    Book Description

This extraordinary text offers a proven combination of scholarship from an insightful economist and a renowned American historian. It recounts the development of capitalism and the age of machines through the voices of business leaders, working people, inventors, and an unusual cast of presidents, generals, and patriots. Unlike other books in the field of economic history, this text tells a story. While not ignoring statistics and percentages, this narrative focuses on the fact that America's economic transformation is an extraordinary drama--a drama that continues today.

This is the best general history of the American economy that I have seen. I purchased it to get material for my college lectures and it is worth the money. Heilbruner and Singer summarize every development in economic life while explaining why these changes have occured. It is an exceptionally well-written book and even my history hating friend could not put it down.

        Book Description

This book investigates a particular group, called Young America, within the U.S. Democratic Party during the 1840s and 1850s. It argues that members of this group changed what it meant to be a Democrat. They moved the party toward new economic thinking, greater engagement with the world, a more active reform attitude, and a new view of the U.S. Constitution, thus playing a role in the coming of the American Civil War. This is the first full-blown examination of Young America’s impact in the realm of politics, as opposed to merely literature and culture.

5 out of 5 stars Great Dino Story.......2007-05-09

This is a great read - a nicely crafted story of a nearly forgotten time and series of events that led to some great discoveries! I like the way the story unfolds, the way the narrative reveals the challenges and intrigue surrounding this African dinosaur adventure. But I especially appreciated the huge amount of facts, details, and explanations which must have been the result of significant research by the author into this subject. Nice book; great dino story!

5 out of 5 stars African Dinosaurs Unearthed.......2003-07-06

This work of original research is not your "run of the mill" dinosaur book. It makes extensive use of European archival sources to seamlessly weave both history and palaeontology together to tell the story of Tendaguru. It is detailed, thorough and challenging! The photos, many seen for the first time, are awesome.

              Book Description

Our knowledge of the origin and early evolution of birds has exploded in the past ten to fifteen years. In the 1990s alone, scientists became aware of approximately three times more species of early birds than were previously known, marking the first 85 million years of avian development as a period of remarkable species diversity. Assembling work by an international group of renowned scientists, Mesozoic Birds: Above the Heads of Dinosaurs is the most authoritative and up-to-date source on early avian evolution currently available. This unique resource provides a comprehensive examination of the known fossil record and is also an unparalleled guide to the fast-paced developments in current research.
Mesozoic Birds: Above the Heads of Dinosaurs covers a wide range of topics, including discussions of avian origins, the fossil record of feathers and footprints, bone histology, and locomotor evolution. Controversial taxa such as Protoavis, Caudipteryx, and Mononykus receive special treatment. But the heart of the volume presents the anatomy, relationships, and paleobiology of the undisputed Mesozoic aviary. Some of the book's most exciting features are the new definitive descriptions and illustrations of taxa that previously have received only brief notice, such as the alvarezsaurid Shuvuuia; the enantiornithines Sinornis; Eoalulavis, Vorona, and Patagopteryx; and the hesperornithiform Enaliornis.
The origin of birds and their relationship to dinosaurs continue to be hotly debated among paleontologists, ornithologists, and evolutionary biologists. This cutting-edge reference will become an essential resource for those interested in this debate and in the many other fascinating topics relating to the evolution of the earliest known birds.

5 out of 5 stars Mesozoic Birds: Above the Heads of Dinosaurs.......2002-12-21

Mesozoic Birds: Above the Heads of Dinosaurs edited by Luis M. Chiappe and Lawrence M. Witmer is an astounding book on the evolution of birds. In the 1980's and 1990's there have been fossil discoveries that can link the development of birds for eighty-five million years.

This book is written by thirty-one authors as they have written abstracts on some very interesting finds and connections. This book is NOT a childrens book as the authors are writing for students and professionals in the field of paleontology. There is a lot of comparative anatomy and phylogenesis, morphology and systematics in this book. If your looking for the current information on the link with birds and the dinosaurs, this is the book that will convince you that they did exist together.

