The guide contains 99 entertaining "action plans" to teach girls how to become financially empowered. They will learn to find deals in the marketplace, use business vocabulary intelligently, start a small home business more profitable (and fun) than baby-sitting and develop the habit of saving for the future. Accompanying each activity are provocative statistics about women and money, as well as stories of girls and women who have succeeded in their own business ventures. Also included is a resource section that provides suggestions for further reading, a directory of organizations and a glossary of business terms.
"At last! A book of practical, simple and enjoyable activities that will give the girls and young women in your life the opportunity to learn that business is both fun and profitable." -- Alice Ball, President, Girls Incorporated

Book Description
As the size and complexity of a company change in the course of its evolution it experiences predictable stages of growth. During these stages, a company discovers that what worked in the past no longer works. At such times, managers have to juggle the three variables of organizational evolution--the firm's purpose, its business and management processes, and its human resource issues--and keep them in balance as they reinvent new ways of structuring the firm. Typically, tension develops as one variable is stressed at the expense of the others. Managers need to know how to delegate decision making without abdicating overall control of the organization. The model developed here derives from the authors' understanding of how successful firms have managed these tensions. Fletcher and Taplin deal with teamwork, leadership, and the nature of dynamic change while successfully avoiding the cliches to which many experts in those areas are prone. They discuss teamwork in the context of wider performance and process issues. They address leadership not by talking about personality traits but by examining the tensions within authority structures as senior managers attempt to reconcile organizational logics (history and past practices that have sustained the firm) and their own definition of the challenges that face the firm. The authors argue that such contradictions follow a predictable pattern. Managers can either ignore the underlying instability or confront it in ways that will ease the transition and sustain the organization's dynamic growth.

Understanding Organizational Evolution is a unique combination of practical management advice and deep insight into the underlying reasons for organizational problems. Fletcher and Taplin provide concrete lessons and symptoms of the need for organizational change from their evolutionary model of organizations that help managers understand exactly what particular problems mean and how to address them. What is more, their inclusion of a history of teamwork's success and failures sheds insight and explanation that is all too rare in practical management books. Their use of numerous specific cases and examples, and emphasis on using information technology for performance management make this book ideal for MBA and Executive Education courses in management and leadership.

Understanding Organizational Evolution has a winning combination of serious academic approach and readability that is necessary for the practical application of innovative techniques. More than a 'how to' manual, this book also explains 'why' and wraps it all neatly together with a written style that is both informative and engaging. The best account I have read so far of performance management, this book will appeal to reflective practitioners everywhere, whether they be managers, consultants or scholars.

