics of Strategy" afterwards (and if you have time and the skills, Carlton & Perloff's Industrial Organization book) and you will be able to master underpinnings of sophisticated industry/business analysis.

5 out of 5 stars Good book with lots of great examples and clear explanations.......2002-08-04

This text book is used in University of Chicago Executive MBA program..., and I like the clear text. It is quiet interesting and engaging to read and good material to accompany the lecture. This textbook also have a lot of good examples.

Microeconomics are basic standard material of MBA program, so the materials are pretty much the same as any other Micro textbook. Talking about Supply and Demand, Price elasticity, production, costs, perfectly competitive markets, monopoly, market structure, etc.

What i like best is the clear text and explanation that is easy to discern even for me (after 16 years not attending school!), and the very FRESH SAMPLES talking even the most recent happenings in the business world. Yup. THE EXAMPLES are all fresh and interesting.

The mathematic is a bit intimidating for people who hate quantitative things.

So, if this is not your textbook, this is still worth buying and reading for the explanation and the examples there.

5 out of 5 stars This book is THE reason I passed the class.......2007-01-16

Last semester, I had to take a graduate level economics course having never even taken intermediate economics. (My program has weird requirements.) The book used in the class was Varian's Microeconomic Analysis. I can't say whether that was a good or bad book for someone with much more preparation. But for me, it was totally incomprehensible since I hadn't come across any of that stuff before.

On the recommendations of others, I checked out Nicholson's book, hoping it would give me the background needed to just pass the class. I found Nicholson's book to be disappointing, with many derivations stuck in footnotes. I should, however, mention, that the Nicholson copy I was given was of an older edition, so I'm not sure if the newer editions are better.

Anyway, I was feeling so desperate and by chance came across this book in the library. That day, my semester took a huge turn for the better. I finally could solve optimization problems! I finally understood the derivation of the Slutsky equation! Mathis and Kocianski explain everything SO clearly. Furthermore, they give you "cookbook recipes" for how to solve many of the problems you're likely to get on exams and homeworks. The problems I had to solve for homework and on exams were much more complicated, but the complicated part was in the details. The basic process to solve the problems was actually the same as the examples in the Mathis book. Once you master that process with Mathis's examples, you can generalize it to harder and more complicated problems.

Mathis and Koscianski also show you how the problem of the consumer is not unlike the problem of the firm, and problems of general equilibrium simply combine the two. In other words, they do a great job of showing the bigger picture while still teaching you the math involved.

Speaking of the math, this book requires calculus, unlike most intermediate textbooks. Yet the material is so clearly presented that I find the derivations to be easier to follow than in many intermediate textbooks. Furthermore, the authors don't unnecessarily complicate things by overloading on notation.

5 out of 5 stars Very useful introduction to microeconomics using calculus.......2004-08-27

This is a very special book. Nowadays, most introductory textbooks on microeconomics teach intuitions and models that are carefully designed to avoid the use of even basic calculus as much as possible. This is not necessarily a bad thing because most college students don't have much calculus. However, for those that have even a basic understanding of calculus, there is a lot to be gained by studying basic microeconomics using mathematical tools.

This is the rare introductory text specifically designed to teach using calculus. This is refreshing and can be quite exciting for advanced high school students, undergraduates, and even masters candidates who would like to use math to be introduced to utility theory, consumer optimization, market demand curves, demand elasticities, short and long run production issues, firm optimization, short and long run costs of production, market structures including monopoly, issues related to input markets, and equilibrium analysis.

Really, the use of math here does aid understanding. The writing is clear, the illustrations are helpful, and the equations are quite understandable even if you only have calc 1 in your repertoire.

Take a look, I think you will like it and get real value from it.

5 out of 5 stars Very good overview of microeconomic theory.......2004-07-01

When I took intermediate microeconomics I was assigned Microeconomics by Hal Varian, which from what I gather is the predominate book used by professors, however it shouldn't be. This book is a far better handling of intermediate micro than is the Varian book, or any others that I've seen for that matter. Most undergraduate books that I have seen shy away from using calculus to explain the theories, which is really unfortunate because calculus makes this fascinating field far less cumbersome and much more accessible. The first two chapters on reviewing calculus for economics are great and really help clarify the relevance of calculus to economics. I find that utilizing calc makes microeconomics a much easier field to understand and this book does that very well. The only complaint is that I have noticed a few errors here and there, like mislabeled graphs or a few misreferences to the wrong graphical explanations, but it is easy enough to realize from the context, it would be nice if these weren't there, but overall this is the best book for microeconomic theory I have seen.