The contents of this book is divided into four parts, each with abstracts for chapters. These parts are as follows:

Part I: The Archosaurian Heritage of Birds

Part II: Taxa of Contriversial Status

Part III: The Mesozic Aviary: Anatomy and Systmatics

Part IV: Functional Morphology and Evolutions

The greatest percentage of the book is in part three where with all of the recent discoveries locks in the theory that birds were flying in the time of the dinosaurs. If your are into learning some interesting information on the origin of birds than this book is for you. If you were wondering about the connection between the dinosaurs and birds, again this is the book for you. This is a very techical book and is written for older readers looks for current theory along with knowledgeable erudition.

The writing is very technical, but it is easily readable and the information is priceless.

              Book Description

This path breaking volume provides further evidence that we are in the midst of a new golden age' of dinosaur paleontology. It presents important new research on the vertebrate life of the Mesozoic as reported by 45 of the leading workers in the field. Organized into sections on theropods, sauropods, ornithischians, dinosaurian fauna, paleopathologies, and ichnology, these original papers represent a broad cross section of current research. Studies of Charles Sternberg and dinosaurs in fiction conclude the book.

              Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Advanced articles on dinosaurs.......2007-05-31

Despite the deceptively simple title, this book only covers dinosaurs (although there is a mention of mammal tracks in the chapters on ichnology). Further, the 33 individual papers (except for the last one on Dinosaurs in Fiction) are for advanced students and professionals. It would behoove you to have already read A.S. Romer's Osteology of the Reptiles and The Vertebrate Body as well as E.H. Colbert's Evolution of the Vertebrates and Michael Benton's Vertebrate Paleontology and Evolution before embarking on this book.
Still, if you already have the equivalent of a good undergraduate grounding in the field of paleontology, you will find this book a fascinating read. Well worth the money as long as you know what you're getting.

5 out of 5 stars Mesozoic Vertebrate Life.......2002-11-22

Mesozoic Vertebrate Life Edited By Darren H. Tanke and Kenneth Carpenter with Michael W. Skrepnick as the art editor is a new research inspired by the paleontology of Philip J. Currie is an excellent book... a book for the advanced dinosaur enthusiast. This book goes into detail about Theropods, Sauropods, Ornithischians, Dinosaurian Faunas, Paleopathologies, Ichnology, and Dinosaurs and Human History.

This book has a whole host of contributors(46 to be exact). All of the men and women are tops in their respective fields, so this book is like reading a medical book with all of the resplendent medical terms. Ah, but doen't give up, there are some very excellent drawings that help explain what the author is talking about, so your not left in the dust choking on the dust. I've noticed that the best dinosaur book on detail are written in this style where a collaboration of many authors that are expert and on the cutting edge with break throughs are written this way.

I would say this, the fossil record is telling the finder something... the finder has to study what he has found and make a determination and conclusion as to what he has found. All of this takes education, trial and error, and luck. So, you have the best guesses written here... things may stay as they were presented or they may change with insight, only time will tell.

If you are more than just a casual dinosaur devotee, than this is the book for you. It is light on the early Mesozoic, but it makes up for it in the late Mesozoic. The book is mainly composed of North American Mesozoic, but there is representation in China, and South America included.

There are excellent references included with there abstracts. This s not a book for children, this is an advanced case study of the dinosaura of the Mesozoic time. Those wishing for a book that compares jaws and endocarnial anatomy will relish this book. There is even an abstract on "The Impact of Sedimentology on Vertebrate Track Studies" which I found fascinating. I didn't know they went to that much detail, in models of track formation show clearly that the layer upon which the foot descends retains the most information of the impactor. Stresses are distributed radially away from the impact site and decrease exponentially with distance.

If you want detail this book has it. There are seven sections as I mentioned above, and they are divided into 33 chapters. This took a while to read and digest the information. This would make an interesting additions to a home library.

