3 out of 5 stars Helpful resource that could be improved.......2007-05-14

The best thing about The Complete Games Trainers Play is its sheer size. Actually, it isn't nearly as big as some reviews imply. It is really around 1000 pages, not 2000+. And for some reason, a significant percentage of those pages are left blank. But even with that caveat, this is still a sizable resource.

If you are willing to devote 30+ minutes to finding an activity, you are sure to find one (or five) that are ideal for your training event. The fact that individual "games" can be removed from the ring binder is also helpful. This allows you to use the activities without carrying the whole book around, and to easily photocopy sheets for individual participants as some activities require.

However, there are some significant downsides. There is no real way to find appropriate activities without flipping through virtually the entire book. A large number of the activities aren't very good. And, most of the book is in a strange "typewriter" typeface that makes it look like it came from 1972. (Oddly, there are some pages which are randomly sprinkled through the book that use a different, more recent-looking typeface.)

To really upgrade its usefulness, Games . . . would benefit from taking a leap into the computer age. In other words, along with the printed book, a computer CD should be included. This could feature a good, searchable index, which is now lacking. It would also make it possible to print out games, and modify handouts on the computer to your organization's needs.

I've never bought any other resources like this, so I can't say if this is better or worse than others. I can say that in spite of the steep price and the drawbacks, I'm definitely glad I purchased it. It was very useful to me, and will be again in the future. However, there are a few simple steps the authors and publishers could take to greatly improve it.

This is a great tool of Trainers. Keeping your trainees engaged throughout the training is always a challenge. This tool give creative ways to assess retention of information. The games are great and the administrative forms and suggestions are wonderful.

4 out of 5 stars Lots of games here.......2004-12-08

People love playing games a lot more than listening to lectures; this is indisputable. I didn't like all of the games listed here, but so what. Several I found helpful and intend to use.

2 out of 5 stars Not Impressed.......2003-09-30

Although there is a lot of information packed into this book, I was very unimpressed with the layout and visual design. It looks like it was typed up in 1970. The graphics are ancient and the layout is just one big binder with no cross-referencing or indexing available. To find a useful game, you have to sift through hundreds of pages. It really is a shame, as there are some clever games here to loosen up an audience.
Frankly for this price, I expected something a bit flashier and filled with reproducibles that I would want to copy and hand out. The way it looks now, and with it's unwieldy format, it's going to sit on my shelf.
If I hadn't spilled water on it, I would have sent it back for a refund.

4 out of 5 stars The Complete Games Trainers Play.......2000-05-23

This book was helpful in planning an in-house managment training session. The book is divided into sections making it easy to locate games targeted at specific areas. The book is actually a 3" 3 ring binder. It is a large book, however, it does contain a wealth of information.

Book Description

The manager of the future needs to understand that there is a relationship between advances in technology and the collapse of product life cycles. As the speed of innovation increases, there is more demand for new products and for old products to be improved. Only companies that develop the flexibility to rapidly respond to these new demands will survive into the new millennium. The manager of the future knows that the key to achieving this rapid flexibility is willingness to change and an understanding of the two Principles of Process Management.

There are two directions for change; a change can be deterioration or improvement. The First Principle of Process Management states that "a fundamental understanding of BOTH the product and the process is essential to improvement. Both the product and process must be understood individually and separately. The underlying component for improving the product is the process." Many people are tempted to monitor and study the product only, since the product is the "goal" and end result. However, a knowledge base that contains only data about end products is extremely limiting, and ultimately fatal. When a change occurs, the product characteristics will change. Without process knowledge, the reason for the change is unknown. If the change has been deterioration, not understanding the reason for the change is terrible. If the change has yielded improvement, not understanding the reason for the change is catastrophic, because the improvements will not be consistently replicable. In "Become the Manager of the Future," author James Abbott introduces the Walkabout(tm) Dependency Diagram which is the best tool available for learning, studying, and monitoring product AND process characteristics or "metrics."

