      Book Description

      Information technology matters. The formulation of business models and strategies is likely to be seriously flawed if it neglects new technological changes and repercussions. Information technology and organizational learning are both critical to attaining and sustaining competitive advantage. Based on these premises, and on the increasingly evident obsolescence of the traditional, hierarchical business model, the author takes an integrated approach to the discussion of organizational learning, new value propositions, supply-chain optimization, e-commerce, new perspectives on business process reengineering, collaborative business models, globalization of business, and the continuing trend toward virtual integration. This book is not another tired exhortation to take advantage of technology to improve corporate performance. One cannot utilize technology to its full potential without also overhauling the rigid, hierarchical business model that was designed for the command-and-control corporate environment of the industrial era. Tsai takes a comprehensive view of everything that needs to be done in order to make the most of emerging technologies. The new information economy calls for companies that foster strategic collaboration through a more horizontal organizational structure. A more synchronized supply chain yields better customer service, higher quality, faster delivery, and lower inventory. In the customer-centric environment, a new value proposition is essential. Business processes must be fast, focused, flexible, responsive, and nimble. With the knowledge gained from this book, one should be able to face the future with an ability and capacity to discern technology policies and make decisions concerning strategic positioning and competitive business strategy.

        "Handbook of Comparative Genomics is a pioneering composition illuminating the emerging scientific discipline of comparative evolutionary genomics. Professors Cecilia Saccone and Graziano Pesole have not only provided us with a treasure trove of molecular, structural and compositional information, but more importantly, they have produced a scholarly exegesis of empirical, statistical, bioinformatical, computational, and evolutionary methodology. The Handbook contains both introductory and advanced material, and manages to maintain a degree of lucidity that is as rare as it is indispensable in scientific discourse." Book Description

        The enormous complexity of biological systems at the molecular level must be answered with powerful computational methods. Computational biology is a young field, but has seen rapid growth and advancement over the past few decades. Surveying the progress made in this multidisciplinary field, the Handbook of Computational Molecular Biology offers comprehensive, systematic coverage of the various techniques and methodologies currently available. Accomplished researcher Srinivas Aluru leads a team of experts from around the world to produce this groundbreaking, authoritative reference. With discussions ranging from fundamental concepts to practical applications, this book details the algorithms necessary to solve novel problems and manage the massive amounts of data housed in biological databases throughout the world. Divided into eight sections for convenient searching, the handbook covers methods and algorithms for sequence alignment, string data structures, sequence assembly and clustering, genome-scale computational methods in comparative genomics, evolutionary and phylogenetic trees, microarrays and gene expression analysis, computational methods in structural biology, and bioinformatics databases and data mining. The Handbook of Computational Molecular Biology is the first resource to integrate coverage of the broad spectrum of topics in computational biology and bioinformatics. It supplies a quick-reference guide for easy implementation and provides a strong foundation for future discoveries in the field.

        5 out of 5 stars Written by Leading Researchers.......2006-04-05

        Computational is a new and rapidly changing field as new research and techniques are being developed on an almost daily basis. It is to the credit of the author and publisher that they have been able to put together such a complete and well organized handbook this early.

        Clearly this field is not ready for a standard text to have been developed, indeed it is clearly too much for even one writer. Instead, the editor calls this 'truly a community effort, with the chapters authored by leading researchers widely recognized for their research contributions and expertise.'

        In all there are 38 specific chapters organized into eight major parts. The parts are: Sequence Alignments, String Data Strctures, Genome Assembly and EST Clustering, Genome-Scale Computational Methods, Microarrays and Gene Expression Analysis, Computatinal Structural biology, Bioinformatic Databases and Data Mining. The authors represent a who's who of the major American research establishments as well as from Germany, Italy, Russia, Canada, Japan, Isreal, and India.

        The book could be used as a text but is probably more useful to the researcher looking for either an introduction to the field in general or go learn about areas outside his particular area of expertise.

        5 out of 5 stars The encyclopedia.......2006-01-22

        Bioinformatics is too big a field to cover in one book, but this thousand-pager comes close. Its 38 chapters give good summaries of just about every major topic in bioinformatics. Since the table of contents isn't visible here (as of this writing), I'll list the major headings into which the chapters are divided:
        * Sequence alignments
        * String data structures
        * Genome assmebly and EST clustering
        * Genome-scale computational methods
        * Phylogenetics
        * Microarrays and expression analysis
        * Computational structural biology
        * Bioinformatic databases and data mining

        A few things are missing, such as RNA structure prediction and mass spec analysis of proteins. Regulatory networks get only brief mention, perhaps because the topic is still too researchy for any body of accepted practice. These are quibbles, though. The book does a very good job of providing brief surveys of many topics, with an extensive bibliography at the end of each chapter.

