The book is pretty good........2003-07-22
What I am trying to say here is you sit down and read it with your head. I don't understand why it is hard to understand the stuff in this book. I skipped 95% of the lectures. I missed one major exam(not counted in the end). But the final carried too much weight and it was really tough. I read this book only and I got a B.
Buy the Mankiw if you can!.......2003-06-16
This book has been a struggle to understand since the beginning. The explainations and definitions are described as if the author doesn't want you to comprehend the full meaning of the concepts. The examples are also terrible, it's like he's not trying to help us. Compared to the N. Gregory Mankiw book, this textbook is a bore.
Customer Reviews:
Inconsistent is an understatement.......2005-09-06
Even my professor agrees with me. I have taken both accounting and finance courses, and the disciplines complement each other, yet this book does an awful job explaining even the most basic economics concepts, and at times it's even contradictory to the concepts of the disciplines mentioned before. I consulted other economics textbooks and noticed that between them they recycle and repeat the same explanations of the concepts. Apparently this is a pedagogical deficiency in the way this discipline is taught; memorized concepts are useless if they are not understood, and when this is because they are not being well explained this is simply unforgivable and unexcusable, and this textbook is a prime example of how you do not teach. And I am a teacher, so I should know.
Overly simplistic.......2003-02-04
Parkin does a good job of introducing the elements, and is particularly helpful with the graphs. However, he labors, generally unnecessarily, concepts that are quite straightforward. He is not very good in the macroeconomic, especially fiscal and monetary, parts of the book. More applied examples would also have been helpful.
Excellent elucidation of economic concepts and curves........2001-06-14
Parkin does a wonderful job of explaining the intricate concepts behind microeconomics and macroeconomics. The emphasis of this textbook is on understanding, and Parkin clearly makes an effort to elucidate every graph and concept presented. Although Parkin's text overlooks the mathematics of economics, it is superb for an introductory level Economics course.
Through close reading of this textbook, I was able to fully understand economic terms and the graphing of economic forces (supply/demand curves, GDP curves, aggregate supply/demand curves, etc.) Parkin's explanation of each graph facilitated a true understanding of economics.
With excellent, easy-to-understand writing and extensive use of graphs, Parkin's guide served as an Economics bible, and I did not need any supplementary reading for the course. Although a little confusing in certain areas such as growth theory, as a whole, Parkin's text is undoubtedly the only textbook you'll ever need.
One of the best intro texts.......2000-06-12
Parkin's text is probably one of the best introductory textbooks for economics. The primary criticisms of Parkin's text seem to stem from its perspective on teaching economics. Parkin presents the full breadth of "high economics" - a means of analyzing and resolving problems of scarcity. Parkin stresses the underlying problems that the techniqiues of analysis are designed to address rather than merely reciting mathematical formulae that seem to exist in a vacuum.
Parkin's graphs and explanations are generally excellent and well worth reading.
To Parkin's credit, he clearly distinguishes between positive and normative conclusions of economics. Many introductory textbooks become dogmatic regarding the author's conclusions.
Some readers apparently do not like the additional information and text boxes that Parkin includes in this book. These criticisms appear to be misguided. One of this book's greatest strengths is that it is not afraid to admit that it is introductory. In many ways the best introductory texts are survey-type books that allow you to learn the language and primary concerns of that field of study. Further courses in price theory, public choice, welfare economics, antitrust, money & banking all rely on a strong conceptual understanding of basic economics. After reading Parkin the careful reader will be able to comprehend the primary considerations of economics and communicate with more advanced scholars in this field.

Vague and Weak.......2003-10-20
Of all the Economics textbooks I've ever used (and there have been many!) this has to be the worst. The content is watered down, inaccurate, and vague. Instead of laying a fundamental basis for further economic study, this textbook presents a wishy-washy definition-oriented primer to econo-speak, nothing more. Simplification _is_ to be expected in an intro text, but simplification taken as fact is misleading, and ignoring some topics (utility, for example) while explaining others without any context (business cycles, for example) is just counterproductive! Perhaps Parkin should've spent less time making this book pretty, left out the color tables, and inserted some real content!

