...

Put together 18 academic and corporate leaders and ask them to share their thinking and strategies related to organizational effectiveness and, you guessed it''ýý.a wonderful collection of thought provoking insights.

This book is a collection of essays, interviews and study results on effective organizational leadership and strategies. While the book focuses on the for-profit sector, many of the themes are relevant to not-for-profit organizations.

My own background has been both in not for profit and for profit corporations. My reaction to the first few chapters of the book was luke warm. I thought the presentations were too academic and were applicable primarily to very large for profit corporations. Most not for profits do not have the resources, human or financial, to implement many of the worthwhile observations made in those early chapters. However, as I got further into the book, I found myself taking notes and voila'.. I actually was inspired by two of the chapters.

While a listing of the subjects covered (see below) may get a yawn or two, there are some real gems hidden within this book. I was especially pleased to learn more about outcomes management and new business models. Those chapters gave me some concrete ideas, which I was able to use right away, given the nature of my work with non-profits. Other readers will likely find different gems of particular interest to them. That is the beauty of this book. It stimulates creative thinking and new ideas.

The chapters deal with organizational self assessment, responding to changing business conditions, the marketing of leadership, entrepreneurial efficiencies, alternative business structures, strategic generosity, and leadership in the virtual world, to name a few. There is even an interview with Scott Adams, the creator of the Dilbert comic strip, which often deals with subjects related to the workplace.

This is an ýideasý book and not a ýhow toý publication. If you are ready to explore a variety of ideas from business leaders and academics, pick up a copy. Who knows, you may also walk away with a few good new ideas, which can be part of your own leadership arsenal.

5 out of 5 stars Don't you want your organization to perform?.......2002-04-03

I am a fan of the Drucker Foundation's LEADER TO LEADER journal. This collection of articles is just right for people looking to make their organization (or department, or team) perform.

My favorites include chapters by Frances Hesselbein, Philip Kotler, the interview of Scott Adams, and the partnership chapter by James E. Austin. I also loved the work of Douglas K. Smith, Leonard L. Berry, and Adrian Slywotzky.

1 out of 5 stars Horribly self-serving and simplistic.......2001-05-23

This book offers very little help in leading successful change. The book's content really exists in one chapter that describes Mercer's three ingredients to successful change. These ingredients are very basic and intuitive concepts that are covered in a very cursory way. And all throughout the description of his three ingredients, Mercer is plugging his other books and seminars. It gets extremely annoying and detracts from the validity of what Mercer has to say.

The one positive for this book is that there are several interesting case studies for change. However, they are riddled once again with Mercer's plugs. Here's just one example from the middle of a case study:

"Employees pick up cues about the leader's optimism, attitudes, expressions, and way of handling situations. In fact, this is addressed in two of my books and audio books: (1) Spontaneous Optimism; Proven Strategies for Health, Prosperity & Happiness and also (2) How Winners Do It: High Impact People Skills for Your Career Success. My books and related business tools and speeches even delve into research and practical tips on how optimists tend to achieve much more career success than pessimists."

Aside from being self-serving, if these tools and practical tips do exist, why are they not included in the book?

I would strongly recommend not purchasing this book. There are much better books on change that you can spend your time and money on.

        Book Description

During the past century approximately fifty percent of the world’s wetlands have been destroyed, largely due to human activities. Increased human population has lead to shrinkage of wetland areas, and data show that as they shrink, their important functions decline. Reduced wetland area causes more flooding in Spring, less available water during drought, greater risk of water pollution, and less food production and reduced carbon storage. Much of the remaining pristine wetland systems are found in the world’s largest wetlands, and yet these areas have received surprisingly little scientific research or attention. This volume presents the views of leading experts on each of the world’s largest wetland systems. Here, this international team of authors share their understanding of the ecological dynamics of large wetlands and their significance, and emphasise their need of conservation.

            Book Description

The Pantanal of Brazil, Bolivia and Paraguay is an edited volume, which includes 29 scholarly papers from leading authorities on the Pantanal or related topics. The Pantanal of South America is one of the most immense, pristine and biologically rich environments on the planet. Often referred to as the world's largest freshwater wetland system, it extends over 140,000 square kilometers of central-western Brazil, eastern Bolivia and northeastern Paraguay. With its extraordinarily concentrated and diverse flora and fauna, and a landscape spanning a variety of ecological sub-regions, the Pantanal remains one of the world's great natural wonders.

