Book Description

By losing their ability to control exchange rates and protect their currencies, nation states, assers Ohmae, have forfeited their role as critical participants in the global economy. Ohmae contends that five great forces have usurped the economic power once held by the nation state, resulting in the rise of region states which have closer links to the global economy than to their "host" nations.

3 out of 5 stars Good book, Not so sure about the premise........2007-03-08

Nation states going away anytime soon? I doubt it. While the author makes a good argument, lots of evidence found elsewhere puts doubt in the presented theory. Very good book on globalization issues.

5 out of 5 stars The irrelevance of politicians.......2002-05-24

The concept of nation state as it is today, is relatively new. Kenichi Ohmae's thesis is that it is already out of date.

Nation state has become an excuse for all manner of political ills and goals that are irrelevant to the majority of the public. Kenichi shows that when leaders ignore geopolitical boundaries and encourage cross border cooperations, the result is far more beneficial than the old nationalism.

However as nations become less relevant, organisations such as the European Union are to an extent taking their place. The Author argues that these are no more relevant, they are new nation states rit large. In their place, he argues for greater regional cooperation, transending boundaries, not building exclusive trading blocks, but maximising the potential of a city, region or country, through truly international division of labour.

The title can be misunderstood, by those who do not read the book, but the driving argument, is that in their current guise, nation states risk becoming irrelevant to the very people that they claim to serve. Left leaning social democrats, will disagree with his theory, as will old style conservatives. Those of you who wish to live in a more connected less divisive world, will find the book a breath of fresh air.

1 out of 5 stars pernicious AND badly argued.......2002-04-03

Omae Ken'ichi writes from the perspective of a radical of the global elite. Should the various states of the world use welfare programs or social protections to blunt popular opposition to the exploitation and structural violence inherent in the free market system? Never! Omae demands that all social programs be abolished so that "global solutions will flow [via the market] to where they are needed without the intervention of nation states".

This is prima facie ridiculous, and Omae gets away with it only with remarkably vague explication and by refusing to entertain criticisms. Even libertarian ideologues must admit that only those problems whose solutions can be made profitable would thus be solved -- and since most of the world is poor, no solutions will be forthcoming (consider AIDS in Africa).

But the problems with this book extend well beyond the notion that the market will solve the world's problems if given a chance. The list is long (including no consideration of the environment, cultural diversity, or poor countries), but most disturbing is Omae's condemnation of democracy. He believes sovereign governments are the corrupt instruments of special interests -- true enough, but a humane solution is not based on giving free rein to the corporate puppetmasters. Morever, Omae explicitly opposes the principle of one person, one vote: "The tyranny of modern democracy is that it tends to give equal weight
to votes before contributions to the maintenance of society as a whole are taken into account".

Omae's solution, then, is to concentrate economic power even more than is currently the case in the hands of those rewarded by the market (generally the most ruthless, greedy, or lucky) while cutting the vast majority out of the process altogether. In other words, establish a formal oligarchy, instead of our current informal oligarchy hidden behind sham elections. These conclusions are pernicious, and Omae's arguments so weakly supported that this book is not even useful for understanding the thinking of those who favor greater corporate control of the globe.

4 out of 5 stars You must read beyond the title.......2001-06-27

The title suggests that nation states and government in general are things of the past, a world-scale right-wing libertarian vision come to life. That's not quite true. Now 5 years after this book was written, in so many ways, the world either already is what Ohmae said it will be, or it is well on its way. The "End" is not so much a dissolution of national governments, but their growing irrelevance. Fewer and fewer consumers still regard Honda and Toyota as Japanese car manufacturers because so much of their assembly and even machining is now performed in the USA. If Motorola sells portable phones to Japan it does not necessarily benefit Americans, because the phones might be manufactured in Indonesia. The shareholders and other departments of the company might benefit because of new business generated, but it is possible that all employees and shareholders come from Asia or Europe themselves, even if Motorola was originally established in the US.

The nation state might last through the end of this lifetime (though unlikely longer than that), but it is less and less an economic entity, rather a final vestige of nationalistic sentiments, the modern and future "opium of the masses." Ohmae reminds us that terms like GDP and GNP are outdated and deserve reconsideration, considering that every large nation state has successful enterprises spaced out among uncompetitive industries and unproductive locales. Gross "Regional" Product might be a more accurate yardstick.

A good companion book to this one might be "Jihad vs. McWorld" by Benjamin Barber. That book emphasises that the so-called Transnational Corporations might as well be called anti-national corporations. Consumers scarcely know or care where the banks and manufacturers who provide them with goods and services call home, and the corporations care even less about the nationality of their customers, beyond the point that it might provide information about their purchasing habits.

