Book Description
Microeconomics for Public Decisions is a revision of the Apgar/Brown Microeconomics for Public Policy text. It was revised after conducting interviews with students and former students (now practitioners), and asking them what economic concepts and methods they use most frequently in their jobs. Microeconomics for Public Decisions is designed to focus on essential principles and analytical techniques for making decision that affect the public interest. It blends theory with applications and discussions so students will understand how and why microeconomics is important, how to perform economic analyses, and how to evaluate economic analyses performed by others.

Book Description
This textbook is the most concise and readable invertebrates book in terms of detail and pedagogy (other texts do not offer boxed readings, a second color, end of chapter questions, or pronunciation guides). All phyla of invertebrates are covered (comprehensive) with an emphasis on unifying characteristics of each group.

Only Biology Course Text I ever read cover to cover.......2006-05-04
While Pechenik may have his faults - his prose is not one of them. There are times when his jokes are a little silly, but he's fresh and interesting.
This is a great book of the invertebrate phyla and was excellent for my intro to invertebrate zoo some years ago.
I later moved into Entomology, but only because the entomologists were so charismatic! Not to say that the Malacologist teaching this course wasn't - he just didnt have any money for me!
I've given my original third edition away - and will be replacing it with a 5th shortly. It's just a nice reference to keep, along with Brusca and Brusca.
Ok but not great.......2004-12-28
I took invertebrate zoology as my population/diversity requirement for my biology major and used this book. I thought that it would be easy. It wasn't. Unless you are really interested in worms or insects or crabs then there is a good possibility that you might not really like a class like this and would recommend taking a different population/diversity class instead. The class that I took included both lecture and lab examinations which I thought were rather difficult. It wasn't really my thing and I didn't really find it that thrilling.
The textbook includes the major phyla of the invertebrates: Molluscs, Echinoderms, Arthropods, etc; as well as several minor phyla and a number of invertebrate classes. The photographs are in black and white and there are a number of drawings of the anatomy of invertebrates, as well as many tables and graphs. However, the book is in my opinion a rather slim volume and much information about specific classes are families is largely omitted. Also, the book chooses to first present information about the different classes and orders in a phyla and then presents informations about respiration, digestion, and other bodily processes at the end of the chapter, which I found confusing. It would seem easier to just talk about the processes while discussing the specific classes or orders.
I wouldn't really say that this book is sufficient for the lab portion of a class like this. The drawings are ok and useful for identifying some slides and specimens, but you will probably cover animals in lab that aren't in the book. I used a general biology lab book when I took this class, but included very few slides that we actually looked at, and only about half of the dissections that we preformed. I would recommend buying a specific Invertebrate Zoology lab book, if you can find one.
If you pay attention in lecture and are good at drawing pictures of specimens in lab, then this book is probably suffient for you to do well in an invertebrate class. If you have problems paying attention in lecture and have difficulty telling one worm from another (like I did often) then you might want to check some other books out from the library that go into more detail.
Up to date, but some areas lack depth.......2000-05-04
I have used this text for an undergraduate invertebrate zoology course. I selected the text for two reasons: 1) the book is current, with a publication year of 2000; and 2) the author made an effort to address not only major phyla but smaller phyla as well.
This is a good book for a one-semester undergraduate course in invertebrate zoology, but if you are looking for anything more, you ought to consider other options, such as books by Ruppert and Barnes, or Brusca and Brusca, or Pearse and Pearse.
Pechenik does a good job in covering the water front of invertebrate diversity, though there are places where depth is somewhat lacking. As I taught my course using this book as the primary reference, I realized that Pechenik is more of an taxonomic lumper than I am. If you are a lumper you will enjoy this book's treatment of various groups (e.g., pentastomida, asteroids and ophiuroids, etc.). If you tend to be a bit more of a splitter, then you will find areas where you are not in line with the text's information.