        This doesn't replace other books that examine specific topics in greater depth. Instead, it provides quick surveys of many topics, and lots of pointers for further information. For the subjects it covers, it's a great starting point.

            There is nothing more important in life than sex. No, this is not the assertion of another frustrated male of the species displaying signs of sex mania nor, for that matter, an American political commentator, but a factual statement. Perhaps it would be more apt to say there is nothing more important to life, for--daily sustenance and self-preservation excepted--there is no instinct as strong as the one to reproduce and continue one's line. Battle of the Sexes, which accompanies the BBC TV series of the same name, surveys all the weird and wonderful ways the inhabitants of Earth go about "doing the business," bringing together a remarkable wealth of information for the layman with an interest in natural biology.

            There is a tendency to see our own reproductive efforts as altogether different from those of the "natural world." (Thankfully, they are in many ways: the sex lives of some animals described here are very unappealing, particularly for the male who sadly--and all too often--seems to become redundant once his seed is released.) This is largely due to our attribution of concepts like love and romance to our own actions. However, as John Sparks demonstrates in this highly accessible book, colorfully illuminated with an extensive selection of excellent wildlife photography, there is a common ground in the figurative bedroom of nature; sex is not a romantic or cooperative affair, but is selfish, aggressive, and competitive. So we humans are not the only ones, it seems, for whom sex, and the overwhelming desire to seek it out, can lead to a great deal of trouble and strife, bizarre rituals, and absurd behaviors that don't seem to tally with our best interests--think of the poor old male praying mantis or marsupial mouse, for whom the sexual act is likely to be his last in this world. All in all, looking at the amazing diversity of variations around the same basic theme, it does seem that humans got a good deal from Mother Nature--nonfatal (generally), pleasurable, not too messy or painful, etc., though some among us may still envy the barnacle, with a penis 20 times its body length, or the amorous pair of lions from the Serengeti who were seen to mate 157 times in just two and a half days. Wow, indeed! Not even a president could match that. --Alisdair Bowles, Amazon.co.uk

                    TAKE JOY is so good that when I bought a summer home and realized my book was hundreds of miles away, I knew I had to have a second copy. Jane Yolen, author of over 200 books gives me permission to follow my bliss, as Joseph Campbell would say. Her creativity abounds, and her words spar me on my own sideroads, jaunts and tangents. This may be about writing, but it's not just about writing. It's for anyone who aspires to live a life of passion and creativity.

                    Jane Yolen's book, TAKE JOY, was a delightful read. Peppered with charming vignettes, this book on writing has many uses as a "teacher's guide." There are a number of sections that can be adapted to the classroom (most appropriate for secondary school). For creative writing teachers in want of additional ideas, this slim, easy-to-read work would be a good investment.

                    5 out of 5 stars My Alphabetics for "Take Joy"......B for Buy The Book, You'll Be Glad You Did!.......2005-06-26

                    Checked this out from the library, and it wasn't far in reading that I realized that I had to get my own copy. This is a book that you will want to underline, highlight and keep out on your desk to refer to often!

                    My personal collection of books on writing is small. I read all I can about writing (the how-to's, the work, the life, etc.) but most all of my reading material is from the library, and I am choosy about what books I buy. This book is a must have to my personal library, and tops on my favorites list!

                    This is a book from a woman who LIVES writing. She has written over 250+ books! WOW! Her advice is Inspirational,Obviously Experienced, Honest, and Funny.

                    Great book for writers!

                    5 out of 5 stars it truly is a book for writers.......2004-03-21

                    This isn't a book about writing so much as a book about people who love to write. People who have thoughts racing through their heads of what-ifs and wouldn't-that-be-neats. I enjoyed this book because it spoke to me. One of the reasons why she writes is just to find out how a story turns out, and I have felt that too. She mentions stories that tell her about herself, and I have sensed this as well. She reminds me that you can't please everybody so you might as well please yourself. And she writes because she wants to, isn't that the only reason that will make it worthwhile? After reading this book, I felt a kinship with her. I'd love to meat this woman.

                    She had many clever ways to present different aspects of writing and even though I already knew the basics that she presented, her approaches made me look at simple things in a new light. This book was sweet, playful, cheerful, and still serious at the same time.

                    5 out of 5 stars Finally, the clouds lift!.......2003-11-18

                    I have read numerous writing books, and while many offer solid, sensible advice (Writing Down the Bones, Bird by Bird), almost all focus on the pain and angst of writing. Yolen celebrates the silver lining rather than dwelling on the cloud. Yes, writing is hard work, but why do it if there is no joy? This is, by no means, just a fluffy, feel-good book. The advice is sage and easy to follow, and through it all is the invaluable reminder that you should be writing because there is nothing else you'd rather be doing.