5 out of 5 stars By "Mesozic Life" you mean "dinosaurs"..........2002-05-02

The title is misleading. If you're looking for information on pterosaurs, plesiosaurs, or Mesozoic crocs, this book probably isn't for you. However, if you want to get the skinny on Tyrannosaurus arm movement and what they were used for (yeah, amazing, eh?), new dinosaurs, and generally good information on dinosaurs, this is a good book to consider. Heavy on the second half of the Mesozoic, the book none the less manages to have a good variety of papers about various aspects of dinosaurian paleobiology, phylogeny, and behavior. A great volume.

              Book Description

This book is the first attempt to collate all the information known to date on the small vertebrates, e.g. mammals, crocodiles, turtles, lizards, frogs, salamanders, etc., and features contributions by experts with international reputations in their fields. There are chapters on the taxonomy and phylogeny of the key vertebrate groups followed by a section dealing with the most significant fossiliferous assemblages worldwide. The final section looks at how faunal turnover at this time is measured and examines the possibility of mass extinctions.

5 out of 5 stars In the Shadow of the Dinosaurs: Early Mesozoic Tetrapods.......2002-12-22

In the Shadow of the Dinosaurs: Early Mesozoic Tetrapods is edited by Nicholas C. Fraser and Hans-Dieter Sues is a collection of abstracts written by thirty-five authors all prominent in their respective fields as a result of a workshop held in Front Royal, Virginia.

These feature contributions by experts with international reputations in thier fields has chapters on Taxonomy and phylogeny, Faunal assemblages and Faunal change. This book is divided into three parts housing their respective chapters.

Phylogeny entails the taxonomy and phylogeny of the principle vertebrate groups ( amphibians, lepidosaurs, crocodylomorphs, and mammals). A persistent problem in the identification of basal taxa of well-known groups is their recognitions in practice. This volumes focuses on several groups of tetrapods that have become much better known in recent years; there have been considerable advances in our understanding of their relationships as a result of both more rigorous phylogenetic analyses and the discovery and examination of new fossil material.

Faunal assemblages dealing with the most significant early Mesozoic tetrapods assemblages woldwide. These chapters examing the different Triassic and Jurassic assemblages are not intended as exhaustive reviews of all early Mesozoic tetrapod-bearing localities. Rather, they reflect areas where the greatest advances have been made in recent years.

Faunal change is the final section, looks at how faunal turnover at that time is measured and examines the possibility of mass extinctions. The considerable abundance of bones of small tetrapods at many localities gives them a great potential advantage as biostrtigraphic indicators over larger forms. It is therefore of interest that the abundance and widespread distribution of sphenodontian lepidosaur in strata of Late Triassic and Jurassic age have been recognized in the past few years.

The early Mesozoic era was a critical period in the evolution of life on land, when most of today's major groups of terrestrial vertebrats (mammals, turtles, lizards, frogs, salamanders), arose and the dinosaurs and pterosaurs rose to prominence. This is NOT a children's book. This book is written for the serious study of comparative anatomy between these species.

If you are looking for a book on current thought and distribution of post dinosauria then this is your book as it explains with fascination at how todays clues bring yesterdays fauna to life.

3 out of 5 stars A book only for experts.......1999-10-16

This book seems interesting, but it is written for proffesional paleontologists and evolutionary biologists. The language is very difficult, and it has terms that a layman can't understand. If a reader isn't a proffesional paleontologist or evolutionary biologist, he propably shouldn't by this book.

              2 out of 5 stars A deceptively populist title...for a very small audience........1999-05-04

In the Shadow of the Dinosaurs (Early Mesozoic Tetrapods) is a collection of research papers presented at workshop for paleontologists and evolutionary biologists. For scientists who were unable to attend the seminar this collection of very specific papers might be valuable. ( Titles such as "A new Bathonian microvertebrate locality in the English Midlands" or "Biotic and climatic changes in the Carnian of Europe and adjacent areas" are examples.) For the amateur paleontologist there is no unifying narrative and little evolutionary chronology presented to assist the reader who wants to grasp the basics of early tetrapod development. This book is inappropriate for the readers looking for an overview of reptilian fauna and evolutionary developments, in the late Paleozoic and early Mesozoic periods. An advanced degree in paleozoology should be a prerequisite for buyers.