This collection of papers and presentations on the Pantanal represents perhaps the most comprehensive English-language work on this vast, relatively unknown region, in that the entire Pantanal (Brazlian, Bolivian and Paraguayan portions) is examined. This work stems from the first and second World Conference on Preservation and Sustainable Development in the Pantanal, held in 1999. While this work is a conference editon, and is due to be revised, expanded and published by Paragon House in 2001, it nonetheless remains one of the best works in English on the Pantanal. Many of the world's foremost authorities -- from Brazil, Bolivia, Paraguay and other nations, and from key international and intergovernmental organizations -- share their knowledge of the Pantanal and their insights on the socioeconomic challenges confronting this unique treasure.

"Animals are the source of some of our most imaginative and persistent fantasies, and these fantasies are the only way most of us ever get to escape from our urbanized and domesticated lives into a larger world," writes Richard Conniff in the introduction to Every Creeping Thing. But Conniff, author of Spineless Wonders, has some rather strange ideas of the kinds of animals we might want to daydream about. Take the little brown bat ... please: "When their mouths are open and their insect-gnashing teeth exposed, they look like the sort of particularly unpleasant lap dog that a Barbie doll would have in her spiteful and neglected old age."

Conniff lovingly describes the habits of grizzlies, mice, cormorants, weasels, sharks, porcupines, moles, snapping turtles, and other underappreciated critters, including the scientists and fanciers who pay attention to these animals. In deadpan prose, Conniff describes the decorative nature of bloodhound slobber ("It hangs down in ropes from the upper lips, or flews, and sometimes gets festooned between the lip and the end of either ear.") and the distinctive mating call of the porcupine ("It is like a baby whimpering from a dream that is bad and getting worse... "). Every Creeping Thing is a delightful, yet far too short, tour of our love-hate relationship with some "faintly repulsive wildlife." --Therese Littleton

            Book Description

"Despite the efforts of many earnest and life-affirming people to persuade me that the vampire bat is our friend and that Native Americans enjoyed true harmony with Brother Wolf, I have never quite overcome the gut feeling that fear of nature is normal......It can also be pleasurable......What I really find creepy and wonderful about nature are not its great terrors, but its weird, unsuspected minutiae....for instance, that some sharks practice sibling cannibalism in the womb, or that a mole will paralyze earthworms, ball them up in a knot, and seal them away in individual cells in the walls of its chambered mound, still living, to be eaten at leisure. I am captivated by the sight of a keyhole limpet....[which] carries a sort of vicious pet under its shell, like an old lady's lap dog."--From Every Creeping ThingIn this sequel to Spineless Wonders, Richard Conniff once again explores the tangled connections between human beings and animals (this time mostly vertebrates). His adventures take us from an island in the Gulf Stream, where a man devotes his life to the devilbird, to provincial England, where bloodhounds and riders on horseback hunt down a human being for sport. With his characteristically offbeat approach, Conniff focuses on some of the least huggable members of the animal world-- porcupines, snapping turtles, cormorants, bats, mice, moles. Through their lives, Conniff introduces us to some of the strangest behaviors on earth. We meet sharks that practice sibling cannibalism in their mother's womb, bats that delight in a sybaritic "disco mating strategy," and five-hundred-pound grizzly bears that gorge themselves on moths in August. Every Creeping Thing is a fascinating, comic tour through the far side of the animal kingdom.

5 out of 5 stars More Beach Reading for Geeks.......2003-07-05

Coniff is an easy writer to read and picks engaging subject matter: sloths, bats, sharks, mice, to name a few. This isn't as grim as spineless wonders -- although much of the wildlife contained herein is faintly repulsive -- but it is as interesting. For anyone who can't stomach the latest summer trash novel to read at the beach but can't be bogged down by erudite writers this is perfect.

            5 out of 5 stars Great Read.......2000-08-01

Conniff clearly has an affinity for the animal knigdom. This elegantly-written, witty---heck, it's laugh-out-loud funny at times---offbeat book is a must-read for anyone interested in animals, humans and their complicated pas-de-deux.

Conniff's prose clips along and he even gives the reader a few eccentric characters, some violence and a bit of weird sex to carry the whole thing forward. The violence is non-gratuitous---who can blame the shark for an occasional chomp on a surfers leg? The characters who seem (indeed, are) eccentric are the people who help us better understand the nature of the snapping turtle, for example, or the cormorant. And then there's the bat sex (a "disco mating strategy"), sloth sex (really, really slow) and porcupine which ends, a biologist tells Conniff, in "hostile screaming." "The wonder is that it ever began at all," Conniff notes.

