Solid Introduction to Economic Indicators, although dated.......2006-05-18

This book is an easy read and it is a great introduction to economic indicators. Unfortunately, it is out of date. It gives a description of what each indicator actually measures, who produces the indicator, and why it is important to the stock, bond, and currency markets.

It is a very quick read (less than a day) and can be used to refresh one's memory on the basic econ indicators.

It also includes an in-depth discussion of how the Fed actually regulates the money supply. This is one of the better introductions to the Fed's operations that I have read.

I recommend quickly reading this book whenever you need a refresher course on the very basics of what to look for in economic indicators, especially with respect to how they affect the markets.

A Great And Easy Reference Guide.......2000-05-13

I first purchased this book about 10 years ago and have done so about once a year since then. It is of great help for those just fresh from the university and to the seasoned financial guru. When data has been made public from the FED, this book helps one to diagnose and better comprehend those economic figures.

A STUNNING BOOK.......2000-07-03

As one of the critics says; this i s indeed a pageturner... However, there are numerous faults facts in this book. Among them includes that the film IT`S A PLEASURE was a Fox film. Wrong, it was produced by International and released by RKO. Several critical comments on her films are stolen from among others Leslie Halliwell, a notable filmcritic and the ONLY bible for moviebuffs until internet movie database came along. Stories of Sonja and Tyrone are also way over the top; the talk they had in the dressingroom - how did Leif Henie and Raymond Strait get hold of t h a t? Leif was still in Norway at the time. However. There are several items that distinguish this biography; the stories by Sonja`s secretary Dorothy Stevens in particular... It is true that in creating the ice-skating star Sonja Henie, her father created a monster. But in the long run Sonja suffered from it. She was never taught to be a normal person. And indeed: She gave Norway a place in the sun and donated with her third husband Niels Onstad the Henie-Onstad ArtGallery near Oslo. U should visit it if u came to Norway. All of Sonja`s medals and trophies are in a well-guarded room and photos etc from her films are displayed in a huge basement. It must never be forgotten that she gave our nation a great deal - indeed giving the community of Bærum a home for retired people. U WILL see this reading this book that she was a trouper - a woman who was taught to fight and be competetive. And everything she tried her hands on - became lucrative.

Hell on Ice.......1999-10-30

I know and have known quite a people who worked with Sonja or were as close a friend as she would permit and this book seems to confirm all that I've heard over the last 40 years. I met Sonja in 1963 in Pittsburgh at the opening of the Pittsburgh Arena. Despite all her shortcomings as a person, there was something about her that fascinates me as a skater and as a person. Anyone interested in skating should read this book.

For those who loved to watch Sonja Heine, this book is a must, showing her amazing rise to fame, volatile temperment and unbelievable perserverance. You won't be able to put it down from start to finish.

BEWARE if you want to listen to the audio on your ipod.......2007-09-14

This is a good quality product that is a little behind the times. When you import the CD's to your itunes account, the descriptions and numbering are not consistent from CD to CD. For example on Disc 1, the tracks are numbered 0101, 0102, etc., which is great. However, on Disc 7 they are just numbered "Track 1" w/no indication which disc, nor is the "author" or "title" noted in the applicable columns. This makes it VERY hard to find the disc, much less the track you want to listen to for some discs. As I said, the instructional quality is superb, but you would think that with the new edition they could get a little more with the tech program! If you want to physically use the CD's in a CD player, this issue would not apply, but had I known how antiquated the uplink would be, I would not have bought it.

Good, but not for total beginners.......2007-09-03

This is just the part of the FSI (Foreign Service Institute) program, repackaged under the Barrons name. This program is probably best after some exposure to the French language - from Pimsleur or Michel Thomas for example. The audio quality isn't the best, since the tapes were originally recorded in the 60's, but I don't see this as a problem, since you'll have to get used to real prople who do not always speak clearly. I wouldn't pay much for this though, since the whole course is in the public domain and can be found for free (legally) on the web.

Definetly teaches something.......2006-08-22

I finished this book in just three weeks, but I remember every word that was taught in the course. I feel right now that the words I learned will never leave my mind.