                      Book Description

We know, down to the tiniest details, the molecular structure of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Yet despite this tremendous accomplishment, and despite other remarkable advances in our understanding of individual viruses and cells of the immune system, we still have no agreed understanding of the ultimate course and variability of the pathogenesis of AIDS. Gaps in our understanding like these impede our efforts towards developing effective therapies and preventive vaccines. Martin Nowak and Robert M May describe the emerging field of theoretical immunology in this accessible and well- written text. Using mathematical modelling techniques, the authors set out their ideas about how populations of viruses and populations of immune system cells may interact in various circumstances, and how infectious diseases spread within patients. They explain how this approach to understanding infectious diseases can reveal insights into the dynamics of viral and other infections, and the interactions between infectious agents and immune responses. The book is structured around the examples of HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis B virus, although the approaches described will be more widely applicable. The authors use mathematical tools to uncover the detailed dynamics of the infection and the effects of antiviral therapy. Models are developed to describe the emergence of drug resistance, and the dynamics of immune responses, viral evolution, and mutation. The practical implications of this work for optimisation of the design of therapy and vaccines are discussed. The book concludes with a glance towards the future of this fascinating, and potentially highly useful, field of study.

                      4 out of 5 stars A good introduction.......2001-04-09

This book is best described as the application of nonlinear ordinary differential equations to immunology and virology. It's primary emphasis is on understanding the time development of viral infections, drug treatments, and viral resistance of the HIV and hepatitis-B viruses.

The authors do a good job of describing the relevant equations needed to model virus dynamics. The book would be a good beginning for mathematicians interested in going into the field of mathematical immunology. And, even though it should be classified as a monograph, rather than a textbook, since there are no problem sets, students of mathematical immunology should find this book a useful introduction to the subject. In addition, the authors give a large list of references at the end of each chapter for further reading.

Mathematicians who need a background in the biology of the HIV virus will find a good discussion in Chapter 2 of the book. The authors give an historical summary of the origins and treatment of the virus in this chapter. This sets the stage for the mathematical modeling of virus dynamics in Chapter 3, where the authors define the basic reproductive ratio and write down a system of three coupled nonlinear ordinary differential equations as the basic equations of virus dynamics. They remark, though without justification, that an analytical solution of the time development is not possible, and so they use approximation schemes to solve the equations. The equations are a phenomenological representation of virus dynamics, and no attempt is made to relate the rate constants to the underlying microscopic properties/structures/processes of viruses. They do however discuss the empirical data associated with studies of SIV infections, and show convincingly there is a correlation between the initial growth of the virus and its value at equilibrium. They caution the reader that the basic model does not give the true reproductive ratio, and show how to correct for this by introducing time delays.

The efficacy of drug therapy is treated from both a mathematical and experimental viewpoint in the next chapter. This is a very enlightening discussion from the standpoint of the validation of the virus models.

The authors switch gears in the next chapter and talk about the dynamics of the Hepatitus B virus. Again, they do a good job of introducing the reader to the experimental evidence for the models of this virus.

In chapter 6, they bring in the contribution of the immune system to the basic equations. They assume that the reader is familiar with the concept of CTL responsiveness. The resulting equations are somewhat more complicated, and the authors show how the ubiquitous Lotka-Volterra equations arise with the virus being the prey, and the immune system the predator. No detailed phase space analysis is done however to study any of the equations in this chapter, which would have been useful to the reader.

The chapter on quasispecies is the most interesting one in the book, as the authors not only give a rudimentary definition of quasispecies, but they also give an indication of their complexity. Disappointingly, they mention the idea of mutation rates and their connection with chaos and self-organized criticality, but do not elaborate on this at all.

The Bonhoeffer's laws of anti-viral treatment are discussed in the next chapter and the authors show how to derive them using the basic model. The emergence of resistance during drug treatment is modeled by parameters which reflect the replication rates of the virus, but these parameters are again not connected with any underlying microscopic properties of the virus.

Some interesting dynamical behavior occurs for the case of multiple epitopes where the existence of quasiperiodic oscillations is shown to occur. They authors refer to this as "unpredictable" but they do not define this term in the book. The existence of quasiperiodic orbits in a dynamical system does not by itself make the system "unpredictable" or random of some sort.

This book is a very addition to the literature, and most importantly, it emphasizes the role of validating mathematical models experimentally, which takes on even greater importance given the medical ramifications of the topics in this book.

I found this to be an excellent book. In fact, in just my first night's reading of a few pages, I learned a lot.

I liked it so much I ordered some other nature and wildlife "How To..." books and have been very satisfied with all of them.

They are not too wordy, not too academic, they stay interesting and the photography is very good.

I had LOTS of "I didn't know THAT" moments.

I believe the authors are among the first to introduce hsing-i chuan (pinyin: xingyiquan) to western audiences. In presenting a complete core hsing-i curriculum, together with fundamental concepts and training, the authors textualize the bio-mechanics and forms behind the 5 fists and 12 animals. Also included are sections on hsing-i lineage, martial wisdom and philosphy.

