5 out of 5 stars Great Economics and a Pleasure to Read.......2004-06-05

Economic science, like most social sciences, builds upon the works of previous generations. In order to leave time for new research and discovery, the accumulated wisdom of past generations is taught to new generations through summaries in textbooks and lectures.

This logical progression of economic science makes sense if the ideas and importance of past discoveries can be easily (and properly) conveyed by individuals unfamiliar with the original texts. For example, few physicists need to read the work of Newton to understand his discoveries and their importance to an understanding of how the world works today.

To some extent, the same may not be true about economics. While some ideas, such as a consumption function might be easily conveyed without reading the original texts, the same may not be true of all economic insights. The distillation of a lifetime of work into a few paragraphs may not only fail to properly convey the important nature of an author?s work, but the distillation process might, over time, distort the message so much that it an economists work is frequently interpreted to mean something very different from what was originally intended.

University of Richmond economist Jonathan B. Wight clearly believes this to be the case with Adam Smith. Since few economists today read THE WEALTH OF NATIONS, let alone the book Smith thought was his best THE THEORY OF MORAL SENTIMENTS, their knowledge of his work is often limited to ?the invisible hand.?

The invisible hand is frequently taken to mean that selfishness is enough to make markets work. As Wight demonstrates in the book, Smith?s true insight was that ?selfishness is simply not enough? to make markets work.

Wight has undertaken an important task with this book. Not only is it good fiction (at least to a graduate student in economics), it is good economics and good pedagogy. SAVING ADAM SMITH will do more for economics than 90 percent of the articles in the AMERICAN ECONOMIC REVIEW.

1 out of 5 stars Don't Bother.......2004-05-28

This book was very disappointing because I was hoping to get a new perspective on economic thought. However, what I read was nothing of the sort. It was nothing more than a silly over-hyped (on this website) novel featuring unrealistic and dislikable characters. There was little action in the realm of reality. The whole premise of the book is absolute nonsense, however perhaps it could have basic principles of econ that may be useful in the classroom. It is basically a textbook converted into a novel ( a lovestory interwoven with economic history????)

1 out of 5 stars bad economics at it's worst.......2004-01-16

Ok, I am an economist, and I know that no self respecting economist these days actually believes this stuff. There is little free market in the US, there are women who don't need a man to tell her about economics (this book could not have made women sound any more stupid), and there is little virtue about this book. The fact is, the economics in this book will not make you smarter, but will simply keep the rich in control. And, perhaps the worst is, the writing is simply horrible. Practice your market skills by avoiding this book.

5 out of 5 stars Economics for Real Life.......2003-02-16

All anyone ever hears about Adam Smith concerns his Wealth of Nations, everywhere from Economics class to movies like "A Beautiful Mind." This book is a wonderful opportunity to learn more about Adam Smith as a person and about what he really thought. Instead of dry biography, this book brings Adam Smith and his theories about economics and society directly into today's world. The story is funny and the characters are interesting and likeable; the novel makes the economic theories relatively painless. I've heard that a true economist is someone who sees something work in real life and wonders if it would work in theory; I think it's important for people to learn that this icon of economics was more complicated than that, and because of that I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Review of Adam Smith.......2002-11-16

I read Saving Adam Smith because the author, Dr. Jonathan Wight, was coming to my school as a visiting author. I did not know anything about Adam Smith or economics before I read it, but I learned about markets, economy and self interest v. greed. I thought the book was easy to read and I was surprised to understand the economic theory in the book. I liked the adventerous plot that kept me intested. I liked the storyline about the drive across country and all the trouble they got into. It was a fun book to read.

            Book Description

Although stem rust is mostly controlled by means of resistance cultivars, leaf and stripe rust continue to be major problems in many wheat-growing areas of the world. Wheat Rusts: An Atlas of Resistance Genes provides a basis to identify genes for resistance to stem, leaf and stripe rusts of wheat. Typical phenotypes associated with most known genes for resistance to the three rust diseases of wheat are illustrated in full colour. This book will assist the plant breeder to identify candidate resistance genes, thereby saving substantial time and resources before a single cross is made for genetic analysis.
Prepared by well-known specialists from a leading international laboratory, Wheat Rusts: An Atlas of Resistance Genes comprises an introductory chapter, details of individual resistance genes, appendices and an index. Details for each gene include chromosome location, aspects of genetics and pathogen variation, the effect of environment on expression, origin, availability in genetic and breeding stocks, and use in agriculture.
Audience: All wheat researchers including geneticists, pathologists, breeders and agronomists. This book is a unique and invaluable aid to all involved in developing wheats for resistance to the rust pathogens.

