Book Description
What happened in the California energy crisis, why it happened and who was to blame. California's energy deregulation is one of the biggest regulatory, political and public policy mistakes in the last hundred years. Partially deregulating California's electricity markets has worked a strange alchemy on politics and business. The results cast a harsh light on: * Partisans -- who didn't understand their ideology * NIMBY consumers -- who wanted cheap energy * Political compromisers -- who proved worse than extremists * Explotative corporations -- who misread the situation These factors turned economic outcomes upside down: smart players failed and bumblers stumbled into windfalls. And while California went dark, other states' deregulation succeeded.

Book Description
This book investigates the concepts and instruments for managing change in companies striving toward a market orientation in Poland. The focus is on the identification of factors, which have led to the considerable success of certain corporations, in spite of the very dynamic environment in transformation countries since 1989. The analysis considers problems and solutions for all the relevant stakeholder relationships. Although the case study is largely based on Poland, the book also contains research papers on the economic, political, and social context of doing business in Central and Eastern Europe.

Description:
The paper investigates the ameliorative properties of pine cultures in their site conditions on the island of Rab. Pines, as allochthonous and pioneer species, were used to afforest degraded and devastated areas on the island because of their important role in the process of progressive vegetation succession. Twelve sample plots were established in the forest pine cultures. They encompassed various pine cultures (maritime pine, Aleppo pine and black pine) in diverse parent substrates (limestone, reddish-brown quartz sand, Flysch) and different soil types (eutric cambisol, cambisol on limestone, red soil and rendzina). To process the data, the following multivariate analyses were used: Two Way Indicator Species Analysis (TWINSPAN), Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA) and Indicator Species Analysis. The research results showed differences among the forest cultures of black pine, Aleppo pine and maritime pine. A relationship was found between the quantitative environmental variables (slope, pH, humus, the C/N ratio, age and the quantity of leaf litter) and the vegetation. As well as the relationship of the species towards qualitative variables (type of pine culture, parent substrate, soil type, exposition).

Description:
Improper cultivation practices are seriously and considerably degrading native forest ecosystems in the Bale Mountains of the south-eastern highlands of Ethiopia. This study investigated the effects of land use change on the contents of soil organic carbon (SOC) and total nitrogen in three adjacent land uses: native forest, cropland and grazing. A total of 108 soil samples (3 replicationsx3 treatmentsx4 profilesx3 soil depth layers-0-0.2, 0.2-0.4 and 0.4-1.0m) were collected for laboratory analyses. Results showed that organic carbon and total nitrogen contents of soils were significantly lower in cropland (p
<0.001) compared to the contents in grazing and native forest. Conversion of a forest ecosystem into cropland during a 15-year period has significantly reduced the original amount of soil organic carbon and total nitrogen in the top 1m soil layer by 30.9 and 32.1%, respectively. The findings suggested that conversion of native forest and the subsequent cultivation had resulted in a distinct decrease in the amount of SOC and total N of the surface soil due to the lower supply and return of organic matter to the soil system. Soil carbon content and total nitrogen can be protected and maintained through improving existing land use practices and proper cropland management.

Description:
Vegetation cover in the Gran Sabana highlands (southern Venezuela) appears as a complex mosaic of tall to low forests, bush vegetation and savannas. In this study we described the changes in structure and floristic composition along a forest-savanna gradient consisted of tall forest (TF), medium forest (MF), low forest (LF) and open savanna (S), and analyse the possible reasons for the observed changes. The results showed no obvious differences in the soils properties along the vegetation gradient. All sites presented shallow soils (
<50cm depth) with high percentage of sand and with dominance of quartz, kaolinite and oxides of iron and aluminum. The soil chemical characteristics were unfavorable and similar along the vegetation gradient. The major soil difference was related with the presence of an organic layer on the soil surface of TF and MF and their absence on the soils of LF and S. Abundant residues of large trees were found on the forest floor of TF, MF and LF. These residues presented no signs of burning in TF, while in MF and particularly in LF were charred. This observation joined to the presence of charcoal within the mineral soil of S and the absence of the organic surface layer in LF and S indicated that fire has affected with different intensity or frequency the studied vegetation gradient. Large differences in the structure and floristic composition were found between TF, MF, LF and S. These differences could not be explained by changes in the mineralogical and chemical characteristics of the soil but only by fire which triggers the conversion. We concluded that the studied vegetation gradient represents stages in a temporal change from forest to savanna caused by fire, and this change has implied an impoverishment of tree species, a drastic reduction of biomass in terms of basal area, a drastic change of the floristic composition and the loss of the organic surface layer, which play an important role to maintain the fertility of these soils.

