                4 out of 5 stars Good high-level picture.......2000-05-23

                This book describes the benefits of "re-engineering" through time-based analyses and work flow improvement. At this level, the book is a total success. The author's pithy style makes for good reading. Where the book is weak is in the details. I would have been happier to see the case studies presented in greater detail. Adding some diagrams to the case studies would have reinforced the concepts presented.

                There is no question that Koulopoulos is headed in the right direction. Even with the high-level assessment, the book discusses some of the most important concepts of our time.

                          3 out of 5 stars HOPE IT'S BETTER THAN THE LAST ONE.......2004-12-13

                          I keep buying all the Texas Monthly field guide books to snakes, fossils, insects, trees, etc., but the spider guide has been the most disappointing. I am accidentally encountering spiders on a weekly basis that aren't in the guide. Maybe it's because I live on the coast and Home Land Security isn't checking the banana boats closely enough.

                          4 out of 5 stars good, but incomplete.......2004-03-04

                          The only problem i have with this book is that, as a Texan living in Texas, i keep encountering spiders not identified or even remotely mentioned in this book. To top it off, neither can the county agent.

                          3 out of 5 stars Somewhat good pictures and descriptions but not very helpful.......2003-11-15

                          This book is less suited as a field guide and more of a biology lesson on overall spider taxonomy. In my opinion a FIELD GUIDE should provide pictures of spiders that you would commonly run into in the FIELD, but this book does not fulfill that expectation. There have been only about one or two spiders i've came across that I have been able to identify by using this field guide out of literally thousands (I spend a lot of time in wooded areas). With the extremely low amount of photos in this guide, any other spiders I am absolutely not able to identify by using this guide. Out of all the Texas Field Guides this is clearly the poorest written one since it probably only has pictures of about 1% of the spiders in the state of Texas. I had originally bought this in order to see which spiders carry the most potent venom other than the obvious black widow & brown recluse, but that is not in here either...just biology. If you are looking for something to help identify spiders in the state of Texas this is about the only choice at the moment, although an average one at best.

                          4 out of 5 stars Finally! A real regional Field Guide for Arachnids!.......2000-11-14

                          Dr. Jackman is a well-known entomologist/naturalist at Texas A&M University. This handbook is a well-researched guide to its subject and he enlisted the help of leading authorities (including W. David Sissom for the scorpion section) for information in areas in which he is not familiar. The book lacks in several areas, such as in the Orders Mygalomorphae, Pseudoscorpiones and Solifugae, but this is due in part to a general lack of literature and knowledge in that field for Texas. The full-color photographs, mostly by the author, are excellent, yet small. A great addition to the Texas Monthly Field Guide Series!

                          Mr. Branden spends a large section of the book going over identifying the mental issues in playing tennis. This is done well however, actually finding solutions is not done clearly at all.
                          The best part of the book were the simple tips such as putting more height on the ball over the net, getting one more ball back and improving just one shot in your repertoire.
                          This isn't a bad book but there are better books out there that have worked out much better for me. I would recommend Total Tennis by Peter Burwash and Bill Tilden's How to play better Tennis. The subject matter is different and I feel they have more value.

                          Yes, exactly that. Braden produces an easy-to-read book that dips into a bit of almost everything tennis except strokes. So he covers physics, genetics, statistics, psychology, great tennis personalities, finding a coach, tennis parents....ummm, yes, you got it. It's not so much about the mental side of tennis as a collection of tennis television commercials that every now and then touch upon the mental side of the game. So it goes alongside my people magazine (Vic is a marvelous rambler!) into the bathroom. And even when it covers the mental side, it is not very practical. There are other books that cover the mental game much better (e.g., Inner Game of Tennis, Zennis, Smart Tennis, etc). Still it is well-written and enjoyable and more decorative than potpourri by the bath.

                          3 out of 5 stars Perhaps a little eccentric.......2003-09-16

                          When it comes to refining your mental approach to the game, you've got to hand it to Vic Braden! I've always had the physical talent, but never the mental capacity to outthink my opponent, even if it was only a girl. Vic taught me to write down useful acronyms of my strategies and reactions to my opponent's strategies and shots as well on an extended wrist band that I make reference to between points - and sometimes during points(not recommended for beginners or women). For example, GAN is oftentimes effective when my net-happy opponent arrogantly holds his racquet above chest level(go after nuts). For a female opponent, Vic calls it GAP. This helps to teach a lesson of humility, says Vic.

                          Perhaps the only point of contention I have with Vic Braden is his affinity for the Aussie formation in doubles while putting down your racquet and using both hands via sign language to communicate cryptic codes while serving. It's just too bizzarre. One other bone of contention with Vic is his advocating to 'release your juices' before the match, and hence any bent-up sexual frustration, in order to 'fully become one with the tennis ball.' To each his own.