This is a terrific read that sent me, happily, to Conniff's other book, Spinelss Wonders. I gave both to my high school age son who's interested in a career in the natural sciences and he loved them. Also, the illustrations by Sally J. Bensusen are wonderful.

3 out of 5 stars Misleading title, but fairly interesting anyway.......1999-10-24

Based on this book's title and short description, I was expecting "tales" of interesting or unusual animal behaviors or characteristics. Unfortunately, many of the chapters seemed to focus more on the people who study or hunt these animals than on the animals themselves. While many of the chapters were fairly interesting, little unique or fascinating information about the animals was presented. Finally, it was hard to consider some of the animals or their behaviors to be even faintly repulsive (e.g., a bull being used to film a TV commercial).

5 out of 5 stars A delight for both the layperson and experts........1999-02-28

Richard Conniff has done it again! "Spineless Wonders" was fascinating and informative and I am happy to report that his book "Every Creeping Thing" follows in those same footsteps. From the Introduction where he speaks of our ignorance about the natural world to the epilogue where Mr. Coniff admits that perhaps he has been searching for some "larger, mythic connection" with the natural world the reader will find a whole new world opened up to them. A world so new that it could help strengthen our desire to preserve the very planet we live on.

In this book you will meet Bonifacio de Leon or "Boney" as he is known who studies the sloths of Panama, an animal that is slow but not stupid. Spend some time with David Wingate who is attempting to piece together a tropical paradise known as Nonsuch Island turned into a desert after humans discovered it, all for one bird known as the Cahow. Grizzlies, sharks, porcupines, weasles, even animal actors, this diverse volume is easy to read and understand by people who know absolutely nothing about the natural world, but a complete delight for those of us who work with and around animals. A veritable encyclopedia of information that will enlighten and enhance the lives of those who read it.

Where else can you find out that the Bloodhound is not named for its fondness for blood but rather that it is a reference to the fact that it is one of the first purebreds, the first canine blue blood. That snapping turtles "right now are in the biggest population explosion of their history", yet it is still hard to find them. Most of us are aware that bats use echolocation to find their prey but "according to one theory, tiger moths actually produce a high-pitched sound to jam the bat's sonar", still the bat seems to have the advantage.

I have worked with and educated people about animals for almost 20 years now and both "Every Creeping Thing" and "Spineless Wonders" by Mr. Conniff are now invaluable reference resources and highly prized additions to my own library. Please take some time to read one or both of these books, it will change your whole perception about the planet we live on and why it is important to save "Every Creeping Thing".

Heftier than most trophy trout, Ken Schultz's thoroughly comprehensive reference may be too big to fit into your fly box, but it'll take you more places than a marlin fighting a hook. Schultz knows what he's talking about; a staffer at Field & Stream for more than 25 years, he's held seven world fishing records at one time or another and was recently inducted into the Fishing Hall of Fame. Somewhere along the way, he put down his rod long enough to reel in more than 100 expert contributors from around the world to help compile what should be the definitive reference on all things angling for some time.

More than 2,200 entries cover the whole ocean--plus rivers, streams, lakes, and ponds--of sportfishing with topics ranging from technique and equipment to the fish themselves. You want the ABCs of sonar? It's here. Unsure what a Kirby hook looks like? Schultz'll show you. How do you drift fish? This is where to learn. Hundreds of species are present and accounted for, their entries accompanied by photographs and/or watercolors. Say, for example, you want to land an Atlantic Bonito. The Fishing Encyclopedia will tell you the fish's Latin name is Sarda sarda, it's a relative of tuna, and it has a reputation for putting up a fight and tasting good once you catch it. Schultz also adds detailed information on its markings, size, habitat, behavior, and feeding habits and even offers some counsel on how best to catch it. The Fishing Encyclopedia may not be able to physically catch something for you, but it'll tell you pretty much everything you want to know about anything--other than maybe that old shoe--you manage to land on your own. --Jeff Silverman

5 out of 5 stars Everything You Want To Know. And Much Much More.......2002-07-24