              Book Description

Research on sensory processing or the way animals see, hear, smell, taste, feel and electrically and magnetically sense their environment has advanced a great deal over the last fifteen years. This book discusses the most important themes that have emerged from recent research and provides a summary of likely future directions. The book starts with two sections on the detection of sensory signals over long and short ranges by aquatic animals, covering the topics of navigation, communication, and finding food and other localized sources. The next section, the co-evolution of signal and sense, deals with how animals decide whether the source is prey, predator or mate by utilizing receptors that have evolved to take full advantage of the acoustical properties of the signal. Organisms living in the deep-sea environment have also received a lot of recent attention, so the next section deals with visual adaptations to limited light environments where sunlight is replaced by bioluminescence and the visual system has undergone changes to optimize light capture and sensitivity. The last section on central co-ordination of sensory systems covers how signals are processed and filtered for use by the animal. This book will be essential reading for all researchers and graduate students interested in sensory systems.

This is an outstanding book for adults who know the game but who have never coached before. Moreover, "Coaching Kids to Play Baseball & Softball," is an excellent text for adults who have the time to coach a local community youth team but do not have a strong knowledge of baseball and softball.

Authors Kurt Aschermann and Gerard O'Shea break the teaching process into a simple step-by-step approach. The language is straightforward and not filled with trite baseball cliches. The book does cover common baseball and softball "buzz words" but does so in a succinct and clear fashion. All in all,I was truly impressed with Chapter Two, "Planning a Meaningful Practice," where the authors describe in great detail how to build self-esteem, avoid injuries, build teamwork and teach the game properly.

Other important chapters include throwing & catching, hitting, pitching, catching, playing the infield, playing the outfield, managing and coaching a game and a very valuable section that reviews reminders for your gameday/practice clipboard. This is a fun book. It starts with the basics and advances to more comprehensive levels of the game. Still and all, a strong feature of this book is the importance of sportsmanship and how every player and coach who puts on a uniform is an ambassador of the community. Recommended.

Pros know that the real secret of surveillance lies in the skill of the operators, not in high-tech gadgets. This book is for the true practitioners of the craft. It focuses on tactics that can only be learned from stalking the streets and standing in the shadows.

This book is OK, but all the information is described in huge blocks of hard to follow copy with very few diagrams or case studies. You could probably get the same quality of stuff from an open-source search on Google. The methods described are at a basic to intermediate level.

I bought 'Advanced Surveillance" by Peter Jenkins as well and would recommend you buy it instead. You'll get far more value for your money! The techniques in this book (Advanced Surveillance) are at a far higher level and are described in more detail with lots of diagrams, case studies and examples.

                    5 out of 5 stars A highly recommended read.......2006-05-16

I work plainclothes in law enforcement and found this book to be very practical. I thought it was very well written. I can tell that the author has to have real world experience because only somebody who's worked the streets could lay this out so clearly. I picked up some very useful tips that my team either never knew or just overlooked. I highly reccomend this book to anyone in a related field. I would've liked a little more detail on establishing a good
observation post. And it is a little heavy on the unlimited resource end like the 4 member teams and the communications vest. Other than that it was definitely worth the read.

4 out of 5 stars A few Words From the Author .......2005-01-18

The following is submitted by the author as a rebuttal to two of the Amazon.com customer reviews of this book:

In general, this book was written shortly after the conclusion of the Cold War, and in a large part intended to be a tribute to the legacy of the cloak and dagger intrigue that characterized that era. In those days we knew exactly who the enemy was. At the time, none of us could have predicted the emergent environment wherein the threats to U.S. citizens and interests proliferated significantly. This new reality has made the book more widely applicable to security professionals now then when it was originally published, which is the reason its sales have steadily increased over the years.

Although the review does state that the book is "worth buying", the three star review submitted by "RunAndShoot" criticizes the book for being written in a "simple" manner.
This book is not intended to entertain, it is intended to inform. A primary purpose for this book is that it be used as a training resource by security professionals. For this reason, it is written in a very detailed and straight forward manner. The feedback received from security professionals is that the book conveys very complex techniques in a manner that is easily understood, and easily translated into training programs.