The Second Principle of Process Management is the Division of Labor. "Division of Labor is the framework for all aspects of decision-making. It must be clearly understood to separate the strategic and tactical decisions. Operations makes the tactical decisions of running the facility. Management makes the strategic decisions of assessing the facility's suitability for the job." Only by working as two parts of the same team can both of these groups effectively run a facility. Operations must monitor the process and product and alert management when there has been a change. Management must assess the change to determine whether it has been improvement or deterioration, and decide whether to keep the change and the changed product, or to rework the process to return the product to its original state.

The understanding and implementation of these two business principles is the foundation for any successful improvement plan. Since these are principles and not "steps" or "rules", they can be employed in any manufacturing or service industry that involves any sort of continuous process. The concepts taught in Become the Manager of the Future will be of interest and use to: plant managers who want to better understand their role within their organization; small business owners who cannot afford to hire a contractor or consultant to oversee the implementation of an improvement project; new graduates who want a head start understanding the principles of successful process management; or anyone who is dedicated to making decisions based on sound, fact-based data.

James Abbott describes the two Principles of Process Management, their implementation, and implications using his inimitable "down home" southern style. Using many examples from his years in industry and as a consultant, Mr. Abbott frames his lessons in a business context. His conversational style is a welcome relief from more conventional, jargon laden business books. A true commitment to change and improvement, coupled with the principles introduced in Become the Manager of the Future, has led some companies to increase efficiency by one hundred percent in under two months, and to cut scrap on a single machine by forty percent in one day. Together with Practical Understanding of Capability by Implementing Statistical Process Control, an all-phase improvement project implementation is possible -- and its success guaranteed.

4 out of 5 stars A down-to-earth look at process improvement.......2000-05-03

The book was nice break from the esoteric and technical process improvement books that seem to clutter the shelves. A more real world book that focused on a few simple concepts and applied them to complex problems; more product related than service related.

I saw this book reviewed in Nature magazine. It had a rave review there, so I bought a copy. I wasn't dissapointed, this is a reprint of all the seminal papers on the subject of MEP (Maximum Entropy Production). It is a modern version of Schroedinger's famous book - "What is Life".

My only wish is that the book could be a little MORE mathematically complete.

    Book Description

In A Certain Curve of Horn, veteran journalist John Frederick Walker tells the story of one of the most revered and endangered of the regal beasts of Africa: the giant sable antelope of Angola, a majestic, coal-black quadruped with breathtaking curved horns more than five feet long. It is an enthralling and tragic tale of exploration and adventure, politics and war, the brutal realities of life in Africa today, and the bitter choices of conflicting conservation strategies. A Certain Curve of Horn traces the sable's emergence as a highly sought-after natural history prize before the First World War, and follows its struggle to survive in a war zone fought over by the troops of half a dozen nations and its transformation into a political symbol and conservation icon. As he follows the trail of this mysterious animal, Walker interweaves the stories of the adventurers, scientists, and warriors who have come under the thrall of the beast, and how their actions would shape the fate of the giant sable antelope and the history of the war-torn nation that is its only home. A new epilogue by the author and pages of illustrations are included.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Post Colonial History.......2005-10-15

This book is mainly about the giant sable. But even more interesting are the descriptions of Angola, the history of the country during Portugese rule and the descent into civil war. I love it.

2 out of 5 stars thorough but boring account.......2005-07-13

a very tedious, exhaustive treatise of african colonialism, politics, war, and oh, did i mention, the search for the giant sable antelope. having had interest in this magnificent, but rare species, i had picked the book up at the local library hoping it would divulge its secrets and whereabouts. instead, over 80% of the book deals with the aforementioned topics and the author tries hard to interlace this history with the sable, unsuccessfully i might add. there is so much detail and tedium that if i wanted a historical book i would have bought one. he goes on to great lenghts the describe written and biographical accounts of explorers and hunters that i could barely keep my heavy lids open to continue reading. bottom line: best left for the armchair historian rather than naturalist.