I found this book extremely useful and entertaining. It doesn't speak down to you or use terms that I wouldn't use. It's not a cheap book, but once you purchase it you find that you got what you paid for! Great for people just getting started as well as the hardcore fisherman.Buy this book for yourself or as a present and you will be glad you did.
Oh yeah,I like the authors name too! ( no relation, really,I swear! )

The book 'Fishing Encyclopedia'by Ken Schultz is the best around. Globally the information can be used to learn many things that Anglers ought to know. This is the best book I have ever read. Must read for anyone interested in fishing

4 out of 5 stars Sea bream or river bream.......2001-03-11

It's a great encyclopedia, very good, but about photos or pics that identified the fish is 2 stars, it is correct because that is not a fish encyclopedia but a fishing encyclopedia, and I ask where are the photos of rods, reels, lines, baits etc., they are there but very few, in suma to much to read. e.g. The cantonense name "HAK LAP" (page 245 - The river bream (Acanthopagrus berda) is a prominent...) is only one of a kind that we have here, and translated to english means BLACK BREAM, and it is a black bream but fished at the river, but this is only the common name, so I don't know the correct name of HAK LAP is ACANTHOPAGRUS BERBA (river bream)or ACANTHOPAGRUS BUTCHERI (black bream). Anyway they are a big family, like HAK LAP(balck bream), WONG KEOK LAP (Yellowfin bream), PAK LAP (silver bream), KAM SI LAP, KAI KONG LAP, HAK SA LAP,(the last 3 are only from this region) this are the most common fish (breams) that I saw around here. So this book is not enough for me. About the book I thing all people that like to fish must have it, because no one can tell you more than the book, and all the book are your best friend, it will not say NO to you when you like to read it, right!

5 out of 5 stars The Only Fishing Encyclopedia You'll Ever Need.......2000-12-06

This book has everything there is to know about fresh or saltwater fishing. A must gift for the angler in your family. Schultz is the man! He obviously spent a lot of time researching his topic, and in case the excellent prose isn't sufficient, the illustrations make every point that much clearer. A perfect gift for the expert angler, or a young one wanting to learn from the best!

5 out of 5 stars This man knows what he's talking about.......2000-12-06

Ken Schultz knows sportfishing. Anyone who reads this book will agree that he is truly an authority on the subject. His carefully organized listings, from A to Z, complete with beautiful artwork and enticing photographs, shines among all books in the outdoor category. Schultz must have spent years compiling this information, and I cannot imagine how he organized it so well. Whether I'm looking for a fishing destination, for information on equipment, or a description of a species of fish, it's all here. I read that he is the long-time fishing editor of Field & Stream, a magazine known for its great prose, and it is obvious that he is best in his class among fishing journalists.

Great Book! with CD even better. Will help with our missions trips to Germany. Basic level, but a lot of information to help learn German.

4 out of 5 stars Das ist gut!.......2006-07-13

I have really enjoyed working through this book. It does focus a lot on the vocab you'll need if you are travelling to Germany. If you are looking for basic grammar, this tries to explain it, but may not be what you are looking for. The CDs help a lot, but you really need the book in front of you if you are listening to them, because they don't give the translation on the CDs. This forces you to follow along through the book. The phonetic spellings in the book are also very good to help improve your accent.

                3 out of 5 stars Review.......2006-03-15

I am a native German speaker who used this for a continuing education course at the local community college. I chose it because it did seem at first to be perfect. However, some things I found were:
The author seems to have rather many Austrian expressions as opposed to standard German. Other than Austrian expressions, there are words I never heard of and would not use in modern German conversation. I noted also that past and future tenses were not addressed. I will not use it for beginners again.

3 out of 5 stars NOT for beginners..........2006-01-14

Do NOT buy this book if you are a beginner in German. It starts somewhere in level two or three and goes on from there. The basics are never really explained. It's more of a complete immersion, than a learn from scratch method.

2 out of 5 stars Only Useful as a Supplement.......2005-11-02

I bought this book at a sale without any of the audio CDs, so I am only commenting on the book.

This book is structured around visiting Germany, starting with arrival at the airport, followed by travel, dining, shopping and finishing with departure from the country. Unfortunately, the motivating dialogue at the start of every chapter is unrelated to many of the words introduced in the rest of the chapter. For example, the first chapter has a conversation between an airport clerk and a visitor about lost luggage, then introduces words for family members and furniture but ends without discussing numbers, the casual and polite forms of "you" or even the noun "luggage" in the dialogue.