Just about three weeks ago, before using this book, I knew nearly no french (just "bonjour", "merci", and "bon voyage"), not did I know how to pronounce the language. After finishing the book however, I could say many basic sentences, more than most of my classmates could after taking 2 years of french.

Here are some good things about the set:

1. There are many drills that help you know the topic very well. They can be boring, but the payoff is great.

2. The speakers talk at normal conversation speed. This prepares you well for situations you might encounter in a french-speaking country. Also, it forces you to throughly know what is being taught since only then can you have enough time to respond to the drills. (Beginners may find it hard to adapt, but they should improve quickly).

I did not like the following:

1. No pronunciation is taught (at least not in my book). They assume you know it already. This was the biggest obstacle when I started. If you are a beginner, buy another elementary course (or get one from your library) or search online for some pronunciation lessons, because they will help you immensely.

2. The speakers can be hard to understand. Combined with talking fast, beginners may be lost. I believe this is a very old recording, and some parts are unclear. Also, to change everything to the new euro currency, some other woman talks quickly to replace these instances. I first thought the tape was screwed up, but then figured out the reason.

3. Very little grammar is taught, and many times, the dialogues add in sentences that would not make much sense without learning the grammar (for example, the past tense appears sometimes, and so does direct/indirect object pronouns that often cause english-speakers huge problems).

Overall, this course is only for really serious students (like mentioned in the book anyway) that really want to be fluent. If you are an absolute beginner, get a little bit of french background (pronunciation, basic phrases perhaps), and the course will be just as effective. Once you get the hang of this course's style, you'll find your french skills flying.

Part one of the best course for learning French.......2005-11-29

The FSI (original name) language courses are very good ways of learning another language. Instead of trying to be all fancy, this course simply presents French in a simple way that really helps you learn. If you complete all four levels of this course you can expect to have a very high speaking ability.

The learning method may be new to some people. There's a lot of audio so vocal practice is very thorough. It's basically up to you to decide when you want to move to the next lesson. In a sense you "over-learn" material, however this only helps you to learn things better.

For beginners I recommend doing Michel Thomas's French Course first. A lot of the information in that prepares you to use Mastering French.

This course if more for the serious learner. If you are just planing to learn basic knowledge of the language to get by, I recommend something like Pimsleur. If you really want to be proficient in the language then this course is for you.

Economic Freedom = The Key to Development?.......2001-01-17

Economic freedom may or may not be the way to spiritual or political happiness, but it certainly seems that it's one of the keys to economic development. Although it's difficult to prove once and for all precisely what economic environments are best for countries, this series attempts to get at the keys. I also believe that if they were to change their opinions on a measure or two, they would have no hesitancy to revise or amend their criteria. Whatever flaw their analyses have, it is a monumental effort they put together each year, and at the very least it's a benchmark for people to debate about. There's information in here that you can't get easily from anywhere else at this price...

Superb resource.......2000-06-24

We use the resource as a reference for business conditions and navigating the often difficult issues of world business. Its bibliographic resources are excellent, especially for smaller countries for which there are few published data. We have used it for many years, and find it thoughtful, thought-provoking, and insightful.

TERRIBLE!.......2000-06-08

It is a huge debate in Sociology and Political science: does democratization cause economic growth or economic growth democratization. But the authors seem careless: if there is a correlation between the two, it means that economic freedom and democratization must cause economic growth. Why? I don't know! Do you? And that is the first thing our students learn in Methodology courses: correlation does no mean causality at all!

The Index of Economic Freedom is an heroic piece of work, both statistically and in terms of the amount of research it takes to bring it all together. I teach International Business at a university and require that students consult the IEF for papers on individual countries in which U.S. businesses might wish to invest. Each country is evaluated by a number (1-5) on 10 dimensions: trade, taxation, government, monetary policy, foreign investment, banking, wages and prices, property rights, regulation, and black market. The text on each country also notes whether the numbers have changed over the last years, and explains why. Over the years, Singapore and Hong Kong have typically been rated the most economically free countries, while Cuba and North Korea have been the most repressed.

The connection between economic freedom and rising standards of living becomes clear to students as never before. They start to read only on their assigned country and then go on to compare other countries, just because they're fascinated! I wish I could find more works of this caliber.