    4 out of 5 stars Wildlife & War.......2003-03-06

Casting the giant sable antelope as a modern day unicorn, John Frederick Walker's Certain Curvature of Horn is at once a tale of mystery, wildlife biology, and potboiling politics. Anyone with an interest in Africa's megafauna will enjoy this carefully researched saga of the sable's precarious existence through Angola's long civil war. The first part of the book is not for the squeamish as one antelope after another is felled by trophy hunters and museum collectors. Walker's obvious reverence for the iconic beasts makes each shot and each death feel like a personal loss. But it is the mano a mano of Angola's warring leaders - Eduardo dos Santos and Jonas Savimbi - in the book's second half that causes the most discomfiture as the conservation world agonizes over the sables' fate on battlefields that have bled for over 30 years. The question of the sable's survival among so much human bloodshed is the book's big unanswered question. Walker tries mightily to get a flesh and blood glimpse of the endangered animal, making numerous trips to Angola and finally, a furtive dash into the war zone itself. Not to give away too much, his disappointment is tempered by what seems like the end to Angola's civil war and the beginnings of new animal sanctuaries where decimated wildlife, like the giant sable, can begin anew. Walker manages to make you care for a magnificent animal that like the country it symbolizes, is a tough survivor.

        Book Description

Aikido, while uniquely beautiful among the martial arts, is also deceptively powerful, effective, and efficient. Dedicated practitioners know that advanced training means not only striving to master techniques, but also developing a deeper understanding of the history, philosophy and concepts at the core of this martial art.

In Advanced Aikido, Phong Thong Dang and Lynn Seiser present an in-depth look at the complete art of Aikido—from the underlying theories that drive the techniques and strategies to advice on mastering the throws and locks fundamental to the art. With over 400 illustrations and detailed instructions from one of the leading teachers in the field, even the most experienced practitioners can benefit from the lessons in this book.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars This book is a lot of bang for the buck..........2007-02-12

Like their earlier book collaboration, the authors present a no-nonsense, balanced effort, covering many subjects and answering many questions that may commonly be asked by students with 3-8 years of Aikido training. How to maximize practice time, how to get the most from seminars, things to think about if you are considering opening a school... all are addressed here. There is a good amount of technical instruction as well, but the dojo is the best place to learn these things. An excellent effort, and well worth the investment.

From the supplier: Western executives should study the philosophy and practice of the hand-to-hand martial art known as 'aikido' to better understand the defensive marketing strategies of the Japanese. Aikido requires leading control, blending with an attack, non-resistance, and offering a tantalizing target. In business parlance, the principle of leading control is applied by luring competitors to follow a company's lead in R&D by highlighting its own technology. A company can also blend with a competitor's attack by transforming itself to align with the movement of its competitor and eventually win the target market. Non-resistance can be practiced in business by refusing to take any direct action, which only results in an equally direct reaction. This is evident when head-to-head competition is absent. Western companies should be aware of these aikido-style marketing strategies to better compete against the Japanese.

            Product Description

Entirely composed in Latin, Part I, Familia Romana, provides an excellent introduction to Latin, including the essentials of Latin grammar and a basic vocabulary of over 1500 words. The thirty-five chapters describe the life of a Roman family in the 2nd century A.D., and culminate in readings from classical poets and Donatus’s Ars Grammatica, the standard Latin school text for a millenium. Each chapter is divided into two or three lectiones (lessons) of a couple pages each followed by a grammar section, Grammatica Latina, and three exercises or Pensa. Hans Ørberg’s impeccable latinity, humorous stories, and the Peer Lauritzen illustrations make this work a classic. The book includes a table of inflections, a Roman calendar, and a word index, Index vocabulorum.

5 out of 5 stars An outstanding text for actually learning Latin.......2007-03-08

Oerberg's Lingua Latina is an amazing accomplishment. It will not be received well by everyone, but this is not owing to any deficiency in the text. Unfortunately, we live in a time when the study of Latin has been relegated to the grammarians---who would rather concoct a rule for the language than understand it *as* a language.