Not A Good Book For New A+ Test.......2002-04-20
I read this book from back to front. I also have experience in the field so that help me a lot. If you are new to this I suggestion you look into something else. This book will help you on first test if you buy the unlock code which I did which cost [U.S. dollars] which they refund towards the test. I wrote and passed both test and found that this book lack a lot of information on second test. It covered the first test information but again why should have to pay them extra money for extra questions..?? To all people that are going to take test go to [another website] and get the exam brake down, that will help you understand what's on the test and than look for a good book, not this one. And also you should that the test is only 20 to 30 question and you only have 30 min to write this book is based on old test scheme.
New is better - check it out!.......2000-08-01
Charles Brooks is at it again and this time he may have scored an A+ with this package. Making marked improvements over that last set, Brooks gives the A+ test a run for the money. Brooks also has taken this opportunity to enable to pass another exam at the same time CET.
The main study guide is updated to the latest A+ and CET exams, matching objective for objective. Brooks enhances this new package by adding MAC information, which will be helpful outside the A+ and CET arenas.
The main book is packed with pictures, diagrams, tables, figures, learning objectives and keynote reviews. Brooks also includes information on Windows 98, which is not on the A+ or CET exams, but it is coming in the next generation.
The lab manual remains about the same, with 37 labs broken down in several sections. New areas are QBASIC, some system utilities like CkeckIT and again Windows 98 and MAC. Overall the lab manual is more complete in the exercises.
As with the previous package there is a cd-rom with only 40 questions and with an additional fee Mar Craft will unlock over 900 more. Also there are coupons included for reduce testing prices which may make for the questions.
Overall this is a marked improvement from previous efforts however unlocking all the questions may push this package over the top.

Corporate governance.......2001-09-07
Had hoped it would help with the modern business world but found it completely lacking in reality for the smaller business. If you are a large corporate who want to bring in consultants it may help but had nothing tangible to offer the realtime day to day issues.
Awesome truth about Awesome Purpose.......2000-10-08
A must for leaders and change agents. The book gives awesome insights of the evolution of culture, its power and how to align it towards business success. It allows you to understand culture and then seek to define the components. It clearly gives definition and meaning to the components driving a culture - purpose, values, direction, vision, mission, strategy, major objectives, tactics, objectives and operating principles.
The book also highlight a practical model and framework for aligning and facilitating change. The CAM or Corporate Alignment Model provides a detailed yet easy-to-understand framework for business leaders and change agents. Together with the 9R Model, aligning, it is an awesome tool for any organization to align or change its culture.
I have read many books about organizational culture, this is of the most awesome truth about it. I will be recommending Awesome Purpose to my CEO and anyone definitely. Thank you, Nigel MacLennan, for this awesome book.

Book Description
Energy, chemistry, solvents, and habitats - the basic elements of living systems - define the opportunities and limitations for life on other worlds. This study examines each of these parameters in crucial depth and makes the argument that life forms we would recognize may be more common in our solar system than many assume. It also considers, however, exotic forms of life that would not have to rely on carbon as the basic chemical element, solar energy as the main energy source, or water as the primary solvent. Finally the question of detecting bio- and geosignature of such life forms is discussed, ranging from earth environments to deep space. While speculative considerations in this emerging field of science cannot be avoided, the authors have tried to present their study with the breadth and seriousness that a scientific approach to this issue requires. They seek an operational definition of life and investigate the realm of possibilities that nature offers to realize this very special state of matter and avoid scientific jargon wherever possible to make this intrinsically interdisciplinary subject understandable to a broad range of readers.

Useful insights on the potential for life elsewhere.......2004-10-15
This is not a comprehensive astrobiology text. Instead, it pursues a few key topics to a depth rarely found in other works. These include the definition of life, lessons from the history of life on Earth, possible sources for life, the importance of carbon as opposed to silicon, alternatives to water as a solvent, and signatures of life. It's well worth reading for anyone who is interested in the topic.

Incredible in detail, a must have........1999-10-02
When I first sat down with this book, I could not stop looking at the incredible detail of the photos. I am a farrier and needed detailed images of the workings of the legs. This is way more than I could have hoped for. Layer by layer the horse is dissected with each vein, tendon, ligament and muscle painstakingly pointed out, the photographs are perfect with excellent color, and hand drawn diagrams accompany each image with each item labeled in latin. This book is absolutely invaluable.

Customer Reviews:
for american coaches only.......2005-02-06
I couldn't find much help from this book. However, I'm Swedish and how to start a program here is really different from in the USA. The stunting section was very short. The illustrations to the dancemovements were adequate but sometimes not enough descriptive. There are other books out that will tell you the same things, and more. I recommend "the ultimate guide to cheerleading" by leslie something.
Great for a first-time coach, but.......2004-12-31
A must-have for all coaches. There are a fair variety of motions and jumps depicted, but they are drawings rather than photographs. Also, there is no visual depiction of how to prep for a jump, and this book starts you off with a thigh stand instead of stag stunts but there are stunt variations here not shown in "The Offical Cheerleaders Handbook" or "The Ultimate Guide to Cheerleading" and the photographs lead you pretty much through the whole sequence.
Also in its favor it does have great tips on:
*forming a team
*keeping on top of your legal responsibilities
*developing a practice plan
*reaching out to parents and the community
*building up your members' self-esteem
*evaluating and tweaking your program
My advice is to buy this book in conjunction with the other two mentioned above to get the most knowledge of cheerleading basics.

