Repositioning Asia - From Bubble to Sustainable Economy

Know the right elements and trigger self-renewal. Integrate these critical factors and your organization will continue to win the heart, mind and value share of the customer. This is the central thrust of this book from these leading marketing gurus' - information hard learnt from the Asian economic crisis.

This text makes a systematic analysis of firstly the process through which organizations develop from new enterprises to solid performers, through to the need for renewal. It outlines the ways in which organizations must trigger their own crisis for renewal before the changing environment does it for them. Following this are the tools to attain and become a sustainable marketing enterprise.

From the initial environmental Outlook, through to the Business Architecture that needs to be built, to the Scorecard for ensuring success, a framework that incorporates planning, cultural and system design is developed. It is a framework to win the heart, mind, and value share of all customers. The external customer, the internal customer (employee) and the investing customer (the shareholder) are all recognized in this comprehensive strategic framework.

This book takes a strategic view of the myriad of factors required for organizations to survive and thrive in today's fast-paced global environment. No longer can organizations fail in their strategic planning, the Asian crisis has shown us all the weakness of a purely piecemeal tactical approach. Organizations must take a holistic approach, an integrative strategic approach, to developing a sustainable advantage. This book is a key text in my own strategic planning, integrating the works of many top authors and consultants into a comprehensive framework for business success.

5 out of 5 stars Even for those who is not interested in ASIA, this is 5*.......2000-11-11

This book will give you the right perspective about ASIA and what really happen during the crisis (Mid-97-99), which at one point devaluate the currency to 600% (imagine hard currency's value melt down to less than 17% of its former value).

Highly illustrated with ASIAN company's case studies. This book is divided into : Background (understanding the Asia Crisis), Transforming the Nations, and Revitalizing the Companies. A series of -prescriptions- to the crisis for any companies operating in the region.

Kotler needs no introduction. Hermawan Kertajaya is the highest paid strategy and marketing speaker in Indonesia, His ability to explain difficult concepts to churn able materials is a gem. He has written many books in Indonesia, and he has a massive -raving fans- ( for i am one).

For the companies who has the slightest interest in Asia, this book is not to be missed.

I believe CHAPTER 6 (page 163-200), A winning Business Strategy Model, THE SUSTAINABLE MARKETING ENTERPRISE MODEL is one of the FINEST MODEL for COMPANIES to follow. For anyone interested in MANAGEMENT at all, this is reason enough to read the book.

For anybody interested in MARKETING, THE 9 CORE ELEMENTS (p.180 to p.186) alone worth the price of the books, THIS IS A REAL GEM!!! It divide Strategy (Segmentation, Targeting, Positioning) to win the Mind Share, and Tactic (Differentiation, Marketing Mix, and Selling) to win Market Share, and VALUE ( Brand, Service and Process) to win Heart Share. This is NOT ONLY for ASIAN COMPANIES, but work universally for any companies. The idea is so simple yet so correct and powerful.

If i m forced to make a critic, the book is written a bit too-dry-for-my-taste style, too academic, so to speak, but that does not lessen the value in the slightest. Get a copy.

                  Book Description

"At places distant from where you are, but also uncomfortably close," writes David Takacs, "a holocaust is under way. People are slashing, hacking, bulldozing, burning, poisoning, and otherwise destroying huge swaths of life on Earth at a furious pace." And a cadre of ecologists and conservation biologists has responded, vigorously promoting a new definition of nature: biodiversity--advocating it in Congress and on the Tonight Show; whispering it into the ears of foreign leaders; redefining the boundaries of science and politics, ethics and religion, nature and our ideas of nature. These scientists have infused the environmental movement with new focus and direction, but by engaging in such activities, they jeopardize the societal trust that allows them to be public spokespersons for nature in the first place.