As to the two star review by "truthsleuthpi" that criticizes the book for being of "little value to private investigators" -- I do not question the reviewer's credentials, but it is misleading to give a publication a poor rating because it does not necessarily apply to the specific circumstance of a resource-constrained PI. In fact, the book clearly addresses the premise of the reviewer's critique in the preface as follows:
"A surveillance operation can be conducted from one extreme of detail to the other. This book instructs to the extreme of a fully integrated, systematic effort employed for extended periods of time with absolute discretion. Granted, the requirements of many readers may not reach this extreme, but the information herein will satisfy the objectives of surveillance at any point along the operational continuum. Although the degree of sophistication detailed in this book may not be necessary for many surveillance operations, any individuals with the expertise to operate at the extreme of sophistication can certainly adapt to any operational requirement."
Therefore, the book is criticized based on its relevance to one reader rather than its technical content. Also, one would assume that even those who operate on a small-scale level would take professional interest in how the world's elite operate. Despite some questionable contradictions, it appears that the reviewer does exercise innovation in that he uses book reviews at Amazon.com as a means to advertise for business.

The reviewers each have a perspective, but the facts are that this book is regarded as a "classic", has steadily increasing sales, is every bit as relevant today as the date it was published, and it is widely used as a training resource by such major professional security agencies as Wackenhut International.

Although the book has five star reviews and the author agrees with these ratings, this "review" is submitted with four stars because a rating is required, but the purpose of this rebuttal is to address specific reviewer issues and not impact the Amazon.com average customer review for this publication.

2 out of 5 stars Of Little Value To Private Investigators..........2004-12-01

As a licensed private investigator, college instructor of private investigation courses, and an experienced covert surveillance operative, I can personally tell you that most of the techniques described in this book are of little value to private sector investigators like myself. The vast majority of techniques described assume that the "surveillance team" has an unlimited supply of resources and operatives (i.e. a law enforcement team). Anyone with even remote covert surveillance experience knows that this will seldom (more likely never) be the case.

Most private sector covert surveillance operatives (i.e. private investigators) work alone or in teams of two (when and only when the Client can afford it of course). Therefore, the vast majority of the techniques covered in this book are of little use to most private investigators. There is some (emphasis added) good information in this book, but certainly not what one would expect based on the title.

If you are looking for a title that actually contains useful (emphasis added) surveillance techniques/procedures, I would highly recommend: "Covert Surveillance: The Manual of Surveillance Training" by Peter Jenkins (ISBN: 0953537803). I have had the pleasure of reading this fine text, which I consider to be the only covert surveillance techniques/procedures book worth recommending. Unfortunately, I have been unable to find a copy for purchase.

As always, check with your local library or bookstore to see if you can read/review this or any title before deciding to make a purchase. This method has effectively allowed me to make the most of my investigative library budget.

I hope you found this review helpful. [...]

3 out of 5 stars Very simple minded.......2000-04-17

First, this books does have some interesting ideas and is worth buying. However, it is written at an intelligence level that would insult a bright sixth grader. Also, it assumes you will have half a dozen people involved in the surveillance of one person and is not aimed at an individual working at surveillance alone.

                      Book Description

The Lindisfarne Gospels is an eighth-century masterpiece of Celtic illumination. After careful study, Aidan Meehan has beautifully redrawn more than fifty designs that appear on its pages. Each one has been taken from its amazingly intricate background, often extricated from other entangled ornaments, and enlarged. The original manuscript page from which each design is derived is provided so you can refer to reproductions of the gospel book and see the decorative style and colors used by the scribes in the eighth century. Based on the four types of pattern in the Lindisfarne Gospels--knotwork, spirals, mazes, and animal patterns, with special emphasis on the jewel-like birds and dogs--the drawings range from simple to complex and will inspire you to try out your own painting techniques and color schemes. Artists, designers, craftspeople, and anyone fascinated by the Celtic legacy will find this an invaluable work of reference and pleasure.