The supporting illustrations are fine, though I wish there were a few more there. I understand that the author's goal was to produce a shorter book that is still rigorous enough to support college-level courses. He did an admirable job of that, but I found myself looking time and again to other sources for additional information for class.
A good book, but not one that "has it all."
Book Description
One of the classic works of marine biology, a favorite for generations, has now been completely revised and expanded. Between Pacific Tides
is a book for all who find the shore a place of excitement, wonder, and beauty, and an unsurpassed introductory text for both students and professionals.
This book describes the habits and habitats of the animals that live in one of the most prolific life zones of the world—the rocky shores and tide pools of the Pacific Coast of the United States. The intricate and fascinating life processes of these creatures are described with affectionate care. The animals are grouped according to their most characteristic habitat, whether rocky shore, sandy beach, mud flat, or wharf piling, and the authors discuss their life history, physiology, and community relations, and the influence of wave shock and shifting tide level.
Though the basic purpose and structure—and much of the text—of the book remain the same, content has been increased by about 20 percent; a multitude of changes and additios has been made in the text; the Annotated Systematic Index and General Bibliography have been updated and greatly expanded (now almost 2,300 entries); more than 200 new photographs and drawings have been incorporated; and an entirely new chapter has been added—a topical presentation of the several factors influencing distribution of organisms along the shore. This edition also includes John Steinbeck’s Foreword to the 1948 edition.
Customer Reviews:
I am a Marine Biologist and this is the best book for the West Coast - Period!!.......2007-02-23
This is a timeless classic, very readable as the author puts you in a place (rocky intertidal or a mudflat) and then describes the animals you will see. It is written with a wise eye and wry humor. The long lived sea anemone in Scotland that was done in after 80 some years by the "ineptitude of (we suspect) a botanist".
It is more specific to central California, but still useful in Southern Calif and the northern coast as well.
A timeless classic.......2005-11-27
This is an amazing book. It was a landmark in its time, and is still useful today.
A Slightly Defaced Masterpiece.......2004-08-18
This book, as it was written, is a masterpiece of natural history. It is a contribution to humanistic biology that has style and description that is uncrippled by the invidious academic flatulence of the professional "scientist". It makes no pretensions. It was written by a man fascinated by the tidal seashore and the animals found therein. Read it and read it well.
Then read "Beyond the Outer Shores" by Eric Enno Tamm an unconventional biography of Ricketts that does full justice to the man and the myths.
Having gone through these impressive volumes I hope you will join me in despising Stanford University Press for what they did to Ricketts before his death and for allowing David Phillips to desecrate his memory in Edition Five.
Still & always the classic.......2003-07-13
This is probably THE serious book to have if one is going to immerse oneself in the California intertidal. Originally produced by Ed Ricketts (of Steinbeck/Cannery Row/Log From The Sea Of Cortez fame) the book has been upgraded, revised, re-edited by a plethora of "co-authors" since Ricketts' untimely death. It still retains much of Ricketts' then-revolutionary Habitat focus, which will either work for you (it does for me) or annoy the hard-core systematists out there. This ISN'T a light book to lug into the field or a light book to read -if you are just day-tripping The UC Press has a number of smaller & more accessibly illustrated field guides that I would reccomend, But if you are seriously into mmarine Bio and have some time on your hands along the California Coastline, you owe it to yourself to get this book. Even here on the Coast of Maine and twenty years removed from the West I still fid myself referring to it...
The standard field guide for the Pacific Coast of the USA.......1999-05-19
I can't believe that someone else has not reviewed this excellent guide to the intertidal biota of the Pacific Coast. This book has set the standard for reference guides to marine life along the Pacific Coast, as well as other locations. It is much more than a field guide -- though it also serves that role. This book describes the intertidal zonation patterns of the Pacific Coast as well as the ecology and aspects of the natural history of the organisms that live there. The book contains good taxonomic references as well. This is the book that many of the country's marine scientists cut their professional teeth on. If you are interested in marine biology, the diversity of life, or the ecology of nearshore habitats, this book is definitely for you. The main strength of the book is the logical organization by type of habitat and vertical elevation on the intertidal zone. The main challenge of a book like this is to remain up to date, which the publisher has managed by producing revised editions on regular basis. This book is a must for any field or arm chair marine naturalist!