                    Book Description

There are many excellent books about the AK. What makes Legends and Reality of the AK-47 different from all the other AK books? It is co-written by a very close associate of designer Mikhail Kalshnikov at the Izhmash Arms Factory and one of America's most respected military small-arms experts. Because of Valery Shilin's close ties to both the designer and the factory, the authors were able to gain access to information, photos and weapons never before seen in public, including the AKB and AKB-1 assault rifles, the mysterious A-62 and the very latest prototypes of the AK's replacement, the AN-94. They fill in the gaps in the knowledge about the history and development of not only the Kalashnikov family of weapons but of other Russian small arms as well. Most important, as a friend and colleague, Shilin adds a personal perspective on the man behind the design of some of the most legendary weapons of the 20th century.

                    2 out of 5 stars Panegyric for M. T. Kalashnikov.......2006-06-18

Note to readers: Both of the reviews below were obviously planted by the publisher or some other party with an interest in selling this book. The content is identical and they were probably written by the same person (or computer). I'm an impartial reviewer. I'm familiar with Charlie Cutshaw's work and bought this book largely because his name was on the cover. None of his style is evident. He probably did nothing more than edit Val Shilin's punctuation and grammar. The writing style is identical to that found on Shilin's website -- slightly archaic, stilted, but grammatically-correct English. Although Shilin is described as a "close associate" of Kalashnikov, I think his job title is more likely PR flack for Izhmash Arms. If you've seen Shilin on TV, you know he speaks English fluently, makes an excellent presentation, and tries hard to come off like a regular American kind of guy. The content of this book is pretty thin, with lots of unnecessary and redundant references to the brilliance of M. T. Kalashnikov. My softcover edition runs only 186 pages with large type and many photos. My interests run to the history, development, design, and nomenclature of Kalashnikov firearms that can be legally owned in the U.S. Much of this book is devoted to arms unavailable to civilians, e.g., submachineguns, general purpose machineguns, grenade launchers, and so forth. It's interesting, but not very useful. There is no "inside" information here besides what Izhmash wants you to believe about their firearms. If you are an AK owner interested in technical information or the history of your rifle, you can do much better than this book.

                    5 out of 5 stars Perfect!.......2003-03-15

This BIG book is THE most definitive work of EVERY style of AK ever created. Nothing is left out. Val Shilin was a close associate of Mikhail Kalashnikov at the Izhmash Arms Factory, And Charlie Cuttshaw is a noted small arms expert. Together they have brought this fantastic weapon to life in the pages of this excellent book.

The sheer number of AK variants and spin off's will amaze you! "Secret guns", "special project Guns", the evolution of different styles, it's all in here in pictures and easy to understand text. This book has blueprints, specs and even a look at the weapons that will soon supersede the AK on the battlefield.

I you want to know everything about the evolution and the legend that is the AK-47, THIS book is where it's at!

I am so pleased with the gorgeous fine art in this whole series of small books (I bought all 3). This one has particularly fine art reproductions. Buyers, just be aware this book series are all rather small books but very well bound. I was a little surprised when I received the first one because I had not noted the book dimensions. But I was so pleased that I went ahead and bought the other 2.

The Art Of The Pen is a lavishly beautiful, full-color reproduction of classical works of calligraphy and miniature painting drawn from the era of the Holy Roman Emperor Rudolf II. These selected pages from the "Mira calligraphiae monumenta" or Model Book of Calligraphy, one of the major manuscripts in the J. Paul Getty Museum collection, The Art Of The Pen is enthusiastically recommended to calligraphy enthusiasts as a rapturously enticing work of exquisite artwork that transcends the test of time.