The Idea of Biodiversity analyzes what biodiversity represents to the biologists who operate in broader society on its behalf, drawing on in-depth interviews with the scientists most active today in the mission to preserve biodiversity, including Peter Raven, Thomas Lovejoy, Jane Lubchenco, and Paul Ehrlich. Takacs explores how and why these biologists shaped the concept of biodiversity and promoted it to society at large--examining their definitions of biodiversity; their opinions about spirituality and its role in scientific work; the notion of biodiversity as something of intrinsic value; and their views on biophilia, E. O. Wilson's idea that humans are genetically predisposed to love nature. Takacs also looks at the work of twentieth-century forerunners of today's conservation biologists--Aldo Leopold, Charles S. Elton, Rachel Carson, David Ehrenfeld--and points out their contributions to the current debates. He takes readers to Costa Rica, where a group of scientists is using biodiversity to remake nature and society. And in an extended section, he profiles the thoughts and work of E. O. Wilson.

"When I'm asked, 'should we save this species orthat species, or this place or that place?' the answer is always 'Yes!' with an exclamation point. Because it's obvious. And if you ask me to justify it, then I switch into a more cognitive consciousness and can start giving you reasons, economic reasons, aesthetic reasons. They're all dualistic, in a sense. But the feeling that underlies it is that 'yes!' And that 'yes!' comes out of the affirmation of being part of it all, being part of this whole evolutionary process. And agreeing with Arne Naess that each species, each entity, should be allowed to continue its evolution and to live out its destiny... just do its thing, as we say. Why not? And the 'why not?' is there's too many people."--Michael E. Soule, from an interview in The Idea of Biodiversity "An important contribution, a first distanced examination of a critical, modern topic by a scholarly, honest broker."--E. O. Wilson, Harvard University

Since its publication, this book has become standard reading in environmental studies and environmental ethics clases, and with good reason.
No book before or since has so probed how leading conservation scientists blance their role as neutral experts and passionately committed environmentalists.

I bought this book many years ago and learned a few important tips from it. Why it is good to sail into a persistent shift upwind, and how to choose a side downwind (and why jibe-sets are important) for example. Yes the information is useful, but the book requires diligent plowing through to turn up the occasional useful nugget -- I found the anecdotes tedious after a while. I picked it up again recently and found it all but unreadable. I have sailed for many years and still find this work terribly wordy and filled with ambiguous jargon.

A good author or teacher will distil a complex subject into simple understandable concepts that can then be presented and digested readily before they are developed further. This work falls short in that regard.

As a brief example of the pedantry in store for you, consider this passage: "Head-to head conflicts must be welcomed as opportunities to demonstrate superiority, with the recognition that most competitors will be adversely affected by the demonstration."

All that said, anyone with the patience (It'll take a winter) to tough it out and get through this book will probably learn quite a bit about racing small boats. Hopefully enough to rewrite it in a more clear, logical and intelligible manner.

5 out of 5 stars If you're ready for it.......2001-09-29

this is an outstanding and thorough evaluation of what is involved in sailing a good race beyond trimming the sails correctly and handling the boat well

4 out of 5 stars Thorough but somewhat technical, not for the beginner.......1998-07-23

Anyone who has read Mr. Walker's work understands that he takes a very technical and analyitcal look at the sport of yacht racing. It is definatly an effort to get through the book, and I feel that the beginner will not get much out of it. Overall, he is very thorough and on target. There is much to be learned from the book, and it will make a person a better racer.

One humorous aspect of the book (and all of Mr. Walker's writing, for that matter) is that most of his examples consists of times that he has screwed up and lost the race. The reader occasionally wonders whether he should be taking his advice.... ;) However, the examples are often excellent illustrations of the point he is trying to make.