                          5 out of 5 stars Always losing? It might be in your head.......2003-06-22

                          After being praised by pros and even attending adult tennis camp, I still found myself choking in matches. Although I'm a female who grew up pre-Title IX, I thought I could learn how to compete, but it just wasn't happening. No matter how much I learned about form and strategy, when it came to game time, I'd lose.

                          This book has helped explain what's going on in my head and what I can do to either win or just plain enjoy tennis for fun. It's going to take some time to put Braden's tips to use, but his common-sense approach simple to understand and the data he uses to back it up convinces even the skeptics.

                          Here's one tidbit that makes sense: get back one more ball, and you'll up your game-wining percentage by 33 percent. That's an amazing number and I find myself diving for balls now that I ordinarily consider hopeless. I'm going for that 33 percent!

                          Recommended for all all levels of play.

                          Only caveat: they could update this edition. Some of the players used as examples retired years ago.

                          As an adult new tennis player who is highly analytical, this book opened doors for me into the world of tennis. It explained real reasons coaches and pro's say to do certain things which are in actuality not really what they want at all. Vic explains the fundimentals in a way that you can immediately benefit and learn from. His book has made the game even more enjoyable to play.

                                  It's very simple: if you're going to make a language CD, you should damn well know how to pronounce it correctly. The Chinese speaker on the CD is fine, but the American (Dr. Blair?) makes gross mispronunciations every sentence or two.

                                  I'd rate it lower than one star if I could... if you pattern your speaking after him, the only people that will be able to understand your Mandarin (as my Chinese teacher used to say) is you and your dog. It's not just bad, but it's actively harmful to your efforts to learn the language correctly.

                                  Only audio CD I've ever returned.

                                  1. I had problems installing the CDs.
                                  2. Their help line was very responsible even in the evening by e-mail.
                                  3. The beginning was very good and then just fell apart.
                                  4. It reminds me of one of those hacked together chop-socky movies that Jackie Chan was forced to make - All advertising, some, but very little delivery.

                                  The sample has the narrative about an interesting story where I expected to solve a problem and use your language skills. Out of three hours, I bet less than 10 minutes TOTAL are spent on the story and I haven't seen anything related to the adventure in the learning. The mnemonic devices were good, that is haidou = sea pirates, Shanghai = near the Sea, but I bet less than 20% of the words used mnemonic devices. Two hours into the three hours of the course and they are stringly irrelevant phrases together, e.g. Do you want to pet my tiger? (I'm not kidding) with that... I don't know, [...].

                                  For an absolute beginner who is serious about learning Chinese, I would recommend starting with Pimsleur (the mini-series) to get the pronunciation and sentence rhythms pounded into your head. I've heard so many great reviews about Pimsleur from people who have used it and then traveled to China. Then when you're ready to expand your vocabulary and speaking skills as a quicker (and more fun) pace, "Dr. Blair" fits the bill for beginner stage 2. They don't hesitate to give you goofy mnemonic tips to help you remember the Chinese. i.e. "tou fa" for hair-- "With that crazy hairstyle, you've really gone tou fa!" or "peng you" friend. "Sort of sounds like "stung yo" but it's "peng you." "Dan shi" (of course) "Sounds a bit like "darn sure." A bit crude but very helpful to get the gist of the unusual Chinese sounds.

                                  I am so impressed by this diminutive (in both size and price) package. I bought it for the price and internet reviews of Dr. Blair's courses (they are all filled with praise). I am now a believer because the method works in the most creative of ways. I'm not yet through lesson 2 but am able to innovatively think through the construction and translation of sentences.

                                  This is an introductory package to the Power-glide method of language learning. It includes 3 audio CDs with 6 total lessons and 1 computer CD with the written (in Simplified Chinese characters and pinyin) and spoken vocabulary that you have learned organized by lesson, additional travel vocabulary, and a diglot written story which merges both English language and Chinese pinyin to practice with.

                                  The audio CD portion uses a story-line to start immediate learning as you listen and practice along with 'the other students'. You have to listen many times to each section in order to really absorb what you are learning. For me, each lesson (6 total) takes at least a week to truly 'get it'. So, at $12 we're talking about $2/week for fairly intensive instruction. In combination with the computer CD resources, this package can lay quite a constructive foundation in the Chinese language. What a fantastic and inexpensive way to see if you enjoy learning a new language!

                                  Because of my positive experience with this package, I have looked into buying the comprehensive Power-glide Mandarin Chinese course which Power-glide has yet to complete. It is due by the end of 2006 and it, too, will be a bargain (25%-30% cost of competitor products). I know that this is the language learning method for me.

                                  I've tried lots of other language programs, but Dr. Blair's is the first that held my interest long enough that I didn't mind doing the necessary work.

                                  Chinese pronunciations are quite a challenge to westerners, but this program takes such care to demonstrate them that you'll be surprised how quickly you can make them sound authentic.

                                  On top of the entertaining program--you sort of have to hear it to belive it--a huge plus is the CD-ROM that helps you review pronunciations and characters as well as everything else on the program.

                                  And you can't beat the price!