Description:
Silvicultural site preparation treatments that involve severe soil and forest floor disturbance may, in the long-term, reduce soil productivity and negate the initial increased forest productivity obtained by controlling root diseases or vegetation. The effect of a range of stump removal treatments on selected soil chemical and physical properties, and growth of planted lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta) and hybrid spruce (Picea glauca (Moench) VossxPicea engelmanii Parry), was examined at three sites in the Interior Cedar-Hemlock (ICH) zone of British Columbia. Changes in forest floor and mineral soil chemistry and bulk density were measured 1 year after treatment and again 9 years later. Tree growth and foliar nutrient status of planted seedlings were measured 3, 5 and 10 years after planting. Forest floor mass and depth were altered by treatment, and decreased significantly between years 1 and 10. Mineral soil bulk density was greater in all stump-removal treatments than in the non-stumped treatment in year 1; however, 10 years after treatment, bulk densities had decreased and no treatment effects were apparent. Changes in forest floor chemistry that were measured in year 1 had largely disappeared by year 10. Mineral soil chemical concentrations were not affected by treatment at any time, except for a significant increase in carbon (C) concentration between years 1 and 10. Lodgepole pine height and diameter were increased over the measurement period by the most intense, scarified treatment, whereas spruce growth was largely unaffected by stump removal treatment. Both tree growth and soil measurements suggest that, on the moderately coarse soils within the climatic regime of the present study, soil limits to tree growth have not been exceeded.

Description:
Forests that were subject to frequent wildfires, such as ponderosa pine/Douglas-fir forests, had fire-return intervals of approximately 6-24 years. However, fire suppression over the last century has increased the fire-return interval by a factor of 5 in these forests, possibly resulting in changes to the soil. The objective of this study was to determine if soils of recently burned areas (representative of the natural fire-return interval) have different properties relative to soils in areas without recent fire. To assess this, recent low-intensity, lightning-caused, spot wildfire areas were located within fire-suppressed stands of ponderosa pine/Douglas-fir of the central, eastern Cascade Mountains of Washington State. Soil horizon depths were measured, and samples collected by major genetic horizons. Samples were analyzed for pH, C, N, C/N ratio, cation exchange capacity (CEC), base saturation (%BS), hydrophobicity and extractable P. Results show very little difference in soil properties between sites burned by low-severity fires and those areas left unburned. Such minimal changes, from these low-severity fires, in soil properties from fire suppression suggest there has also been little change in soil processes.

Description:
Soil compaction and organic matter removal are two common disturbances caused by forest management practices, such as harvesting and site preparation. In this study, we investigated the effects of severe soil compaction and whole tree harvesting plus forest floor removal (referred to as forest floor removal below, as compared with stem-only harvesting) on soil microbial biomass C (MBC) and N (MBN) and net N mineralization and nitrification rates in the forest floor and 0-10cm mineral soil between July 2002 and 2003 in a boreal forest long-term soil productivity (LTSP) site near Dawson Creek, BC, Canada. Soil compaction increased mineral soil bulk density by an average of 24%, reduced aeration porosity by as much as 50%, and lowered growing season soil temperature and moisture content. There was no interaction between soil compaction and forest floor removal on soil microbial properties and N transformation processes. Soil compaction reduced net nitrification rates in both the forest floor and mineral soil and reduced MBN in the mineral soil at several sampling dates and reduced available N content in both the forest floor and mineral soil in the July 2002 sampling. Forest floor removal tended to decrease MBC and MBN, most likely attributable to the reduced substrate availability for microbial metabolism, but tended to increase net N mineralization and nitrification rates, possibly as a result of elevated soil temperature. While short-term negative effects of soil compaction on MBN and available N were found, no negative impact of forest floor removal on N transformation rates was obvious. This LTSP experiment will continue to monitor the long-term effects of both soil compaction and organic matter removal on N cycling processes and stand productivity.

Description:
Although boreal herb-rich forests are important ecosystems for maintaining biological diversity in Fennoscandia, their ecology, flora and ecological gradients are still poorly known and their classification remains somewhat unclear. The aim here was to explore quantitatively which are the most important environmental factors related to distribution patterns in the herb-rich forest vegetation. Altogether 101 herb-rich forest stands in the Koli area, eastern Finland, were studied. In order to find out whether vascular plants (n=165) and bryophytes (n=100) reflect different environmental factors, they were subjected separately to Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA). The results indicated that the most important environmental factor was site moisture, while others were soil acidity, the intensity of water flow, stoniness, land use history and exposure. Bryophyte distribution correlated better with N, Ca and soil moisture than did the distribution of vascular plants, while vascular plants were more closely reflected earlier land use, altitude and Mg. Differences between eight 'A priori' herb-rich forest site types were studied by non-parametric test. The herb-rich forests studied here can be classified in terms of moisture into: (1) sub-dry and mesic, (2) mesic-moist and (3) moist and wet sites. Sites also formed clear groups after moisture gradient, location and land use history or exposure. Traditional herb-rich forest site types did not form clear groups after environmental gradients. Deciduous stands, hemerophilous species and podsol and peat mull soils are common in the herb-rich forest studied as a result of long-term human impacts, e.g. slash-and-burn cultivation and intensive forestry.