Coaching Cheerleading Successfully.......2002-12-18
I recommend this book to anyone interested in coaching or advising cheer. One of the best purchases I have ever made, and I bought one for my entire coaching staff. I also run a training website and discussion group and constantly urge my visitors and participants to buy this great resource for coaches of today. A true cheerleading must-have!
This is perfect for beginners as well as long time coaches!.......2001-08-07
I enjoyed this book! I use it with every turn in cheerleading coaching. I have been coaching for the last 11 years and this is one of the best resources that I have come across. I use this for both my All Star Team as well as my Varsity High School Team. This is perfect for the coach or advisor, however I would not suggest this book be viewed by the cheerleaders. This would confused them more than what they are already when any season starts. Coaches get your hands on this one!
An AWESOME book for new coaches.......2000-05-19
A very informative book for new coaches or as a refresher for more established coaches. Covers alot of organizational information regarding cheerleading practices, try-outs and how-to's for starting a new program. I also used this book to inform parents and school board officials on establishing a school program. No coach should be without this book!

Customer Reviews:
Kids love this book!.......2006-09-14
Having lost all of my classroom materials in Hurricane Katrina, I was hunting for things to furnish my room at my new school. I don't remember where I heard about this book, but I purchased it from Amazon and it was the best money I have spent in a long time. I teach in an all-boys school - boys love weird stuff! That book is in someone's hands all the time. I may have to buy another copy soon - this one is getting worn out. Adults will not find it overly interesting, but I bought it for the kids and they definitely do.
GREAT BOOK.......2006-09-05
Good book if you are a fan of the unbelievable and Robert R. Ripley. This is great, long cofee table book on almost EVERY SINGLE subject you can think about! There are over 1,400 unbelievable facts in this book, more than you can think about!
This book is over 300 pages long in its first print (over 200 in second print) and worth every single penny!
Urban legends find a home.......2006-06-19
Typical of a Ripley's Beleive It Or Not book, there are no
refrences. It is a collection of cute trivia from the older
Ripley's Believe It Or Not books. Problem is, most of what
can be checked, is wrong. Frank Wells was never on the Titanic
nor the other ship disasters claimed. The section on laws
includes myths and jokes that someone believed. Stories from
older Ripley books are re-told with different names. It even
says "Mushrooms are a fruit." (They are actually fungi.)
Entertaining, if sparse on details.......2006-01-20
An excellent occasional read, with something to surprise you on every page. One issue I had with this book was the lack of sources for some of the facts. I hope future editions of Ripley's books include or allow access to an online source-book for those interested in digging deeper.
Oddities and eccentricities delight.......2005-12-25
Aaaah I love a good book showcasing the bizarre. This is an incredible book that includes interesting facts and photographs to boot, of amazing individuls, creatures, plants, and events. There is over 5,000 random selections of the most curious things. Some examples include a cow with 8 legs, a man with palm fronds in his skull, a cat born with fur that spells out cat, a dog that wears dentures, man who can flip up the stairs, a man who made an eccentric garden out of curving and knotting tree boughs, an eggplant whose seeds that spelled out God, the man who is turning himself into a lizard, men who can pick up cars, and women who can skate on their toes. Its like a Guiness Book of Records but these facts would not be exactly world famous but just unusual. I love this book and my friend bought this for her 11 year old who has read every page. Its filled with pictures and facts so its a huge collection. It would be great for a coffee table or anyone who embraces eccentricities or has a healthy curiosity.

Discover Art in the Oriental Brush.......1999-09-11
Mr Kwo's book was my introduction into the use of the oriental brush and water based black ink. His book, read over time, brought me into my great appreciation for the skill of the brush. In this work the author describes the use of the brush from a historic point of view. He also shows how brush technique and written language developed and explains to his western readers how to "see with oriental style", with the use of the brush and ink as a tool, the oriental concept of space and lines. Though an artist using a simple brush and water-based ink creates a far different scene than considered typical by western standards, the oriental use of empty space, reserved for the viewers imagination to complete the scene, is very refreshing. It sparked my interest into this subject and from there I went to japanese sumi-e. Thank you for your excellent book Mr. Kwo!