5 out of 5 stars I guess they read another book.......2001-05-07

The End of the Nation State was profound when it was written. It's simple argument was that the power of government would diminish as the ability of people to communicate across lines increased. A simple idea that has been proven time and time again since the book was written. Does he suggest that governments will disappear - not really. What he does suggest is much more subtle - he talks about linkages - for example Tiajuana and San Diego - where the links between the two is more important to the area than either the link of Mexico City to Tiajuana or San Diego to Washington - trade and communications become linked more closely than regulation. Another example - Japanese who could not buy blue jeans at a reasonable price in country discovered ways using federal express to get jeans outside the tariff. All of those are great examples of the benefits and expansions of trade. His conclusion - reinforced in later works and also in a number of other books on the subject (if not in practice and observation) - is that the ultimate beneficiaries of globalized trade are individuals. See for example Future Perfect. For a slightly different view see John Seeley Brown's recent book on the social nature of information - Brown argues that nation states will continue - which is not a direct response to Ohmae but still an interesting perspective.

I'm the project manager for e-business initiatives in a company with approximately 10.000 employees. We have been using the approach described in the book to refocus our sales and marketing activities with an online portal for our business customers. It was very helpful to understand the "lessons learned" and to use the methodology with its "worksheets" for aligning the various stakeholders for the project and to keep the projects on track. We have even included several aspects of the methodology presented in "survival @ e-speed" in our internal project guidelines - in particular those areas where a quicker development time and "scoping to time & budget" are addressed.

Spectrophotometry and Spectrofluorimetry: A Practical Approach Second Edition was written with the intention to help the reader understand the background concepts and practical applications of spectrophotometry and spectrofluorimetry. Optical spectroscopy underpins the day to day operations of most laboratories in the chemical, biological and medical sciences and this edition contains substantially updated and new chapters addressing the principles of most of the more common applications such as: spectrophotometry, spectrophotometric assays, spectrofluorimetry, time resolved fluorescence and phosphorescence studies, circular dichrosim and pre-equilibrium spectroscopic techniques. In all chapters, the emphasis is placed upon the practical aspects, with protocols to guide readers through test experiments. Other chapters are included to introduce subjects that have traditionally depended upon spectroscopy such as basic enzyme kinetics, ligand binding, data handling and the more recently established interest in the study of protein and DNA stability. Finally, the concept of 'global analysis' is introduced to provide the reader with an insight into this method of utilizing the vast arrays of experimental data provided by current instrumentation.

Before you buy this Robert B. Parker Companion, my advice is to go into your local bookstore and find a copy on the shelf. Skim through the book and see if it's worth paying full price for.

This rather slim volume simply isn't worth the money, in my opinion. The biography/interview with Parker is brief (you can read the whole thing in less than a few minutes) and far inferior to what you can find on the internet for free. The outlines of the books and characters are pretty skimpy and uninteresting. If you're a hard-core fan, this book may be worth purchasing, but I think for the rest of us, it's just not a good investment. Again, there are fan websites that provide a lot of this information at no cost.

I'm a big fan of Robert B. Parker, but I was disappointed by this book, which looked like a rush job. Parker deserves a better book that surveys his body of work.

              5 out of 5 stars For R.B. Parker fans.......2006-02-23

This is an excellent resource for avid fans of Parker. It outlines his books, gives information about his personal life, and is very readable. I recommend it.

1 out of 5 stars Totally disappointing-I want my money back on this one.......2005-12-22

I love Robert B. Parker's books, and was looking forward to this "complete guide"--the contents sounded great. What a disappointment it turned out to be! The "comprehensive biography" of Parker is only 2 pages long. That's not my idea of comprehensive. The "exclusive and insightful" interview is only 5 pages long--and not very insightful. The "cast of characters" is just a 116 page list of names. Here are 2 examples "Walker, Judy.(Potshot) Ex-wife of Dean Walker"; and "Fenton.(Perchance to Dream) A Coast Guard Lieutenant Commander." I didn't find it interesting or useful. The whole book is only 206 pages. In my opinion, the 116 pages wasted on the list would have been better used for detailed information on the main characters (Spenser, Hawk, Sunny, Jesse, etc). Another 31 pages are taken up with an alphabetcal list of places where things have occurred. For example,"Bow Lake, The Site of Evan Malone's cabin in Back Story." The plot summaries are not as informative as those you can get for free here on Amazon. The 2 page summary of "Spenser on film" was very superficial. Where are the titles, air dates, cast lists, etc??? Not here. I did like the 5 pages of quotes--but that's about it.