Book Description
Utilizing high speed computational methods to extrapolate to the rest of the protein universe, the knowledge accumulated on a subset of examples, protein bioinformatics seeks to accomplish what was impossible before its invention, namely the assignment of functions or functional hypotheses for all known proteins. The Ten Most Wanted Solutions in Protein Bioinformatics considers the ten most significant problems occupying those looking to identify the biological properties and functional roles of proteins. - Problem One considers the challenge involved with detecting the existence of an evolutionary relationship between proteins. - Two and Three studies the detection of local similarities between protein sequences and analysis in order to determine functional assignment. - Four, Five, and Six look at how the knowledge of the three-dimensional structures of proteins can be experimentally determined or inferred, and then exploited to understand the role of a protein. - Seven and Eight explore how proteins interact with each other and with ligands, both physically and logically. - Nine moves us out of the realm of observation to discuss the possibility of designing completely new proteins tailored to specific tasks. - And lastly, Problem Ten considers ways to modify the functional properties of proteins. After summarizing each problem, the author looks at and evaluates the current approaches being utilized, before going on to consider some potential approaches. introbul>Features
Customer Reviews:
Useful, but the title doesn't really describe it.......2007-02-21
The title of this book is misleading; at least, it misled me. Before opening it I thought it would deal with ten unsolved problems in protein bioinformatics that we should like to be able to solve but at present cannot. In other words, I expected that it would be a book for researchers that would challenge them to find solutions to major problems where none are currently available. I was, however, surprised that there should be as many as ten of these. In fact, this is not really a book for researchers, but one for students and others new to protein bioinformatics: these are the things we will want to know when we approach a protein with a bioinformatic approach, these are the sort of methods currently in use, this is the sort of information we can get from them, and these are the respects in which we may hope they will be improved in the future. In short, we are not dealing with questions that at present have no answers, but with ones that we may hope to be able to answer better. In this respect, however, protein bioinformatics is just like any other discipline: few, if any of the methods we use in science are so good that we cannot conceive of anything better.
As an example, Problem 1 concerns protein sequence alignment: the account begins with a discussion of protein evolution, leading to the distinction between orthology and paralogy and the ideas of protein families, similarity matrices and gap penalties. The chapter then proceeds to a description, at times quite advanced, of methods in current use for comparing and aligning sequences, including multiple alignments. Only in the last of nearly thirty pages discussing this problem does the author turn her attention to the ways in which the methods in use might be improved, but she provides almost no detail.
The other chapters deal with secondary-structure prediction from sequence information, prediction of biological function, tertiary-structure prediction, and so on, ending with more engineering topics such as the design of artificial proteins and the modification of existing proteins to fulfil novel functions. In all of these the presentation is competent, and the book will be very useful to anyone wanting to learn about protein bioinformatics, in particular about the state of the art today. On the other hand, with none of the problems are we dealing with a "most wanted solution" in the sense of seeking a way ahead when the road appears at present to be completely blocked. Nowhere does the author throw down her gauntlet before her colleagues, saying this is where you have failed, and must provide a solution to this vital problem.
Depends on what you want.......2005-10-02
This book delivers reasonably well on the promise in its title: it does a good job in stating the most computational interesting problems relating to proteins. It assumes the reader knows a little about biochemistry, biology, and computational techniques, but only a little about each. Given that base, it does a fair job in describing problems related to protein structure, function, analysis, and design. It's not an advanced text, in either its computational or biological sides, but not an elementary introduction, either. Someone a bit above novice level will probably get the most out of it.
A few things left me a bit leery about this text, though. Despite its 2005 copyright date, the author (p.53) cites an estimate of human 50,000 genes. I'm not sure where (or when) that number comes from, because most estimates today are closer to 30,000. There was another a minor annoyance in the discussion of convolution as a tool in protein docking. The failure to distinguish convolution from correlation is minor and forgivable. Saying that one "convolutes" a convolution is like say that one "revolutes" a revolution. Revolve: revolution, convolve: convolution. Also, the Fourier transform step in correlation, especially when docking a small molecule to a protein, is an optimization rather than a requirement. Transform-based correlation gives better performance for asymptotically large models. In some computing environments, for models of realistic sizes, the simplicity of direct correlation gives a performance advantage - and allows non-linear scoring algorithms that would be impossible with the transform approach.
This is a fair introduction to many of the ways people study proteins computationally, and to the kinds of tools required. There is very little computaitonal detail, however. It may help a tool-builder create a conceptual base for studying proteins, but won't help much with the specific calculations.

Comprehensive but a little dated.......2005-09-23
This is a very useful overview of the very broad subject of bioinformatics, and it provides a good background on a variety of approaches to topics like protein conformation prediction. The translation is excellent - the subject-matter is clear and there are no obvious errors, which is unusual for such a technical subject. The main drawback of the book is that, because this is a field in which progress is being made rapidly, the book is already out of date in places. For example, in the chapter dealing with protein structure prediction, there is scant mention of the most successful approach to date, namely the Rosetta project initiated at the University of Washington in Seattle.
Nevertheless, this is a very useful primer for people coming into the area of bioinformatics and it covers topics that will not age as rapidly, such as certain statistical models. Indeed, the author's exposition of how Hidden Markov Models work is as clear as anything I've read anywhere.