                          Book Description

How can Cuba address the challenges of economic development and transformation that have bedeviled so many Latin American and Eastern European countries? What are the universally common macroeconomic and societal challenges it faces and the specific peculiarities that have emerged after a decade-long transformation of its economy? For the Cuban and American social scientists and policy experts writing in this timely and provocative volume, the answer lies in examining Cuba's development trajectory by delving into issues ranging from the political economy of reform to their impact on specific sectors including export development, foreign direct investment, and U.S.-Cuba trade. Moreover, the volume also draws attention to the intersection between economic reform and societal dynamics by exploring changes in household consumption, socio-economic mobility, as well as remittances and their effects, while remaining steadfast in its focus on their policy implications for Cuba's future.

                            Book Description

Cuba faced an economic meltdown of catastrophic proportions in the early 1990s when covert subsidies from the former Soviet Union disappeared. In mid-decade, the island republic's government instituted a number of reform policies, including economic decentralization, opening the economy to foreign investment, allowing limited small-scale private enterprise, legalization of the dollar as a currency, and the establishment of farmers' markets and agricultural quasi-cooperatives.

These policies, designed to deal with the worst of the economic problems facing Cuba, have had inconsistent results. Opening the economy to foreign enterprise through joint ventures with state firms has been successful in key sections such as tourism, cigar marketing, and nickel, which now contribute large shares of export earnings. Basic educational and health services have been substantially maintained, and there has been some economic recuperation.

However, some parts of the old state economy-especially the sugar industry and biotechnological complexes-have performed poorly. The standard of living remains far below levels of the mid-1980s. In fact, the true purchasing power of people's incomes has declined drastically. This can be blamed in part on the shrinkage of goods and services available through the low-price peso economy and the ever-increasing volume of the same sold through the high-price dollar store systems.

These and other serious weaknesses continue to afflict the Cuban economy, raising questions concerning the wisdom of the current policies and the sustainability of the recovery. In this volume, leading scholars from around the world offer new analyses of such central issues as the social security system, the software industry, the microenterprise sector, corruption in the economy, policy making regarding the dollar and the euro, and problems facing the sugar industry. The contributors proffer revealing insights into future prospects for the Cuban economy.

                                              Book Description

China is rich in contradictions for U.S. firms. The world's most populous nation, China covers an area larger than the United States. Yet the China market is small and concentrated in a few areas along the eastern seaboard. China is one of the world's oldest civilizations, with thousands of years of history, literature and culture. Yet the People's Republic is a mere 50 years old and most of the laws and regulations governing business and trade have been written in the past twenty years. Courtesy toward guests is a virtue in Chinese culture, and Chinese people can be extraordinarily hospitable and kind. Yet everyday discourse in China is rude and confrontational and the China market is full of cheats and swindlers. China is a communist country; the first article of the Chinese constitution states that China is a socialist country under the leadership of the proletariat. Yet, over the past twenty years China has moved from a planned to market economy and is now in many ways more capitalist than communist.

                                              1. Many of the stunning contradictions in China have been nurtured by the unprecedented changes of the past twenty years. Since the beginning of the policy of "reform and opening-up" in 1979, China's economy has grown more than tenfold. Previously rationed goods such as bicycles, textiles and grains are now in over-supply. Foreign invested firms, practically non-existent in the 1970s, now number over 300,000 and account for almost 50% of China's exports. Foreign trade has grown from $38 billion in 1980 to over $361 billion in 1999. Although most Chinese firms remain relatively small, under-capitalized and poorly managed, there are pockets of excellence in Chinese industry. Chinese firms have competed successfully with world leaders in the white goods and home electronics markets. Chinese PC manufacturers have won back market share from such firms as Compaq and IBM.

China is a market with vast potential. The trick is realizing that potential. China's pending accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO) will make it easier for U.S. firms to do this, but it is false to believe that WTO entry provides an end-all solution. Do your due diligence - twice. Opportunities are available in China, but companies must pay heed to the many obstacles. This report can help identify both.

                                                Book Description

The impact of Japanese locations on their host countries is also studied. While Japanese industrial units may represent a challenge to European competitors they may also accelerate useful technological awareness. The macroeconomic impact, on employment in particular, is negligible but regional or sectoral impacts can be sizeable.
In this work the contributors examine the evolution of Japanese direct investment in Europe and explores its determinants. They illustrate how, as multinationals, Japanese firms adapt to local conditions and try to take advantage of a global organisation. In this respect three areas are more particularly explored; human resource management, relationships with suppliers and R&D unit locations.