We also live in a time when Latin in general is only very poorly understood, even by those who are bold enough to teach it. Catch the average university Latinist off guard with any real question about Latin, and you'll learn quickly how bad it really is. As they have been taught, so they are producing: students who can only recite a conjugation paradigm but cannot "ask where the bathroom is". Texts like Wheelock contribute horribly to this problem.

Lingua Latina offers something different. It is for those who want to actually learn Latin for what it is, not a tricky puzzle but a language which can be understood. Without exaggeration, when you have finished Lingua Latina you will have read many times more Latin than by finishing Wheelock's. You probably won't be so quick to respond when someone asks you, "so what is a passive periphrastic?" But you also won't be subvocalizing in English when reading simple, real Latin authors.

Trust me, as a recovering student-of-Wheelock, this book will help you actually understand *Latin*. So cast off your chains of grammar and start learning the language. Stop learning *about* Latin and start understanding it.

5 out of 5 stars Lingua Latina: Pars I: Familia Romana.......2007-01-11

I love this book! There is no English and we have to figure it all out - and at the same time it is written so that it is easy to figure out! The way it is written makes learning and reviewing vocabulary and grammar fun and "easy" (you still need to study!) It does help to have an idea the basics of Latin vocabulary.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect way to learn Latin!.......2006-11-13

For those studying independently or in a dedicated group, this book aims to make you fluent in Latin, in reading it at least, but also it helps for those wishing to speak it better. It's a complete course in the language and works great as review. I'm not sure I'd recommend it as the _only_ text for complete beginners, especially if those beginners have never studied a second language before, but it would work fine in conjunction with another text such as Wheelock's.

            Product Description

Entirely composed in Latin, Part I, Familia Romana, provides an excellent introduction to Latin, including the essentials of Latin grammar and a basic vocabulary of over 1500 words. The thirty-five chapters describe the life of a Roman family in the 2nd century A.D., and culminate in readings from classical poets and Donatus’s Ars Grammatica, the standard Latin school text for a millennium.

5 out of 5 stars Best Latin Primer.......2007-08-24

Of the ten to fifteen series of Latin Primers I've looked at, this is the best. The next best is probably Oxford and Cambridge. The problem with Henle and Wheelock is that although one can thoroughly understand grammar, one does not acquire the idiom. I mean idiom as Cardinal Newman in Elementary Education (in Idea of University) describes it. Oerberg best gives you a knack for "how the Latin sentence is thought" or put together (not merely idiomatic expression). It is harder to teach, but much more enjoyable. My students love learning. It also has rave reviews from teachers at the publishers' forum for Oerberg. There is also a brand new companion book that is supplement to the grammar.

It is a "natural" approach. Everything is in Latin. My students learn to speak the Latin in 2 months of 6th grade, and learn about 4 times the vocabulary without ever using a dictionary (and I only give them a few difficult words, in particular some prepositions and conjunctions).

It is difficult on your own I imagine, but there are additional resources. It's by far the best approach, the closest to actually acquiring the language by immersion. Suitable for adults and used in colleges. (Oerberg has a very subtle and also not so subtle humor, making it suitable for all ages.)I studied Latin formally for ten years and never acquired a knack for the idiom. Teaching from Oerberg has actually improved my Latin. It is, I think, an answer to Dorothy Sayers who said her biggest complaint was that after 20 years of study, she never really acquired Latin -- she started when seven.

Vive, Hans! He's done a great service for Latin pedagogy. It's really a brilliant little work as are the best Latin text books -- the difference is, this works. Latin is the toughest elementary "subject" there is -- I've taught almost all of them including AP Calc. It's also the most beneficial. I'm grateful to the Oerberg for having made it a little easier.

FINALLY, if I haven't yet convinced you, I suggest that you get it as a supplemental reader. Just read it in the Latin and try not to translate. Read and reread until you master the first book. It will help all future Latin reading. (BTW the second book is helpful too, and Hans is attempting to make an intro. to the Aeneid.)