This is mainly a reference material, as Books and DVDs do not make good primary instructional material for martial arts, so plan on attending a seminar or finding a good local school to get the most from this book.

A straight-forward guide, it provides coverage of the five elements and the twelve animals of Hsing-I and should be useful to beginners. Heaven knows, my copy has been well-used. The illustrations and descriptions of the movements are fairly easy to follow. It's not an in-depth coverage and does not claim to be, but it does present the basics and touches a bit on the history and philosophy behind the art.

4 out of 5 stars Strong introduction to Hsing-i.......1999-11-09

Allen Pittman and Rober Smith offer a simple, insightful introduction to the internal art of Hsing-I Chuan. A short history and some general guidelines are followed by a complete forms section including 5 Elements and 12 Animals sets. The book is not meant to be comprehensive, and it achieves its goal of giving the reader a real sense of what the art is about. The only down side is in comparison to Robert Smith's orignial Hsing-I book, this one comes out a bit the lesser. It is missing the pictures of the old masters, and their chapter of invaluable advice. It is also missing the two-man exercises and applications. Hsing-I players will want to have this book, however, as it gives a valuable reference in terms of forms comparison, and offers some valuable advice on the goals of practice. The final piece of which is :"Therefore, in order to best perfect your Hsing-I skills, always work hard and remain humble."

                            Book Description

The Zondervan NIV Atlas of the Bible is the most comprehensive Bible atlas available for personal and classroom study. It is designed for both quick reference and detailed study. The GEOGRAPHICAL SECTION presents the physical geography of the lands of the biblical world, from Egypt to Mesopotamia. Clear, detailed descriptions will give the reader a vivid picture of regions that are the backdrop of biblical history and that influenced, to a much greater degree than commonly understood, the course of that history. The Israel/Jordan region especially is discussed in depth. The Atlas divides the area into twenty-three natural regions and discusses physical features such as distances, topography, climate, natural lines of communication, soil types, agricultural uses, major sources of water, and role in biblical times. The reader can visualize the various regions with the help of "block diagrams," which provide a three-dimensional, bird's-eye view of each region. The HISTORICAL SECTION presents in detail the flow of biblical history in its geographical context and shows how geography influenced the course of biblical history. Each chapter in this section begins with a chronological chart for the period under discussion, allowing the reader to see at a glance how the history of Israel fit into the history of the Ancient Near East as a whole. A separate section on JERUSALEM traces the history and development of the city that is at the center of much of biblical history. A chapter on THE DISCIPLINES OF HISTORICAL GEOGRPAHY shows the reader how the actual sites of ancient cities are rediscovered -- an often complex process that stirs the imagination with the excitement of highly specialized detective work. An outstanding feature of the Zondervan NIV Atlas of the Bible is the GAZETTEER. This is an exhaustive place-name index that gives the exact geographical location for each name with the pages and maps on which the name may be found in the Atlas. In addition it gives a brief biblical/historical summary for each name , with Scripture references, and the modern-day name in Hebrew and/or Arabic. Several appendixes add to the usefulness of the Zondervan NIV Atlas of the Bible. - A two-page CHRONOLOGICAL CHART provides a quick overview of the history of the Ancient Near East. - A GLOSSARY of terms aids the reader in understanding the text without having to resort to dictionaries or encyclopedias. - A BIBLIOGRAPHY provides the reader with suggestions for further, in-depth reading of the study. - A SCRIPTURE INDEX and an INDEX OF PERSONS will aid especially the pastor and teacher. This is why the Zondervan NIV Atlas of the Bible will become the standard by which serious students will measure other Bible atlases.

I deplore shoddy workmanship on some of the maps. One good example is page 25: I can't readily see the difference among the same color family. Considering I'm a color expert, this is a big drawback. Soft yet vivid water-color technique may help improve the quality. Well, the problem may be with the printer rather than with the author.

The layout of the book in general, i.e., text and graphics, lacks good aesthetic quality. Better fonts and generous margins would help improve it by a great measure.

All in all, the book doesn't live up to its price. By the way, I must add that I have not read the text closely yet and am not disputing the scholarship of the author.

                                  Book Description

Animators need to know a lot about acting, but they dont need to know everything. Acting for Animators sorts out the acting theory that animators need, presenting it in a form and with references that are more relevant to the animators world. It explores the connections between thinking and physical action, between thinking and emotion; it provides the steps for an effective character analysis and the dynamics of a scene. Using references to animation and live action, acting principles are highlighted and explained. Plus, the accompanying CD-ROM provides explicit examples, including videoclips of improvs based on the seven essentials of acting and highlights of Rudolph Labans movement theory.