Biology of Gila Monsters and Beaded Lizards (Organisms and Environments)
ASIN: 1575240858 |
Book Description
Guide to the Amphibians and Reptiles of Japan covers all the herpetologically significant islands of the Japanese archipelago. Written for both amateur and professional herpetologists, it lists and describes all known species, giving the currently accepted scientific name, Japanese name, meaning of Japanese name, description for identification, range, and ways of distinguishing similar species. All but 9 of the 147 species are illustrated with color photographs suitable for identification, and range maps for all species are included. The annotated bibliography includes the few treatises in English and the major books in Japanese containing understandable illustrations.
Customer Reviews:
Good guide, but could be better........2007-01-03
This book is the only comprehensive English-language guide to the amphibian and reptile fauna of Japan published since 1907. The introduction is brief but interesting and discusses amphibian and reptile communities in historic and modern Japan, focusing on the dramatic and alarming changes which have recently occurred.
English and Japanese common names, identification, confusing species, distribution and range map, reproduction, and habits are covered for each species and subspecies (subspecies receive coverage independent of one another). Additional notes are given for many species. The habits and notes sections are particularly nice in this book, with threatened species usually having status addressed. Range maps are blobbed in, not locality dots. Voice is described for frog species.
One photograph of each but nine species/subspecies is lodged with each respective account. It would probably have been more useful for comparative ID purposes to provide photograph plates, and would have resulted in higher photo print quality. Although the frog pictures are excellent and the salamander pictures are of high quality, many of the reptile photographs are not so great. The publisher's description claims all photos are suitable for ID, but this is not true. The angles and lighting of many reptile photographs are not conducive to discerning important characters on many species. A few lizard and snake photographs are completely unrecognizable at the species level.
The single page bibliography lists nine major English- and Japanese-language works on the amphibian and reptile species in this region, but no other publications receive credit. No citations are used anywhere in the book. This makes sourcing the information (including human use, current status, and range) for each species impossible.
Although this is a strong guide book, it is overpriced for the content. One star was subtracted because of the many poor quality reptile photographs and the absence of much-needed citations. It does belong on the shelf of those with an interest in amphibian and reptile species of Japan since no other recent English-language work exists.
A Complete Guide!!!.......2004-09-20
This Book Is Complete Guide To Reptiles and Amphibians Of Japan , The Color photographs and maps is Wonderful and clear.
Book Description
A young girl learns she’s half mermaid and plunges into a scheme to reunite with her father in this entrancing, satisfying tale that beckons readers far below the waves.
For as long as she can remember, twelve-year-old Emily Windsnap has lived on a boat. And, oddly enough, for just as long, her mother has seemed anxious to keep Emily away from the water. But when Mom finally agrees to let her take swimming lessons, Emily makes a startling discovery — about her own identity, the mysterious father she’s never met, and the thrilling possibilities and perils shimmering deep below the water’s surface. With a sure sense of suspense and richly imaginative details, first-time author Liz Kessler lures us into a glorious undersea world where mermaids study shipwrecks at school and Neptune rules with an iron trident — an enchanting fantasy about family secrets, loyal friendship, and the convention-defying power of love.
Customer Reviews:
Exploring the Ocean -- a review by Rhea, age 11.......2007-10-12
Many things start to happen after Emily's first time underwater, in seventh grade swim class. She finds out she is a mermaid. Once Emily starts to explore the ocean, she finds out where her dad is. He's in the mermaid prison. She sets out in the ocean to try to free him. In the process, she is stopped many times by Mr. Beeston, the lighthouse keeper, Millie, her babysitter and hypnotizer, and the prison guards, and many other magical challenges.
