Customer Reviews:
GREAT BOOK!.......2000-10-16
Franklin Ashby has taken quotes and quips from some of the greatest minds in business and used them to illustrate why some corporate culture changes succeed and others fail. I would recommend this book to anyone thinking of culture change or those in the midst of culture changes (as in my case) where they are not meeting expectations. In my case, this book has helped identify what went wrong and why, and how to fix it. The book is thought provoking, insightful, and stimulating. I highly recommend it. Best business book I have read to date.

Book Description
In 1951, the geneticist Luigi Luca Cavalli-Sforza was teaching in Parma when a student--a priest named Antonio Moroni--told him about rich church records of demography and marriages between relatives. After convincing the Church to open its records, Cavalli-Sforza, Moroni, and Gianna Zei embarked on a landmark study that would last fifty years and cover all of Italy. This book assembles and analyzes the team's research for the first time.
Using blood testing as well as church records, the team investigated the frequency of consanguineous marriages and its use for estimating inbreeding and studying the relations between inbreeding and drift. They tested the importance of random genetic drift by studying population structure through demography of the last three centuries, using it to predict the spatial variation of frequencies of genetic markers. The authors find that drift-related genetic variation, including its stabilization by migration, is best predicted by computer simulation. They also analyze the usefulness and limits of the concept of deme for defining Mendelian populations. The genetic effect of consanguineous marriage on recessive genetic diseases and for the detection of dominance in metric characters are also studied.
Ultimately bringing together the many strands of their massive project, Cavalli-Sforza, Moroni, and Zei are able to map genetic drift in all of Italy's approximately 8,000 communes and to demonstrate the relationship between each locality's drift and various ecological and demographic factors. In terms of both methods and findings, their accomplishment is tremendously important for understanding human social structure and the genetic effects of drift and inbreeding.

MMMMMMM, fresh deer!.......2005-08-01
This is one of the best tiger books I've ever read. It has great facts, terrifically beautiful photographs, and many cool images in the photos, such as tigers fighting, pouncing, mating, and roaring so loud everyone and everything can hear them. Lee Server, the one who made this book, is an expert on tigers as well as lions, and if you want to learn about one or both of these animals, then you need to buy one of his books fast. Oh, and you will also be surprised at just how good a job was done on this thriller of a book, and anyone who likes nature or carnivores will enjoy it. I recommend it to all who like to read, as a matter of fact. It's near perfect and near mint. And if you love blood and guts, then the photos of mealtime are for you.
Book Description
Water-loving people of modest means have lived aboard houseboats for centuries, and why not? Unlike expensive, cramped, and hard-to-build liveaboard cruising boats, spacious, homey houseboats are easily and economically constructed from commmon lumberyard materials. And unlike those high-priced waterfront cottages, there's no lawn to mow and often no property taxes. And if you don't like the new neighbors, just up anchor and be off.
This book tells those who would live afloat how to design and build their own place on the water. There are detailed plans and building instructions for sample houseboats; help with designing a personalized houseboat from scratch; resource-stingy contrivances for easing life aboard, including a solar oven, a windmill-powered washing machine, and innovative power-, water-, and waste-management systems; and more.