Read by the author
"In their innocence and wisdom, in their connection to the earth and its most ancient rhythms, animals show us a way back to a home they have never left."
So says
Susan Chernak McElroy, a cancer survivor who credits much of her triumph over terminal illness to the love of the animals in her life. From the courage of her dog, Keesha, who taught McElroy how to face challenges with grace and acceptance, to the uncanny victory over leukemia she witnessed in a foundling kitten, McElroy offers a unique and compelling chronicle of her healing journey. In
Animals as Teachers and Healers, McElroy shares her story along with other true testaments from many other souls who have been touched, for a moment or for a lifetime, by the loving energies of animals.
Customer Reviews:
not very informative.......2006-09-14
I thought this book would have information and some facts about how animals help humans, but it doesn't. It is just about her life. Only buy if you are interested in learning about this woman's life.
Beautiful........2005-11-11
This a truly special book. Beautifully written. I highly recommend it to anyone that has ever had a special bond with an animal, or wishes to try to understand the beneficial presence of animals in our lives.
An Uplifting Tribute to our Animal Friends.......2005-03-14
Anyone who knows me knows that I am a sucker for a good animal story. If it's happy, I cry; if it's sad, I cry harder. Animal abuse distresses me almost more than anything else.
One of my pleasures is to pick up every book I can on animals and the psychic realm. The books that focus on our intimate connections to the animal kingdom and how we may communicate with them through our intuitive thoughts and feelings are books to not only to learn from, but to savor.
I remember that pioneer in the field, Beatrice Lydecker, whose book was revolutionary when it came out years ago. It was "What the Animals Tell Me", and I was thrilled this work was available to us. The fact that there are so many books about this subject on the market now testifies to the fact that as a people we are really ready to hear the wisdom and love that animals offer. They are not just a food source or slave labor to us any longer.
Ms. McElroy does a beautiful job of bringing forth her message of healing the relationship between people and animals. She comes from a most compassionate, wise place in her understanding of why animals are with us as our companions.
If you want an example of unconditional love, be in the presence of a beloved pet. Never have I, in my life, ever received even close to that level of unconditional love and acceptance that my animal companions have shown me. [Particularly my recently deceased, Francis, who was a very evolved being inhabiting a humble life form. I am planning a future book on this soul.]
Animals are helping us evolve to the realization of our Oneness universe. We are taught by them that there is no separation between us and them. They feel what we feel. They see the spiral of life and death as part of the Wholeness of life.
The author goes into several different topics: animals as guides or guardians, healers, in the dream state or shamanic state, and through the death process. There is no dead weight in this book---all is riveting, and should be read more than once through.
Most highly recommended.
Animals as Teachers and Healers.......2005-02-18
This is the Best book that I have read and I have read quite a few books. I purchased this book in a train station in Washington, DC because I had a long time between trains returning to Pittsburgh from North Carolina. After I started reading this book, I could not stop. I read most of it in the train station and finished it when I arrived home. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the various stories about the animals. When I read some stories, I cried because of what happened to the animals. In some of the stories, animals risked their own lives to save a human life. I love animals very much and for anyone who loves animals, this is the book to read. The author, Susan Chernak McElroy is an exceptional writer and I would purchase any book she writes.
A beautiful tribute to animals.......2004-01-18
Susan McElroy has put together a most memorable book. It expresses the beautiful relationships and experiences people have had with animals in a way that deeply touches the heart. I could not read this book with a dry eye. Having grown up with many animals, I have long been an animal lover. Reading about the moving experiences that others have had with animals confirmed the feeling that I have often had that we are connected with them on a deeper than conscious level. This book accords animals the honor they deserve.

WWE 1963 - TBA.......2006-04-21
Scott Keith isnt everyones ideal voice of wrestling .
Many can rightly point to his onesided and often jaded view of the business and claim he'd alway look at the pro wrestling glass as being forever half empty .
But personally i like his no frills approch to the subject , even if he does tend to droan on a bit after having made his point .
WWF/E wasnt painted in a very good light by Keith and no surprise there , just got to read the title to figure this.
Could of done without all his star ratings , but reading his net columns over years it was exspected .
Still good to read if read The Death Of WCW
Unbelievably horrible.......2005-03-06
This is one of the worst books i've had the displeasure of reading through......Scott Keith is a bitter guy with an extremely negative outlook on everything....his book reflects that and so does all his work regarding professional wrestling...i could only get halfway through this pile of crap before i just had to give it back to my friend...funny part was that he didn't want it back....at least I finally have leverage for my off-balanced table leg....i just had to take the book cover off because I don't want to be reminded of it....it amazes me how someone can be so negative towards a business that has given him so much pleasure over the years.....his writing style is also horrible...just awful....it just has such a condescending manner to it....it's almost like it's unintentionally putting down the reader as well......lame lame book....avoid this if you can....
An honest look at the ups and downs of one wrestling company.......2005-02-08
I am already a fan of Scott Keith's weekly columns on the Inside Pulse website, and I consider him to be one of the most honest and insightful wrestling writers out there. This book is an in-depth look at a year or so of recent WWF/WWE history. Keith is certainly biased and opinionated, but that is what makes his books and his columns so fun to read. Even if you don't agree with him, Keith can make you laugh and make you think about North American corporate wrestling in new ways. If you are at all interested in Vince McMahon's wrestling shows, then this book should be near the top of your reading list.
A solid overview of the WWE's downward spiral.......2005-01-30
Wrestling's One Ring Circus is a solid overview of the WWE's fall from grace to 2001 to 2003. Prior to this, the WWE was a crossover phenomenon creating mainstream stars such as "Stone Cold" Steve Austin and The Rock. However, their descent was brutal and swift and Scott Keith does a great job of profiling their downfall. In actuality, you don't realize the magnitude of the company's failures until you read this book as Keith touches on everything, whether it's career ending injuries, the company's failure to push their most talented performers, or failed storylines. Like his previous book Tonight...In This Very Ring, Keith inserts his internet rants detailing important matches from the era throughout the text. The rants are still very good although they could be long winded, hence the term "rants." To his credit, he has revised his match ratings upon further review. As a long time wrestling fan and reporter, Keith displays his unbiased opinions about the failure of the WWE product and while many of his views come across as bitter, most of the time he has a valid point (ex....not giving a bigger push to popular performers Booker T and Rob Van Dam, the continued push of bigger and less talented athletes). In particular, Scott does a great job of the WWE's biggest failures such as the WCW Invasion angle, the gay wedding between Billy and Chuck, and the formerly wildly popular NWO. He also gives credit where it's due to the great performers from this era such as Kurt Angle, Chris Benoit, and Brock Lesnar. However, he knocks Triple H and Shawn Michaels frequently throughout the book, to the point where it makes you wonder if it's more of a personal vendetta, particularly with Michaels since he was in on the Montreal screw job which took the World title off of Bret "Hitman" Hart, who like Keith is Canadian. Nevertheless, this is a very good read and a thorough review of the WWE's decline.
Not bad at all.......2005-01-20
I thougtht the book was pretty good. I actually read it at a Barnes and Noble, as I had gone there for the Death of WCW but it wasn't in. I didn't read the match reviews, as I had read the originals in his rants, and skipped a few minor parts. I thought it was a detailed look at a bad period for the WWE. Though things have picked up (at least on the Raw side), the company is still making the same mistakes, such as keeping the belt on Triple H. How they could screw up having Goldberg and the invasion is beyond me. Even if you've read all his rants, you can still learn a few backstage things.