Book Description
Simply, and with great humanity,
The Eradication of Smallpox tells the story of smallpox - it's origins, the horror of the disease, and the millions of people killed or disfigured by it. During the 18th and 19th centuries, it is estimated that one out of every ten people died from the disease; some say one out of every seven. Smallpox attacked very young children in particular.
The story progresses with the practice of variolation, the life of Edward Jenner who first proposed 'vaccination' with cow pox vaccine (little James Phipps was the first person ever vaccinated in this way), the years of debate about the efficacy of this novel method, and the later worldwide initiatives to rid the planet of this horrific disease. In 1979, the story culminates in the only total eradication of an infectious disease that mankind has ever accomplished. This year celebrates the 20th anniversary of this momentous achievement.
In the intervening years, debate has raged about what we should do with the remaining smallpox viral stocks. Do we destroy them, so they can't fall into the hands of bioterrorists, or do we maintain them, in case they may be of use in some unexpected way, for therapeutic purposes? These questions are thoroughly discussed in the book.
Key Features
* Covers the background, history and origin of smallpox, and brings the story up to the present day
* Gives full and interesting details of Jenner's life, and tells how this humble country doctor brought about a revolution in vaccination
* Includes many quotes from historical figures
* Features 120 high quality photographs, many originating from unique historical plates in the author's private collection

* Provides new views on the eradication and destruction of smallpox
Customer Reviews:
Eradication of Smallpox.......2000-12-18
More a biography and canonization of Edward Jenner than a comprehensive examination of the eradication of smallpox, _The Eradication of Smallpox; Edward Jenner and The First and Only Eradication of a Human Infectious Disease_ is, nevertheless, a useful text and a pleasant read.
While Herve Bazin does apply necessary attention to the various factors that lent themselves to the development of a smallpox vaccine and the eventual elimination of the disease from humanity, the book places heavy emphasis on the contribution of Edward Jenner to the process. There can be no doubt that Jenner's contribution was significant and should in no way be dismissed. In this regard, _The Eradication of Smallpox_ is a thorough examination of his life and influence. The work by other's to achieve the only instance of the complete eradication of a human infectious disease could, however, have been treated more fully.
_The Eradication of Smallpox_ is worth picking up if only for its discussion of Jenner's life, an important component of the history of smallpox. A more complete study of smallpox, however, would require further reading.

A book which goes beyond the x and o's to provide the coach with the correct skills and attitudes necessary to compete at a high level.
Customer Reviews:
As close to a How-To Guide as you're going to get............2002-06-11
This book is pretty close to being a how to guide. Coach Gozansky has thought of just about everything that is relevant to running a good volleyball program. This is not to say that you need to follow the book word for word, but she has set out a lot of information on issues that most people would not have thought of when they start coaching.
The technical section of the skills and strategy are pretty reasonable. But since I am a believer in the nuances of the game, I can't abide by learning the game by the book. You really have to be a observer and a student of the game in order to gain the necessary nuances in order to be a good game coach. So I don't believe that any book on skill is ever adequate. However, everything else mentioned in this book is very good. This is a great reference book for someone who want to build a program, whether it is in the colleges or in high school. The information set forth are pragmatic and reasonable, the presentation clear and concise.
I would recommend this highly to any coach, including club coaches.

Instructor's Manual for Beebe and Masterson Communicating in Small Groups
Book Description
"Art does not produce the visible but makes visible," wrote Paul Klee. This work examines and reinterprets this important principle-- writing does not reproduce speech, it makes it visible-- through an in-depth history of writing across the globe, from ancient civilization to the modern day.
A History of Writing analyzes the role of the image in writing from three perspectives:
* Part one is devoted to the oldest, non-alphabetic methods of writing, and to the ingenious developments devised by civilizations that chose to adapt them to their language and culture: from the ancient development of cuneiform script in southern Mesopotamia, to the intricate ideographic scripts of China and Japan, or the still-to-be-deciphered rongo-rongo script of Easter Island.
* Part two focuses on the history and dissemination of alphabets, examining the origins of the Western semitic alphabet and its "sister" Arabic alphabet script, through to the lesser-known scripts of the Caucasus or of sub-Saharan Africa.
* Part three, finally, examines the reincorporation of imagery into the Western alphabet, looking at various hand-written and printed forms, from the sumptuous illuminations of the Book of Kells to the rise of printing and of typographic forms in modern times, leading to questions over how different writing systems are now adapting in a world that is increasingly dominated by computer technology.
In total, fifty-eight lavishly illustrated chapters present detailed yet accessible commentaries from a team of leading specialists in the study of writing. Together they explain and clarify the birth, evolution, and dissemination of over thirty key scripts and alphabets and their numerous derivatives. The breadth and scope of material covered, along with the detailed sources of documentation provided, make A History of Writing an essential and exciting new contribution to existing scholarship on this fascinating subject.