Real-world House Boats for the Rest of Us........2006-12-05
First off, its important not to get the kind of boats this author is writing about mixed up with the strange beasts seen on Lake Powell - Conder is describing homes that float rather than those that move around at (relatively) high speed.
This is the best book I've come across if you are planning on building a houseboat. Some of the reviewers below criticize it for being dated. True: the prices of materials are off. But most of the information is right on and fairly timeless (Barron's comments [below] are simply not accurate - the book was first released in 1992 - not '53 as he states - he must be writing about another book).
The book is inspirational in that it serves to remind the reader that there's more to life than a house on a quarter acre with a mortgage.
The bottom line is that this book offers all the information needed to plan, build, launch and live in a floating home.
Handmade Houseboats.......2006-11-05
This book was unhelpful and dated. I sold it to a used bookstore shortly after
I looked at it. If you are looking for information on bulding a contemporary houseboat, do
NOT purchase this book.
Good book........2005-08-16
I read this book, and in August 2005 built a floating 10x12' shed housing a 12kw generator on a 12'x20' barge floating on 34 plastic 55 gallon drums using the methods described in this book. I bought those drums for $11 a piece, and found out later they can be had for $8 or maybe even for free. Yeah, the information may be old, but it's still good. It's a way to get yourself out on the water for pennies on the dollar of what you'd have to pay to buy a used commercially built houseboat, and it'll be new and things inside it will work, and not need constant fixing. I had the barge itself built in 3 days, helped mostly by an unruley 12 year old. It could have easily been 36 x 12' and had a nice little house on it. One caveat: You won't be able to insure a craft built using this method. Even if you don't build using the barrel raft method, there's lots of other good information in the book about houseboats, and I like the Jimmy Buffetesque attitude that the author seems to have.
Historic Information.......2005-01-05
The author seems to be a true original and obviously has a wealth of experience with houseboats.
Trouble is, most of the content of the book is over 40 years old. Since the book was originally copyrighted in 1953 materials and techniques have advanced by light years.
This book might be helpful if you're building your own boat on a really tight budget and and you think you can benefit from early 50's technology, or, you like reading about older boatbuilding techniques.
re - garys latest review - please delete !.......2004-01-18
Webmaster
Would you be so kind as to please delete my last review sent today. I do not want the website mentioned to be published as the boats are no longer there.
Thankyou.
Customer Reviews:
Extremely useful for learners of Vietnamese too!.......2004-05-28
Extremely useful and probably the first dictionary-cum-phrasebook for all Vietnamese learners (or just travellers in Vietnam) who can read English. A comprehensive English-Vietnamese word list covers all common words used in daily conversation, in some words simple dialogues are provided. The Vietnamese-English section is rather weak.
This book is not as popular as the Lonely Planet phrasebook which is really a ptiy because it's much better. Whenever I met some other travellers using the LP phrasebook (Vietnamese) I showed them this one of mine, all of them were impressed and hoped to buy this instead!
Very Helpful.......2001-06-05
I would definately recommend this book to anyone traveling to Vietnam and wanting to converse with the locals. I took this book on my first trip to Vietnam, knowing only basic Vietnamese. I was able to have conversations with the people I met. The book is very easy to read, and the dictionary is English/Vietnamese & Vietnamese/English. The English/Vietnamese dictionary gives helpful phrases for each of the words too. There's also a pronounciation guide to help you say the words correctly. A must have!
Better guide book than some........2000-02-27
The book is a travlers phrase book and mini dictionary. Small enough to fit in the pocket.I think it's much better than the Lonely Planet Vietnamese phrase book and it costs a dollar less too! There are "cuss words" titled Coloquialism on page 142. I can't imagine why anyone would want to use them on a trip (i.e., don't do it). So forget that page, and enjoy the rest of the book. Plenty of tips for travelers, like using mosquito repellent after dark because of the possibility of Malaria.A very useful little book.
Informative in an eclectic way.......1998-06-24
This is a good phrasebook... but really not for the phrases itself. The best part is the cultural tidbits that are sprinkled throughout the English/Vietnamese section. The book gives such helpful tips as "Don't kiss your partner in public" and "Riding on pedicabs is dangerous."
The words selected were very basic and the approximated pronunciation spellings were inaccurate.
Also be warned of a page marked "Colloquialisms", in other words, profanity. I had the misfortune of trying these out and my listener, though a close friend, was very offended.
Not a bad buy for the money, but I wouldn't pay any more for it.

Actually... useful!.......2001-11-16
I like phrasebooks and dictionaries, but the one thing that surprised me was when I took this little book to Bali. Practically everything I needed to know or look up... was in there! However it was managed, the choice of words to include was very practical.