5 out of 5 stars Pretty Good! .......2007-05-04

I take latin, and this is the book we use. I think it is VERY well writen, (all in latin) and very easy to use. I would, though not recomend it as a begining latin book, but as a second year latin course. The many pictures make it fun, and it is exciting to read about the roman family; Mother, Aemilia, Father, Julius, and the three children, Marcus, Quintus and Juila, (who is my favorite!) The story's are progressive, starting with simple introductions to the geography of Italy, then meeting the family, then moving on the more complicated things like runaway slaves. All in all, this is a very well written textbook!

            Book Description

Shabkar Tsogdruk Rangdröl (1781-1851) was a Tibetan yogi who spent many years in solitary meditation—after which he devoted the rest of his life to teaching, traveling throughout the Tibet region, gaining renown for the powerful teachings he freely gave to everyone he encountered. His autobiography, from which these poems are taken, is a Tibetan classic. Jigme Doushe has given Shabkar's songs a fresh and original calligraphic interpretation, mixing traditional versions of Tibetan forms with contemporary innovations. Rhythmic, elegant, and rich with Buddhist symbolism, his calligraphy is an homage to the splendor of a disappearing culture. Calligraphy (from the Greek for "beautiful writing") is an art where word and image meet, where the artist strives to give visual expression to the meaning of words in a way that transcends the text while remaining completely faithful to it. It is a discipline that has been invested with spiritual significance wherever it has arisen—and it has arisen throughout the world in every age, in virtually every language, culture, and religion. The Shambhala Calligraphy series is a collection of books devoted to contemporary expressions of this "art of the word," featuring contemporary calligraphers' striking new interpretations of texts that have been traditional subjects for calligraphic interpretation. Whether in Arabic, Greek, Hebrew, Latin, or Chinese pictographs, the characters, words, and sentences are brought to life anew here in a choreography of mind, hand, and heart by which letter and spirit fuse in a single stroke.

            5 out of 5 stars Absolutely beautiful.......2005-05-29

This is a lovely slim volume with few words, but very thoughtful ones. The calligraphy is gorgeous and done in the many styles of Tibetan scripts, which are explained in the final portion of the book. I have found few books that give examples of the various scripts, and this one gives poems too!

            4 out of 5 stars Pretty rainbows.......2005-02-13

Calligraphy and poetry are not things that are automatically stuck together. But exquisite, brief poems and colorful calligraphy are inextricably entwined in "Rainbows Appear: Tibetan Poems of Shabkar." It's not quite a spiritual experience, but it's the next best thing.

The poetry is taken from the autobiography of Shabkar Tsogdruk Rangdroi, a Buddhist mystic who taught and traveled across Tibet. His poetry is brief and hard-hitting, with powerful, simple sentiments: "Incense, flowers and lamps are not/the best offerings to the Buddha/the most beautiful gift to the Buddha/is good done for beings." Okay, you don't have to be a Buddhist to appreciate the quiet instruction in this verse.

Another striking thing about Shabkar's poetry is not just that it can be counted as spiritual instruction, but also that it contains beautiful metaphors, mostly from nature. In one verse, he compares himself to the sun, "resplendent with light," and reflects that the sky will remain while the sun will not.

What about the calligraphy? Jigme Doushe has lovely calligraphic skills, from what I can tell. And he makes his work come alive with bright colors mixed in with neutral tones -- one is simply fawn-colored with dark red and pale yellow, while another is electric blue and orange. Most tend toward neutrals, but are splashed with color.

The two art forms complement each other, with the colorful calligraphy boosting the simple verses. And Doushe provides an afterword which sets the poetry, calligraphy and religion in their historical context, as well as giving some insights into his own artwork.

It's strangely soothing to read Shabkar's peaceful poetry, while looking at Doushe's striking calligraphy. A beautiful little collection.