                                      Book Description

A NEW PERSPECTIVE ON NATIVE AMERICAN HISTORY:
A CHRONOLOGICAL ACCOUNT OF ITS PLACE ON THE WORLD STAGE.
Native American History is a breakthrough reference guide, the first book of its kind to recognize and explore the rich, unfolding experiences of the indigenous American peoples as they evolved against a global backdrop. This fascinating historical narrative, presented in an illuminating and thought-provoking time-line format, sheds light on such events as:
                                      * The construction of pyramids--not only on the banks of the Nile but also on the banks of the Mississippi
                                      * The development of agriculture in both Mesopotamia and Mexico
                                      * The European discovery of a continent already inhabited by some 50 million people
                                      * The Native American influence on the ideas of the European Renaissance
                                      * The unacknowledged advancements in science and medicine created by the civilizations of the new world
                                      * Western Expansion and its impact on Native American land and traditions
                                      * The key contributions Native Americans brought to the Allied victory of World War II
                                      And much more!
This invaluable history takes an important first step toward a true understanding of the depth, breadth, and scope of a long-neglected aspect of our heritage.

                                      5 out of 5 stars objective.......2000-11-12

Judith Nies presents an excellent overview of both native american and european events as they parallel and eventually coincide with one another. Until reading her book, I was unaware of the extent of the brutality of the hispanic history towards the natives of all the areas of the americas; their responsibility for the genocide of millions of natives through a combination of enslavement, warfare and disease, creating a world where the natives preferred to kill their children and commit suicide rather than to continue to live. This is followed by a second tragedy, the establishment of the african slave trade to replace what they destroyed. Perhaps what is most effective in her writing is the objective and factual presentation of a complete history, free of personal or cultural bias. Recommended reading for anyone.

4 out of 5 stars great referrence book.......2000-07-16

like the title says, it's a great referrence book for those who wish for a brief overview of native history in the present-day united states as well as much of mesoamerica. good starting off point for further investigation. the great thing about the book is that it not only is a chronology of native events (which appear on the right side of a page), it also displays many significant events throughout the world (which appear on the left side of a page) so the reader may gain a greater perspective. also includes short articles thrown in for good measure and to expand a bit on topics such as the iroquois influence on the u.s. constitution, to tenochtitlan (present-day mexico city, site of ancient aztec capital), as well as brief introductions to certain time periods. not a thorough examination, but a nice listing of significant events in native history. recommended nonetheless.

5 out of 5 stars A Very Educational Book on Native Americans.......2000-05-25

Many Americans have some Indian Ancestry. We need a book such as this to give us an accurate view of history, and recognize the accomplishments and the tragedies of the Native Americans. Judith Nies did the world a great service by documenting these events in an easy to follow format.

4 out of 5 stars Should be required reading.......2000-03-29

This book should be required reading, at least for any member of the government who has dealings with Native Americans, if not for every American History class in the country. It is a bit dry stylistically, which is all that keeps it from five stars, but it contains an amazing wealth of information that balances out the general viewpoint of American history as it is taught in public schools. It should be considered an invaluable asset in any attempt to present a balanced perspective on our country's history. Ignoring the criminally dishonorable way in which those of European descent have treated the Natives will NOT make it go away, nor even lessen the karmic debt. Only by learning about and acknowledging the truth can we even BEGIN to decide what steps need to be taken now and in the future.

5 out of 5 stars Highly original and comprehensive view of American history.......1998-06-11

This book is indispensable for every reader interested in how America got to be that way. In side-by-side columns, the author chronicles the experiences of America's indigenous peoples set against global events. It sheds light on events both little and well known--everything from the construction of a pyramid on the banks of the Mississippi that is second in size only to those of Egypt to the contributions in agriculture that Native Americans gave to European settlers, including corn and tomatoes. It punctures myths like the idea that America was a virgin continent. Extremely well researched and illustrated.

                                          Book Description

Reading Images focuses on the multi-layered relationships between the textual image and its reader-viewer in the Apocalypse manuscripts produced in England during the thirteenth century, a period of profound changes in the social and cultural fabric. The exponential expansion in the production and dissemination of illuminated manuscripts that occurred at this time provided a critical, cultural mechanism for the creation of new technologies of the self. As the Apocalypse narrative was visualized in pictures, it became a powerful paradigm within which problematic contemporary experiences such as anti-Judaism, the later Crusades, and expectations of the world's end could be defined.