The book includes is a pull out dictionary in a booklet and pages for flash cards. However, it only has a brief table of contents and does not have an index, so it's pretty hard to find anything later.

Perhaps this book is intended to be used as a workbook with a tutor or with the audio CDs but it doesn't provide any guidance on how it should be used. I didn't find this book useful for self-study and I only use it as a supplement to other German study guides.

                      Book Description

OPULENT REPRODUCTIONS OF ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPTS SPANNING 12 CENTURIES

This oversized and magnificently printed tour de force contains examples from 167 of the most dazzling and significant illuminated manuscripts in existence. Presented in chronological order, each reproduction illustrates a one-of-a-kind painting originally created for the church, for royalty or for the wealthiest private benefactors. Although the focus is on European manuscripts (French, Dutch, German, Italian, English and Spanish), nearly two dozen examples have also been included from Persia, Turkey and India - cultures with their own rich traditions of exquisite miniature painting.

The highly readable text is both factual and informational. Each entry provides the date and place of origin, format, content, name of miniaturist, number of illustrations, owner and provenance for the featured manuscript. Enriching the facts are essays describing the circumstances of the commission, description of the technique, history of the workshop from which it came, and much more.

CODICES ILLUSTRES is an unparalleled reference, but also an irresistible story book, revealing to the reader the significance of imagery used, and sharing fascinating facts about the painters who created these treasures and the patrons who were lucky enough to possess them.

A thirty-six page appendix contains biographies of the artists, an extensive bibliography, an index, and a glossary in which the technical terms used in the book can quickly be found. Flanking the page numbers are charming characters and symbols taken from the manuscripts, providing a witty decorative grace note to what is already an embarrassment of riches. Of special note; a fifth color - gold - was used in the printing of two hundred and twelve pages of CODICES ILLUSTRES. This complicated and costly process is the only way to genuinely reproduce the lavish gilding used in so many medieval manuscripts and the book wouldn't be the same without it.

CODICES ILLUSTRES is an essential addition to the library of anyone with an interest illuminated manuscripts, medieval art, and the history of books before the invention of printing.

Illumination has fascinated me since I was a boy. This is the best book I have seen of illuminations. The scope includes books in Greek, Latin, Old Church Slavonic, Persian, and Mayan. The printing is superb. Detailed descriptions tell who did the work, who patronized it, who owned the book, where it is now, and so forth. Great for browsing for enjoyment and as a source of inspiration. I expect this book to be a favorite for many years to come. Anybody who enjoys calligraphy and illumination would be delighted to own this book.

5 out of 5 stars One of the coolest books I own!!.......2006-07-06

This book is worth every penny! It has fantastic HUGE pictures full of great detail. As an artist who specialises in ancient illuminated manuscripts, I value this book above all others in my personal library. So many great manuscripts are represented here. Truely high art!

5 out of 5 stars A great book on medieval illumination.......2005-11-11

This book deserves a seven stars score, as it is magnificent in every sense: Paper, Colour palette reproduction, basic and reliable information accompanying every depicted facsimil, and specially because of the scope of the compendium, involving manuscript examples from arabic countries as well as a XIII century mexican manuscript (The Borgia Codex currently held at the Biblioteca Vaticana) This collection shows (as rarely done by supossedly comprehensive treatises) that Mesoamerican, Chinese and Arabic cultures do also possess a very rich medieval heritage, characterised by a colourful tradition in art production. I strongly recommend this book for anyone interested in Medieval illumination, as well as for those modern illuminators concerned with applying only authentic medieval colours (mostly inorganic compounds) in their manuscript reproductions and finally, this book serves also as a comprehensive guide for visiting great libraries and museums all around the world where some of these manuscripts are exhibited (Do not forget to visit the Condé Museum and The Marmottan-Monet Museum in France).

4 out of 5 stars A magnificent, unwieldly place to begin.......2002-12-04

For those interested in the sheer beauty of medieval illumination, this book is a wonder. Color repro values among the best I've seen, and the range of both period and style is superb. The huge size and great weight are the only reasons this did not get 5 stars - it is so big that I clamp it in my portable easel when I'm using it as an exemplar.

For those, like me, who also do illumination as a hobby this book offers a good range of exemplars of very high caliber. Just remember that this represents the best of many times and places, and don't be intimidated by the quality of the work displayed here. Codices Illustres is big enough to be a coffee table book, but is serves much better as a reference in the scriptorium.