The Tale of Emily Windsnap has a fun plot, but it is not very interesting. Though it is fantasy, there are some really unbelievable aspects about Emily, such as not being underwater her entire life. Emily does physically change throughout the story, but doesn't seem to grow much emotionally. Emily does become more aware of what is happening around her by the end of the book. Many things happen during the story. Because so many little things are happening, it pulls away from the real emotions and interactions with her dad. One very good thing about the book is that the setting is really described. While you read, you can really picture the setting.
great.......2007-08-20
i purchased this book for my 8 year old daughter. she didnt want to read it so i did (Im 44) i loved it and i hope i get my daughter to read it. i cant wait to read the next one!
The deep secret.......2007-08-15
If you liked the movie Aquamarine or the story of The Little Mermaid, you'll probably like this scaly fishy tale about a twelve year old girl with a big secret.
Emily lives with her mother on a boat, and on the day of her first ever swimming class at her new school, she discovers that she's different from her classmates. If she had ever heard of the group Styx, and their classic song Mr. Roboto, she might have sung:
I've got a secret that's been hiding under my skin
My mother's human, my father's missing, and now I have fins
So if you see me swimming freely, don't be surprised
I'm just a girl who needed someone, with something to hide
Exploring the wet element with her new-found talent, she finds a colorful and magical world under the sea, and meets a new BFF who helps her on a big adventure to find her father. Of course they meet all sorts of obstacles in their way, and come up against the dark cloud of the power-crazy water god who doesn't want her to have another bright (bright) bright (bright) sun-shiny day.
Fast and easy to read, this is one that should appeal to young readers up to the age of 12, especially girls, although boys may also find some parts to their liking.
Amanda Richards, August 14, 2007
A great read at any age!!.......2007-06-03
I am a middle school teacher and am always looking for fun and interesting read. I am finding that the world has hardened many of the stories for the 9-15 age range and have forgotten, that kids need to read to "escape" sometimes and dream. This is that book!!! My 10 year old loved it and is ready for the other two books. She told me I "HAD" to read it, so I did and remembered the joy of reading and escaping to another world of mermaids, that I believe all "girls and women" always love to see and dream off. Who of us has not pictured a pretty tail, long smooth hair and pearls a midst??? This is a must read at any age and great for any young reader or older reader too.
enjoy
TheTail of Emily Windsnap.......2007-05-30
This book is once of the best books I have ever read. It is full of mystery and action. It is about a girl who finds out she is a mermaid. She tries to find her dad and tries to find out who she really is. I would recommend this book for anyone ages 8-14!!

An Original.......2007-06-29
My father bought me the original edition of this book when I was an age group swimmer back in the 70s. Doc was light years ahead of the pack in his use of physics to analyze and improve on stroke and body position. I highly recommend it.The Waterproof Coach: The Waterproof Workout Book for Fitness Swimmers and Triathletes
Knows how to coach!.......2003-05-02
As someone who swam for the great Doc Councilman (What's up Doc? Elbows!) I can't sing his phrases enough. He was (and in many ways still is) a man on the cutting edge of coaching. An Olympic coach for the greatest - Mark Spitz, Jim Halliburton and many, many more! He studied the technique that brought out the sheer speed in a swimmer and applied it to the stroke and taught it so people could learn. In one summer I took 8 seconds off my 100 meter butterfly! Buy the book if you want to learn how to make a swimmer into a winner!
The best.......2002-01-07
Doc Counsilman was lightyears ahead of anyone in the sport and is still far ahead of most world class coaches in his understanding of swimming physics and mechanics. His discovery of propulsive forces generated by elite swimmers ranks as one of the greatest discoveries of sports biomechanics in the 20th century. The physiology and psychology parts of this book can be learned from other sources.
The book to get........1999-03-12
The New Science of Swimming book is one of the best books I've read regarding swimming. It covers everything from psychology to technique to physiology.