Book Description
There's never been anything like this before: the very first anatomically exact, and complete, three-dimensional, computer-generated reconstruction of actual human anatomy. These amazing color images come to life thanks to the National Library of Medicine's Visible Human Project™. For every structure, the database generates a incredibly detailed "wire frame" image, which then underwent contour mapping for a more realistic picture. First, the systemic anatomy appears: the skeletal, muscular, nervous, endocrine, circulatory, respiratory, digestive, urinary, and reproductive systems. Then, the focus is on the regional anatomy, including the head and neck (with brain, eye, and ear); thorax (with lungs and heart); abdomen (stomach, liver, gallbladder, spleen, intestines, kidney); pelvis; upper limb (arm, elbow, forearm, hand); and lower limb (thigh, knee, legs, and foot). It's the most fascinating mirror on our own construction ever produced , and will enthrall students, doctors, scientists, and anyone interested in the miracle that is the human body.
Customer Reviews:
The New Atlas by Mc Cracken.......2004-07-19
The presentation shows a 3-dimensional and anatomically correct
version of the human body depicted in full-color. All of the
major body systems are depicted for view by a wide constituency
of medical students, biology students, students of anatomy
and a broad general readship. Each body system has a locator
for ease of navigation through the text. Illustrations are
annotated methodically in full color. The musculature is set
forth in high definition for ease of identification.
The work is worth the price paid. Every scientific and
medical library should have one. This presentation would be
perfect for any class project in science.
For the layman.......2003-08-23
This book is a beautiful book. I love the pictures. It is NOT for an A&P class though. You would need a book like Martini, Marieb, Tortora, Van de Graaff for that. But, the pictures are beautiful and on nice paper. The information that is presented is accurate. It is just not detailed. If you expect a very technical book, this is NOT the book for you. If you just want an easy read and overview of the body, this book is for you.
New and exciting.......2003-08-02
This book is really very interesting. It isn't like the regular A&P text books. It describes some anatomy but it wouldn't get you through an anatomy class at all. The pictures are beautiful and the book is huge with wonderful descriptions. It is very easy to understand, even for a lay person. I enjoyed the book very much. Disregard the other bad reviews. I can't believe someone would make a huge deal about a circumsized cadaver! (which is how they reproduced their photos!!)
Simply wonderful........2003-02-14
This book is an excellent reference tool for the layman who wants to know more about human anatomy. The illustrations are unsurpassed. I was astonished to see that it had such a low average customer rating, until I read the negative reviews. One is apparently from a "serious student of anatomy." I will confess ignorance as to whether it would suffice as a textbook for professional anatomy training; I just know that it greatly enhanced my lay understanding of how the human body is structured and how it works. The other negative reviews are from anti-circumcision activists who are apparently outraged that the depiction of the male penis in the book is that of a circumcised rather than an uncircumcised organ. Enough said.
A Serious Anatomical Inaccuracy.......2003-01-16
This book fails to show an essential piece of mammalian anatomy - the foreskin. This is an affront to all normal humans who have not been surgically deprived of half of the skin on their normal penis. Since not a single solitary national medical organization in the entire world approves of routine infant circumcision, it is hardly appropriate for an anatomy book to omit it. This is a striking example of how far the circumcizers will go to promote this human rights violation.