Power in your pocket.......2001-09-18
I am about to travel to Thailand 5th time and I have found this book usefull in most everyday situations. Explanations of Thai speech and writing are good and easy to follow. English-Thai section is brilliant for its size and Thai-English is useful after getting basics strait. Translating Thai text to English is bit labour intensive.
Start Speaking Thai When You Get There.......2000-08-20
I am sent by my company to work in Bangkok for a year or maybe two. Bangkok is a wonderful place and the people are very hospitable. However, the most difficult thing is communication. Most Thais I meet on the streets can hardly speak any English. What I need is a book that is handy and can get me to speak basic Thai immediately. This is the book that I needed all along. You can only imagine how much I enjoy practicing Thai with Thais. My Thai has improved tremendously ever since I bought this book. I would say that if you are conscientious in studying this book, you will speak reasonable Thai within a month. This book is a must buy for all expatriates working in Thailand.
Best Thai language pocket/reference book plus great price.......1998-11-06
I lived in Thailand for six months and had no previous Thai language training. This is the book I found the most helpful. The first thing a beginner should do is study the pronunciation guide in the front of the book. Once you have that down you're set! You can use this book to look up a particular word or look up the key word in a common phrase, and chances are the phrase you want to say will be listed under that word. Very intuitive (for me anyway).
Geart!.......1998-10-14
This book is terrific!! It has English-thai, and Thai-english sections, and shows Thai with consistant rominazation, plus thai script.
Now, the best part of the book is the intro (before the dictionary begins) to Thai language. It gives all the basic rules (summed up nicer than many Thai language books!) Rules for different kinds of questions and everything. Even a section on profanity (so you'll know when people are upset:) ANd all examples give thai script, roman-thai (including tone marks), and english.
I highly recommend this book to anyone even remotely interesed in the Thai Languages. Besides, it's got a GREAT price :)

Customer Reviews:
Not a calligraphy manual, but..........2003-09-10
...still an enjoyable read for the price.
A good portion of the writing samples included in Mr. Bickham's book were not, in fact, considered calligraphy in their time, but rather to exemplify legible and easy styles of business hand, intended, as per the book's subtitle, for clerks and others whose jobs necessitated a good deal of writing and record-keeping, prior to the era of the typewriter. To the reviewer who complained of the cursive scripts being illegible, try reading handwritten cursive a bit more often; the scripts do retain certain archaisms such as the extended S, but are not significantly different from, for instance, the Spencerian system of cursive penmanship, which dominated American schools throughout the 19th century. If you want illegible (to the modern reader's eye) calligraphy, try picking your way through an illuminated medieval manuscript.
That said, this caveat must be included: this book does -not- give explicit instruction on how to reproduce the styles, it is merely a collection of the best samples-- it's best for those who already have some grasp of some form of calligraphy or antiquated penmanship. For those -looking- to learn, I would recommend Theory of Spencerian Penmanship as a starting point, at the very least. For those who have no interest in taking up calligraphy and merely enjoy looking at elegant handwriting, it's a delightful curiosity and memento of the vanished culture of penmanship; much of the writing samples given are quite simply beautiful to look at; though this particular calligraphy enthusiast would hope that admiration of beautiful writing would spur more people to take up interest in a now-esoteric art.
Penmanship Made Easy -- Not!.......2002-07-26
I have trouble calling this a book. It's a bound collection of calligraphy, and not very good calligraphy at that. Many letters are unreadable. Penmanship should be to help communicate by written word. This book is not helpful unless you're experienced with calligraphy.
Fine examples of formal handwriting in the 1700's.......1998-10-30
Mr. Bickham was an 18th century engraver and calligrapher. Although the book (orignally published ca 1733) begins with a set of rules on how to form letters, these rules and the book's examples are best studied by an experienced calligrapher. This is NOT a beginner's book. But it is delightful for those who like to examine the formal hands of nearly three centuries ago. The examples are not just alphabets but writing samples. Fancy "Content alone is true happiness; or the Country Lass"? How about "Beauty's a Fair But Fading Flower"? There are many calligraphic examples from copperplate to blackhand. As the gentlelman says, everything the "young clerk's assistant" might need.