This revised edition is illustrated by Paul Naas, an animator and director whose work includes film, TV, video games, location-based entertainment, and Internet animation. He was one of the first animator/instructors hired by the Disney Institute.

Ed Hooks' books are a must have for anyone serious about Animation and/or any character based type of storytelling. After getting used to his concepts it becomes second nature to look at scenes and put the finger right on the problem, if it has any.

I wish I read this book years ago. I've been animating professionaly for years, but there's information in this book that has given me a different mind set into accomplishing what I need to create.
I've always been able to 'see' faults in my work and fix it without knowing consiously how I made the error in the first place. Now, after reading this book I take a new vantage point and can prevent any errors occuring (usually). I think my style of animation has changed a little too.

The book is fun to read and the chapters are straight to the point. Recommended to every animator.

5 out of 5 stars Groundbreaking, "must have" book for animators;.......2003-12-13

Mr. Hooks has succeeded in condensing years of experience teaching his internationally recognized Master Class "Acting for Animators" into a manageably sized and reasonably priced book & CD combination. This is an expanded 2nd Edition of a title first published in 2000 and now in use around the world, as a source manual and text book, by industry leading professional animators as well as animation students in the most highly regarded animation schools.

Traditional 2D, contemporary 3D, and experimental animators devoted to "telling a story" with their characters will relish the wealth of straightforward insight presented on topics critical to character design and animations development such as movement and body language, power centers, using psychological gestures, scene development, knowing the audience, and much more.

Dispersed throughout "Acting for Animators"- entertainingly illustrating the principals discussed in each chapter- are delightful little line drawn characters from the pen of renowned animator and director Paul Naas. And, not only does this unique and timely book contain a remarkable "Acting Analysis" of the groundbreaking and sure to be classic feature length animation "Iron Giant," it opens with a glowing forward by the film's Director, Brad Bird.

Ed Hooks is the original and still leading "Acting for Animators" teacher called upon by animation studios and schools in the United States and overseas. The contents of this book parallel his teaching perfectly.

Speaking as an animator in training and a Producer in action- who has had the good fortune to participate in Ed Hooks' recent Master Class in Denver after first meeting him as an acting student in California at the beginning of his now 20 year career as a highly regarded stage, tv & film acting coach- I say this is a "must have" for any animator who wants their work to stand out from the pack and grab the audience by the funny bone and/or the heart!

Consult "Acting for Animators" right along with Richard Williams' "The Animator's Survival Kit" and your animations will rock!

I was shocked at the personal attack the previous rater made on Mr. Hooks. They clearly have some personal emotional issues to work through and this is not the place. I wouldn't count their evaluation very highly. This little book is simpy packed with essential information on acting, specifically adapted for animators...I am an animator and have learned much from Ed Hooks. I particularly like Ed's friendly writing style. Hooks is known world wide for his excellent seminars and I've quoted him in my own books on similar subjects. I think it is very poor form for a person to make a personal attack when we're supposed to be rating the book. I noticed that they didn't have the guts to leave their name. This book is a seriously excellent source of ideas, technique and the underlying reasons why these things work in animation.

While targeted towards animators, non-animator actors will find this book useful. I am studying acting myself, as well as traditional hand-drawn animation, and read this book in less than a day, absolutely drawn into Ed Hooks' teachings. A wonderful overview of 'method acting' and other theories of acting. I lent it to my acting teacher, and even she learned some new stuff from it.

1 out of 5 stars the least useful animation book.......2003-09-26

Of all the books about animation I found this to be the least useful. The important stuff is so diluted that the reader has to go through several pages before finding something useful. The live action included in the cd was also disappointing. For example, you can find a sketch where a guy slap a girl's butt: how useful (and tasteful) is that? If you are into animation, you are much better off with Richard Williams's 'Animator's Survival Kit'or Frank Thomas''Illusion of Life'.

                                  5 out of 5 stars I'm glad I bought this book!.......2003-04-19

I've been working in animation for 7 years professionally and bought this book with some hesitation, based on the negative reviews here. As it turns out, I LOVE THIS BOOK! There isn't the polish and thickness that I'm used to seeing in other books, but the heart of it is extremely useful. If you want to create a film (student, festival, or even Hollywood) you need to know the contents of this book. Otherwise, nobody will really care about all the work you've done to animate your characters. Further, I've added myself to Ed's monthly newsletter email list. It's a terrific support for what he teaches in his book. I believe you can sign up for it at the Acting for Animators website.

2 out of 5 stars an overpriced book with thin content.......2002-11-24

I found the content of this book too thin to justify the price. There was really not much stuff in it that I didn't already know, which is a shame considering that I have never been trained in acting. As a character animator, I also find the title somehow decieving since most of the topic could be covered in any acting book and in most parts, it was not really animation related. I wish I had spent my money on a general purpose acting book with more content.