Funny, urgent, bizarre, and honest pop artist David Shrigley's darkly hilarious scrawls from the subconscious have earned him a growing legion of fans around the world. In this mock autobiographical collection his mischievous drawings capture life's anxieties and ambitions from the mundane to the surreal. Here, at last, is The Truth about beer, doctors, shadow puppets, lunch, dolphins, boredom, and supernatural forces. Seductively strange and addictively amusing, this edgy little book welcomes the uninitiated and rewards the faithful.

5 out of 5 stars Art And Revolution.......2002-07-20

This book is about the intersection between art and revolutionary politics. In the 1930s the leading figures of the surrealist movement and a few other artists and writers tried to cut out some political space for artists who supported a revolutionary overturn of the system that birthed fascism and world war - capitalism .The same "globalized" capitalism that exists today, and which is marching toward fascism and world war all over again. In the 1930s, there was another challenge for would-be revolutionary artists : the obstacle of the mass
"Communist" parties which betrayed them and workers and farmers around the world in the interests of the "Soviet" bureaucrats headed by Stalin, which same bureaucracy stifled and suffocated all art and creativity inside the USSR.The struggle of those artists, led by Andre Breton and Diego Rivera, and their direct collaboration with the Russian revolutionary leader in exile Leon Trotsky, has rich lessons for those artists of all kinds who are already beginning to reject and revolt against the "globalized" capitalism of today. As well as those who will do so tommorow.

This book will give you a good understanding of the surrealist movement. You will read the artists' writings not only on this subject, but also their views on the important political questions of the day which they understood were tied to cultural questions. A photo display in the book gives you a sampling of surrealist works. There is also an excellent glossary of names that reveals the evolution of the surrealists in later years. You gain an appreciation for the international breadth of the movement. 'What is Surrealism?' is not just for art history students. Anyone wishing to gain a deeper understanding of the relationship between art and politics will be fascinated by collection of articles in this book.

5 out of 5 stars Can't say enough how interesting, easy-to-read this is.......2002-07-18

Well, what a shock. A totally human, big, fat tome on an art form that I've never enjoyed. Makes understandable and useful for one's own life the surrealists' aim of dissolving the alienating barriers between thought and action, dream and consciousness, art and life. Their appreciation of Freud; their collaboration with communists, with Leon Trotsky; their rejection of fatherland, religion, family - all flowing from their determination to be part of the birth of a new world in which there would be no poets because all would make poetry. Fascinating section of documents including a brief homage to Hopi art, denunciation of Salvador Dali for being pro-fascist, support to the Algerian independence fight. Still don't enjoy the surrealists' work. But do enjoy them now.

5 out of 5 stars When some artists werent on the short leash they are on now.......2002-07-15

Today most artists seem to be on a short leash. I have friends who paint and sculpt and they don't even think about the fact that their art rarely reaches even middle class people let alone the working and farming majority. When something stirs them and they want to take action, they get afraid about their grants, their patrons, that artist in resident spot at a university, or that artist on a cruise, or on a rich person's art club trip to France or Egypt. They get scared to make a phone call or even write a letter because art in the US in particular is on strings to the rich.......................................................

Once it was different. Read this. I don't say follow surrealism, because it was just one school, born of another time, trying to surmount problems that only a socialist revolution and retransformation of society can solve. As a revolutionist as well as an artist--I have a MFA in Creative Writing and write fictional and poetry--what is remarkable about Breton is not his narrow precepts or methods, but about the militancy to which he tried to find truth and resonance and joy without surrendering to acceptance of bourgeois society..................................
The remarkable writings of Andre Breton, as gifted as a writer, as he was a painter, and more gifted as a thinker than he was either. After World War II US imperialism went to work to try to stifle the courage and outrageousness of people like Breton to channel art into the lack of statement of abstract expressionism. Surrealism is no more revolutionary than any other form of art. The most famous surrealist to most people today is Dali, who didn't mind Franco at all and tried to turn himself into an NY advertizing money maker. What is important about Breton, besides what he says about surrealism and art--and on those things I am no big judge--he was trying to find a way to fight for a free, fighting, critical, irreverant art, faced with the nauseating conservatism of formalism and the smothering idiocy of socialist realism? What was important about Breton is that in these writings and in the manifestos here signed by non surrealists like Leon Trotsky and Diego Rivera, Breton was fighting for more than his art? The quest to upturn (boulverser is better but not English) speak out of turn, penetrate, and speak openly that he developed in his art, in the 1930s and 1940s when most of this work was done, was connected with the struggle of artists to link up with the revolutionary struggle against imperialism, and at the same time, with the fight within the workers movement to free it self of the syphilis of Stalinism.
